So dankbaar!

Police respond to Marapong violence LEPHALALE – Following the use of rubber bullets by police to disperse an angry crowd in Marapong, the Limpopo police issued a stern warning urging community members not to take part in illegal marches. According to the Limpopo police they were forced to use rubber bullets after the protestors refused to disperse and demanded to march to the Lephalale municipality on 30 November. Eight people were arrested and a number of protestors were injured during an altercation between the police and members

of the Marapong Unemployment Forum when the protestors refused to disperse after they were informed that they would not be able to proceed with their unprotected march. “Every person in South Africa has the right to protest, but there is a legal process that should be followed before permission is granted for a march. The rights of people to protest against the government or any other organisation should never interfere with non-protesting people’s rights to move about freely or go to their place of employment if

they wish to,” said Colonel Moatse Ngoepe, spokesperson for the Provincial police. Ngoepe defended the use of rubber bullets stating that the area in which the protestors were gathered necessitated immediate action. “The crowd gathered in front of the Spar complex in Marapong where numerous businesses are operating and we had to ensure the safety of the property and businesses in that area.” ... to page 2

Police respond to Marapong violence ... from page 1 Ngoepe did not mince words when he refuted the claims that the Lephalale Station Commander, Lt Colonel Daniel Ramakgoakgoa, was protecting Lephalale Mayor Jack Maeko. “As the police we have to protect everybody in the community and this includes the mayor. The allegations that the Station Commander has shares in the municipality is absolutely untrue and people who make these claims should remember that Ramakgoakgoa is not acting in his personal capacity but as part of the police as a whole.” Meanwhile, the human rights group Right 2 Know has spoken out about the police action. “We condemn the repression of protest actions and community organisations who are struggling to ensure greater democratic control, transparency and accountability over development projects, which are meant to benefit the poor.” Irene Mosima (37), Baleseng Seleme (32), Matome Seanehgo (23), Thabo

Oud-onderwyser se plek is leeg James Steele (10 Augustus 1951 – 30 November 2016)

“Maar hierdie keer, my liewe Oom James, wen jy. Loshande!

ANC regional leader found not-guilty

MOKOPANE - A crowd gathered outside the Mokopane regional court on Monday to show support for ANC Waterberg Regional Secretary, Tolly Mashamaite (40), who was found not-guilty on charges of rape and bribery on Monday. Mashamaite stood accused of raping and bribing a 33-year old woman at the Park Hotel in April this year. The alleged victim was disguised as she approached the witness stand. Magistrate Gerhard Pretorius ordered everyone to wait outside the courtroom while she testified due to her request to protect her identity.

Local organisations win Non-violence campaign kicks off Medupi transport contract LEPHALALE – Medupi Power station hosted a signing ceremony between a local business, Lowveld Bus Services, and a local Taxi Association, Boraro Mmogo Investment Company (BMI), that were identified for a transportation contract earlier this month. “In this instance, Eskom requested its principal contractor, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Africa (MHPSA) to sub-contract 25% of its labour transportation requirement to the duly recognised Lephalale Taxi Associations since Eskom does not conduct business with associations,” said Medupi project manager Philip Dukashe, adding that the essence of the sub-contracting initiative was not only to share economic benefits, but also to transfer skills to BMI and to help it to acquire assets. Dukashe said Eskom and its contractors have spent more than R3 billion on local suppliers and more than R2 billion on infrastructure development in Lephalale since the start of the project. “This value will obviously increase as the

project progresses.” “Our contractors have formally trained about 2 700 workers of which 60% are local residents. One hundred and eleven local business owners were trained through Eskom entrepreneurship development initiatives, including the Eskom contractor’s Academy and IKUSASA, and 45 businesses are in incubation with the Lephalale Enterprise Development Centre.” Lephalale Mayor Jack Maeko said he is impressed with the commitment Eskom has shown towards local empowerment, but he would like to see an even bigger commitment to train and employ women and disabled people from the local communities. “Our people, with their aspirations and collective determination, are our most important resources. Development is not about the delivery of goods, it is about active involved and growing empowerment. Let us commit ourselves to this cause and move Lephalale forward.”

MARAPONG – Police kicked off its16 Days of Activism for No Violence towards Women and Children with a campaign in conjunction with the department of safety, security and liaison in Marapong on Tuesday. Warrant officer Frans Mokoena spoke to men who were the victims of abuse. “There is still a stigma that men can’t be the victims of abuse and this means that they might be afraid to report these cases because they feel that they won’t be believed. Through this campaign we want to encourage everybody to report any kind of abuse regardless of who the victim might be.”

Man arrested for dagga VAALWATER – A 44-year old man was arrested after the Lephalale Cluster police received information about illegal activities on a farm near Vaalwater. Questions about gender-based violence By Morakhu Kekae (morakhu@noordnuus.co.za) ALUTA PARK – The Rehoboth of Kings Community Centre (RKCC) acknowledged a need for awareness to highlight effective intervention when it comes to gender-based violence. The centre celebrated 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children at Chris Hani Primary School on Saturday. Aluta Park, known as Extension 17, has a high rate of substance abuse, teenage pregnancies and crime. “We used this event to raise awareness about the devastating impact of gender violence and to celebrate the victories gained by local non-profit organisations,” says RKCC manager, Mmakgoshi Mushi. “We challenge policies and practices that allow women to be targeted for acts of violence and demand that violence against women and children be widely recognised as an abuse of basic human rights,” she says, adding that the issue should be dealt with accordingly. Mushi said gender-based violence affects

everyone. “Gender violence destroys families, weakens the fabric of society, and takes a toll on our communities and our economy.”. The campaign highlighted the fact that everyone can be a victim of violence. The resolution will underline the humanitarian concerns raised by gender-based violence and point out concrete implementation measures that can be done, said Thandeka Mahlangu, who counsels in the area.“One of the fundamental values we hold is that everyone has the right to feel safe and be free from abuse,” she says. “Family violence is not only about physical assault, but refers to power and control issues which may include emotional and psychological torment which causes a person to live in fear.” The RKCC plays an integral role to empower particularly youngsters in the area. “Rehoboth have new programmes to enable individuals to gain skills and knowledge. Our programmes offer solution to common obstacles that youngsters experience. We offers skills surrounding social issues, business sector and sport, arts and culture,” Mushi concludes.

Avoid this dangerous road LEPHALALE – An open hole in George Avgos street, where Lephalale municipal workers apparently fixed water pipes, has been a cause for concern for more than a month. Large pieces of cement and debris that cover the tar road have forced motorists to make use of a dirt track next to the road. The Lephalale municipality did not respond to questions regarding the reason for the long delay in fixing the hole or explained why there are no road signs calling motorists to drive with caution.

“Die tuin is my hart se punt,” sê Kapp.
