SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY

By: Kay Christopher

Mama's Sewing Machine

By O.I. Seenya

• After a tree was discovered laying completely across a road, the Roane County Highway Department immediately removed it and cleaned it up, leaving no trace behind. • A lady at Food City running all over the parking lot retrieving Coke cans rolling down the parking lot when the carton broke. • Rumors of the Dollar General Store moving to a new location in Kingston. • A lady waiting several minutes for an elevator door to open, when she realized she had not pushed the button.

Why do 'fat chance' and 'slim chance' mean the same thing?

A sewing machine was a necessary item to have when I was growing up. Very few kids got to buy new clothes every year when school began, or dress like a princess on Easter Sunday, so our clothes were made at home on an old sewing machine. Although electric sewing machines had been on the market for several years, my mother never had one, nor did she want one. She had an old one that was in a wooden cabinet and had a metal paddle that she pumped as she sewed. It had a cord that wrapped round a big wheel on the side that kept the machine rolling smoothly. She had this machine all our lives and used it regularly to make or sew our clothes. She also saved thread from clothes that were worn out. If it was a dress, she'd remove every button and all the thread around the hem and save to either make a quilt or something else. She'd use the buttons on another dress that she would make. Back then, we also wore hand-me-downs. Since I was the baby, and had three older sisters, the clothes were pretty worn out and faded by the time I grew into them. But these were used as our “play clothes. When we got home from church or school, we immediately put our play clothes on and hung the church and school clothes up to wear again. They weren't dirty and didn't get washed every time we wore

them. Every Easter we all had pretty new dresses to wear. Not the store bought one, but the ones Mama had bought the fabric for and sewed them together for us, so we'd be dressed as pretty as any other kids in our church. Every summer, she made our homemade shorts and little tops from her old machine for when we went someplace special. When the school year started, we usually had three new dresses each to start the year. Back then, girls had to wear dresses or skirts to school. If you wore pants (like when the weather was 0 degrees and we had to walk to school), you had to wear them under your dress or skirt. Also, the attire for a girl or woman in church was a dress or skirt. They would have been escorted out of the church if they had worn pants into God's house. It had something to do with respect for God and the church. Today, some kids have never seen a sewing machine, and if they did, they wouldn't know what it was for. We have spoiled ourselves, and all the generations behind us will be worse than we are, by simply not reusing items, and throwing things away just because we are tired of it. Isn't it sad?

Jesus took an atheist out fishing and the atheist accidentally dropped an oar and watched it float away. Jesus stepped out of the boat, walked across the water to the oar, grabbed it, and walked back to the boat. The next day, a friend asked the atheist if he had enjoyed fishing with the Lord. “It was okay,” he replied, “but would you believe that guy can’t swim?” The church installed hot air hand dryers in the bathrooms to cut down on paper towel waste and save money. They worked just fine, but the Rev. Jones ordered them removed after someone scrawled a note on the wall next to it: “For the pastor’s latest sermon, push here!”

The Poor Pirate

A sailor meets a pirate in a bar. The pirate has a peg leg, a hook, and an eye patch. How’d you end up with a peg leg?” asks the sailor. “I was swept overboard in a storm,” says the pirate. “A shark bit off me whole leg.” “Wow!” said the sailor. “What about the hook?” “We were boarding an enemy ship, battling the other seamen with swords. One of them cut me hand clean off.” “And the eye patch?” “A seagull dropping fell in me eye,” replied the pirate. “You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?” the sailor asked incredulously. “It was me first day with the hook.”

The Way The Cookie Crumbles About a year ago, Qasin Saleem, a doctoral student at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom used a sophisticated digital-image processing system to study some freshly baked cookies while they were cooling. He and his colleagues observed cracks appearing on them only a few minutes after they were removed from the oven. After an additional observation period, they concluded that during this cooling process, moisture drifts from the center of the cookie, building stress toward the outside while, indeed, the center actually shrinks. This results in the formation of tiny cracks, which often cause cookies to crumble during handling and shipment. And here’s what we want to know … Low-fat, low-sugar cookies fared the worst, crumbling the most. Sugary, high-fat (more delicious) varieties were far less likely to crumble. It figures that the sugary, high-fat cookies are the ones that stick around (in every way)! Guess these are the ones you’ll want to ship to us at Christmas. So … well … that seems to be the way the cookie crumbles.

FUNNY RESEARCH AWARD RECIPIENTS

Here are the recipients of five of the most memorable so-called Ig Nobel awards of recent times. 1. A study describing a method for collecting whale snot by using a remote-control helicopter. (Won by a team of British and Mexican scientists.) 2. The discovery that roller-coaster riding can be a treatment for symptoms of asthma. (Won by two psychologists from The Netherlands.) 3. A study demonstrating that people slip and fall less often on ice when they wear their socks on the outside of their shoes. (Won by three researchers from New Zealand.) 4. A study showing that cows with names give more milk than nameless bovines. (Won by two British researchers.) 5. The invention of a brassiere that in an emergency can be quickly converted into two protective face masks—one for the wearer and one for a bystander. (Won by three American public health scientists, who were also granted a patent for the device.)

Me And The Officers

You will not believe what just happened .. I was pulling into the gas station near the house.. When I walked up I noticed these two police officers looking at a woman who was smoking while fueling up , I saw her & was like .. hmm what an idiot , with the police right there too ! So I went in & got my soda & as I was checking out I hear someone screaming. I look out side & that woman's arm was on fire! She was tossing & waving her arm around & just going crazy ! I ran outside & the officers had put her on the ground & were putting the fire out with an extinguisher. When I walked out the officers put hand cuffs on her & were about to put her in the police car. So I was thinking what in the world , so being the concerned citizen that I am I asked the officers what they were arresting her for .. figuring that catching her arm ablaze would be punishment enough. So, he looked me dead in my eye & said .. 'waving a firearm'.

13 Awesome Famous People You May Not Know Were From Tennessee

When you think of the glitz and glamour of celebrity, you most likely conjure up images of sunny California and the Hollywood sign perched high atop the Los Angeles Hills. Before you assume too much, take a look at these radically talented individuals that hail from anywhere but the west coast. 1) You may remember Justin Timberlake as the kid on “Mickey Mouse Club” or the musician bringing sexy back, but he’s actually put his name on over twenty films. Don’t be too quick to slough off this Memphis native – he’s credited with comedies such as, “Friends With Benefits” and the Oscar-winning film, “Trouble with the Curve.” 2) Before making sweet music on the hit TV show, “Glee,” Chord Overstreet was born and raised in good ol’ Nashville, Tennessee. The rugged blonde has since gone on to foster a solid career in television. 3) This southern beauty was born to a homemaker and small business owner in Memphis. The young Cybill Shepherd won “Miss Teenage Memphis” in 1966, which only proved to be the first notch in her award-winning belt. Shepherd has since modeled for major magazines and been credited as an actress both in movies and on television. 4) Known for her adorably pixied brunette mop and spin as Cinderella on the magical television show, “Once Upon a Time,” Ginnifer Goodwin found her start in west Tennessee. The Memphis darling paid her dues to her home state when she starred in the Oscar-winning film, “Walk the Line,” about country music star Johnny Cash. 5) If you’ve ever hummed along to that incredibly catchy, “Pirates of the Caribbean” score or hidden under your covers after a screening of, “The Ring,” then you have Gore Verbinski to thank. The quirky and adventurous director is a native of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. 6) James Denton is a huge advocate for his hometown, as after his stint on, “Desperate Housewives” the Nashville boy moved right back home. He still works extensively in television and appeared in the religious based film, “Grace Unplugged” in 2013. 7) Christina Hendricks didn’t spend a large amount of time in Tennessee, but her birth certificate reads, “Knoxville.” Her work as the character of Joan on “Mad Men” has given the east Tennessee beauty a whopping five Emmy nominations. 8) Academy Award winner Kathy Bates is most famous for her portrayal of Misery in the horror film by the same name, but the “Titanic” star breathed her first in Memphis. Her role in, “Fried Green Tomatoes” and in the more recent cult-hit, “American Horror Story” has garnered Bates a solid spot in the nation’s heart. 9) Memphis born Lucy Hale is a budding country music star and petite actress who is best known for her portrayal of goth-princess Aria on, “Pretty Little Liars.” Her tiny frame and girlish looks have solidified her reign as a tween queen. 10) Better known for her modelesque figure than her acting, Megan Fox was born and spent the first half of her childhood in Rockwood, Tennessee. Although she continued her creative training in Florida, you can be sure this southern beauty has a special place in her heart for the homeland. 11) Before the success of television show, “Hannah Montana,” and the infamous 2013 VMA’s, young Miley Cyrus spent her days on the family ranch outside of Nashville. She can still be spotted from time to time, visiting the place that her family still calls home. 12) Before making a name for himself with films such as, “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill,” Quentin Tarantino was born to a nurse and actor in the east Tennessee city of Knoxville. The award winning director has made quite a name for himself since his days spent in the south. 13) Of course, we're not going to forget Oliver Springs own Janelle Arthur who is making her mark in country music as we speak. (Notice we have two on this list from Roane County? So proud of them.

