Precious Memories

By: Kay Christopher I Wasn’t My Mama’s Best Friend

Nowadays, I hear women say their teenage daughter is their best friend. I think to myself, sister, you need to be a mother, not a friend. My Mama wasn’t my friend, and I didn’t want her to be. I had friends my own age, and mama had friends her age. That’s how it’s supposed to be. What if the daughter does something bad? Does someone’s best friend spank them? Does her best friend discipline her? “Honey, we can’t go to the Aerosmith Concert tonight because I’m going to have to ground you.” Give me a break! These mama’s need to get a backbone (and a new friend) and let their daughter pick her own friends. Also, your daughter is not telling you everything, like you tell a real friend. She’s not going to tell you all her secrets or yearnings. So Mama, realize that you’re not the best thing that ever happened to your daughter. Her life does not revolve around you. Get a friend your age, one that will understand you and one who doesn’t expect you to give them everything under the sun. My Mama was my mother. She was mature and had her own life. I also had 5 brothers and sisters. She was not a best friend to any of us. We didn’t tell her everything we did, nor did we tell on each other. She didn’t just spank us, she whooped us. Mama was too busy raising kids than to illusion herself to the fact that she must hang out with one of her children because it’s her best friend. Baloney.

Why does hair turn gray?

Armed Forces Day in the United States Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. Armed Forces Day is also part of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May. What Do People Do? Many events across the United States take place on Armed Forces Day to honor Americans in uniform who served their country in times of war and peace. Those who are honored on this day include people who serve the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. National Guard and Reserve units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/Week over any period in May because of their unique training schedules. Events and activities may include: Multi-service military displays in areas open for the public. Various educational activities that teach children about the armed forces. “Support the Troops” themed motorcycle rides. Large parades and other local celebrations. Certain types of music are also played at Armed Forces Day events, including at memorials and at cemeteries, as a way to respect those in the armed forces who died for their country. For example, buglers have played a bugle call, known simply as Taps, on Armed Forces Day in recent years. Taps is usually sounded by the United States military at events such as flag ceremonies, memorial services and funerals. Public Life Traffic and parking may be affected in areas where large-scale events are held for Armed Forces Day. Background On August 31, 1949, Louis Johnson, who was the United States’ Secretary of Defense, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the armed forces’ unification under one department – the Department of Defense. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day too. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950. The theme for that day was “Teamed for Defense”, which expressed the unification of all military forces under one government department. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the day was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job was performed and the role of the military in civilian life. Armed Forces Day was a day for the military to show "state-of-the-art" equipment to Americans. It was also a day to honor and acknowledge Americans in the armed forces. Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held at the inaugural Armed Forces Day. Armed Forces Day is still celebrated nationwide today and is part of Armed Forces Week. Symbols Posters and other material used to promote Armed Forces Day often show images of Americans in the armed services dressed in their uniforms. Some posters show a collage of images, including images of those in the armed forces with their families or friends, as well as the United States Flag.

Gold Medal Runner

Enjoy That Chocolate

Michael Johnson, the Olympic gold medal runner, was on his way to a club with some friends. At the door, the bouncer turned to him and said: “Sorry, mate, you can’t come in here – no denim”. Michael was quite annoyed at this and retorted: “Don’t you know who I am? I’m Michael Johnson”. “Then it won’t take you long to run home and change, will it?” replied the bouncer.

There are more reasons to enjoy chocolate, according to science. But not just any chocolate; it has to be dark chocolate, especially the kind that has 70% or higher cocoa levels. You'll have healthier skin Eating the antioxidant-rich chocolate leads to skin that's smoother, less dried out, and more resistant to sunburn. You'll have healthier teeth Sugar in chocolate candies rots your teeth, but cocoa actually protects them. Cocoa bean husks contain antibacterial compounds that help stop plaque and bacteria. It'll reduce your cravings and weight gain Cocoa is rich in fiber and protein. even smelling dark chocolate stimulates an anti-hunger hormone. You'll have a healthier heart A third of the fat in cocoa butter is stearic acid, which your liver converts to a healthy mono-unsaturated fat called oleic acid, that actually lowers your bad cholesterol and boosts your good HDL. You'll have sharper focus Chocolate boosts blood circulation to the brain, which can improve your ability to focus. You'll have less anxiety Studies show chocolate decreased levels of cortisol. It'll give you a more effective workout Chocolate helps boost your pre-exercise energy levels, power through a hard sweat session and cut down on post-workout soreness thanks to 2 kinds of antioxidants.

Woodstock...Who's gone and who's still around? (Part 1) Nearly fifty years have come and gone since 30 bands and artists were part of rock history at the original Woodstock festival. For some, careers were launched. For others, it was just another gig (albeit with an audience of half a million.) Some are gone, some have faded into history, and some are alive, well, and still making music. Joan Baez Prior to Woodstock, her music strongly reflected her opposition to the Viet Nam war and her passion for the protection of human rights. Since Woodstock, she has expanded her activism to include the environment, the death penalty, gay and lesbian rights, poverty, and the Iraq war. Her most recent album, Day After Tomorrow was released in 2008, and she continues to maintain a heavy tour schedule. The Band Guitarist Robbie Robertson rarely performs in public (the last time was at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival in 2007) but has done considerable work in films, as a producer, performer/composer. Drummer Levon Helm won a Grammy for his 2007 album, Dirt Farmer and toured with his own band until his death from cancer in 2012. Keyboardist Garth Hudson performs with his band, The Best! and is a session player.

Bassist/vocalist Rick Danko died in 1999 after years of painkillers and alcohol due to chronic pain from a 1968 car crash. Keyboardist Richard Manuel committed suicide in 1986 after a long struggle with substance abuse. Blood Sweat & Tears Lead singer Steve Katz is the only current member of the band who was in the lineup that performed at Woodstock. David Clayton-Thomas, lead singer in 1969, left the band in 1972, but returned for two more stints, the longest running from 1984-2004. He continues to tour as a solo act. Drummer Bobby Colomby currently owns a talent management company in Los Angeles. Bassist Jim Fielder has had a successful career as a session musician and is now a member of Neil Sedaka's backing band. Multi-instrumentalist Dick Halligan composes and performs jazz and chamber music. Saxophonist Fred Lipsius teaches at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Trumpeter Lew Soloff plays with the Manhattan Jazz Quintet. Butterfield Blues Band It was just a few months after Woodstock that the Butterfield Blues Band disbanded. Founder Paul Butterfield did solo and session work until his death in 1987 at the age of 44 of a heart

