March turns violent Luiperdwelpie in dorp gevang By Amanda Basson (amanda@noordnuus.co.za)

MARAPONG – Three protestors were arrested by the police following an unprotected march in Marapong on Wednesday morning. The marchers allegedly threatened and manipulated commuters during the protest and blocked several roads with large stones and pieces of iron. Warrant officer Frans Mokoena, spokesperson for the Lephalale police, said that they received information that there would be a possible large-scale march to the municipality on Wednesday. “We attempted to meet with the parties involved on Tuesday, but were unable to secure a meeting. Early Wednesday morning there was a large crowd gathering at the Spar complex.” “We again tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution with them but while we were talking to the leaders some of the other people started to run across the road and threaten commuters who wanted to make use of taxis.” According to Mokoena, the situation became progressively more violent, forcing police to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. “We deployed a large number of

police in Marapong and will be monitoring the situation closely for any signs of further violence.” The Marapong Unemployment Forum, whose members allegedly formed part of the march (according to a Twitter feed), could not be reached for an official statement regarding the exact reason for the planned march. However, community members who attended a meeting held by the forum, said they were dissatisfied with job allocations, the unemployment rate and the general living conditions of people in Marapong. “We keep hearing about Eskom and Medupi employing local people, but when I look at my neighbours, we are all suffering because of a lack of employment. As far as we can see, people from the villages are prioritized for certain positions in the large companies while people who live in Marapong are left to fend for themselves.” Earlier this year a small group of members from the Marapong Unemployment Forum marched to the Lephalale municipality to hand over a memorandum to Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko, in which they demanded that he withdraw any involvement his office has with the allocation of jobs at the major developments in the Lephalale area, including Medupi Power Station..

Indien u enige wilde diere gewaar kan Howitt geskakel word by 082 496 1800 of Natuurbewaring by 015 491 8010/8011.

How to stop falling for fake news! Potential partner for tin project Chances are you might have fallen for one or two fake articles. Want to know how to avoid it? Think of the most horrible or weird thing that could happen to people in the news or in your country. A petrol bomb thrown in the Oscar Pistorius judge’s car? South African universities now offering a B.Sc degree in Witchcraft? Share it on your Facebook and voila! You have now joined the ranks of distributing fake news websites that are mushrooming across SA. These websites exist to make money from the ads they display, media attorney Nicholas Hall explained to Cape Talk radio. The more outrageous the story, the higher the traffic to their sites and the more money they can make. So what’s the harm in fooling people and making a buck from that? Besides causing pain and suffering to people mentioned in these fake stories, they can harden stereotypes and lead people to make poor health decisions, among other reasons. Facebook is the most important weapon in these websites’ arsenal. You may have heard about the social media network’s “algorithm”. That’s just a fancy word for the calculations that Facebook does to work out which posts are the most popular. The more people click on a post, comment on or share it, the more people Facebook shows it to – and that is how a post can go viral. How do I recognise a fake news story? We have all become reporters in some way, writes the editor-in-chief of Eyewitness News, Katy Katopodis. Every internet user now has the power to publish stories or videos that only journalists used to have. As our tools for getting and spreading information become more sophisticated, so should we. It starts with a simple step: by pausing for a minute and looking closely at the thing you want to share. Then follow some of the tips shared by Mybroadband. 1. Click on the website’s “about us” section or look for a disclaimer. Many fake news websites attempt to

soften their dishonesty by saying that they cannot guarantee that their content is true – either in the “about us” section or in a “disclaimer”. You will find these links at the top of the website or right at the bottom. 2. Look for a “satire” or “fauxtire” label Genuine satirical websites – like South Africa’s ZANEWS – try to make you laugh about real news events. Dreaming up false stories is not satire, but labelling it as such is another way in which fake news websites attempt to get away with their lies. 3. Search for the owner of the website By typing in the website address on a lookup website you can see who registered the address (called a domain). Compare the results for News24 and Mzansi Stories: News24’s registration shows the address, telephone numbers and email addresses of its owners, Media24. By contrast, Mzansi Stories hides behind a domain registration company, making them virtually untraceable. This is of course not a guarantee that the site is fake but should set alarm bells off. Use these lookup websites: International website addresses (.com) Local website addresses (.co.za) What can I do to stop fake news websites? Be a responsible internet user. The internet has the potential for great good and terrible harm. It is in your hands.

Play an active role in limiting the harm by vetting the content you want to share. If you don’t have time to follow the verifications tips listed before, rather not share the story. Another reason why fake news sites make money is because it costs nothing to produce, unlike the money needed to pay reporters and provide them with cars and equipment to chase a story. (Yes, sometimes they get it wrong but they try not to.) Take out a subscription to a news site or donate. Our democracy needs journalism to function. Help spread the debunks - It sucks to be a party pooper pointing out that a juicy bit of information is untrue. (Ask us!) But we need your help to counter false news. That is because research has suggested that false stories travel much further than the articles that debunk them. Let’s change that. Flag false news on Facebook - While Facebook has promised to act more decisively against false news, there is currently an option available to flag news feed items as false news. This will help it appear less in the news feed. There are issues with this method, though, but until we have a better way take the time to help bring the fakes down. Robberies continue

MOKOPANE - Bushveld Minerals Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for its Mokopane tin project with South African group, VBKom. The consultant will carry out due diligence ahead of a possible agreement to provide capital investment and technical support for the development of the Groenfontein and Zaaiplaats deposits. A binding deal would see VBKom provide capital and technical support in return for a stake that will not exceed 50%. The MoU provides for VBKom to conduct due diligence on the Mokopane tin project for a period to 31 January. A scoping study on the deposits at Mokopane in 2014 indicated an initial 691 000 tons a year run-of-mine operation, producing 700 tons of tin each year to generate a pre-tax return of 34.6% using a long-term tin price of $22 928/ton. Capital expenditure to build the mine would US$16-million . Fortune Mojapelo, Bushveld Minerals’ chief executive, said: “The signed MoU, which introduces a credible potential technical and financial partner for the Mokopane tin project.”