From the Pulpit

Groundhog’s Day

Falling midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, Feb. 2 is significant day in ancient and modern traditions. The Celts celebrated it as Imbolc, a pagan festival marking the beginning of spring. As Christianity spread through Europe, Imbolc evolved into Candlemas, a feast commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the holy temple in Jerusalem. In certain parts of Europe, Christians believed that a sunny Candlemas meant another 40 days of cold and snow. Germans developed their own take on the legend, pronouncing the day sunny only if badgers and other animals glimpsed their own shadows. When German immigrants settled Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, they brought the custom with them, choosing the native groundhog as the annual forecaster.

5 The Roane Reader

The new minister in the local congregation learned that one of the wealthiest members on the roll was not a regular contributor or attender, so he made a phone call. “From all appearances your business is doing quite well, yet you haven’t given a penny to your own church,” the pastor began. “Wouldn’t you like to help us in ministry this year?” The lapsed member replied, “Did you know that my mother is ill, with extremely expensive medical bills?” “Um, no,” mumbled the pastor. “Or that my brother is blind and unemployed? Or that my sister’s husband died, leaving her broke with four kids?” “I … I … I had no idea.” “So,” said the member, “if I don’t give them any money, why would I give any to the church?” Two pastors were riding very fast on a motorcycle. They were promptly stopped by a policeman who said, “What do you think you are doing? What if you have an accident?” The pastor driving said, “Don’t worry, Jesus is with us.” “In that case,” the policeman said, “I have to book you. Three people are not allowed to ride on a motorcycle.” From a church bulletin: “A new loudspeaker system has been installed in the church. It was given by one of our members in honor of his wife.”

Church SALT

TO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE MR TRUMP AS OUR PRESIDENT

Our church has a singles ministry called SALT (Single Adults Learning Together). During a recent service, our minister mentioned SALT in the announcements. “If any of you are single,” he told the congregation, “be sure to check out SALT. Those initials stand for…”

For ALL of you Who Despise Trump, I want to tell you that I TOTALLY understand. For EIGHT MISERABLE Years, People Like Me Had to Put Up with the MOST Inept President in America's History.

The minister paused a moment before continuing. At last he seemed to remember their meaning. “They stand for Single Adults Living Together.”

“I love St. Jude’s Hospital. Please help support them”. (Kayden Christopher)

We did NOT Vote for him, NOR did We Riot in the streets or ask for a Recount, or Stress Timeouts because Obama Got elected. We sucked it up, and gave him a chance. True to form, as he is a self-admitted socialist, Obama began his Destruction of America, and our foreign policies. Now that TRUMP will be President of The United States Of America (God I Love Saying That), REAL HOPE & CHANGE is going to be the order of the day. You WONT Find Trump Playing Golf, while Americans are being beheaded, You WONT find Trump playing Golf while one of our Active Duty Marines is being beaten in a Mexican Jail, You WONT Find Trump Turning His Back On Americans Calling for Help and Leaving them to DIE, You Won’t find Trump Trading or releasing ANY Terrorists for a Deserter, AND You Will NEVER See Trump Sending BILLIONS of our DOLLARS in Cash To TERRORIST COUNTRIES! The PC Days ARE Over... GOD Has Blessed America, AND AMERICA, Despite How ALL of you Socialists, American Flag Burning, Malcontents, Feel about it, IS GOING TO BE A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AGAIN!!! Billy Allmon US Navy SEAL ret.

Needing More Faith A distraught man sought the advice of his wise pastor. “I was born blind,” he exclaimed, “But some people tell me that if I had more faith I could be healed.” The pastor paused a moment before speaking. “I see you carry a cane,” she said. “Whenever people say that, hit them over the head with the cane. Then tell them if they had more faith it wouldn’t hurt!”

Throw It Away A preacher was completing a temperance sermon: with great expression he said, “If I had all the beer in the world, I’d take it and throw it into the river.” With even greater emphasis he said, “And if I had all the wine in the world, I’d take it and throw it into the river. And then finally, he said, “And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I’d take it and throw it into the river.” He sat down. The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, “For our closing song, let us sing Hymn # 365: “Shall We Gather at the River.”

Voice Crying Out in the Desert, John 1:6-8, 19-28 John the Baptist was a voice crying out in the desert, "Repent. Say you are sorry for your sins. Try really hard not to sin again. Your savior is coming soon. Be ready for him. He wants your love and attention. He wants you to forgive yourself as he has forgiven you. He wants you to forgive others." Wrap your love and forgiveness in a box and place it beside your bed on Christmas morning. Whenever you feel lonely or upset because you made a mistake, open God's box. God will cover you with forgiveness and love. Tell God how much you love him. Once you are feeling better, you can close the box and put it back beside your bed until you need it again. 10 Things You Should Do Before You Book a Cruise

When it comes to finding an affordable vacation, the cruise industry’s got you covered. The very nature of cruising—with your transportation, accommodations, meals, and entertainment all rolled into one fare—is an incredibly efficient and affordable way to travel. That being said, people are still always on the hunt for additional discounts, so here are our 10 tried-and-true ways to find the lowest cruise fare for your next vacation. 1. BOOK EARLY OR BOOK LATE Deciding exactly when to book your cruise can actually save you money, but divining the actual time-line can be tricky. There are two schools of thought on this: Some say book as early as possible to net the largest discount while others with more flexibility in their schedules often hold off and commit to a cruise late, when the cruise line is more apt to offer some last-minute discounts. Both methods can net good pricing. 2. BUY A CRUISE DURING ONE OF THE INDUSTRY’S SALE SEASONS Cruise lines traditionally unveil new packages and promotions during Wave Season (January through March) each year. However, the industry has also spearheaded some other annual sales. In November, watch for National Cruise Vacation Week as well as deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Many travel agencies that cater to the cruise industry also host their own sales on major holidays to drum up additional business. Watch for these sales events and compare prices; sometimes you’ll find savings on fares and other times you’ll instead receive perks like upgraded cabins, complimentary beverage packages, pre-paid gratuities, or shipboard credit. 3. BE LOYAL This tip is fairly obvious, but it’s important to remember that nearly every cruise line has its own loyalty program that offers discounts and perks to previous guests. Select a cruise brand (or two or three) that you love and stick with them. That way, when you book future cruises you’ll receive “alumni” discounts or other privileges. 4. FORGE A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH A TRAVEL AGENT Many of us love booking travel plans ourselves but when it comes to cruising, it's worth it to find an excellent travel agent who focuses on this vacation market. Agents who specialize in cruising know the ships inside and out and have sailed them, so they can advise which ship is right for you and what cabins are right for your party. They also often offer excellent perks above and beyond any special pricing being offered by the cruise line itself. Extras can range from onboard cocktail parties to

pre-paid gratuities to shipboard credit and more. A good travel agent is also worth his or her weight in gold if you encounter a problem. It’s your agent’s mission to take care of any and all issues, and that’s a huge relief when something threatens to ruin your vacation. 5. DON’T FORGET YOUR STATUS Are you a senior citizen, a member of the military, a teacher, a police officer, or a firefighter/EMT? If so, some cruise lines offer valuable discounts to members of those groups. The discounts aren’t always available for every sailing, but it’s worth looking into the options. 6. COMPARE EMBARKATION DATES Once you’ve selected the cruise line and itinerary, be sure to review prices for different embarkation dates. You could save several hundred dollars by simply selecting a different departure date. 7. LOOK INTO DISCOUNTS FROM BIG-BOX STORES AND FLASH SALES SITES Cruise lines are always partnering with different retail outlets to offer discounted cruises. Costco Travel often has excellent pricing, and you can sometimes find good cruise fares being sold on flash sales sites like Jetsetter, LuxuryLink, and even Groupon. 8. ARRANGE YOUR OWN SHORE EXCURSIONS Sometimes it’s cheaper to book your own shore excursions instead of using the services provided by the ship. Visit Fodor’s Travel Talk Forums to get advice and recommendations from other travelers. 9. WATCH THAT CRUISE FARE After you’ve booked a cruise, be sure to monitor the fluctuation of the cruise fare. You (or your travel agent) can call and get the lower price up until the time when you make final payment. If it’s after final payment, ask for a cabin upgrade. 10. INVEST IN TRAVEL INSURANCE Protect your cruise investment with travel insurance or understand that you’re self-insuring. Self-insuring is a valid option when booking an inexpensive cruise, but it might not suit your purposes if you’re planning a multi-week voyage halfway around the world. No one wants to lose a cruise fare that was several thousand dollars.

