The Memory Test

SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY

Three elderly men are at the doctor's office for a memory test. By O.I. Seenya The doctor asks the first man, • Someone intoxicated and stuck in the floorboard of a car. "What is three times three?" "274," is his reply. • A small child, after returning home from swimming with family The doctor rolls his eyes and friends, telling his mom that he drowned 7 times! looks up at the ceiling, and says to the second man, "It's your • Someone calling for an ambulance because they got stung by a bee turn. What is three times three?" the day before. "Tuesday," replies the man. The doctor shakes his head • A snake lying in the dining room floor of a house. sadly, then asks the third man, "Okay, your turn. What's three times three?" "Nine," "That's great!" says the doctor. He spoke with the wisdom that can only "How did you get that?" come from experience, like a guy who went "Simple," he says, "just subtract 274 from Tuesday."

9:00am to 4:30pm Mon - Fri Here's a tip if you missed the deadline for taking a payout from a plan or IRA: Ask for a penalty waiver. Failure to take a required minimum distribution can lead to a stiff penalty of 50% of the shortfall. But you needn't pay the fine if you can show you had reasonable cause for the goof, such as serious illness or bad advice from a bank, and you've taken steps to withdraw the amount. If you believe you are on solid ground, follow the instructions on IRS Form 5329 and attach a letter of explanation. The fine will be due only if IRS denies relief.

Precious Memories

By: Kay Christopher Grandma and Grandpa Lemons

When growing up in Emory Gap, we lived next door to my Grandma and Grandpa Lemons. They had a simple house with a front porch big enough for a big chair, a swing, and room for many to sit along the edge of it. That’s where all our relatives sat when anyone came to visit. Grandpa sat in a big cushioned living room chair on the porch everyday. When Grandma wasn’t cooking, she sat on the swing. My Grandma was what everyone envisions a grandmother to be. She always had on a dress, hose, tie up black shoes and a bibbed apron. And boy, could she cook. She made the best beef stew anywhere. And her homemade apple pie was to die for! She dried her own apples and made her own crust. I remember the railroad tracks which ran directly behind their back door. Some of the hobos from the trains would come and knock on Grandma’s back door. Word got around as to who would feed you or who wouldn’t. She would let them in, get them a plate of food, and go in the living room with grandpa while they sat in silence and ate at the kitchen table. When they finished, they got up and left. Over the years, they had six sons, Clarence, Gustie, Tom, Paul, Frank, and J.B. and two daughters Della Fay and Carrie Mae. With a family this big, and later with all those grandkids, that’s why someone was usually sitting on their porch during the day. I never saw them show affection for each other, like kissing, or holding hands, etc. So when grandma died, it shocked me and also broke my heart to see grandpa slowly walk up to her coffin and bend down and kiss her cheek. Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house was demolished when the state turned the road into a four lane and Emory Gap changed forever. We look back on old memories, and without realizing it at the time, find that they were actually the good old days. A front porch is something so many of us need nowadays. It would be so much better for our kids to sit and listen to the old folks talk and laugh together instead of what they have to listen to today.

Happy Birthday

IRAs

Voluntarily pay down the federal debt and get an income tax deduction. If you're feeling charitable and want to help reduce the federal debt, Uncle Sam will say thank you. These payments qualify as charitable contributions. In the 2016 fiscal year, donors chipped in just over $2.7 million in such donations. You can give online at Pay.gov, or send a check to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and note with your payment that it's a gift to reduce the debt held by the public.

Not Just For Washing Soaps are usually used for sanitation and each has a couple of them at home. But they can be used for many things other than washing. Soap also has the ability to act as an air freshener in the garden and as a preparation for pest control. Did you know what you can do with a simple bar of soap? Toilet soap will keep pests away. All animals and insects will surely move away from your garden because they can not tolerate the smell because they have sensitive noses and smell. Just cut the soap into small pieces and put them in old socks. Then put the stockings with soap anywhere in your garden and you can be sure that you have solved this problem with insects and animals. If you want to get optimal effects, you can put soap mini fences around in your garden.

STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim. 9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby.. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. 10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack. Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors.

October Sky Festival The Land of “OS” the little town of Oliver Springs has the distinction of being located in part of 3 counties. Like “OZ” our “OS” has its own movie, “October Sky”. But as Dorothy struggled to find her way home, Homer struggled to find his way to the future and a life that could take him to the stars and fulfill his dreams. The Historical Society honors the history of our town and encourages the dreams of our youth, as we are reminded to ‘Aim High’. The town comes alive once a year on the 3rd Saturday in October to celebrate with the October Sky Festival. Named in honor of the movie filmed largely in Oliver Springs in 1998. We also celebrate the present with one of the best shows of the fall foliage in East Tennessee. In its 10th year the festival has become a favorite of young and old alike. October 21st will be full of fun and adventure. The Historical Society hosts an array of musical talents and craftsmen, a cruise-in car show, and a narrated tour of historic homes and movie sites to fill your day with fun. The festival, in Arrowhead Park is from 10am until 4pm. It will feature local artist, authors, craftsmen and a variety of food prepared on site. Activities for the kids include Battle Balls, a merry-go-round, face painting and more. There will be educational exhibits to be enjoyed by all. To be a vendor, a volunteer or to help sponsor the festival go to our website: www.octoberskyfestivaltn.org. All profits will go the museum project.

Can attending church really help you live longer? This study says yes.

New research says worship services might be just what the doctor ordered. A recent study by Vanderbilt University professor Marino Bruce has found that people who attend religious services live longer and are less stressed. The findings held true across faith traditions, said Bruce, the associate director of Vanderbilt’s Center for Research on Men’s Health, in a video posted to the university's YouTube channel. "We found in our study that actually attending church is actually good for your health, particularly for those who are between the ages of 40 and 65," said Bruce, who also is a Baptist minister. Specifically, the study says those middle-aged adults who go to church, synagogues, mosques or other houses of worship reduce their mortality risk by 55 percent. The Plos One journal published the "Church Attendance, Allostatic Load and Mortality in Middle Aged Adults" study May 16. "For those who did not attend church at all, they were twice as likely to die prematurely than those who did attended church at some point over the last year," Bruce said. Bruce, a social and behavioral scientist, is a primary author of the study along with Keith Norris, a professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine. The study has nine other co-authors, too. "I'm ordained clergy so I'm always about what do we mean by our spiritual health. Does spiritual health matter with respect to biological outcomes?" Bruce said. The researchers used publicly available data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, for the study. They filtered the data set, finding 5,449 participants of both sexes and all races. They looked at the participants' survey results, analyzing their worship attendance, mortality and allostatic load, which is a physiological measurement. Higher allostatic loads were interpreted as a person experiencing more stress. The researchers also took social support into consideration since other studies have presumed that it was a key factor. "While churches are places where people can get social support, we actually found that and began to think about whether compassion is particularly important — feeling that you're doing good or having empathy for others," Bruce said.

The Used Mower

A retired preacher was driving to town to buy a lawn mower when he saw one at a yard sale. When he stopped, he found the mower was purring nicely at idle and the seller assured him it ran great. Satisfied, the preacher brought the mower home. But the next day he pulled the starter rope again and again, but it would not start, no matter what he tried. Finally he called the seller and accused him of deception. “I said the mower runs great, NOT that it starts great,” the man reminded him. “But there is a secret. You have to cuss at the mower – really let it know who’s boss.” The preacher was aghast. “I haven’t cussed in years,” he said. “I don’t think I remember how.” The seller chuckled a bit and said, “Well, if you keep pulling on that starter rope, eventually it’ll all come back to you.”

The Roane Reader! So why is your business not advertising with us?