Lansie vir Lephalale Munisipaliteit

Martie Le Grange (martie@noordnuus.co.za) MOKOPANE – CCTV footage at First National Bank (FNB) shows a woman being robbed by armed suspects in front of the building while on her way to deposit cash on Wednesday afternoon. Elsabe Nel, operations manager of FNB in Mokopane, urges people to be vigilant when they plan to deposit cash. Northern News spoke to Nel not long after the business woman and her colleague were targeted by armed robbers only moments after they got out of their vehicle. Nel said the footage was not clear, but according to a security guard that witnessed the incident, the two suspects came from across the street. They pointed a gun at their victim who surrendered the undisclosed amount of cash. The security guard said the suspects then fled in a white GTI Golf. No shots were fired and no one was injured. The Mokopane police is investigating the incident. Several incidents of armed robbery was reported over the past month. In three incidences, the victims were on their way to their banks to deposit cash.

Two arrested for shoplifting LEPHALALE – Two men were arrested for shoplifting after the Lephalale police received information that the vehicle that they were travelling in was full of suspected stolen items from various stores in the Lephalale area on Monday. According to warrant officer Frans Mokoena from the Lephalale police, they found baby formula, school clothes and underwear in the vehicle, a red Toyota Tazz, parked at the Marula Mile complex. “At this stage the investigation is still ongoing but we have positive information linking the suspects to various cases of shoplifting.”

Challenge for Calvin

LEPHALALE – The intricacies of sign language mathematics is a challenge that few people are willing to take on, but Calvin Mocheko, a teacher’s aide at Sedibeng Combined school’s deaf section, does not shy away from difficult situations. Calvin is one of the few people in SA who enrolled for a sign language short course at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2017 to learn the ins and outs of sign language math. “Sign language in itself is not easy to grasp because of multitude of differences when going from one area to another but learning the complex math systems is taking things to a whole new level and we are thankful that Calvin is willing to take up the challenge,” said Bone Minnaar the school’s principle. On the photo is a very proud Bone Minnaar with Calvin Mocheko.

Moving towards a non-violent society

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is an annual international campaign that aims to create awareness among South Africans about the negative impact of violence in our society.

The campaign, which runs from 25 November to 10 December, coincides with International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November), International Human Rights Day (10 December), as well as World Aids day (1 December). The objectives of the campaign are to rid our society of violence and to encourage all communities to collectively take action against violence. “During the campaign we created awareness about abusive behavior and what to do if you should fall victim to abuse,” says SAPS Mahwelereng cluster commander Brigadier Ria Mkhabela. “We have no tolerance for violent behavior and will arrest those guilty of it.” You can support the campaign by wearing a white ribbon during the 16-day period. A white ribbon is a symbol of peace

"We should see every child in our community as our own child and should admonish them when we see that they are doing something that is not right. This means that we have to speak out when we know that our neighbour’s child is being neglected or abused,”says warrant officer Frans Mokoena, spokesperson for the Lephalale police. “We have to teach our children to talk to us about what is going on in their lives and to trust their intuition when a situation doesn’t feel right. They should know the difference between being touched in a loving manner and being touched in an inappropriate way. The most important thing is that they should feel confident to speak out when they feel uncomfortable or are being abused,” Dr Susan Rothman Lyons, a traumatologist in Lephalale. Water safety could save a life Krugies se sport uitblinkers LEPHALALE – With the holidays upon us and temperatures soaring into the mid to high 30’s, there is nothing better than to relax next to a clear-blue swimming pool or even, if you are lucky, a well-deserved vacation at the seaside, but where there is water there is always a very real possibility that a drowning could occur. Mrs Grand South Africa 2016, Rina van Schalkwyk, was nominated as one of the Top 100 Difference Makers in South Africa for her hard work in combating drowning incidents and agreed to share some tips with Northern News to help minimize the risks. “I started my campaign after a close friend’s son and local child, Reinhardt Drewel, passed away in a drowning incident last year February this is also why I decided to name the Reinhardt Drewel Foundation SA (RDF SA) in his memory,” says Van Schalkwyk who was nominated by Julie Steynberg the Executive Director of Difference Makers International South Africa. Van Schalkwyk says that she had many reasons why she started RDF SA, but that the most important one is to save lives and to assist children with disabilities due to non-fatal drowning. “I want to improve these kids’ quality of living because there has never been a welfare organization in South Africa that supported these children or their families.” RDF SA is currently supporting three disabled children between the ages of two and six who are from different towns in South Africa. “As an organization we identified some steps that could help to keep children safe when they are around water,” says Van Schalkwyk. These tips include: ¾¾ Uninterrupted, vigilant supervision of children in and around any water source ¾¾ Empty any containers in and around your home that can accumulate water ¾¾ Empty the bath immediately after bath time and don’t leave the bath plug in the bath ¾¾ Never leave your baby or toddler alone in the bath or under the supervision of another