WHAT YOUR FAVORITE PIZZA TOPPING SAYS ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY Dr. Alan Hirsch, director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, has found that personalities can be revealed by choices of pizza toppings. Nontraditional toppings, such as pineapple: You’re an aggressive, achievement-oriented, natural leader who doesn’t suffer fools easily. One meat: You’re an irritable, argumentative, procrastinator who frequently conveniently “forgets” obligations at work and home. Several meats: You’re a dramatic, seductive, extrovert who thrives as the center of attention, craves novelty, and is impeccably groomed. One vegetable: You’re empathetic, understanding, well-adjusted, and easygoing—the ideal parent. Several vegetables: You’re trustworthy, loyal, dependable, humble, introverted, and function best in a group environment. Extra cheese: Well, everyone likes extra cheese.

What An Awesome God We Serve! Have you ever stopped and wondered what God has done in your life that you aren't even aware of? Maybe He healed you before you even knew you were sick. Perhaps He saved you from a fatal car crash that never happened. I have felt like God has protected me more times than I can count, so I can only imagine how many times He has rescued me when I was unaware that I was even in danger. Take a moment to thank God for protecting you. He is ALWAYS watching over you and He's there for you even when you don't realize it. What an awesome God we serve!

Geronimo-Who Was He? Geronimo - "the one who yawns"; June 16, 1829 – February 17, 1909) was a prominent leader from the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. From 1850 to 1886 Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands—the Chihenne, the Chokonen and the Nednhi—to carry out numerous raids as well as resistance to US and Mexican military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora, and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache-United States conflict, that started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848. Geronimo was not counted a chief among the Apache. At any one time, only about 30 to 50 Apaches would be numbered among his personal following. However, since he was a superb leader in raiding and revenge warfare he frequently led numbers larger than his own following. During Geronimo's final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886 he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. Reservation life was confining to the free-moving Apache people, and they resented restrictions on their customary way of life. In 1886, after an intense pursuit in Northern Mexico by U.S. forces that followed Geronimo's third 1885 reservation "breakout", Geronimo surrendered for the last time to Lt. Charles Bare Gatewood, an Apache-speaking West Point graduate who had earned Geronimo's respect a few years before. Geronimo was later transferred to General Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon, just north of the Mexican/American boundary. Miles treated Geronimo as a prisoner of war and acted promptly to remove Geronimo first to Fort Bowie, then to the railroad at Bowie Station, Arizona where he and 27 other Apaches were sent off to join the rest of the Chiricahua tribe which has been previously exiled to Florida.[6] In his old age, Geronimo became a celebrity. He appeared at fairs, including the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, where he reportedly rode a ferris wheel and sold souvenirs and photographs of himself. However, he was not allowed to return to the land of his birth. He died at the Fort Sill hospital in 1909. He was still a prisoner of war. He is buried at the Fort Sill Indian Agency Cemetery surrounded by the graves of relatives and other Apache prisoners of war

When little ones are learning to put their shoes on, learning which shoe goes on the right foot can be a challenge. Place a piece of adhesive tape on the inside of the right shoe with the word right and a star, this will help them to recognize the right from the left. To keep socks separated in pairs, use a safety pin on a pair when you take them off. They will be together through the washing and drying process and you won’t be looking all through a drawer trying to match colors, plus if you buy the same type of socks often, the pair will wear out together. You won’t have a hole in one sock with a new sock on the other foot. To clean jewelry, put about a cup of warm water and a half of cup of ammonia into a bowl, then let the jewelry soak for at least a half hour. This works for silver, diamonds and other gems, plus gold. Some people put a couple of teaspoons of dish washing soap in the mixture. An old soft toothbrush can be used if there are grooves in the jewelry that didn’t get clean enough. To clean your computer board, lift off the keys unless they are designed with springs so they can’t be removed. Use a microfiber cloth on the board. Keep some type of cloth over your keyboard when you are not using it to keep off dust and pet hair. After scrubbing your shower doors to remove hard water stains, wipe and shine the doors with lemon oil wax and the water will bead up and keep the doors clear for a longer period of time. To keep butter from sliding around the butter dish, wash the dish with hot water, then put the cold butter on the dish and refrigerate. A little butter will melt on the dish and hold the stick in place. Window cleaner will clean spots on rugs and carpets, so you don’t have to buy an expensive carpet cleaning product. I have also used peroxide and Palmolive soap to remove red wine stains on carpet. Lemons and limes will remove smelly odors from your hands, like after you peel onions. Swedish Meatballs 2 slices day-old white bread, crumbled 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1 teaspoon butter 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger (optional) 1 small onion, minced 1 tablespoon butter 2/3 pound ground beef 1/4 cup chicken broth 1/3 pound finely ground pork 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 egg 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional) 2 cups beef broth, or as needed salt and pepper to taste 1/2 (8 ounce) container sour cream Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place bread crumbs into a bowl, and mix in the cream. Allow to stand until crumbs absorb the cream, about 10 minutes. While the bread is soaking, melt 1 teaspoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat, and cook and stir the onion until it turns light brown, about 10 minutes. Place onion into a mixing bowl; mix with ground beef, ground pork, egg, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Lightly mix in the bread crumbs and cream. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Pinch off about 1 1/2 tablespoon of the meat mixture per meatball, and form into balls. Place the meatballs into the skillet, and cook just until the outsides are brown, about 5 minutes, turning the meatballs often. Inside the meatballs will still be pink. Place browned meatballs into a baking dish, pour in chicken broth, and cover with foil. Bake in the preheated oven until the meatballs are tender, about 40 minutes. Remove meatballs to a serving dish. To make brown gravy, pour pan drippings into a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the flour into the pan drippings until smooth, and gradually whisk in enough beef broth to total about 2 1/2 cups of liquid. Bring the gravy to a simmer, whisking constantly until thick, about 5 minutes. Just before serving, whisk in the sour cream. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Serve the gravy with the meatballs.

Tori's Bean-less Chili 1/4 cup water (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes 2 large onions, diced 1 (26 ounce) can tomato soup 2 pounds ground beef 1 pound chorizo sausage, ground salt - ground black pepper to taste 2 (4 ounce) cans diced green chiles 1 tablespoon olive oil 3 tablespoons chili powder 4 bell peppers, seeded and diced 1 tablespoon adobo seasoning (rojo adobo) (optional) 4 cups V8 Bring water to a boil in a soup pot, reduce heat to low, and cook onions in the simmering water until translucent, 5 to 8 minutes. Add ground beef to onions; cook and stir until ground beef is browned and crumbly, about 10 more minutes. Sprinkle beef with salt and black pepper as it cooks. Drain excess grease. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat; cook and stir bell peppers in the hot oil until softened, about 5 minutes. Add peppers to meat mixture. Stir V8, tomatoes, tomato soup, sausage, chiles, chili powder, and adobo seasoning into mixture. Bring chili to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until thickened, about 30 minutes. Cover and continue simmering, about 20 minutes more.

TAMALE PIE CORNBREAD ½ cup cornmeal ⅔ cup flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 3-4 tablespoons oil

⅓ cup milk 1 egg (4.5 ounce) diced green chiles 1 can of corn or creamed corn MEAT 1 lb ground beef 1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon chili powder salt and pepper to taste TAMALE PIE 1 ¼ cup enchilada sauce 2 cups of shredded cheese

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add oil until soft crumbles form. Whisk in milk and egg. Gently fold in chiles and corn. Pour into greased baking pan. Bake until a toothpick should come out clean, 20-25 minutes. While cornbread is baking, combine beef with spices and sauté in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside. Once cornbread is done baking, reduce oven to 350 degree. Poke holes in cornbread with a fork and pour enchilada sauce over it. Top with ground beef and shredded cheese, and cover with aluminum foil. Bake in oven for 20 minutes. Remove foil and back until cheese begins to brown, about 5-10 minutes. Let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving with desired toppings.