America and the world continues down the path to impending destruction because of Man’s failure to follow God’s Word. In that Word of God, which God entrusted to Jacob/Israel descendants, the Creator set forth rules and laws by which Man was to live by. Because God loved the world He intended Israel (The keeper of the Word) to be a blessing to the whole world.

Unfortunately, most of the world has turned against them, God, and the Word of God. Most are totally unaware that the Holy Bible says, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you.” Nor do they know God gave ownership of the Holy Land to Israel, forever and ever. Those who favor dividing that land are going against God Almighty and His commands. Man brings the curse of God upon themselves.

WE DO

Through the ages Man’s unbelief caused many to use their brain, composed of some 100 billion cells, which God designed and gave them, to concoct ideas contrary to God’s truth of his creation. Too late, upon their death, they discovered the truth, when their souls were cast into Hell. So much for fame and fortune! Instead of believing God and His Word, most men put their trust in Man’s ideas, such as in evolution and the big bang. They doubt God’s supernatural powers and credit time and nature for the existence of everything. But God, the Creator, and His son Jesus (the Word of God), claim they created everything, and that they were there at creation time. So was the Holy Ghost.

The Number Of Americans That Can’t Afford To Live In Their Own Homes Has More Than Doubled

email: info@roanereader.com

August 2017

of the biggest factors in the rise of the cost of living is health insurance. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said the Republican bill to repeal and replace Obamacare is “probably going to be dead.” “My view is that it’s probably going to be dead,” he said on CBS’s Face the Nation. So many families are living on the edge right now. Various surveys have discovered that somewhere around two-thirds of the entire nation is living paycheck to paycheck at least part of the time, and one study found that 69 percent of all Americans do not have an adequate emergency fund. But when you are living on the edge, there is always a danger that you could go over. Every month, more Americans fall out of the middle class and into poverty. Even during this so-called “economic recovery”, we are seeing alarming spikes in poverty all over the nation. For example, the number of homeless people living on the street in New York City has increased by 39 percent over the past year… Street homelessness in New York increased by 39 percent in 2017, according to the latest annual survey by the Department of Homeless Services. There were 3,892 homeless and unsheltered people on the night of February 6, 2017, up from 2,794 people at the same time last year, said the report, which is conducted on one night of the year. This is the highest increase since 2005, when Michael Bloomberg was mayor. And bankruptcies continue to rise as well. Consumer bankruptcies were up once again last month, and commercial bankruptcies continue their very disturbing climb… Since the end of the last recession, the middle class has continued to get smaller and smaller in our country, and now it appears that another economic downturn is upon us. Are we just going to stand aside and do nothing as the middle class in America dies? If we continue to do the same things that we have been doing, we are going to continue to get the same results. In other words, unless we start doing things differently the middle class in America is going to continue to be systematically eviscerated. Wake up America. The middle class is dying and if you want to save it you have to take action now.

Have you lost your spot in the middle class yet? For years, I have been documenting all of the numbers that show that the middle class in America has been steadily shrinking, and we just got another Bob Tonachio one. According to a report that was produced by researchers at Harvard University, the number of Americans that spend more than 30 percent of their incomes on housing has more than doubled. In 2001, nearly 16 million Americans couldn’t afford the homes that they were currently living in, but by 2015 that figure had jumped to 38 million. When I write about “economic collapse”, I am writing about a process that has been unfolding for decades in this country. Back in the early 1970s, well over 60 percent of all Americans were considered to be “middle class”, but now that number has fallen below 50 percent. Never before in our history has the middle class been a minority of the population, but that is where we are at now, and the middle class continues to get even smaller with each passing day. So these new numbers saddened me, but they didn’t exactly surprise me. The following comes from NBC News… Over 38 million American households can’t afford their housing, an increase of 146 percent in the past 16 years, according to a recent Harvard housing report. Under federal guidelines, households that spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs are considered “cost burdened” and will have difficulty affording basic necessities like food, clothing, transportation and medical care. But the number of Americans struggling with their housing costs has risen from almost 16 million in 2001 to 38 million in 2015, according to the Census data crunched in the report. That’s more than double. Sometimes people try to convince me that the economy is doing “well”, but when I ask them how they are doing personally the news is almost always dreary. I know so many people that are working for close to minimum wage that used to be solidly in the middle class. One of the biggest reasons why the middle class is shrinking is because paychecks are Robert James & Associates if offering free financial reviews….. staying about the same while the cost of living continues to rise steadily. “Little River” - Chapter 19

