Club Bulletin 1 and 15 October 2019

Meeting Numbers 1532 and 1533

Future Meetings On Tuesday 1 October, we will greet DG Tim Klar and Bronwyn on their official visit to our club for 2019-2020. Members will recall that Tim had to reschedule his visit from 6 August because of sickness. Tim joined the Rotary Club of Adelaide East in 1990 and served as President in 1999-2000. He served in a number of District 9500 positions including chair of International Service committee and Assistant Governor. Tim is now a member of the RC of Coromandel Valley in District 9520 and served as Assistant Governor for Group 6 in 2016-2018. Having been involved with both District 9500 and District 9520 during his Rotary career, Tim is well experienced to help make the amalgamation of both Districts into a single District 9510 as smooth as possible by the end of his term. We all look forward to meeting Tim and Bronwyn and to hearing of future developments for District and Rotary International in general.

Future Meetings On Tuesday 15 October, we will have Pam Hewitt representing the Glenelg Community Centre as Guest Speaker. The Community Centre, strategically situated on Colley Terrace Glenelg was established through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Glenelg in the 1960’s and is maintained by the City of Holdfast Bay for the use of citizen’s groups, particularly the elderly. The main occupant of the premises is the Glenelg Community Club .

Past Meetings Our meeting on 3 September was effectively a Club Assembly where a number of future club activities were discussed. The St Peters Woodlands Fathers Day Breakfast was a good outcome for the club as was the previous Bunnings BBQ and the Variety Bash departure breakfast. We welcomed back PP Rob and Marianne plus PP Malcolm and Lyn from their winter travels. Wayne distributed tickets for our Christmas raffle. Bear in mind that we, as members, need to sell enough tickets to cover the cost of running the raffle and proceeds from all other sales go directly yo the selling organisations. PP Peter Thompson is to be offered Honorary membership of the club in acknowledgement of the many years of managing our meeting program.

Club Bulletin 1 and 15 October 2019 Past Meetings (Continued) At our meeting on Tuesday 17 September, we had as Guest Speaker PP David Binks from the Rotary Club of Glenelg. David has been a member of the RC Glenelg for 55 years and has been involved with Rotary Youth programs at Club and District level for many of those years. One of the mainstays of Rotary is its youth programs concerned with youth development. Student exchange has been successfully functioning for many years. A basic requirement for anyone working with young people is that they must meet the legislative requirements needed for youth protection. Each club has to appoint a youth protection officer (Lyn Banner), who needs to ensure that members concerned receive a National Police clearance.

Club Social Events Members would have received an email from PP Rosalien on Tuesday 24 September listing planned social events for the next couple of months. Members may not be aware that President Kevin Tumes is recovering from a serious eye problem; a detached retina. He experienced problems with his vision after the BBQ at the City to Bay run and has had surgery to rectify the damage. According to Kevin, it will be at least a month before his eye is back to normal and we all wish him well in the meantime. 2

Antibiotics or Not I was interested to read an article in the September edition of Rotary Down Under discussing the growing problem of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) which occurs when micro-organisms in our system evolve to become resistant to antibiotics. Most of the antibiotics we have in our systems come from the food we eat but also the increasing use of prescribed antibiotics for the wrong reasons, primarily viral infections, is cause for concern. Australia is the 11th highest user of antibiotics in OECD countries.

Antibiotics have only been with us since the 1940’s and since that time, millions of human and animal lives have been saved through their use. However, within two years of penicillin being produced, reports of bacterial resistance to the drug beClub Secretary Peter Hammond has notified all gan to occur. This pattern has continued as each new members of a school holiday activity being organised antibiotic was put into use. by the City of Holdfast Bay. Today we are seeing bacteria (Superbugs) which It’s called “Meet the Machines” and will be in Wigley show multiple resistance to almost all antibiotics on Reserve on Thursday 10 October from 10.00am to the market. 4.00pm. This is a major threat to human and animal health. We have been asked to run our BBQ as a fundraiser By 2050 we may be living in an era where we have for our club during that time and members are asked no antibiotics available to treat simple infections. to contact PP Bill on 0418 807 222 or Wayne Leaves on 0408 455 730 to help with the BBQ. The Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts (WA) has commenced a “Wash Your Hands” project in an effort to reduce the transfer of bacterial infections and so reduce the need for the use of antibiotics.