7 Surprising Health Benefits of Turmeric: The Golden Spice That Heals You may know that turmeric is a common spice in many ethnic cuisines (it’s what gives Indian curries their bright, yellow color), but you may not know that this versatile south Asian botanical, Curcuma longa, has been revered for thousands of years for its medicinal properties. The Golden Yellow Root Turmeric comes from the roots of a perennial herbaceous plant related to the ginger family. Its beautiful gold-yellow color was first used to dye fabrics and today, while a widely known spice, it is used as a safe coloring for many food and beverages including cheese, popcorn, orange and lemon drinks, cakes, cereals, relishes, pickles, mustard, canned broths, gelatins, and more. It’s even added to various cooking oils to increase their shelf life because of turmeric’s antioxidant properties. Healing Powers Turmeric has been an integral part of oriental and Ayurvedic (“whole body”) medicine for centuries. More than 6,000 studies conducted on turmeric and its active component, curcumin, reveal that it has vast healing properties. Check out this list of 7 amazing health benefits of this spice: 1. Anti-inflammatory – Studies have shown that turmeric effectively reduces inflammation better than ibuprofen and aspirin, without adverse health risks. Understanding that inflammation is a precursor for most diseases in the body such as cancer, arthritis, and high cholesterol, makes turmeric the natural choice for reducing inflammation. Research supports turmeric’s effectiveness at relieving joint pain and inflammation associated with all types of arthritis. In fact, those who suffer from Lyme disease (which has symptoms that mimic arthritis) are often prescribed turmeric for relief. 2. Anti-Cancer – Curcumin and turmeric have been shown to fight colon cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia. There’s no risk of adverse side effects that drugs often pose. 3. Gut Healer – Taken in supplement form, turmeric supports the healing of stomach issues, bowel disease, and various digestive problems. 4. Improved Brain Function – Inflammation impacts the brain as much as it does the rest of the body. Turmeric improves brain function, reduces “brain fog,” and symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. 5. Anti-Depressant – Studies show that turmeric relieves stress, anxiety, and depression, helping us relax, improve mood, and achieve inner balance. Diffusing turmeric essential oil can help you unwind and reduce stress. 6. Liver Support – Turmeric cleanses and supports the health of our liver. It protects this vital, detoxifying organ against toxicity. 7. Cold Remedy – Turmeric boosts immune function, which is key when fighting a cold or other viral illness.

of money. You don't have to guess which companies are going to win certain government contracts or which new technology will win out, or anything like that.

We know with as much certainty as possible that Trump is going to quickly make a few key moves to unravel Obama's worst socialist policies... And we know there are very predictable outcomes from these moves. You see, Trump is about to destroy Obama's extremist environmental policies. For starters, get this: Trump's head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is Scott Pruitt, the former attorney general of the oil and gas-friendly state of Oklahoma.

There's a lot of uncertainty… People are confused about what's going to happen... and what they should be doing with their money now that Trump's in charge. In our special, free report, we will introduce you to the biggest undeveloped gold mine in the world. This mine is on U.S. soil. But it has been "off limits" for years thanks to the EPA. Under Trump, the light is going green... and early investors could make a killing. There's so much gold that if it is all mined, it will be worth more than $100 billion at today's prices.

As the Washington Post recently reported: "Pruitt has spent much of his energy as attorney general fighting the very agency he is being nominated to lead." Under Obama's watch, the EPA was hostile toward natural resource businesses... and it often has been considered to have overreached its legal powers. But now, with Trump in the White House, all of that could change. And you now have the chance to get in on the opportunity of a lifetime as Obama's extremist, environmental, provisions are unraveled. In this report, we will introduce you to the biggest undeveloped gold mine in the world. This mine is right here on U.S. soil. But it has been "off limits" for years thanks to the EPA. Under Trump, it could get the green light... and early investors are going to make a killing. Call Kim for your free report or to have a confidential account review … 865-376-4925

In introducing her, the emcee suggested that she explain her secret for raising five fine, industrious sons. The proud woman stood up and said, “The secret lies in an occasional pat on the back. It gets positive results if administered young enough, often enough, and low enough.”

5 Healthy Secrets About Spinach A few years ago, spinach, which enjoyed the spotlight for many decades as one of the healthiest vegetables around, got pushed aside as America went through a kale phase. Everything kale dominated the produce aisles and online recipe blogs — from chips to smoothies to salads. But even with all the clever ways to prepare it, many of us found that kale was just difficult to prepare and simply …. unpalatable (sorry, kale lovers!). So spinach is making somewhat of a comeback as people want a healthy leafy green that’s easy to prepare and tastes great. There’s no arguing that spinach is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s an excellent source of vitamin K, important for maintaining bone health, as well as an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and folic acid. It’s also a good source of manganese, magnesium, iron, potassium, and vitamins B2 and B6. A one-cup serving of raw spinach has only about 30 calories and 4 grams of fiber. And it’s known to restore energy and increase vitality, which is why depictions of Popeye, the beloved sailor man, when he needed strength to defeat his cartoon enemies in a jiffy, burst open a can of the stuff. But with all the ways to buy – canned, frozen, bagged, or fresh — which is the healthiest? What about cooked versus raw? Check out this list of “secrets” about spinach to help you answer those questions: 1. Fresh is best. The best way to benefit from spinach’s nutrients is to buy it fresh and eat it the same day. Frozen is a good choice, but if you use frozen spinach, simply let it thaw and use it in your recipe. There’s no need to cook it again (it’s been cooked once, before processing), which will reduce its level of folate, an important B vitamin for heart health. 2. Cooking or sautéing spinach increases its nutritional benefits. This is because spinach contains oxalic acid, an organic substance that can interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients like calcium and iron. When you eat spinach that has been cooked, your body absorbs higher levels of vitamins A and E, protein, fiber, zinc, thiamin, calcium, and iron. Important carotenoids, such as beta-carotene and lutein. But raw spinach is still a great choice, and you’ll actually get the benefit of more Vitamin C absorption when you eat it raw. 3. Pairing spinach with vitamin C increases absorption of iron. So try a spinach salad with Mandarin oranges or strawberries for not only a blast of flavor but even more nutritional benefits. 4. It’s good for digestive health. Spinach eases constipation and protects the mucus lining of the stomach, and flushes toxins from the colon. 5. Baby spinach is just as healthy as mature leaf spinach. Some people prefer the tender, baby spinach leaves for salads and reserve the larger, sturdier leaves for cooking. The good news is research shows they are both are high in nutrients. It’s best to cook and eat it right away.

Natural Ways to Soothe Sore Muscles

Feeling the after effects of working out at the gym, or planting all those beautiful flowers you couldn’t resist at the garden center? If so, try these natural ways to relieve sore muscles. Drink Water Your body utilizes water to repair and rebuild muscles. Water intake assists in flushing out toxins, hydrating your body, replenishing water in your muscles, and preventing or relieving muscle cramps, spasms and soreness. Drink water before and after exercising (or working in the garden) to keep hydrated and to reduce soreness. Moist Heat Therapy Heat increases the blood flow to joints and muscles, naturally easing soreness. Heat also increases the flow of oxygen to the muscles, which reduces the transmission of pain signals to the brain, and thus eliminates discomfort, while assisting in the healing process. So, why use moist heat instead of dry? Moist heat therapy has been found to effectively soothe and relieve soreness as it penetrates deep tissues and muscles faster than dry. Moist heat is also less apt to dehydrate your skin. The choice is yours: sit in a steam room, Jacuzzi, or visit a chiropractic office for direct moist heat therapy while reclining. For basic at-home treatments you can sit in a warm shower, apply a hot water bottle, a moist heat pack, or gel-lined mitt (available in drug stores) to the sore muscle for 15 minutes. Whichever treatment you choose, ensure that the heat is warm and soothing, and not uncomfortably hot. Epsom Salt Bath This natural home treatment combines the benefits of moist heat with magnesium sulfate, known to relieve sore muscles. Add one-half to 1 cup of Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate) to a tub of very warm, but not hot water. Sit back in the tub, relax and soak for about 15 minutes. Laser Therapy-(light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation) Laser technology first became popular in this country when it was used to heal injured race horses. This painless, highly effective treatment has since been FDA approved for use on humans and is widely used by professional athletes and sports teams for a variety of sports injuries. How does it work? Laser causes the body to take in oxygen faster, reducing toxins and swelling. It eliminates pain, increases mobility, and speeds the healing process. Laser therapy is available in many chiropractic and other health practices. Massage Massage relieves pain by increasing blood flow, enhancing circulation, eliminating toxins, and stimulating the lymph fluids, muscles, and tissues. Dancers and athletes utilize massage before intense physical performance as part of the warm-up regime, to reduce the chance of injury. Massage is a safer way to warm-up and to prevent soreness or injury than stretching. Massage at post-workout reduces the likelihood of inflammation and pain, accelerates muscle recovery, and reduces soreness. Whether you massage the muscle region yourself, use a hand-held massager, a foam roller, or get a professional massage, these methods can help relieve tension, and soothe sore muscles. Magnesium Oil, Rubs and Salve Fitness experts and natural health practitioners recommend rubbing (or spraying) magnesium oil directly into the skin to reduce overworked muscles. Its oil-like quality makes it the ideal massage oil when working to relieve achy joints, muscle spasms and soreness. Add drops of any one or a combination of these essential oils to your choice of massage oil to ease muscle soreness: clove, wintergreen leaf, peppermint oil, Helichrysum flower oil, or Osmanthus flower extract. Protein Protein provides the body with energy, helps build and repair muscle, and relieves soreness. After strenuous physical exertion, consume a healthy source of protein such as poultry, salmon, nuts, quinoa, eggs, or drink a protein shake to prevent or relieve sore muscles. Vitamin C Vitamin C and other antioxidants flush the muscles of lactic acid, assisting in the prevention and relief of sore muscles. Since vitamin C cannot be produced by the body, daily we should consume foods rich in vitamin C or take it in supplement form. Discuss appropriate vitamin C dosage with your health care provider. Excellent food sources of vitamin C include berries, citrus fruits, broccoli, asparagus, avocados, sweet peppers, pineapple, cantaloupe, collards, kale, mustard and turnip greens, mangoes, strawberries, tomatoes and radishes. Sources of herbs containing vitamin C include alfalfa, cayenne, chickweed, fenugreek, kelp, peppermint, mullein, paprika, parsley, raspberry leaf, red clover, rose hips and yarrow.