attack attributed to years of drug and alcohol abuse. Saxophonist David Sanborn has had a highly successful career as a performer and composer. He released a new studio album, Only Everything, in 2010 and maintains a busy tour schedule. Guitarist Buzz Feiten joined The Rascals, and is now a solo and session player. Canned Heat Band co-founders Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson and Bob "The Bear" Hite died in 1970 and 1981, respectively. Drummer "Fito" de la Parra still performs with the band regularly. Guitarist Harvey "The Snake" Mandel and bassist Larry "The Mole" Taylor left in 1970 to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Mandel, Taylor and de la Parra are in the current lineup of Canned Heat, which was touring internationally in 2016. Joe Cocker Cocker has continued to tour and record virtually non-stop since Woodstock. His 21st studio album, Hard Knocks was released in 2010; in 2016 he is still touring. Country Joe and The Fish Lead vocalist "Country Joe" McDonald embarked on a solo career after his group disbanded in 1971. He and other original Woodstock performers toured in the summer of 2009 as Heroes of Woodstock. Guitarist Barry "The Fish" Melton has been a practicing attorney since the late '80s, currently working as a public defender in California. He also tours with his own band, The Dinosaurs. Creedence Clearwater Revival After CCR broke up in 1972, brothers John (lead vocalist-guitarist-songwriter) and

Tom (guitarist) Fogerty each pursued solo careers. Tom died of AIDS in 1990. John is still actively recording and touring. He released The Blue Ridge Rangers Ride Again in 2009. Bassist Stu Cook and drummer Cosmo Clifford formed Creedence Clearwater Revisited in 1995. They are still active with the group, performing the old CCR catalog. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Neil Young had just joined up with Graham Nash, Stephen Stills and David Crosby when they performed at Woodstock -their first public performance. Both configurations (CSN and CSNY) continue to perform together. Young continues a long and successful solo career; his favorably reviewed autobiography and several biographies and books about his music are available on Amazon. Grateful Dead Two members of the Woodstock lineup have died: keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan in 1973 and guitarist/vocalist Jerry Garcia, whose death in 1995 marked the end of the band's three decade run. Bob Weir (guitar), Phil Lesh (bass), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Mickey Hart (drums) and Tom Constanten (keyboards) have each pursued solo careers, and have performed together in various combinations off and on since 1998. Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann and Hart have toured in recent years as The Dead. Constanten toured with other original Woodstock performers as Heroes of Woodstock. Arlo Guthrie In addition to continuing to write and perform songs about social injustice, Guthrie has

appeared in films and on television, produced concerts, and written a children's book. His 28th album, Tales of '69 was released in 2009. He continues to tour, often with his son, Abe. Keef Hartley Castle U.S. Between 1969 and 1975 Hartley released nine albums before dropping off the radar until his autobiography was released in 2007. He left the music industry and opened a cabinet-making business. He had replaced Ringo Starr as drummer for Rory Storm and The Hurricanes when Ringo signed on with The Beatles. Hartley died in 2011 at the age of 67. Tim Hardin In the four years following Woodstock, Hardin released four albums, none of which did particularly well. In spite of being booked at Woodstock, he was better known as a songwriter (Rod Stewart's "Reason To Believe" and the often covered "If I Were A Carpenter") than as a performer. During the '70s he split his time between the U.S. and the U.K. and became increasingly hooked on hard drugs. In 1980, he died of an overdose of heroin and morphine at the age of 39. Richie Havens Woodstock transformed Havens from a Greenwich Village favorite to an international star. Since then, he hasn't stopped working, releasing 23 albums, most recently Nobody Left To Crown in 2008. He continued to tour, and in August 2009 performed at the site of the original Woodstock stage for the festival's 40th anniversary. Havens died at age 71 in 2013. ....... Continued next month

Keep your knives sharp

Having sharp knives is not only safer (your knife is less likely to slip off a vegetable and into your finger), but it just makes cooking so much more pleasurable when you can fly through your slicing, dicing, and chopping tasks. For most home cooks, sharpening should be done once or twice a year. If you're up for the task, you can get yourself some stones and do it yourself, though most folks will opt to take their knives to a professional. Whatever you do, don't use those 3/28/2017 9:43:29 PM awful electric grinding machines which will strip off far more metal than is necessary.

WHAT IS GARDENING BY THE MOON? Gardening by the Moon is a great way to help plan your above and below ground crops. Here’s how it works: Plant annual flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground during the light, or waxing, of the Moon: from the day the Moon is new to the day it is full. Plant flowering bulbs, biennial and perennial flowers, and vegetables that bear crops below ground during the dark, or waning, of the Moon: from the day after it is full to the day before it is new again. Old-time farmers swear that this practice results in larger, tastier harvest.

What Does It Mean When You Hear Mayday?

Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! It's the call that no airplane pilot or ship's captain ever wants to have to make. Why? Because it means trouble. Big trouble! It's the word used around the world to make a distress call via radio communications. Mayday signals a life threatening emergency, by a ship or a plane, although it may be used in a variety of other situations. Procedure calls for the mayday distress signal to be said three times in a row — Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!—so that it won't be mistaken for another word or phrase that sounds similar under noisy conditions. A typical distress call will start with mayday repeated three times, followed by all relevant information that potential rescuers would need, including type and identity of craft involved, nature of the emergency, location or last known location, current weather, fuel remaining, what type of help is needed and number of people in danger. Mayday got its start as an international distress call in 1923. It was made official in 1948. It was the idea of Frederick Mockford, who was a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. He came up with the idea for “mayday" because it sounded like the French word m'aider, which means “help me." Sometimes a mayday distress call is sent by one vessel on behalf of another vessel in danger. This is known as a mayday relay. A mayday relay is sometimes necessary if the vessel in danger loses radio communications. If a mayday call is repeated and not acknowledged, another vessel hearing the call may attempt to relay it again and again until help is reached. A mayday call is not something to be taken lightly. In the United States, it's illegal to make a fake distress call. Doing so can land you in jail for up to six years and subject you to a $250,000 fine! For situations that are less than life-threatening, one of several other urgent messages can be conveyed. For example, “Pan-Pan" — from the French word panne, which means “breakdown" — can be used to signal an urgent situation involving a mechanical or medical issue. Another signal is “Securite"—from the French word sécurité, which means “safety." Securite is often used to convey a message about safety, such as bad weather or navigation hazards. These phrases are usually repeated three times to avoid confusion.