15 The Roane Reader

When You See A Bear:

by: Rachel Holbrook

“Abby?” Abigail rolled over, and opened her eyes in the dark. Sleep still clouded her mind. “Yeah?” Jonathan was stretched out beside her, obviously wide awake. She pushed herself up on one elbow. “When did you get home? What time is it?” “A couple hours ago,” he answered. “It’s about two thirty.” “I was waiting up for you,” Abigail sounded apologetic, “but I must have fallen asleep.” Jonathan chuckled. “You were out cold when I got home. Your face was smashed into your book, and you didn’t even wake up when I moved it or when I got in bed.” “Sorry,” she smiled in the dark, “the kids wore me out.” Jonathan rolled toward his wife, and pulled her toward him, spooning her. Abigail snuggled into his chest, her face pressed against his bare bicep. “Why were you so late?” “Well,” Jonathan sighed, “after the board meeting, Mike pulled me aside. He said the deacons wanted to talk to me.” “Uh oh.” “Yeah.” Jonathan buried his face in her hair for a moment, inhaling her scent, before saying, “You were right about Tammy Hall. She was stirring up trouble.” “Great.” Abigail groaned. “What did they say?” “They said someone had come to Mike with concerns. Basically the same stuff Tammy told you, so I have to assume it was her. They didn’t want to say who or how many people are concerned, but they have asked me to address it in some way.” “What does that mean?” “I think they want me to preach a fire and brimstone sermon against homosexuality.” “That sounds appropriate.” Jonathan sighed. “Changing careers sounds appropriate right now.” “What are you going to do?” “I don’t know yet.” “Do you really think it’s wrong? Being gay?” “I’m torn,” Jonathan sounded sad…and tired. “What do you mean?” “Well, I’m torn between what science has taught us…more and more it seems like the whole idea of people making a ‘choice’ to be gay is just bunk…but I can’t deny that parts of the Bible seem to condemn it.” He sighed. “I feel torn between the idea that God would punish someone for something they have no choice in and the idea that a sovereign God can do as he pleases. If He says it’s wrong and then allows people to be born that way, who am I to say He can’t? It’s his prerogative. He makes the rules.” “Okay,” Abigail’s response was noncommittal. “You disagree.” He didn’t pose it as a question. “I guess I just don’t think it jives with the character of God to create someone just to punish them for the way he made them.” “That’s assuming God made them that way and didn’t just allow some…hiccup of nature.” “I thought we were all ‘fearfully and wonderfully’ made?” “Touché.” Jonathan couldn’t help but smile at his wife. He kissed the back of her head. “It’s so very complicated, Abby. I wish I didn’t have to address it at all. I’d rather just preach love and kindness all the time. These moral gray areas are tough. I don’t like presuming to know the mind of God.” “I thought that was one of the perks of your trade.” The teasing tone of Abby’s voice also contained a hint of bitterness that surprised Jonathan, but he let it go. “Maybe for some,” Jonathan conceded, “but not for me. It makes me feel like I’ve got the weight of the world bearing down on me.” Abby turned her body to face him, wrapping her arms around him and pressing her face into the warmth of his neck. “I’m sorry, Baby. I wish I could help.” “I just want to do what’s right in the sight of the Lord,” Jonathan said softly. “I always just want to do right. I want to be blameless. If I knew exactly the right thing to do, I would do it. I just have a hard time figuring out what the right thing is sometimes.” She felt a twinge of guilt at her husband’s words. Not for the first time, she felt like her husband was a far better person than she was. She had managed a long time ago to shake that feeling of coming from the wrong side of the tracks she had carried in her younger years, but she knew some of her rough edges still remained. Jonathan’s innate goodness made her feel guilty. Most of the time, she wanted to be more like him in the way she responded to situations. Then something would happen…like that nasty man hurting her daughter…and her more noble aspirations flew out the window in lieu of the swift, definite answer of vigilante justice. She had to admit to herself she was much more like her brothers than her husband when push came to shove. Knowing that made Abigail feel hopeless–as if Nature and Nurture were both conspiring against her. “Earth to Abby,” Jonathan whispered. “Did you hear anything I just said?” “I’m listening,” Abby answered. “I’m so thankful for you.” Again, she felt the familiar twinge of guilt. “You know you are a much better person than me, right? You could have done a lot better.” Jonathan shook his head, and murmured, “There isn’t better than you. You’re perfect for me.” “I’m a terrible Pastor’s wife.” Jonathan chuckled, “No you’re not.” “I am,” Abigail insisted. “I don’t listen, I question everything, and I don’t like half your congregation.” Jonathan laughed, and said, “You’re right. You’re a terrible Pastor’s wife, but you’re still perfect for me.” “Little River” is an ongoing serial which debuted on 6-30-15. New installments will be published every month in The Roane Reader. If you enjoy this serial you can purchase “Little River” Vol. 1 from Amazon in paperback or as a Kindle book for easy reading on your e-reader devices. Rachel Holbrook writes from her home in East Tennessee, where she lives with her husband and six children. She is currently seeking representation for her first novel.