What does the Bible say about “Snow”? Numbers 12:10 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. 2 Samuel 23:20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lion-like men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow: 2 Kings 5:27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow. 1 Chronicles 11:22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lion-like men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day. Job 6:16 Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid: Job 9:30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean; Job 24:19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned. Job 37:6 For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength. Job 38:22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, Psalms 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

February

by: Clara Miles February is the shortest month, of the year. We must remember, that spring is drawing near. Things are not the way they always appear, now that Jesus, is always here. He is here, to answer, our prayers. As long as we believe him, around the clock, for 24 hours. For He is a rewarder, to those that diligently seek Him. We must, seek his face. Where there will be, no disgrace. We need to read our Bible. Where there will be a revival.

Gods Love

by: Susan Stout God’s love is unconditional, what can I say? It is with you night and day. You say, I am a sinner. My God can make you a winner. He is the way, the truth and the light Please let Him make things right. On Him your troubles lay. Your sorrows He will take away.

The Victory is the Lord's by: Gary Spreacker

1 Chronicles 29:11; Psalm 98:1 Can we make too much of our Lord: His greatness, His pow'r and glory? Could we speak too much of His Word: His majesty and victory? All in heav'n and earth are the Lord's. He is exalted above all. How could we exhaust love's strong cords: 'Tis His grace that saves from the fall? With His right hand and holy arm Our Lord hath done marvelous things. Now, all our foes have been disarmed. O, sing of Him, The King of Kings. Now thanks be unto Christ Jesus For vict'ry over all our sin. 'The Battle is the Lord's' for us: We're more than conquerors in Him!

Nascars New Stage-based Race Format NASCAR, in collaboration with industry stakeholders, announced today an enhanced competition format that will be implemented in all three of its national series -- the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR XFINITY Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Increasing the sense of urgency and emphasizing aggressive racing and strategy, the race format will deliver more dramatic moments over the course of an entire race and season, with playoff point incentives on the line throughout. The enhanced format consists of the following: • Races will now consist of three stages, with championship implications in each stage. • The top-10 finishers of the first two stages will be awarded additional championship points. • The winner of the first two stages of each race will receive one playoff point, and the race winner will receive five playoff points. Each playoff point will be added to his or her reset total following race No. 26, if that competitor makes the playoffs. • All playoff points will carry through to the end of the third round of the playoffs (Round of 8), with the Championship 4 racing straight-up at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the title. • Championship points following the first two stages will be awarded on a descending scale, with the stage winner receiving 10 points, second receiving 9 points, and so on. • The race winner following the final stage will now receive 40 points, second-place will receive 35, third-place 34, fourth-place 33, and so on. "Simply put, this will make our great racing even better," said Brian France, NASCAR Chairman and CEO. "I’m proud of the unprecedented collaboration from our industry stakeholders, each of whom had a common goal -- strengthening the sport for our fans. This is an enhancement fully rooted in teamwork, and the result will be an even better product every single week." NASCAR also announced a playoff bonus structure that will see the regular season points leader honored as the regular season champion, earning 15 playoff points that will be added to the driver’s playoff reset of 2,000. In addition, the top-10 drivers in points leading into the playoffs will receive playoff points, with second place receiving 10 playoff points, third place will earn 8 points, fourth place will receive 7 points, and so on. All playoff points will carry through to the end of the Round of 8. "These are enhancements that the NASCAR fan has long sought, and the entire industry has worked hard to develop a better racing format for our fans," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "This format puts a premium on every victory and every in-race position over the course of the season. Each point can eventually result in winning or losing a championship."

THE PHANTOM (Can You Find Me¿)

Find this place and WIN a years subscription to The Roane Reader Go to www.roanereader.com/thephantom PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR NAME, ADDRESS, EMAIL(optional) and PHONE NUMBER. ANSWERS MUST BE VERY SPECIFIC!! Keep reading for her additional comments and an explanation. When discussing Obama, she says: Entries that fail to provide all this information will not qualify! 1. Obama destroyed the Clinton Political Machine, driving a stake through the heart of Hillary's presidential aspirations -something no Republican was ever able to do. One 82-year-old lady loves Obama and she may have a very good point. She says that Obama is amazing, and is rebuilding the American dream! She gives us an entirely new slant on the "amazing" job Obama is doing, and she says that she will thank God for the President.

2. Obama killed off the Kennedy Dynasty - no more Kennedys trolling Washington looking for booze and women wanting rides home. 3. Obama is destroying the Democratic Party before our eyes! Dennis Moore had never lost a race. Evan Bayh had never lost a race. Byron Dorgan had never lost a race. Harry Reid - soon to be GONE! These are just a handful of the Democrats whose political careers Obama has destroyed. By the end of 2016, dozens more will be gone. Just think, in December of 2008 the Democrats were on the rise. In two election cycles, they had picked up 14 Senate seats and 52 House seats. The press was touting the death of the Conservative Movement and the Republican Party. However, in just one term, Obama put a stop to all of this and gave the House and the Senate - back to the Republicans. 4. Obama has completely exposed liberals and progressives for what they are. Sadly, every generation seems to need to re-learn the lesson on why they should never actually put liberals in charge. Obama is bringing home the lesson very well: Liberals tax, borrow and spend. Liberals won't bring themselves to protect America. Liberals want to take over the economy Liberals think they know what is best for everyone. Liberals are not happy until they are running YOUR life. 5. Obama has brought more Americans back to conservatism than anyone since Reagan. In one term, he has rejuvenated the Conservative Movement and brought out to the streets millions of freedom loving Americans. Name one other time when you saw your friends and neighbors this interested in taking back America! 6. Obama, with his "amazing leadership," has sparked the greatest period of sales of firearms and ammunition this country has seen. Law abiding citizens have rallied and have provided a "stimulus" to the sporting goods field while other industries have failed, faded, or moved off-shore. 7. In all honesty, 4 years ago I was more afraid than I have been in my life. Not afraid of the economy, but afraid of the direction our country was going. I thought, Americans have forgotten what this country is all about. My neighbors and friends, even strangers, have proved to me that my lack of confidence in the greatness and wisdom of the American people has been flat wrong. 8. When the American people wake up, no smooth talking teleprompter reader can fool them! Barack Obama has served to wake up these great Americans! Again, I want to say: "Thank you, Barack Obama!" After all, this is exactly the kind of hope and change we desperately needed!! 9. He has saved Carter’s legacy and made Jimmy Carter happy since Jimmy is no longer the worst president we've ever had. Credit goes to where credit is due. I feel better now! THANK YOU OBAMA

Lessons Learned By Seniors

1. The most important person in your life is the person who agreed to share their life with you. Treat them as such. 2. You might live a long life, or you might live a short one — who knows. But either way, trust me when I say that you’re going to wish you took better care of yourself in your youth. 3. Stuff is just stuff. Don’t hold onto material objects, hold onto time and experiences instead. 4. Jealousy destroys relationships. Trust your significant other, because who else are you supposed to trust? 5. People always say, ’’Make sure you get a job doing what you love!’’ But that isn’t the best advice. The right job is the job you love some days, can tolerate most days, and still pays the bills. Almost nobody has a job they love every day. 6. If you’re getting overwhelmed by life, just return to the immediate present moment and savor all that is beautiful and comforting. Take a deep breath, relax. 7. Years go by in the blink of an eye. Don’t marry young. Live your life. Go places. Do things. If you have the means or not. Pack a bag and go wherever you can afford to go. While you have no dependents, don’t buy stuff. Any stuff. See the world. Look through travel magazines and pick a spot. GO! 8. Don’t take life so seriously. Even if things seem dark and hopeless, try to laugh at how ridiculous life is. 9. A true friend will come running if you call them at 2am. Everyone else is just an acquaintance. 10. Children grow up way too fast. Make the most of the time you have with them. 11. Nobody ever dies wishing they had worked more. Work hard, but don’t prioritize work over family, friends, or even yourself. 12. Eat and exercise like you’re a diabetic heart patient with a stroke — so you never actually become one. 13. Maybe this one isn’t as profound as the others, but I think it’s important… Floss regularly, dental problems are awful. 14. Don’t take anyone else’s advice as gospel. You can ask for advice from someone you respect, then take your situation into consideration and make your own decision. Essentially, take your own advice is my advice… 15. The joints you damage today will get their revenge later. Even if you think they’ve recovered completely. TRUST ME! 16. We have one time on this earth. Don’t wake up and realize that you are 60 years old and haven’t done the things you dreamed about. 17. Appreciate the small things and to be present in the moment. What do I mean? Well, it seems today like younger people are all about immediate gratification. Instead, why not appreciate every small moment? We don’t get to stay on this crazy, wonderful planet forever and the greatest pleasure can be found in the most mundane of activities. Instead of sending a text, pick up the phone and call someone. Call your mother, have a conversation about nothing in particular. Those are the moments to hold onto. 18. Pay your bills and stay the hell out of debt. If I could have paid myself all the money I’ve paid out in interest over the years, I’d be retired already. 19. If you have a dream of being or doing something that seems impossible, try for it anyway. It will only become more impossible as you age and become responsible for other people. 20. When you meet someone for the first time, stop and realize that you really know nothing about them. You see race, gender, age, clothes. Forget it all. You know nothing. Those biased assumptions that pop into your head because of the way your brain likes categories, are limiting your life, and other’s lives. 19. If you have a dream of being or doing something that seems impossible, try for it anyway. It will only become more impossible as you age and become responsible for other people. 20. Do you get "brain freeze" when you're eating ice cream? Cold on the roof of your mouth causes pain in the temples and eye sockets. The cure? Drink a glass of warm water.