The Wright Sister

Science gets a grip on wrinkly fingers Spontaneous reflex may have evolved to improve handling of wet objects. Scientists think that they have the answer to why the skin on human fingers and toes shrivels up like an old prune when we soak in the bath. Laboratory tests confirmed a theory that wrinkly fingers improve our grip on wet or submerged objects, working to channel away the water like the rain treads in car tires. People often assume that wrinkling is the result of water passing into the outer layer of the skin and making it swell up. But researchers have known since the 1930s that the effect does not occur when there is nerve damage in the fingers. This points to the change being an involuntary reaction by the body's autonomic nervous system — the system that also controls breathing, heart rate and perspiration. In fact, the distinctive wrinkling is caused by blood vessels constricting below the skin. In 2011, Mark Changizi, an evolutionary neurobiologist at 2AI Labs in Boise, Idaho, and his colleagues, suggested that wrinkling, being an active process, must have an evolutionary function. The team also showed that the pattern of wrinkling appeared to be optimized for providing a drainage network that improved grip. But until now, there was no proof that wrinkly fingers did in fact offer an advantage. In the latest study, participants picked up wet or dry objects including marbles of different sizes with normal hands or with fingers wrinkled after soaking in warm water for 30 minutes. The subjects were faster at picking up wet marbles with wrinkled fingers than with dry ones, but wrinkles made no difference for moving dry objects. The results are published today in Biology Letters. "We have shown that wrinkled fingers give a better grip in wet conditions — it could be working like treads on your car tires, which allow more of the tyre to be in contact with the road and gives you a better grip," says Tom Smulders, an evolutionary biologist at Newcastle University, UK, and a co-author of the paper, Hold tight Wrinkled fingers could have helped our ancestors to gather food from wet vegetation or streams, Smulders adds. The analogous effect in the toes could help us to get a better footing in the rain. Changizi says that the results provide behavioral evidence "that pruney fingers are rain treads", which are consistent with his own team's morphological findings. What remains to be done, he adds, is to check that similar wrinkling occurs in other animals for which it would provide the same advantages. "At this point we just don't know who has them, besides us and macaques.” Given that wrinkles confer an advantage with wet objects but apparently no disadvantage with dry ones, it's not clear why our fingers are not permanently wrinkled, says Smulders. But he has some ideas. “Our initial thoughts are that this could diminish the sensitivity in our fingertips or could increase the risk of damage through catching on objects."

When you think of airplanes, you may think of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Their early experiments led to the first manned airplane flight 100 years ago. There's another member of the Wright family, however, who also played an important role in the airplane industry. Katharine Wright isn't as well known as her brothers, but her work helped make Wilbur and Orville the most famous names in aviation. Katharine was born on Orville's third birthday: August 18, 1874, in Dayton, Ohio. Her mother died when she was 15 years old, and that led to Kate, as her friends called her, taking on many household responsibilities while she was still very young. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1898, she became a schoolteacher and taught Latin and English. During those same years, Wilbur and Orville began experimenting with flying. Kate was eager to help. She brought some of her teacher friends down to the test area to help with some of the projects. Some stories say that Kate calculated many of the flight formulas, and that she designed and sewed the fabric wing covers. Other accounts say those are legends that make the story sound more appealing but aren't accurate. In the early 1900s, women's accomplishments were often downplayed, which makes it hard for historians to separate fact from fiction. In 1908, Orville had a serious accident while demonstrating a military airplane. He suffered broken hips, ribs, a sprained back, and a concussion. Kate left her job as a teacher to care for her brother. Part of the care meant that she took over business operations in Washington while Orville recovered and Wilbur was in France promoting another airplane. Once Orville was feeling better, all three Wrights traveled across America to spread the word about airplanes. Kate was a corporate officer for The Wright Company, America's first aircraft manufacturing firm. Orville and Wilbur were shy and uncomfortable making speeches and meeting business partners, so Kate became the company spokesperson as well. She soon became famous for showing how safe airplanes could be. If televisions had existed in the early 1900s, you would have seen Kate on The Wright Company commercials, urging Americans to take a flight on the newest sensation: airplanes. She had an energetic personality and enjoyed sharing her brothers' message. One of her slogans about airplane safety was, 'If a woman can do it, it must surely be safe!' One observer described her as 'someone with coal black hair, deep blue eyes, and a smile that could blind you.' Kate died of pneumonia on March 3, 1929. After her death, the National Aeronautic Association created the Katharine Wright Memorial Award. Every year, it's presented to women playing an influential role in U.S. space and aviation.

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant or other treats to their mother and mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers. Many schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their mothers. Public Life Mother's Day is not a federal holiday. Organizations, businesses and stores are open or closed, just as they are on any other Sunday in the year. Public transit systems run to their normal Sunday schedules. Restaurants may be busier than usual, as some people take their mothers out for a treat. Many people send cards or gifts to their mother or mother figure or make a special effort to visit her. Common Mother's Day gifts are flowers, chocolate, candy, clothing, jewelry and treats, such as a beauty treatment or trip to a spa. Some families organize an outing for all of their members or hold a special meal at home or in a restaurant. In the days and weeks before Mother's Day, many schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their mothers. Background The origins of Mother's Day are attributed to different people. Many believe that two women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis were important in establishing the tradition of Mother's Day in the U.S.. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers. Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother's Day to be celebrated each year to encourage pacifism and disarmament amongst women. It continued to be held in Boston for about ten years under her sponsorship, but died out after that. In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother's Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. Ann Jarvis had organized "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to improve health and cleanliness in the area where she lived. Anna Jarvis launched a quest for Mother's Day to be more widely recognized. Her campaign was later financially supported by John Wanamaker, a clothing merchant from Philadelphia. In 1908, she was instrumental in arranging a service in the Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which was attended by 407 children and their mothers. The church has now become the International Mother's Day Shrine. It is a tribute to all mothers and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Mother's Day has become a day that focuses on generally recognizing mothers' and mother figures' roles. Mother's Day has also become an increasingly important event for businesses in recent years. This is particularly true of restaurants and businesses manufacturing and selling cards and gift items.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes

Household Hints Cutting thin cheese slices Use a potato peeler! Picking up broken glass Broken glass is not only dangerous but tricky to clean up. Luckily, you can simplify the task by using a slice of bread. It'll sweep up even the tiniest pieces of glass. Hanging a spoon on the edge of the pot Wrap an elastic band around the spoon handle and you'll never have to worry about it falling in again. Remove corn from the cob Stand the corn up in a Bundt pan, and use a sharp knife to remove the kernels of corn swiftly and easily - and with no mess to boot. Opening jars Stretch a rubber band around the outside of the lid and you'll find that they come off like magic. Measure precise ingredient amounts Use a piece of tape stuck over the top of the container to scrape off the excess and measure the perfect amount of powdered ingredients every time. Defrost meat on aluminum trays The fastest way to defrost meat is under a cold running tap. But if you want to save water and speed things up a bit, place your meat on an aluminum sheet tray or skillet. Aluminum is a great conductor of heat and will draw energy from the surrounding environment into your frozen meat much faster than a wooden cutting board or wood or stone countertop. You can cut defrosting times down by about 30 percent this way. It also works on soups, stews, and anything frozen flat. Keep your cutting board in place. Put a wet paper towel underneath your board to keep it from sliding around all over the place. Light candle wicks that are out of reach If you don't have long safety matches at hand to light those half-burnt candles, dry, uncooked spaghetti works pretty well too. Cleaning bottles Sometimes, it's hard to find a brush that's the right size to clean a certain bottle properly. Here's a great trick: use crushed up egg shells. Sprinkle them into the bottle with soapy water, cap it up, and give it a good shake. The shells help clean the dirt from the inner walls, after which you just rinse it right out.

Penny Pinchers Using leftover sauce You made a yummy pasta dinner, but you've got a bunch of sauce left. Just freeze it in an ice cube tray and it's ready for you to use the next time you cook. Bake at 325 degrees F until leaves are dry and brittle. Let them cool. Crumble leaves, and store in an airtight container. Sprinkle them on soup, stew or casseroles as a delicate flavor enhancer.

Trump's "Secret Plan" for the Use of Marijuana Tax Revenue?

• This Could Make States Billions of Dollars Every Year! • While Offsetting Ridiculous Obama Healthcare Spending... • And Potentially Turn a Few Informed Investors Into "Marijuana Millionaires" in as Little as a Few Weeks Bob Tonachio • Believe it or not…Marijuana could be one of the keys to bailing the U.S. out of historic debt. And while the GOP casts aspersions at the failed Obama healthcare law… President Trump may already be way ahead all of them! Something could happen soon that will not only generate much needed tax revenue for all states who get involved…But could also make some public stockholders very rich during this 2017 “Green Rush”… Listen…We all know Trump’s a serious and very smart businessman. And he’ll NEVER walk away from a good deal. So when sources like CNBC cite that the pot markets are worth as much as $120 Billion… Which is more valuable tax wise and health wise…. than beer or cigarettes… Do you really think Trump can ignore ALL that potential tax money? Especially when the states are hurting and want more tax revenue! Budgets are tightening up…and states are looking for more ways to tax the public… like the tax on fuel for citizen’s cars and trucks! And now we’re stuck with Obamacare draining us for the foreseeable future. Of course Trump won’t sit still… He’s too smart! The Washington Post reported on pro-marijuana comments he’s made: “Marijuana is such a big thing.” And… “I think that should be a state issue, state-by-state.” That’s why I think Donald Trump has a top-secret plan. Sure, maybe you’ve heard a few

administration members have been skeptical on pot. But as I’ll show you in one second… As soon as Trump implements his secret plan, it will shut up all pot pessimists…This could even expedite more total state legalizations nationwide…And make up for the billions of dollars we waste on foolish programs each year. But as great as this is… I’m not telling you this to get you excited about tax savings. Instead, I want to show YOU how to potentially profit on this. Because if Trump leaves marijuana decisions up to the states, it can ignite a wealth boom for this already massive $120 Billion pot market like no one alive has ever dreamed of before… And it's going to cause a handful of small marijuana companies to experience what I'm calling " Pot stock surges"...In short, these surges can catapult their stock prices up 20, 40, sometimes over 50 times their current price. Just look at these incredible examples: • 4,900% gain on HEMP in 23 days • LXRP jumped 1,120% • EAPH jumped 4,631% • ERBB jumped 3,327% • CBGI jumped 5,100% And now that eight more states are on board, the publicly traded “penny pot stocks” should skyrocket in price.

Unearthed in the Andes Mountains, these mysterious crystals contain what MIT researchers call energy’s “Holy Grail.” And they could ignite a $7.2 trillion economic revolution! “The new gasoline.” - Goldman Sachs But that may very well be the understatement of the century. You see, Oro Blanco is 1,693-times more powerful than the gasoline that runs your car. Which is why Goldman Sachs is predicting it will eventually “replace gasoline as the primary source of transportation fuel.” I’d like for you to imagine: • Pulling into your local gas station on empty • Putting only a single gallon of this superfuel in your tank • And driving 42,325 miles before having to stop at that same gas station again. D’ Fre M Different countries celebrate Mother's Day at different times. For example, the United Kingdom celebrates it on the fourth Sunday of Lent, Norway on the second Sunday of February, and Egypt the first day of Spring. The Philippines and Japan celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. Various forms of Mother's Day have been celebrated by different societies throughout the history of the world. The official holiday in the United States, however, began with a lady named Ann Jarvis in 1868. Ann tried to establish a Mother's Friendship Day after the Civil War. She wasn't successful during her lifetime, however her daughter Anna Marie Jarvis began to work on a Mother's Day holiday after Ann died. In 1910 Anna Marie got the state of West Virginia to declare Mother's Day an official holiday. The rest of the nation soon followed and in 1914 it was declared a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson. Since then Mother's Day has become one of the most popular holidays of the year.

Funny Fishing A man was stopped by a game-warden in Northern Algonquin Park recently with two buckets of fish leaving a lake well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, “Do you have a license to catch those fish?” The man replied to the game warden, “No, sir. These are my pet fish.” “Pet fish?!” the warden replied. “Yes, sir. Every night I take these here fish down to the lake and let them swim around for a while. I whistle and they jump back into their buckets, and I take em home.” “That’s a bunch of crap! Fish can’t do that!” replied the warden in disbelief. The man looked at the game warden for a moment, and then said, “Here, I ll show you. It really works.” “O.K. I’ve GOT to see this!” The game warden was curious. The man poured the fish in to the river and stood and waited… After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, “Well?” “Well, what?” the man responded. “When are you going to call them back?” the game warden prompted. “Call who back?” the man asked. “The FISH,” the warden said sternly. “What fish?” the man asked.

