In simple Mike terms, the more members we have, the easier it is to spread the load. The collapse of the RC of Brighton illustrates the likely outcome with too few members.

President’s Paragraphs

Our Membership committee has indicated a need for our club to strive for a membership of 40 and we are keen to increase our membership by 5 this year. While it is a bold target, it can be achieved if we work together and identify people we think will meet the Rotary ethos. Then, the most difficult task is to ask those people to come to a meeting or function to have a look at what we do. We should be very proud of what we do and what our club has achieved and our contribution to the many Rotary projects. It should not be hard to tell people about Rotary’s contribution to ending Polio or our involvement with Minda over 20+ years. It is not hard to appreciate that people enjoy being associated with successful organizations and would feel flattered to be asked to consider joining a Rotary club. Unless we all take steps to ask someone then we will never know just how hard or easy it can be. At the same time, it is important for us to look after the members we have and Brenley has circulated a survey which gives us all an opportunity to express our thoughts and ides on what a Rotary Club needs to do to fulfil its members. If you have not completed the survey, it’s not too late and Brenley will coordinate all responses.

Coming Meetings 4 and 11 August

4 August At our meeting on 4 August, it is expected that some directors will outline their plans for the early part of this Rotary year following the first Board meeting held last Wednesday. In place of a Guest Speaker, we will see a “TED” video presentation which should be of interest to all members of the club.

11 August On 11 August, we will have as Guest Speaker, John Mitchell who for many years was responsible for building and maintaining highways and roads in rural South Australia Peter Thompson has managed to “snare” John and will be chairman for the morning.

Previous Meetings Our meeting on 21 July saw Lyn Banner reinducted into our club and into the world of Rotary. Welcome again Lyn and we look forward to many years of fun and fellowship with you. That meeting also saw the first committee meetings of this Rotary year and all committees seemed to be busy planning their efforts for the coming year. Negotiations are progressing towards us taking over the lease of the storage shed previously held by the RC of Brighton. The shed is owned by the City of Holdfast Bay and is located within the grounds of the Brighton Oval. An inspection of the shed showed that it is very suitable for our needs. District 9520 will also store their equipment in the shed. Over $600 was cleared at the Bunnings BBQ held on 10 July. The next one is on Friday 14 August so please contact Jim Parkins if you can help. Tickets for our annual Christmas cruise raffle are being distributed. This is our major single fundraiser for the year so please help. Our new members, Rob and Marianne Harding are caravanning up north and sent a message from Broome WA. On 28 July, PDG Peter Ochota introduced our Guest Speaker, Peter Heysen. Peter was a GP in Glenelg for many years and is the grandson of the late Sir Hans Heysen who was a renowned Australian artist. Peter spoke of his family’s German background and of their Austra-

heritage. The family home of Sir Hans still exists on Heysen Road, Hahndorf and is known as “The Cedars”. It was established in 1912 on 60 hectares of land and is still principally owned by members of the Heysen family. The home is open to visitors on most days of the week and contains some art works of the late Sir Hans Heysen. Upkeep of the home and grounds is expensive and the family trust is exploring means of funding in order to keep this property going.

Rotary Alumni The Family of Rotary Many Clubs have sponsored or hosted young people to some of Rotary’s excellent programs such as RYPEN, RYLA, Youth Exchange and Rotaract. These are usually very positive experiences and these young people are part of the family of Rotary—our alumni. Young people who have had a positive Rotary experience are more likely to contribute to Rotary in the future. They are already more familiar with Rotary than the average prospective Club member, and their participation in Rotary’s programs indicates that they are interested in our organization’s objectives. Although our alumni are obviously good candidates for future Rotary membership, they often are not interested in Rotary membership in the short term. Our alumni are a long term investment and need to be nurtured through an ongoing communication network which seeks to keep all our alumni connected to Rotary. Our District currently has no organized procedure to keep in touch with these people and the District Alumni Committee hopes to correct this situation. Club Youth Service Directors are asked to provide contact details of young people sponsored by clubs to Peter Hammond, District 9520 Alumni Chair at peter_h@bigpond.com 3