Happy Birthday

A Fourteenth Letter to America

by: Manuel Ybarra, Jr The year 2017 gives America a chance for change. We have gone astray and so has the world. We must try to return to God and seek His righteous guidance. That guidance is in God’s Word, The Word of God. It has not and will not change. The Pilgrims on the Mayflower knew His Word and their pact was to Glorify God in their new endeavor. They considered America, like a second promise land, given to Man by God. And they were probably well acquainted with God’s command to Joshua, “to be strong and very courageous,” and “to observe to do according to all the laws.” Joshua was also instructed by God not to turn to the right, nor to the left, from His Laws. But for several decades, America has been turning right and left, like on a mountain road. God’s Commandments are no longer followed by judges in their decisions. They have forgotten that it is the Righteous Judge, The Creator, our God, who determines what is right and wrong. The only rights a person has is what God has given Man. Do good and what is right, and don’t do bad and what is evil in His sight. It is sad America is still going away from God. At a time that America has a terrible drug problem costing many lives, several states have approved recreational pot smoking. Instead of seeking God and putting God first, let them blow their minds, seems to be the message from voters. America is definitely spiritually blind. Probably under condemnation from God as some are saying. “Thou shall not kill,” says God. And, “Thou shall not have any other God.” Email: mybarrajr77@outlook.com

TOO LATE

A man boarded the sleeper train in New York late one evening and said to the porter, as he prepared to retire, “I have an important engagement in Syracuse in the morning and must get off there. I am a very hard man to awaken, but I am going to give you this $50 bill. You see that I get off in Syracuse.” Some time later, the man awakened and discovered that the Sun was shining. He called the porter and asked, “Where are we now?” Said the porter: “We’ll be getting in to Buffalo in a short time.” The traveler burst out in an angry protest to the porter, using words that do not ordinarily appear in print. The train conductor overheard the conversation and called the porter. He said, “You are expected to be courteous to people on the train, but you don’t have to stand for conversation of that kind.” The porter replied, “If you think that was bad, you should have heard the man I put off in Syracuse!”

If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how will anyone ever know?

Stumbling Around

Back in Old England, two gentlemen were walking down the street when one stumbled over a mop bucket that had been left out. “My dear friend,” said the other, “I lament your death exceedingly, you have just kicked the bucket.” “Not so,” rejoined the first. “I have only turned a little pail.”

RIP and Facebook

Please read this before you post another RIP on social media. There is a hierarchy of grief. Grieving in the technology age is uncharted territory. I’ll take you back to Saturday, June 9, 2012. At 8:20 a.m., my 36-year-old husband was pronounced dead at a hospital just outside Washington, D.C. By 9:20 a.m., my cellphone would not stop ringing or text-alerting me long enough for me to make the necessary calls that I needed to make: people like immediate family, primary-care doctors to discuss death certificates and autopsies, funeral homes to discuss picking him up, and so on. Real things, important things, time-sensitive, urgent things. At 9:47 a.m., while speaking to a police officer (because yes, when your spouse dies, you must be questioned by the police immediately), one call did make it through. I didn’t recognize the number. But in those moments, I knew I should break my normal rule and answer all calls. “He’s dead??? Oh my God. Who’s with you? Are you OK? Why am I reading this on Facebook? Taya, what the heck is going on?” Facebook? I was confused. I hadn’t been on Facebook since the day before, so I certainly hadn’t taken the time in the last 90 minutes to peek at the site. “I’ll call you back”, I screamed and hung up. I called my best friend and asked her to search for anything someone might have written and to contact them immediately and demand they delete it. I still hadn’t spoken to his best friend, or his god-sister, or our godchild’s parents, or a million other people! Why would someone post it to Facebook SO FAST? While I can in no way speak for the entire planet, I certainly feel qualified to propose some suggestions — or, dare I say, rules — for social media grieving. How many RIPs have you seen floating through your social media stream over the last month? Probably a few. Death is a fate that we will each meet at some point. The Information Age has changed the ways in which we live and communicate daily, yet there are still large voids in universally accepted norms. This next statement is something that is impossible to understand unless you’ve been through it: There is a hierarchy of grief. Yes, a hierarchy. It’s something people either don’t understand or understand but don’t want to think or talk about — yet we must. There is a hierarchy of grief. Hierarchy is defined as: a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority, and an arrangement or classification of things according to relative importance or inclusiveness. This magical button delivers up-worthy stories to you on Facebook: What does this mean as it relates to grief? Let me explain. When someone dies — whether suddenly or after a prolonged illness, via natural causes or an unnatural fate, a young person in their prime or an elderly person with more memories behind them than ahead — there is one universal truth : The ripples of people who are affected is vast and, at times, largely unknown to all other parties. A death is always a gut punch with varying degrees of force and a reminder of our own mortality. Most people are moved to express their love for the deceased by showing their support to the family and friends left behind. In the days before social media, these expressions came in the form of phone calls, voicemail messages, and floral deliveries. If you were lucky enough to be in close proximity to the family of the newly deceased, there were visits that came wrapped with hugs and tears, and deliveries

of food and beverages to feed all the weary souls. Insert social media. All of those courtesies still occur, but there is a new layer of grief expression — the online tribute in the form of Facebook posts, Instagram photo collages, and short tweets. What’s the problem with that? Shouldn’t people be allowed to express their love, care, concern, support, and prayers for the soul of the recently deceased and for their family? Yes, and no. Why? Because there are no established “rules,” and people have adopted their own. This isn’t breaking news, and you’re not trying to scoop TMZ. Listen, I know you’re hurt. Guess what? Me too. I know you’re shocked. Guess what? Me too. Your social media is an extension of who you are. I get it. You “need” to express your pain, acknowledge your relationship with the deceased, and pray for the family. Yes, however..Please give us a minute. We are shocked. We are heartbroken. Give the immediate family or circle a little time to handle the immediate and time-sensitive “business” related to death. In the minutes and early hours after someone passes away, social media is most likely the last thing on their minds. And even if it does cross their mind, my earlier statement comes into play here. There is a hierarchy of grief. Please pause and consider your role and relationship to the newly deceased. Remember, hierarchy refers to your status and your relative importance to the deceased. I caution you to wait and then wait a little longer before posting anything. This may seem trivial, silly, and not worth talking about, but I promise you it isn’t. If the person is married, let the spouse post first. If the person is “young” and single, let the partner, parents, or siblings post first. If the person is “old” and single, let the children post first. If you can’t identify the family/inner circle of the person, you probably shouldn’t be posting at all. Do you get where I’m going with this? In theory, we should never compare grief levels, cast the grief-stricken survivors into roles, or use words like status and importance. But maybe we need to at this moment (and for the next few weeks and months). The “RIP” posts started hitting my time-line about an hour after my husband’s death, and I certainly didn’t start them. This created a sense of confusion, fear, anxiety, panic, dread, and shock for the people who knew me, too. What’s wrong? Who are we praying for? Did something happen? Did someone pass? Why are there RIPs on your wall and I can’t reach you? Call me please! What’s going on? That’s a small sample of messages on my voicemail and text inbox. I had to take a minute in the midst of it all to ask a friend to post a status to my Facebook page on my behalf. Your love and expressions of support are appreciated and needed, but they can also be ill-timed and create unintended additional stress. The person is no less dead and your sympathy no less heartfelt if your post, photo, or tweet is delayed by a few hours. Honestly, the first couple of hours are shocking, and many things are a blur. Most bereaved people will be able to truly appreciate your love, concern, prayers, and gestures after the first 24 hours. I’ve learned this from the inside — twice within the last four years. And I assure you that if we each adopted a little patience and restraint in this area, we would help those who are in the darkest hours of their lives by not adding an unnecessary layer of stress.