I never make the same mistake twice. I make it five or six times, just to be sure.

The Internet......What’s that?

“C’mon Ma you have got to try it” I pleaded to my elderly Mother. I don’t know how my Mother lasted this long without ever using the internet, but enough was enough! I thought. “Ok” she said reluctantly settling down by the computer and slowly putting on her reading glasses “what do I do now?” “Now I’m going to open the home page of google”, I explained. “OK here it is! Now type in ANY question you want into the bar over here and you will find an answer to your question.” I confidently assured her. My Mother looked at me warily, thought for a second, and slowly began to type, How is Gertrude doing this morning?

Don’t Touch That Mailbox!

Federal property is any property owned, leased, or otherwise managed by the federal government. When a mailbox is put into use for the purposes of sending and receiving mail, it becomes federal property. The government agency responsible for managing mailbox property is the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The USPS delivers mail to residences and businesses. Mailbox Tampering Mailbox tampering is considered any act that interferes with another person's letter box or other receptacle. This can include: destruction of the mailbox itself, theft of mailbox contents, the placement of items in a mail receptacle by persons other than postal employees, or any action intended to obstruct or damage mail or mailbox property. In short, anyone other than mail recipients and postal employees should not touch a mailbox or its contents. Federal Law - Title 18, Section 1705 There are several laws governing mail and mailbox property. Title 18 of the U.S. Code covers crimes and criminal procedure. According to Section 1705 of Title 18, "Whoever willfully or maliciously injures, tears down or destroys any letter box or other receptacle intended or used for the receipt or delivery of mail on any mail route, or breaks open the same or willfully or maliciously injures, defaces or destroys any mail deposited therein, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both." This means that violators can serve a prison sentence up to three years for each act of vandalism. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service notes that a fine of $250,000 can be levied. Federal Law - Title 18, Section 1708 Section 1708 of Title 18 describes the penalties for possessing stolen postal property such as mail. This section imposes a greater jail sentence on violators. From the U.S. Code: "Whoever buys, receives, or conceals, or unlawfully has in his possession, any letter, postal card, package, bag, or mail, or any article or thing contained therein, which has been so stolen, taken, embezzled, or abstracted, as herein described, knowing the same to have been stolen, taken, embezzled, or abstracted...Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

Hidden Corners By: Kayla Christopher

I just returned from my twenty-eight day solo Europe and UK vacation. I have been asked several times, “How did you afford this?,” “How were your hostels?,” and “Do you have any recommendations for me?” I have decided to write a few articles outlining topics like my budget and hostels for people that want to travel, but feel as if it is too expensive. I, a young, female, recent college graduate am proof that anyone can travel. Here is how I did it. Once I began to tell people how much my trip actually cost they reacted with, “that’s all?!” I then realized that many people are just assuming international travel is expensive when in reality it can be equal if not less than travel in the US if you know how to do it. I documented each dollar (euro, pound, and czeck crowns) I spent to prove that travel does not have to be expensive. I could have even done this trip with less money, but I chose to try to do adventures and eat good food so I splurged more than a traveler on a budget normally would. In addition to what you see above, my round trip flight to Amsterdam cost me $670. I recommend watching flights months in advance to see if the prices drop, and buy on a Tuesday (cheapest day to purchase a flight). Do not assume you have to fly into your destination. It is often cheaper to book to one country, and book a separate smaller flight from there to your final destination. I also spent $90 on travel insurance, which I highly recommend. I did not have to use it, but I’ve met many travelers that have. In total I spent less than $2500 on this entire trip. I spent the most on lodging because I wanted to make my hostels part

www.roanereader.com

of my adventure; you can find cheaper accommodations. I did a lot of museums, a Tour of Tuscany ($80), and things like the Eiffel Tower that has entry costs. Side note; always try to use your student ID for cheaper entry. Homes away from Home One thing I learned very quickly when I was traveling is if you do not like your hostel, it will really affect how you feel about the city overall. Picking the right hostel is extremely important. I wrote a short review of each hostel I stayed at for people who are planning on traveling soon. The list is from my favorite, to my least. Cliffs of Moher: The Burren Hostel This hostel is a beautiful, large historic home. It is over 200 years old featuring a wood burning fire place, a pool table, and a bar. I absolutely loved this hostel, and it is just a short bus ride to the Cliffs. I was the only person staying in this hostel, but that only made me love it more. The breakfast was free and fulfilling. The staff was very helpful, nice, and I truly enjoyed his company. The only thing I would debate if I was traveling back here would be possibly staying in Doolin since it would not require a bus ride to the cliffs, rather just a hike. Prague: Art Hole This hostel was awesome. The walls were covered in paintings, and each floor had its own large living room and kitchen. The breakfast was free, and typical. The location was perfect, very close to the main train station. This hostel was also very cheap so I will 100% stay here again if I travel back to Prague. Amsterdam: Flying Pig This hostel is not for someone who doesn’t want to meet people. All of the staff here was awesome, but definitely partiers. The breakfast was free and tasted good. The patio area was my favorite part of this hostel, but it does come with a smoking room, bar, and pool table as well with nightly events. I met the most people at this hostel. The only thing I would consider next time I return would be staying at the Uptown location

email: info@roanereader.com

rather than downtown just because it was closer to everything I specifically wanted to do. However, this is in the center of downtown so there’s a lot to do right around the hostel, and I just walked to Uptown. Florence: Archi Rossi This hostel was beautiful; there are statues everywhere. I loved the outdoor patio area, and the breakfast here was my favorite out of any hostel. It is right in the center; I would only stay here if traveling to Florence. Barcelona: St. Christopher’s Inn This hostel is right next to the main square in Barcelona. If you book direct, you get free breakfast, which was very delicious. This hostel has a great restaurant with a bar, and activity room for drinking games and meeting people. The rooms were very clean, and had balconies. I would stay here again. Venice: Generator This hostel was a lot of fun. They host nightly events with a DJ, which helps to meet people though my goal in Venice was to be alone most of the time to relax. I didn’t stay on the main island, I stayed on Guidecca, but I definitely preferred it this way. The hostel is right on the water, and though the food was lacking and the rooms were small I definitely loved it here. Very nice staff as well. The breakfast was decent, but free. Rome: Alessandro Palace I liked the rooms at this hostel because they were spacious with their own bathrooms, but I did encounter Wi-Fi and locker issues, which were quickly addressed by the friendly staff. I wouldn’t have a reason to not stay here again, but I might look into another hostel, also. It is within walking distance (less than an hour’s walk) to all major attractions, but it did not have free breakfast. London: Palmer’s Lodge This hostel was okay. The rooms were small, but each had their own bathroom. The free breakfast was good. The location was very far from anything I wanted to do so I had to rely heavily on public transportation. The front desk was not

