Illegal dog fighting exposed By Martie Le Grange (martie@noordnuus.co.za)

Dogs (usually American pit bull terriers) are used to fight against each other until one dog wins the fight. In most cases a dog dies from his or her injuries that are usually arranged in front of spectators. Photo: NSPCA period not exceeding two years.” Northern News approached the Mogalakwena Municipality for comment as a municipal facility was allegedly used for the event. The divisional head of communications, Malesela Selokela, did not respond at the time of going to print. “Dog fighting condones a level of violence and cruelty that not only has consequences to the community that tolerates its existence, but it also walks hand- in hand with other criminal activities,” says Wilson.

MAHWELERENG – The Percy Fyfe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was called out to the Mahwelereng Sports Stadium on Saturday where an alleged dog fighting event involving pit bullterriers was taking place. Percy Fyfe SPCA manager Marcelle Maritz told Northern News that they received a call informing them that a dogfight gathering was taking place. Arriving on the scene, Maritz saw evidence of dog fighting taking place and was shocked to see about 18 pit bull dogs waiting. She called her staff, the neighbourhood watch and the police for backup, but before any action could be taken, the dog owners fled with their dogs. “It is just wrong to refer to the culprits as the ‘dog’s owners’, because in many cases, these animals are stolen from their rightful owners in residential areas.” Maritz insists that at least one dog fight occurred upon her arrival and refers to blood and fresh scars on some of the dogs that served as evidence. She says that she explained to the police that dog fighting is classified as animal cruelty. Colonel Ronel Otto, provincial police spokesperson, told Northern News that the police can only assist in breaking up dog fights. “It really is not the police’s responsibility, because there is no criminal complaint that we can investigate,” she

stated. Col Otto suggested that complaints should be dealt with by environmental affairs or by the municipality. Wendy Wilson, senior inspector of the Special Investigation Unit of the NSPCA was dismayed to learn that Limpopo police did not recognise animal abuse as a crime. She stated that Section 2a (1) of The Animal Protection Act of 1962 quotes, “any person who (a) possesses, keeps, imports, buys, sells, trains, breeds or has under his control an animal for the purpose of fighting of another animal; (b) baits or provokes or incites any animal to attack another animal or to proceed with the fighting of another animal; (c) for financial gain or as form of amusement promotes animal fights; (d) allows any of the acts refer to in paragraphs (a) to (c) to take place at any premises or place in his possession or under his charge or control; (e) owns, uses or controls any premises or place for the purpose or partly for the purpose of presenting animal fights on any such premises or place or who acts or assists in the management of any such premises or place, or who receives any consideration for the admission of any person to any such premises or place; or (f) is present as a spectator at any premises or place where any of the acts referred to in paragraphs (a) to (c) is taking place or where preparations are being made for such acts, shall be guilty of an offense and liable to conviction to a fine or imprisonment for a

RET Centre adds school building Reading rocket competition winners MOKOPANE – “We are so much more than just a school,” says Mokopane Destiny Academy (MDA) principal Fred van der Merwe. “We are making a difference in the lives of our learners and allowing them to settle into secure futures with confidence.”

By Helena Raats (helena@noordnuus.co.za)

Learners will start 2017 in a new, doublestory 1012 m² school building situated at the Resource, Education and Training (RET) Centre on the corner of Geyser and Fourie Streets. The school was founded in 2006 with 14 learners by Ps. Thomas and Minda Marshall from Destiny Alive Ministries. “Our children have since graduated from MDA and it is part of our vision to continue to invest in the future of Mokopane’s youth,” says Thomas Marshall. “We are proud of the teachers and staff employed at MDA who have proven that their hearts beat for the country’s next generation.” “This is only phase one, long-term plans are underway to expand further and to continue investing in the children of this town,” he says, adding that we, as a community, have a responsibility to equip our children to become the leaders of tomorrow. The school, currently situated in Schoeman Street, will be able to expand from 84 learners to about 210 learners. Registrations for the 2017’s Grade 1's have started and MDA will be able to cope with an influx of learners while keeping the ratio between children and educators favourable (1:8). MDA has ten qualified teachers as well as several teacher assistants and

offers education for Grade 1-12 along with additional programs to improve reading (Lab-on-Line) and mathematics (Mathletics). MDA will add a media centre and science lab in the new building. The school also offers sports, including soccer, gymnastics and MiniChess. MDA introduced the Cambridge international senior qualification earlier this year, making it the only private school in the Mokopane-area to offer this sought-after curriculum. “Cambridge qualifications have a proven reputation for being an excellent preparation for university, employment and life beyond,” says Cambridge International Examinations’ Mark Barber on the Cambridge web site. Cambridge IGSCE and Cambridge International AS and A-Level are recognised by universities and employers worldwide as evidence of academic ability.“As a school which follows Christian values, we will continue to work hand-inhand with parents to enable children to make a difference in their community,” says Van der Merwe. “We are teaching these children how to live and not only how to make a living.” For information, contact MDA during school hours on 015 491 2049 or email: office@ mda4life.com.

Building communities By Morakhu Kekae (morakhu@noordnuus.co.za) DANISANE – Magesi Media together with Bathuseng Youth Academy hosted an event to give back to the community last week. The event was aimed at providing school shoes to children in need. The planned handover was arranged for 200 kids from Madikotiputsoa and Johannes Masebe Primary schools. “The plan was to provide children from various schools with school shoes and

expand that to other learning materials such stationery, school bags, and school uniforms,” says Magesi Mokhondo, owner and artist from Magesi Media. “I have seen a lot of kids going to school without shoes and it affects their selfconfidence,” explains social worker Dan Motlala. “The learners withdraw socially because of stigmatising treatment from their peers.” The Mapela Business Chamber confirmed that they were awaiting the delivery of the shoes and would make sure that all 200 applicants receive their new shoes shortly.