Nipper -

Who Was He?

Nipper (1884–1895) was a dog who served as the model for a painting titled His Master's Voice. This image was the basis for the dog-and-gramophone logo used by several audio recording and associated brands Nipper was born in 1884 in Bristol, England, and died in September 1895. He was a mixed-breed dog and probably part Jack Russell Terrier, although some sources suggest that he was a Smooth Fox Terrier, or "part Bull Terrier". He was named Nipper because he would bite the backs of visitors' legs. Nipper originally lived with his owner, Mark Henry Barraud, in the Prince's Theatre where Barraud was a scenery designer. When Barraud died in 1887, his brothers Philip and Francis took care of the dog. Nipper himself died of natural causes in 1895 and was buried in Kingston upon Thames in Clarence Street, in a small park surrounded by magnolia trees. As time progressed the area was built upon, and a branch of Lloyds Bank now occupies the site. On the wall of the bank, just inside the entrance, a brass plaque commemorates the terrier that lies beneath the building

What A Grandmother Is: According to some first graders who were asked:) A grandmother is a lady who has no children of her own, so she likes other people's little girls. A Grandfather is a man grandmother. He goes for walks with the boys, and they talk about fishing and tractors and like that. Grandmas don't have to do anything except be there. They're old, so they shouldn't play hard or run. It is enough if they drive us to market where the pretend horse is and have lots of dimes ready. Or if they take us for walks, they should slow down past pretty leaves and caterpillars. They should never, ever say "Hurry Up". Usually they are fat, but not too fat to tie kids' shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear. They can take off their teeth and gums. They don't have to be smart, only answer questions like why dogs hate cats and how come God isn't married. They don't talk baby talk like visitors do, because it is hard to understand. When they read to us they don't skip or mind if it is the same story again. Everybody should try to have one, especially if you don't have television, because grandmas are the only grownups who have got time.

Who invented the mailbox and when?

First, some background. In the early 1800's, most letters in the U.S. were taken to the post office to be mailed, and recipients had to retrieve their mail from the post office. It wasn't until 1863 that mail was delivered to homes of people who lived in cities without additional charge. By 1890, hundreds of cities delivered mail to residents' homes, thus leading to a need for mailboxes. While not the earliest, in 1892, George E. Becket, of Providence, R.I., was granted a patent for his "house-door letter-box," an improved mail slot that was permanently mounted on the front door of a house. The first letter box (where the public could leave its letters) sanctioned by the United States Postal Service was patented on March 9, 1858 by Albert Potts. His design incorporated the lampposts that his company made with a letter box. His receptacle was rather small and required frequent emptying. It was not the first in history, however; that honor goes to Renouard De Valayer. In 1653, he set up a short-lived postal system using collection boxes on street corners around Paris.

Peroxide Cures What?! Hydrogen peroxide — known to most of us from the dark brown bottles in our bathroom, medicine cabinets — is a naturally occurring substance made up of two parts hydrogen and two parts oxygen. (H2 O2). Found in rainwater and snow, hydrogen peroxide is a natural disinfectant that helps to keep lakes and streams healthy and clean. Because it is an unstable compound, hydrogen peroxide eventually casts off one of its oxygen molecules, breaking down into plain water, or H20. In nature, hydrogen peroxide is usually found diluted in water, and is both harmless and beneficial. In its purest form, created in labs, though, it becomes a volatile substance that is even used by NASA as a component in rocket fuel! The peroxide we buy in stores is only about 3% H2 O2, diluted in water. Why is the bottle brown? The brown bottles keep the light from breaking it down into pure water. While many of us grew up cleaning out our cuts and scrapes with hydrogen peroxide, for the last several years, medical professionals, including those at the Mayo Clinic, have cautioned against its use. Though hydrogen peroxide is effective at killing off harmful bacteria, it can also kill the healthy new cells our bodies produce during healing. That doesn’t mean you need to toss those brown bottles in the trash, though. Hydrogen peroxide still has many handy uses: – Revive your plants: As hydrogen peroxide breaks down, it releases oxygen that can help a plant’s root development, reverse root rot, and even deter pests. Mix 1 oz. hydrogen peroxide into 1 quart of water for regular watering and misting. – Starting seeds: Soak seeds overnight in a solution of 1 oz. hydrogen peroxide and 1 pint of water. – Deodorizer: As hydrogen peroxide oxidizes (breaks down) it can also help to break down natural odors, such as fish or rotten food, more quickly. Mix it with baking soda and place it in areas, such as refrigerators or dishwashing machines, where odors have accumulated. De-Skunk: To remove skunk spray odor from skin, fur, or fabric, mix 1

Home Remedies Activated Charcoal absorbs toxins in the body (i.e. from taking a lot of medicine). If you have a ruptured appendix, putting activated charcoal on the outside of skin absorbs it. Activated Charcoal is also great if you have high cholesterol. Charcoal breaks down snake venom in half so that it's no longer toxic and your body can absorb snake poison harmlessly. You may also grind activated charcoal, red potato and flax seed oil together for a better remedy (place it in a rag and put the rag next to your skin, to prevent it from staining your skin).

quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a few drops of grease-cutting liquid dish soap. Work into the affected area, rinse, and reapply as needed. – Emetic: If your dog swallows something harmful, like chocolate, you can induce vomiting by having them drink a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the peroxide must be a 3% solution or less; 1 teaspoon per every 5 lbs., not mixed with food or drink. – Kitchen cleaner: Keep a spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the kitchen to clean and disinfect counter tops, cutting boards, utensils, and appliances. – Facial cleanser: Hydrogen peroxide can reduce facial oils and even treat mild acne. Rub a peroxide-soaked cotton ball over the face after washing with normal soap. Be careful to keep the peroxide out of your eyes and eyebrows. – Fruit and vegetable cleaner: Spray fruits and vegetables with hydrogen peroxide. Let them stand for a few minutes, then rinse and dry, to battle e-coli and other bacterial invaders. – Toothpaste: Make natural toothpaste from baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Add peroxide to the baking soda until it sticks together as a paste, then brush as normal. Peroxide dissolves plaque, promotes healthy gums, whitens teeth, and can eliminate bad breath. – Oral rinse: To treat canker sores, injured gums, and other mouth wounds, rinse with hydrogen peroxide twice daily. – Laundry and stain removal: Add one cup of peroxide to your laundry instead of bleach. For tough organic stains, such as blood, wine or grass, pour peroxide directly onto the stain before it sets in, then wash as normal. Be careful, though, Peroxide can bleach out colors. – Remove ear wax: Use an eyedropper to place a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into your ear canal twice a day for two days. On the third day, gently squirt warm water into your ear canal, using a rubber-bulb syringe, to flush out the wax. If the wax remains, repeat the process over another three-day period.

“Little River” - Chapter 14 by: Rachel Holbrook

“Caleb?” At the sound of Megan’s voice calling to him, Caleb swiped an arm across his eyes, before turning to scan the trees for his friend. When she called his name again, he finally spotted her, picking a careful path down the wooded hillside. He had been sitting on the tracks with his back to her, but now stood facing her. He shoved his hands awkwardly in his worn out jeans’ pockets. Megan finally emerged from the trees. He thought she looked pretty in her jean shorts and aqua blue t-shirt. When she saw his eyes, red and swollen, she asked, “What’s wrong?” “Nothing,” he replied, looking at the ground. “Don’t be embarrassed.” Megan’s eyes sought his. “I’m not embarrassed,” Caleb mumbled. Megan shrugged her thin shoulders, and repeated, “What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” Megan sighed the universal sigh of frustration of women whose men are less than forthcoming about their emotions. She changed tactics, and asked instead, “What are you doing out here by yourself?” “I just wanted to be alone.” Caleb shrugged. “It’s quiet out here.” “Do you want me to leave?” Megan asked, offended. “No.” Caleb was quick to answer, not wanting her to leave at all. After a moment of Megan silently watching him, he asked, “What are you doing out here by yourself?” “Looking for you.” Megan answered, sitting down on the rail. “How did you know I was out here?” Caleb sat down beside of her. “I saw your bike in the bushes.” “Oh.” Caleb picked up one of the small gravels around the shining rail and rolled it between his fingers. “Is something wrong at home?” Megan tried again. “Depends on what home you mean.” Caleb tossed the rock into the woods with the same motion he used to skip a rock across the lake. “At your uncle’s?” “Everything is fine there.” “At your brothers’?” “Who knows, really?” Caleb didn’t try to keep the bitterness from his voice. He was tired of trying to have a good attitude. “I’ve not even heard from Clay or Josh since me and Trav moved in with Uncle Titus.” “I’m sorry,” Megan said softly. Once she got Caleb talking, words poured out of him like a dam suddenly burst. “I rode my bike over there twice this week, and they’re never home. They’re always working, or out with their girlfriends. Uncle Titus said he called a few times, but they never answered. I miss my brothers.” Caleb’s voice trembled, but he went on. “We always fought a lot growing up, and they were mean sometimes…a lot of the times…but they’re my brothers. We always had each other. And now, even Travis is always out till late. He got a job at the grocery store. I never see any of my brothers anymore!” Caleb’s voice cracked, and he abruptly stopped talking. Megan reached over and took his hand in hers. She didn’t say anything ; instead, she just tilted her head a bit to let him know she was still listening. Caleb cleared his throat and fought the tears that were threatening to spill down his cheeks again. He glanced away from Megan, and said, “I really miss Mama, too.” “I know.” Megan squeezed his hand. “I miss my parents a lot.” “Are you close with your parents?” Caleb asked, realizing he knew very little about Megan’s family life. “Not really.” Megan shook her head. “But we were always together until this summer. It’s just so weird being here with Papaw and only talking to them a couple times a week.”