17 The Roane Reader

very helpful, and laundry services were 8 euros which is way overpriced. Paris: St. Christopher’s Inn The breakfast here was not good, and it was not free. I would recommend getting a croissant for one euro. I liked that this hostel was on a canal, but the location overall was pretty far from everything I wanted to do. Granted, Paris is huge so to see everything you will have to take the Subway, but next time I go I will be staying closer to shopping and more food options. They do offer complimentary hair dryers, and there is a bar/ restaurant but it is not good enough to make me want to stay here again. Vienna: Do Step Inn I was not notified that this hostel would be under construction while I was staying. My room was very hot, and smelled like paint. The kitchen was nice, but no free breakfast. The location is good, right across from the main train station and next to a nice market, but the hostel was rundown (may be fixed with construction). Dublin: Abraham’s Hostel This was by far the worst hostel I stayed in. The only decent thing was the free breakfast. For a room of sixteen people, there was only one shower. The location was fine, just over the bridge from the main area of town. When you arrive after traveling all day, you are handed your sheets to make your own bed. The staff was very rude and not helpful. When I asked for recommendations of things to do, they just handed me a map and never said anything. The cleaning staff decided to strip my bed the second day because I was told “they had to guess which bed checked out” even though I had my belongings laying on it. They moved my stuff, and when I told the front desk, they wouldn’t even ask the cleaning staff where they moved it. I eventually found my belongings, but then I had to remake my bed! Not once did anyone ever apologize for any of this.

The Roane Reader proudly presents On Mother’s Day

My All and All by: Pinky White

I don’t know about tomorrow, what may come or what may go, All I know is He is my savior and He loves me so. Sometimes I may not understand, all that life may bring, but what I really know is Jesus is my King. When life falls to pieces and it seems all things go wrong, that’s when I remember that Jesus is my song. When life seems to come so hard, and things I can’t afford, I just stop and praise Him, because Jesus is my Lord. And when I take time to pray and on His name I call, I just remember, He is my all in all.

Words of Wisdom by: Elsie Wyrick

How many of you all read, or have read God’s Holy Words (The Bible). From the book of Genesis to the end of Revelation God is teaching and warning us all what will come upon this earth before the rapture of His born again children. It seems like there is so many of His true teachers and preachers are turned into His word and are trying to get people to listen and get ready for what’s coming upon us all. His word’s has touched my heart. Please let them touch yours too.

THE WRITER'S PAGE The Power of Deity

Psa. 107:29 by: Katie Bailey Randolph Such grandeur to see the arm of God In the midst of a raging storm; To stand in awe of His great power And not in fears alarm. His lightening flashes from clouds to earth, His wind bends the tallest tree. His thunders roar as a mighty voice Shouting His Deity. That mighty voice now so soft and low As He whispers, "Peace be still"; Lightening ceases, thunder decreases And the winds obey His will. I bow my head and say, "Thank you, Lord For showing Thy power to me... My Creator, my God, my Coming King, O Blessed Sovereighty!"

Safe In The Storm

Psa. 46:1 - 46:11 by: Katie Bailey Randolph God gives us the gift of discernment To keep us when the Tempter comes, to lure our hearts from Jesus And bring dishonor to God's only Son. So many times I cry out "Lord, Why?" He simply says, "be still my child, and know that I am God. I'll keep your feet from falling where others already have trod. I'll hold your hand throughout the storm until the winds are calm... Then give you grace and peace and joy To continue to walk with thy God."

I'm Just A Brand Plucked From The Fire Zechariah 3: 1-5 by: Gary Spreacker

I'm just a brand plucked from the fire; One the Lord reached down to free. Filthy garments were my attire When the Lord Jesus called me. Satan was there to accuse me. If he only told what's true, What hope for this sinner would be, But that the Lord paid my due? I'm just a brand plucked from the fire. Sov'reign grace has made me free. Gave to me His righteous attire; Now, no condemnation be! 'Tis the Lord's doing for His sheep. He has washed them white as snow. From Satan's fiery darts He keeps. The Lord said it and 'tis so! I'm just a brand plucked from the fire; Nothing to offer the Lord. He did all the work that's required; Salvation is through His Word. By Himself He put away sin; Clothed us with His righteousness. We are standing complete in Him; He's our Savior, our Fullness.

God’s Miracles

My Book of Books

by: Judy Reid

by: Judy Reid

His miracles are everywhere The beauty of His love From nature’s pictures painted deep To blue skies up above From children’s smiles and mother’s prayers And fathers daily bread The things we see, the things we don’t The future up ahead All tie together on this plan Which god has made for all But the greatest miracle ensues When we hear and heed His call Let us reach out our hearts toward God in heaven. Lamentations 3:41

There is a Bible by my bed That’s comforting each time it’s read It’s therapy when I feel lost Advice that comes without a cost This Holy book tells what to do When I feel all alone and blue It is a road map every day That one should follow all the way There is full instructions on each page That never change with the age It’s written plain and all is true That tells exactly what to do It is the Book of Books for sure The one that opens up the door Into eternal life I’m told Where no one ever shall grow old.

A Seventeenth Letter to America

by: Manuel Ybarra, Jr Two separate events shows how unbelieving of God’s Word, Mankind has become. Both used the-time-figure 165 million years. The first showed NASA’s gold plated satellite dish that supposedly will go into space and be able to go back some 165 million years into the evolution of the universe. At least, that’s “Man’s” foolish goal! The second was a newspaper announcement of a coming circus event “where you can experience firsthand the giants of today’s world” (elephants) “and enormous creatures from the past” (dinosaurs). That supposedly takes you back 165 million years to the Mesozoic Era, when they say dinosaurs roamed the earth. Problem with that Mesozoic Era time period, and others, is that a human being assigned each layer of rock the time they were formed, and completely ignored the Creator who was there and formed it. God, the Creator, spoke it into being, out of invisible particles, called atoms, and held together by His Word. According to “The Word of God,” time started only a few thousand years ago. God declared the first earthly day after He lit up the Sun, creating night and day, because of the earth’s 24-hour rotation. God invented time. At that time Earth was uninhabitable, fully covered by water, and THERE WAS NO LIFE! On the subsequent five days God caused land to rise, creating dry land, created all forms of vegetation, trees, and other things to sustain life. From the dust of the earth He formed all animals and Man and gave them life, including the infamous dinosaurs (probably the behemoth referred to by God in Job 40:15-19). God made Dinosaurs and Man on the 6th day of creation. Now Man questions the existence of God, with “words without knowledge” (Job 38:2). The truth is in God’s Word, not Man. Why do we get thirsty? People get thirsty because they are losing more water than they are drinking. You feel thirsty because the thirst receptors in your throat dry up which send a message to your brain telling you you need a drink. What is the best thing to drink when you are thirsty?...Water!

