Reversing safely 360° walk around check

SAFETY NOTICE

30 seconds is all it takes to do the 360° Walk Around Check prior to reversing, both at work and at home. Where possible, avoid reversing and if you are a passenger, look out for your buddy and be a spotter / guide for the driver. What is a 360° walk around check? The driver completes a check around the vehicle and assesses that the areas above or beneath the vehicle and that the surrounding area is clear and stable. There should be no obstructions or hazards that the vehicle could collide with. Why should we perform this check? To prevent injury or damage to people, the vehicle or equipment. Reversing, even at low speeds, creates the potential for a serious incident to occur. Each year, seven children across Australia are killed and 60 seriously injured due to driveway incidents. Morris had 17 reversing incidents in the last 12 months, however, we have had zero incidents at sites after they have rolled out this initiative. When and who should perform a 360 walk around check? A check should be completed by the driver prior to reversing any vehicle.

SAFER TOGETHER The Queensland Natural Gas Exploration & Production Industry Safety Forum

Morris Executive General Manager, HSEQ, Greg Chrisfield, presented the above initiative at the request of Safer Together – the Queensland Natural Gas Exploration & Production Industry Safety Forum, which Morris is a member of. Safer Together is a not-for-profit, memberled organisation of Operating Companies and Contract Partner Companies, committed to creating the leadership and collaboration needed, to build a strong and consistent safety culture in our rapidly evolving industry. “I was pleased to present this at the recent Drilling & Completions Industry Incident Review Panel in Brisbane. Morris was invited to present it as a Safety Innovation & Improvement Initiative so it was great to be recognised by the Oil & Gas Industry.” ~ Greg Chrisfield, EGM, HSEQ

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Cloudbreak, Hamilton & Karntama The Fortescue Metals Group HSE Compliance audits are completed every year at Hamilton, Cloudbreak and Karntama. The audits are conducted to analyse and identify gaps within the Morris Management Systems, and to ensure our systems and safe work processes are implemented across the workforce and sites. The audit tool used by the FMG HSE team is comprehensive with very little room for non-compliance. Although Morris has achieved good results in the past, this year was the first time all sites passed the 85% score without a re-audit. All three sites achieved an 86% score, with the auditor commenting that Morris was only the second contractor she has scored over 80%. A huge thank you to the HSEQ advisors on site but more importantly, every single Morris worker that demonstrates outstanding safety behaviour. This is truly a reflection of our safety culture. What does this great result mean? It means that we continue to do everything possible to work safely and minimise risk. We look out for ourselves and each other. ~ Dean McGlynn, HSEQ Manager, WSB

SUSTAINING OUR COMMUNITIES Kulbardi Entrepreneurship Program Morris is proud to be a sponsor of the Kulbardi Entrepreneuship Program. Kulbardi, a Morris supplier and Australia’s largest Aboriginal-owned office products company, launched the Kulbardi Entrepreneurship Program (KEP) in Perth on Monday 30th January. CEO of Kulbardi, Kim Collard said, “The Kulbardi Fund was set up to design, fund and leverage community programs that have long term outcomes. We want to create sustainable programs that really have an impact on the Aboriginal community.” The program includes 10 Aboriginal participants from across Western Australia. As part of the program, the participants learnt how to write a business plan, marketing and sales, pricing and financial analysis, as well as tips on pitching and presenting, delivered by industry professionals including Kulbardi, Ausum Initiatives, Student Edge, The Brand Agency and Alyka. At the end of KEP, the students presented their business case to a panel of judges, with the winner receiving seed funding to kick-start their project. Shaun Palmer, Morris Executive General Manager, WSB shared, “Morris is proud to support KEP, which is in line with our commitment to provide meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal people to develop and grow within a supportive and collaborative environment.” Other corporate sponsors include Rio Tinto, Toyota and Western Power.

A PEEK INTO LIVES OFF SITE

Morris Recruitment Officer June Stack, gave us a glimpse of what her family gets up to outside of work. The annual Swan Community Christmas party held last year, was organised by her sister, Di Ryder. An important community event with a turnout of almost 1000, it took a year of planning and offered rides and entertainers for children, food and drinks, Christmas hampers, raffles and much more. Her son, Harley Stack, performed an Indigenous Culture dance and her niece, Tash Nannup, was the official photographer. June and her family are active supporters and volunteers at this important community event each year. This event was featured in national Indigenous newspaper, The Koori Mail.

3B MATTERS 3B POSTER

~ Allison Roach, Acting Cultural Lead

In order to reinforce our commitment and focus on safety, the 3B Service Model was improved last year to reflect this. We added ‘Look out for your buddy’ in the Be Connected pillar, to portray the importance of looking out for each other at work and making sure everyone works safely. Please ensure that all 3B posters on display is the latest version. If not, the most updated version can be downloaded from The Hive HERE.

3B RESET Below is a snippet from an article that I was reading and I wanted to share it with everyone. As I think about our very own 3B Service Model, it reinforces that 3B can help us to think about and check our attitudes. The 3B reset principle is a tool that also helps us to bring our thoughts, actions, attitude “above the line” and think about how we can Be Friendly, Be Connected and Be Real. “I am going to ask you a strange question. First of all, listen to your thoughts. Would you label them as above the line, or below the line? Thoughts are very powerful. They affect your general attitude. The attitude you carry reflects on your appearance – unless, of course, you are a great actor. And it doesn’t end there. Your attitude can also affect people around you. The type of attitude you carry depends on you. It can be either positive or negative. Positive thoughts have a filling effect. They are invigorating and the people around the person carrying positive thoughts are usually energised by this type of attitude. Negative thoughts, however, have a sapping effect on other people. Aside from making you look gloomy and sad, negative thoughts can turn a festive gathering into a funeral wake. A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative attitude repels them. People tend to shy away from those who carry a negative attitude.”

3B SHARES AND STORIES The 3B shares and stories that we have been receiving shows that we are making 3B a part of our daily lives, which is helping to create a “sense of community” within our teams and our environment. Do you as a Morris team member share your 3B stories within your teams/site/office? One of Morris’ ELT member puts together a list of some of the 3B acknowledgements he has received from other departments, in relation to his team and shares them through a ‘3B share’. What a great way to Connect and celebrate our 3B successes, which ultimately helps us to become the business customers remember with a smile and a global leader in customer service. What do you do to celebrate your 3B successes?

Thank you and have a fantastic 3B day.
