Future Meetings

Meeting 18 July

At our meeting on Tuesday 18 August we will have Stephany Martin from RC Campbelltown as Guest Speaker. Stephany is District Chair of the well recognised youth programs, RYLA, RYPEN, RYWELL, Rotaract, Interact and Earlyact. We have supported some participants in RYLA and RYPEN earlier this year so it will be useful to hear from Stephany as to what is planned for 20172018 in those programs under her watch. Stephany has a long way to travel to speak to us and it would be good PR for our club if we had maximum possible attendance on Tuesday.

At our meeting on 18 July, we had as guest, Dini White, Assistant Governor of Group 8 who was welcomed to the meeting by President elect Bill. Our speaker was Barry Heffernan, coordinator of the William Kibby VC Men’s Shed, Kibby Avenue Glenelg North. We have worked in collaboration with Barry and his group over the past year or two and donated our original BBQ trailer to the Men’s Shed group to assist with their fundraising. Barry reported that work on repairing and upgrading the trailer is progressing well. Barry informed us that a number of East Timor veterans have recently joined the group and these are beOn Tuesday 15 August, we will hear from Robert coming more involved with the shed activities. District Governor’s Visit

District Governor Bob Cooper will make his official visit to our club for our breakfast meeting at 7.00am on Tuesday 26 September . This is the fourth Tuesday in September and so is out of sequence from our first and third Tuesday calendar. The club board will decide whether this is an additional meeting or if it replaces the previous Tuesday. Watch this space!

Club Bulletin 1 August 2017 Social Gatherings PP Rosalien organised a successful social gathering for members who wished to be involved on Friday 14 July at the Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club. Members present at our last meeting agreed that similar functions on the second Friday of each month would be good for members and friends to keep in touch with each other during an “off week”. The next Friday will be 11 August. Rosalien will send out a reminder.

Fundraising Barbecues With the help of families and friends, PP Brenton has been able to fill the roster for our next Bunnings Barbecue to be held on Friday 4 August. Please bear in mind that the main source of funds for our many service activities comes from these and other public barbecues that we operate. Fridays at Bunnings is lucrative, and as also President elect Bill reminded us, we did get $800 recently from a promotional BBQ at Radio Rentals.

Bottles and Cans Just a further reminder to members that a significant amount of money was raised last year for club funds from bottle and can collection through the efforts of Secretary Barb. Other members have volunteered to help with the collection, storage and transport to a redemption depot and this should increase the amount raised this year. If you can help with collection, please bring along to Rotary on a Tuesday morning. Collection bags are available

Ninko Women’s Shelter President elect Bill mentioned this project as a possible community service activity again this year. Work on the shelter was a positive “hands on” project last Rotary year, and a number of needs for the shelter remain. Members were receptive to assist again.

Annual Subsriptions Members are reminded that their annual subscription of $200 became due on 1 July 2017. This can be paid as $200 now or $100 now plus a further $100 in January 2018. Either way, please pay Treasurer Brenton direct by cash or cheque or use EFT to our Club Service Account, at BSB 085333, A/c 205083444. If using EFT, make sure you identify yourself as the payer and also email Brenton when you have transferred the money.

Club Bulletin 1 August 2017 Soap Aid Collection Program

It was very pleasing that new member Wayne Leaves volunteered to collect the first batch of used soap to initiate our involvement with “Soap Aid”. Wayne gave us an excellent summary of what was involved in collecting soap from the Crowne Plaza on Hindmarsh Square in the city, transporting in his SUV to Foodbank on Cross Road and unloading there for temporary storage. Gaynor, executive housekeeper at Crowne Plaza contacted secretary Barb to advise that 6X12kg boxes of soap was ready to collect and the whole process then went very smoothly for Wayne. I don’t know which other hotels are involved with us on the Soap Aid program but if we have 72kg from one hotel in a very short time, let’s hope that the others can save similar amounts for us. We would like more to come on board so we can send relatively large quantities away for processing.

The Voice of Rotary Broadcast on 1197AM 5RPH Adelaide each Tuesday 7.30-8.00 pm. From each Wednesday the broadcast program can be heard on-line at www.rphadelaide.org.au/Webcast.html To download a program, right click on the “Voice of Rotary” and “save link as”. The program stays on the RPH website for a week. We also keep a file of past programs. Should you want one from further back, contact Jock Thornton on johnjan4@gmail.com

Voice of Rotary Coordinator: Jock Thornton (RC Burnside) johnjan4@gmail.com As the program is now more easily accessible, Jock is keen to hear from Rotarians who are visiting Adelaide from out of town. NO INFORMATION IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON THE AUGUST PROGRAM

Taxi Council Barbecues Members will recall that we have run some very successful barbecues for taxi drivers at the airport taxi layoff area over recent years. They have been hard work for our members and friends but quite lucrative for club funds. President elect Bill reminded us of this last Tuesday and Kevin Tumes volunteered to contact the Taxi Council to remind them of our previous involvement and to make sure that we don’t miss out on the next ones.