Things to d0 at a sleepover

Those who want to pull a prank at a sleepover but don't want to seem mean or bullying might want to focus on pranks that affect the whole group rather than singling out one person. Switch Clothes This prank requires someone to stay awake after everyone else has fallen asleep. Then, the prankster can take items out of people's bags and put them in other people's bags; this will create confusion in the morning. Midnight Makeover This prank also requires someone being awake while others are asleep. The prankster can apply makeup like nail polish and lipstick and laugh at the effects in the morning. Theme Prank Tell one or two of the people you invite that the party will be a costume party. They will show up looking silly, which is a funny prank for any party, not just a slumber party. Spooky Visitors It can be fun to introduce a spooky mood at a slumber party by arranging a ghostly visitor. Have a parent or sibling dress up like a ghost to surprise guests. Alarming Surprises Because sleeping isn't really the point of a sleepover, it can be funny to set some old fashioned alarm clocks to go off late at night and hide them around the room where everyone is sleeping.

Talking Frogs

My 75 year old Dad was taking his daily walk through the park when he heard a tiny voice calling to him. "Hey, mister! Pssst, mister!" Dad looked all around, and spotted a little frog sitting in the grass looking up at him. "Hey mister," said the frog. "A wicked witch cast a spell on me, and turned me into an ugly frog. If you'll just kiss me I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and be forever grateful." Dad reached down, picked up the frog, put it in his pocket, and proceeded to walk on. The frog called out to him again, "Hey! Didn't you hear me? I said if you'll kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess and be forever grateful." Dad replied, "I heard you, but at my age, I'd rather just have a talking frog!" Once upon a time, a beautiful princess happened upon a frog in a pond. The frog said to the princess, "I was once a handsome prince until an evil witch put a spell on me. One kiss from you and I will turn back into a prince and then we can marry, move into the castle with my mom where you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children and forever feel lucky for doing so." That night the princess had frog legs for dinner.

It's Time To Go Camping! Practice camping at home: If your kids are outdoor newbies, pitch a tent in the backyard or even inside your home. Let them hang out in it and sleep in it so they become comfortable with a new sleeping environment. Take a trial run: Before your overnighter, try a family day outing at a close-to-home park. Since my parents forced me to eat while I was growing them with you for perhaps 1/5 of their lives. Set a strong foundation while they are up, I decided I was done with meals. Oh, here and there I’ll eat out of obligation. I under your roof. Take them to church. Should You Sleep With Your Dog?

For dog lovers, the reasons why dogs should sleep in their bed far outweighs the occasional sleepless night. They make you healthier. Having a dog around, even while you sleep, will make you a healthier, happier person. Studies performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health show that dogs lower your risk of heart disease. How? Both organizations believe dogs help minimize stress which will lower cholesterol and triglycerides levels. If you recently suffered a heart attack, dogs can help you recover faster too. Remember, an apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a dog will keep your stress at bay. They help you sleep better. People suffering from insomnia have reported that having a dog in their bed helps them fall sleep. The presence of slumbering dogs can chase away the stress accumulated through the day, and the rhythmic sound of their breathing works better than a lullaby. During cold nights, snuggling against your dog feels warm and cozy, because their body temperatures run several degrees hotter. Their presence can also provide comfort, especially after a nightmare. They make you feel safe. Having a dog sleep in your bed will help you feel safer, especially if you live alone. When an intruder approaches, your dog will defend you and your home by barking loud enough to wake the neighbors. That shadow in the corner of the bedroom? That creaking sound right outside your door? You know there’s nothing to worry about if your dog is still fast asleep and snoring beside you. They help with depression. Studies show that people with depression can feel better with an animal around. Dogs are a source of unconditional love, and because they demand so little, it’s easier to let yourself be vulnerable around them. Petting a dog has also been shown to raise oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that can increase relaxation, trust, and well-being. When your head is in a bad place, especially when you’re alone at night, having that connection to another living creature may make all the difference. Your dog loves it as much as you do. Dogs want to feel warm and secure too. Since they’re social animals, they naturally prefer to sleep curled around each other. Just take a look at a litter of puppies. When they sleep, they’re piled on top of one another, forming a mountain of cuteness. Who wouldn’t want their dogs to be as happy as those puppies? If space is an issue, consider having them sleep at the foot of the bed or provide them with their own sleeping spot somewhere near you.

A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: ''I'm looking for the man who shot my paw.''

Pet’s Page How Do Cats See in the Dark?

Cats are nocturnal; therefore they need good night vision. Their eyes are able to function with 1/6 the light humans require. During the day, their eyes must be able to function without being overwhelmed by too much light. Two shutter-like ciliary muscles control their char- acteristic vertical pupils, opening them wide when light is scarce and closing them to a tiny slit in bright conditions. Cats also have a reflective layer of cells behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum. This layer recycles light not absorbed by the retina by reflecting it back for a second pass. The tapetum is responsible for the nighttime 'glowing eyes' effect because some of the ingoing light doesn’t get absorbed even after two passes through the retina. If seeing through a cat’s eyes the world would look different. Very bright light can cause humans to see circular halos. These bright lights would create a rectangular halo in a cat's eye. Their more strongly curved cornea allows them to see a more panoramic view, and the large rod to cone ratio means they see predominantly in black and white.