“I’ve not talked to my mom even once since she went to the hospital.” Caleb said, his voice barely more than a whisper. “She’s been at my grandparents’ house for almost a month now, and she’s not called me a single time.” “Why not?” Caleb shrugged. “Things get hard for my mom. She’s never been very good at taking care of us. Not since Daddy died, at least. I think she had a nervous breakdown or something. “ “That sucks.” Megan leaned her head on his shoulder. “Yeah.” Caleb nodded. “If Uncle Titus didn’t spend so much time helping her and doing stuff for her…taking care of us boys…we probably would have gone to foster care. There was a social worker for a while—when we were younger.” “Titus is kind of your guardian angel, huh?” Caleb smiled. “I’ve never thought of him like that, but, yeah, I guess he is.” He sighed, and added, “That’s why I feel so bad about how his life is going lately. He’s always been there to take care of us…and Mama…and now he’s stuck with us for good, and Jamie left him because of it.” “That’s not your fault.” Megan protested. “It feels like it is. And I feel bad about it. He’s so sad all the time now, and I wish I could do something to help.” “Will your mom ever come home?” Megan asked. “I don’t think so.” Caleb’s eyes filled with tears, and he didn’t even care anymore. “I heard Uncle Titus talking on the phone last night. I don’t know who he was talking to, but he was saying stuff about going to court to be our permanent guardian and I think he was talking about moving. He was talking about selling a house. I couldn’t figure out if he was talking about his house or our house…Mama’s house.” “Do you want to leave Little River?” “I don’t know.” Caleb turned his hand over so he was holding her hand in his. “I can’t imagine not living in Little River. It’s all I know.” They sat companionably together until Caleb’s stomach rumbled loudly. He blushed when Megan laughed at him. “I’m starving.” Caleb grinned at her. “Want to go to my house and make some sandwiches?” “Sure.” The two made their way up the hill and out of the woods, picking up Caleb’s bike when they emerged. As they walked, Caleb pushing his bicycle, Megan told him about staying with her Papaw and how much she hated the evenings when he fell asleep in his recliner watching T.V., and she was left bored and lonely for the rest of the night. “I know the feeling. I was always used to a lot of people around all the time until lately, now it’s…” Caleb’s voice trailed off as they approached Titus’ house. His mouth hung open, his words dying on his tongue as he surveyed the damage before him. Toilet paper hung from the trees, beer bottles were smashed to pieces on the front porch steps, and a inappropriate word was spray-painted in red across the front door. “Little River” is an ongoing serial which debuted on 6-30-15. New installments will be published every month in The Roane Reader. If you enjoy this serial you can purchase “Little River” Vol. 1 from Amazon in paperback or as a Kindle book for easy reading on your e-reader devices. Rachel Holbrook writes from her home in East Tennessee, where she lives with her husband and six children. She is currently seeking representation for her first novel.

Subject: Little old lady George the preacher, in his Sunday sermon, used "Forgive Your Enemies" as his subject. After a long sermon, he asked how many were willing to forgive their enemies. About half held up their hands. Not satisfied he ranted and raved for another twenty minutes and repeated his question. This time he received a response of about 80 percent. Still dissatisfied, he lectured for another 15 minutes and repeated his question. With all thoughts now on Sunday dinner, all responded except one elderly lady in the rear. "Mrs. Jones, why are you not willing to forgive your enemies?" "I don't have any." "Mrs. Jones, that is very unusual. How old are you?" "Ninety-three." "Mrs. Jones, please come down in front and tell the congregation how a person can live to be ninety-three, and not have an enemy in the world." The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, very slowly turned around and said: "It's easy ... I just outlived them all ...

What Causes a Dull Coat on your dog? Ask most vets what causes a dull coat and they’re likely to answer “poor nutrition.” So the first thing you want to do is make sure you’re feeding your four-legged friend a healthy diet full of real meat and protein, with few if any by-products, preservatives, and grains like corn, wheat, and soy, which can cause allergies. There are also certain medical problems that can affect a dog’s appearance, so a dull coat may be a good reason for a checkup. Parasites like tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms can all deplete your dog of key nutrients important for coat health. Infections, fleas and ticks, thyroid problems, kidney conditions, and other health issues can also be to blame, so make sure your dog has a clean bill of health. Natural Ways to Encourage a Shiny Coat 1. Once you know that your dog is in tip-top shape, here are some other things you can do to encourage his or her coat to come out shiny and soft. 2. Tuna, sardines, and salmon: These are full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids that help contribute to a healthy coat, plus they’re delicious to a dog! Add some to the dog’s food. 3. Brush regularly: Regular brushing stimulates the skin and hair follicles, which increases the natural production of skin oils that make the coat shiny. Brush your dog at least once every other day. 4. Bathe regularly, but not too much: How often depends on your dog, the length of the coat, and how dirty he or she gets. Bathing once a month is a good general guideline—often enough to keep the coat clean, but not so often that you’re stripping the coat of essential oils. Use a moisturizing shampoo that won’t irritate skin. Consider adding a natural conditioner afterwards—those that contain vitamin E are soothing to the skin and hair. Some owners use coconut milk on the pet’s fur for several minutes before bath time. 5. A little oil: Stir one teaspoon to one tablespoon of vegetable oil into your dog’s food to keep the coat healthy. Try sunflower, flaxseed, olive, coconut, and safflower, but don’t give them too much—that can lead to diarrhea. Coconut oil may also help clear up skin conditions. 6. Herbal remedies: Try horsetail, as it’s high in silica, which is essential in the maintenance of healthy and strong skin, bones, and fur. Spirulina is another natural ingredient that contains protein, B vitamins, and carotenoids. Be cautious, though, not to use too much. Check with your vet on dosage. 7. Protection: Dogs who have no shelter from the elements and are kept outside most days will have coats that change to be more thick and dry simply to provide natural protection. You can just let it be for the colder winter months, or provide additional shelter to encourage a shinier coat. 8. Oatmeal Bath: Dogs with dull coats often have skin problems, as well. An oatmeal bath helps sooth the skin, tame itching, and leaves the coat soft and shiny. Oatmeal contains vitamin E, so it works as a natural softener. Simply grind one-cup plain oatmeal into a fine powder, fill a tub with lukewarm water, add the powder and stir in until the water appears cloudy, then place your dog in the bath. Pour water on its back and head, avoiding the eyes, and massage for 10-15 minutes. Rinse and pat dry.

The Clever Dachshund

1. Thoroughly clean the toilet. 2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water. 3. Obtain the cat and carry him to the bathroom. 4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape). CAUTION: Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching out for anything he can find. 5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power wash and rinse" which I have found to be quite effective. 6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door. 7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids. 8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself. Sincerely, The DOG

A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet dachshund along for company. One day, the dachshund starts chasing butterflies and before long the dachshund discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having him for lunch. The dachshund thinks, "OK, I’m in deep trouble now!" Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dachshund exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here." Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees. "Whew," says the leopard. "That was close. That dachshund nearly had me." Meanwhile, a monkey, who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the dachshund saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here monkey, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine." Now the dachshund sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks, "What am I going to do now?" But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet … and, just when they get close enough to hear, the dachshund says… "Where’s that darn monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard."

When an animal tries to lick a person's face or mouth, it is looking for sugar or salt that humans have in their skin. There is no affection involved - as many people wrongly assume.

Animal behavior has long been linked to weather. The thickness of their coats, amount of body fat, where they hide their food caches, and how they build their winter dens have all been used to predict winter weather. Native Americans looked to the beaver for clues about winter. They believed that the larger and stronger the beaver lodge, the harsher the winter to come.