There have been several sightings of black bear in our county. Here are some things you should and should not do. Do not feed or toss food to a bear or any wild animal. Keep children close at hand. Keep pets indoors or in a vehicle or camper. Do not approach a bear–they are dangerous. If it changes its natural behavior (feeding, foraging, or movement) because of your presence, you are too close. Never surround or corner a bear. Never run from a bear — back slowly away and make lots of noise. Encourage others to follow these instructions. Be responsible. Improper behavior on your part may cause the bear to die. In the extreme case that you are attacked by a black bear, try to fight back using any object available. Act aggressively and intimidate the bear by yelling and waving your arms. Playing dead is not appropriate. Remember these Bear Wise Basics when residing or vacating in bear country: Never feed or approach bears. Do not store food, garbage, or recyclables in areas accessible to bears. Do not feed birds or other wildlife where bears are active. Feed outdoor pets a portion size that will be completely consumed during each meal and securely store pet foods. Keep grills and smokers clean and stored in a secure area when not in use. Talk to family and neighbors when bear activity is occurring in your area.

Spam is a brand of canned cooked meat made by Hormel Foods Corporation. It was first introduced in 1937 and gained popularity worldwide after its use during World War II. By 2003, Spam was sold in 41 countries on six continents and trademarked in over 100 countries (except in the Middle East and North Africa). In 2007, the seven billionth can of Spam was sold. According to its label, Spam's basic ingredients are pork, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, sugar, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. Natural gelatin is formed during cooking in its tins on the production line. Many have raised concerns over Spam's nutritional attributes, in large part due to its high content of fat, sodium, and preservatives. Ken Daigneau, brother of a company executive, won a $100 prize that year in a competition to name the new item. Hormel claims that the meaning of the name "is known by only a small circle of former Hormel Foods executives", but popular beliefs are that the name is an abbreviation of "spiced ham", "spare meat", or "shoulders of pork and ham". Another popular explanation is that Spam is an acronym standing for "Specially Processed American Meat" or "Specially Processed Army Meat". The difficulty of delivering fresh meat to the front during WWII saw Spam become a ubiquitous part of the U.S. soldier's diet. Domestically, Spam's chief advantages were affordability, accessibility, and extended shelf life. At the time it was introduced, it was the only canned meat product on the market that needed no refrigeration. Statistics from the 1990s say that 3.8 cans of Spam are consumed every second in the United States, totaling nearly 122 million cans annually. It became part of the diet of almost 30% of American households, it is perceived differently in various regions of the country. It is also sometimes associated with economic hardship because of its relatively low cost. Spam that is sold in North America, South America, and Australia is produced in Austin, Minnesota (also known as "Spam Town USA") and in Fremont, Nebraska. Austin, Minnesota also has a restaurant with a menu devoted exclusively to Spam, called "Johnny's SPAMarama Menu". In 1963, Spam was introduced to various private and public schools in South Florida as cheap food and even for art sculptures. Due to the success of the introduction, Hormel Foods also introduced school "color-themed" spam, the first being a blue and green variety which is still traditionally used in some private schools of South Florida