Why You Should Leash Your Dog? Just because you have a “friendly” or “well-behaved” dog doesn’t give you any more right to let your dog run free. Here’s why: 1. It keeps your dog safe Depending on where you live, there are dangers all around you. I live in a rural neighborhood surrounded by acres of farm land, trees, and a nature preserve. There’s still plenty of traffic, particularly since the road I live on is a popular cut-through to get to another town. Cars, motorcycles, even semis zip by on a regular basis. If your dog is wandering through the neighborhood, it’s very likely that they could get hit. They could also be stolen or run away. Your dog could also be hurt by other loose dogs, or leashed dogs that they approach. 2. It keeps other dogs safe Even if your dog is “friendly,” not everyone else’s dog is. Your dog could easily cause a fight if he approached a reactive on-leash dog, or even a dog that is contained in his own yard. 3. People have a right to enjoy walks without your dog bothering them Not everyone appreciates your dog chasing after them as they walk, even if the dog is merely curious. Also, not everyone is physically equipped to handle an onslaught of puppy love. Older people, pregnant women, and people with physical ailments would love to enjoy their exercise without fearing an exuberant, jumping dog. 4. You could lose your dog Your dog could run away, someone could steal your dog, or some well-meaning citizen could mistake your dog for being a lost or stray dog and pick her up. When I first moved to my neighborhood, I nearly ran over a three-legged dog that was hobbling out of my front yard. He wasn’t wearing a collar, so I picked him up and took him to the vet to check for a microchip. He wasn’t chipped. I took him to animal control, and the owners reclaimed him within a few days. They were incredibly upset and didn’t understand why anyone would “just take” their dog when he had “roamed the neighborhood for years with no problem.” Well, that roaming, as it turns out, is what cost him one of his legs. Fortunately, they have since contained him in a fence. A dog loose in the yard can quickly become a lost dog. 5. It keeps the peace Believe it or not, not everyone is a dog lover, and people don’t want to be bothered in their own yard by your dog. There are multiple ways to contain your dog — fences, kennels, trolleys, or in your house. It shouldn’t take a law for people to do the responsible thing.

Early Space Travel

May 28, 1959: The United States launched the first primates in space, Able and Baker, (monkies) on a suborbital flight. Able and Baker were launched into space in the nose cone of JUPITER Missile AM-18. They reached an altitude of 300 miles and a distance of 1500 miles while traveling at speeds over 10,000 miles per hour on their brief trip into space. They successfully withstood forces 38 times the normal pull of gravity on earth and were weightless for approximately 9 minutes. This mission marked the first successful recovery of living beings after their return from space. NASA's first human spaceflight program was Project Mercury. This ambitious undertaking was launched in 1958—about a year after the U.S.S.R. had signified the start of the Space Age with the successful launch of the satellite Sputnik 1. The Mercury missions began the space race in earnest and drew upon the vast resources of the U.S. government and private sector—an estimated two million Americans contributed. Testing the limits of the human body in space was an important objective of both space programs. To this end robots and animals were blasted aloft—most notably Mercury's Ham the chimpanzee and the Soviet dog Laika. Though Ham returned to Earth and a comfortable retirement at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., Laika died aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957. First Humans in Space Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space when he orbited the Earth in a Vostok spacecraft on April 12, 1961. About a month later Alan Shepard, Jr. became the first American in space on May 5, 1961, when he was launched aboard Mercury-Redstone 3. His 15-minute flight, dubbed "Freedom 7," was watched by some 45 million television viewers. Between 1961 and 1963, six manned spacecraft flew as part of the Mercury project. Mercury pilots rode in wingless capsules, which detached from their launch rocket and fell back to Earth. The small craft were designed to withstand the tremendous temperatures of reentering the planet's atmosphere and also survive a dramatic

splashdown in the ocean. Just a few weeks after Shepard's flight, President John F. Kennedy announced his intent to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The challenge signaled the birth of NASA's Gemini and Apollo missions. Yet Mercury had more to accomplish. In February 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on the Friendship 7 mission. NASA's Gemini program was designed to refine spacecraft so that they could perform rendezvous, docking, and other advanced maneuvers that would be necessary to land an astronaut on the moon and return to Earth. As the missions of this era grew longer, astronauts became more adept at living within their spacecraft and even venturing outside it. Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov became the first person to exit an orbiting spacecraft in March 1965. Moon Landing The launch of the Apollo missions precipitated an American triumph in the space race and was a major first in space exploration. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first people to reach the moon when they touched their lunar lander down in the Sea of Tranquility. Before the Apollo project ended in 1972, five other missions visited the moon. The Apollo spacecraft included a command/service module, which could orbit the moon, and a lunar module that astronauts could detach, land on the moon, and then blast off to rejoin the orbiting command module for the return trip to Earth. Later missions carried a lunar rover that could be driven across the satellite's surface and saw astronauts spend as long as three days on the moon. The Apollo missions achieved tremendous successes, but they came with a terrible cost. Astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee were killed in a launchpad fire during training before the first Apollo flight. When the Apollo missions ended in 1972, the first era of human space exploration closed.

Very Interesting... February used to be the last month of the year, which is why it has the shortest number of days. Dead people can get goosebumps! The first film ever shown in the White House was The Birth of a Nation, a pro-white supremacy silent film that the KKK also used as a recruiting tool. In September 2007, a guy named Kevin Shelley broke 46 wooden toilet seats with his head in one minute to create a world record. Samuel Jackson has a clause in his film contracts that allows him to play golf during film shoots whenever he wants. In 1945 the first atomic bomb was created, and was nicknamed “The Gadget”. For every child born in Wales since April 2014, the Welsh Government have donated a fruit tree to Ugandan families, to celebrate the birth or adoption of every child.

Ever Wonder How a Frisbee Flies?

If you have ever been to the park or the beach, you've probably seen one of these plastic discs flying through the air. We're not talking about a UFO, we're talking about the Frisbee, more commonly known as the flying disc. What makes a Frisbee fly? Just like a bird's wing or the wing of an airplane, shape plays a large part in influencing the flying ability of the Frisbee. If we take a look at the Frisbee from the side, we can see that the rounded edges of the Frisbee look similar to the front edge of an aircraft wing. We know that the curved upper surface of the wing is what generates (causes) lift. The same principle applies to the Frisbee. As air passes over the curved upper surface of the Frisbee it speeds up, creating a low pressure region on top of the Frisbee. Below the Frisbee, air passes more slowly, creating a high pressure region. The difference in pressure gives the Frisbee lift. The shape of the Frisbee generates lift, but it needs more than that for flight. Try throwing a Frisbee without spinning it. Notice how it wobbles and tumbles. The shape of the Frisbee may be generating lift, but the Frisbee is unstable. It cannot stay upright and eventually stalls (falls). All flying things must have something that makes them stable during flight; airplanes and birds have tails, rockets have fins. For a Frisbee, it is the spinning motion generated from the Frisbee throw that stabilizes the Frisbee as it flies.
