President’s Paragraphs Thank you to those members and partners who were able to attend the Group 8 combined meeting last week. It was a good fellowship opportunity and we also heard a good guest speaker. It is always worthwhile visiting other clubs to witness how they may do things and if we might be able to learn some new ideas to strengthen our own club.

Coming Meetings 27 October and 3 November 27 October We will have as guest Speaker, Cindee Richardson from Catherine House Inc. speaking to us this week. Catherine house was established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1988 to provide emergency accommodation and support for adult women unaccompanied by children. There are 16 sites in the inner city of Adelaide.

It must surely rate as one of our most significant achievements Wednesday night’s board meeting again contained significant discussion on membership and I urge all members to think about someone that you think would make a good Rotarian and ask them to come along and witness a meeting and what we do. Previous Meetings Our scheduled meeting of 13 October was cancelled and instead there was a Group 8 meeting on Wednesday 14 October hosted by the Rotary Club of Glenelg. As it happened, other Group 8 clubs were not represented but 13 Somerton Park members and partners attended. Guest speaker at that meeting was Robert Gordon Menzies who was named after the former Prime Minister and founder of the Liberal Party of Australia. Robert is a novelist and he spoke on the background behind some of his novels. “Culture Shock” is a story of a young girl from his home town who received little respect, love or attention from her parents and after becoming pregnant, having the baby which was adopted out by her parents, she eventually made a good life for herself in London. “Webs of Deception” was inspired by his time at Knox Grammar School in Melbourne and details the downward decline of a school principal. Other books of his such as “Moroccan Gold” and “Killing is Catching but Sex Doesn’t Rot Your Teeth” were discussed. Robert’s anecdotes of his life were amusing, some of which showed what could be called “novelist’s licence” but still good stories. Robert had a supply of his novels available at the meeting and he announced that he would donate $5 from any books sold on the night to Australian Rotary Health. This was to go with the takings from the raffle and the hats donations at the meeting. Our meeting on 20 October was back at the Motel and we were pleased to welcome back some of our overseas travellers. Good to see Malcolm, Lyn, Linda and Pam after their absence. Our guest speaker was Lawrence Kongwa, introduced by Rajni. Lawrence is a physical trainer in Glenelg and spoke on the need for physical exercise to maintain wellbeing ,

prevent injury and to increase strength. “Exercise is done against one’s wishes but continued because the alternative is worse”.  Muscles contract and relax.  Muscles work on the joints they cross.  Muscles work best in the direction of their fibres.  Muscles become weak mainly from sitting and other general inactivity. Exercises, such as walking, and stretching are often needed to reactivate muscles which have become weak. Diet– most things in moderation. 2

Club News Fellowship Function Although Bronwyn will be away cruising over the next couple of months, she has organised a fellowship “Drinks and Meal” night for Friday 6 November commencing at 5.30pm or whenever you can get there at the Adelaide Sailing Club. The Sailing Club is at the Barcoo outlet, on the beach in front of the Sea Rescue Squadron. The same place that Linda had her changeover dinner. Bronwyn has tested it out on our behalf and says that the menu is good, (Schnitzels, Pizzas, Fisherman’s Basket and great sweets) A table for 12 has been booked, sounds like a great location and close too.

Wine Labelling Don’t forget to get your wine orders in to Linda ASAP because our annual labelling expedition to Langmiel Winery at Tanunda is on Saturday 31 October. The wine is bottled commercially through Langmiel and we attach our labels and box the finished product. A BBQ BYO lunch will follow in the very pleasant picnic grounds of Langmiel.