What is a Service Dog?

A service dog is a type of assistance dog specifically trained to help people who have disabilities, such as visual impairment, hearing impairments, mental illnesses (such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)), seizure disorder, mobility impairment, and diabetes. Desirable character traits in service animals typically include good temperament or psychological make-up (including biddability and trainability) and good health (including physical structure and stamina). Some service dogs are bred and trained by service dog organizations, while others are bred by breeders, and trained by private trainers or even the individuals with disabilities who will someday become their partners. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever crossbred dogs, and German Shepherd Dogs are among the most common dog breeds working as service dogs today in the United States. Although dogs of almost any breed or mix of breeds may be capable of becoming a service dog, very few dogs have the requisite health and temperament qualities. Such a dog may be called a "service dog" or an "assistance dog", the terminology typically varying by country or region. The term "seeing eye dog" is frequently used as a generic label referring to any dog assisting individuals who are blind or with visual impairments. Service dogs are granted legal access under the ADA Act and may accompany their owners everywhere they go. Under Title II, the ADA applies that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities by public entities. Public access rights of owners, handlers, and partners of service dogs vary by country. In the United States, ADA guidance states: State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is normally allowed to go. For example, in a hospital it would be inappropriate to exclude a service animal from areas such as patient rooms, clinics, cafeterias, or examination rooms. However, it may be appropriate to exclude a service animal from operating rooms or burn units where the animal’s presence may compromise a sterile environment."

Pet’s Page Cat Cuties

One of my neighbors owns several cats. On a recent visit, she introduced them to me: "That’s Astrophe, that’s Erpillar, that’s Aract, that’s Alogue." “Where on earth did you get such unusual names?” I asked. “Oh, those are their last names,” she explained. “Their first names are Cat.” A man in a movie theater notices what looks like a cat sitting next to him. “Are you a cat?” asked the man, surprised. “Yes,” the cat replied. “What are you doing at the movies??” the man asked. “Well, I liked the book.” What did the cat say when he lost all his money? “I’m paw!” What is a French cat's favorite pudding? Chocolate mousse!

Difference Between Cats And Dogs

A dog thinks: ‘Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me and The Cross-eyed Dog A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet and says, “My dog’s take good care of me … THEY MUST BE GODS!’ A cat thinks: cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?” “Well,” says the vet, “let’s have a look at him.” So he picks the dog ‘Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me up and examines his eyes, and then checks his teeth. with a nice warm, dry house, pet Finally, he says, “I’m going to have to put him down.” me and take good care of me … “What?! Because he’s cross-eyed?” I MUST BE A GOD!’ “No,” says the vet, “because he’s really heavy.”

Why Fostering A Shelter Pet Is The Best Thing In The World Want to make the world a better place in one easy step? Take home a foster pet from a local shelter or rescue group. Fostering means bringing in a cat or dog — or parrot, or baby pig, or any other homeless pet — with the goal of nurturing them for a while until they can be dispatched to a permanent home with a family who’ll love them forever. It’s a crucial part of the animal rescue world. It’s also amazing, for you and for the animals. Here’s why: Foster Pets Learn They’re Loved Watching a dog that has been in a shelter environment, or hurt, or abused or all of the above enter your home is a magical, beautiful thing. Though they may not be settled, yet they surely seem to know they are safe and, yes, loved. It’s (Usually) So Fun For Your Other Pets, Too They always end up snuggled close to the big pack of dogs who live with Morabito and her husband on a permanent basis. The dogs don’t seem to mind the attention one bit. You’re Saving Lives Every animal who goes into a foster home brings down the number of shelter pets euthanized each year. Not only are they helping us get animals adopted, but they are freeing up space at our adoption centers for other animals in need. Fosters are the light and joy of my day. They swoop in and help all the animals that need their care the most. They’re not only heroes to animals, they’re heroes to all of us who care so deeply about animal welfare. It’ll Make You Feel Great It is truly remarkable watching the dogs transition from skittish, scared little animals to trusting, flourishing members of a family. People find different ways to enrich their lives, fostering dogs is what does it. Both making the dogs feel better about their world and making us feel about ourselves. Your Human Kids Will Love It, Too Interacting and gaining the trust of these abandoned dogs, many of whom have also been mistreated, has been incredible for their self-esteem. What sorts of animals need fostering? All kinds: cats and dogs, birds and rabbits. Even baby pigs. You’ll Give A Pet A Chance To Shine Pets who might not thrive in a shelter setting have “a chance to be healthy and happy. It also helps potential adopters get to see what a great personality the animal has in a home setting. Getting Started Is Easy Most shelters and rescue groups have information on their websites about how to get started as a foster. If you can’t easily find the information for your local shelter or favorite rescue group, call, or send an email, to find out more. They will be so happy to hear from you.

The Roane Reader proudly presents THREE R's FOR THE CHRISTIAN

Return - Resurrection - Rewards (From a sermon by Bro. Perry Mayton, 1974) by: Katie Bailey Randolph Jesus said, "I must go away to prepare a place for you, But I'll come again and take you with me, that where I am, ye may be, too. We're looking for that blessed hope, He'll come as a thief in the night; Therefore, lets watch and be faithful, as a burning and shining light. We which are alive and remain won't prevent those saints asleep; Christ himself will raise them up...and His promise to us He'll keep. We'll be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air. Forever to be with our Savior and our loved ones over there. At the judgment seat of Christ our works will be made known. The Lord will judge our every deed and every seed we've sown. We'll receive our reward from Christ our Lord if our works through the fire shall abide. Will we stand there before Him unashamed? Will our Lord be satisfied? Or will He remind us of so many things we've left on this earth undone? Of souls going to hell because we have failed to tell them of God's only Son? Oh, let's be about our Father's business, A full reward we may earn. Laboring together to win the lost, Until our Lord shall return.

THE WRITER'S PAGE What A Gathering by: Gary Spreacker

Before time, God chose a people To be the heirs of His grace. Sinners, ungodly, and feeble, Were the ones Christ came to save. He put away sins, bore its wrath: It was the debt they deserved. And now there is joy for their path, For their sin stain has been purged. God now looks from His blessed throne With His Son at His right side. At His right side are all His own; In His Son they now abide. O, What joy there is in heaven When one sinner does repent. They will dwell with Him forever, Clothed in His own righteousness. What a gathering there will be When God calls His people home l They'll give praise, honor, and glory, To King Jesus on His throne. Songs of grace fill the atmosphere; The Great Preacher speaks to all. The shout of vict'ry they will hear, God's dear Son is All in All. Now, in time, when His sheep gather To worship Christ in this place. He meets with them, their Redeemer. They laud the wonders of grace. They meet together in His love, Singing with joy in their hearts. Speaking of their Savior above; How He chose them from the start.

God’s request by: Susan Stout On the cross my savior died Nails in His hands, Spear in His side All His blood He had bled Now only water was left to shed All our sins on Him were lain Gone are our heartaches and pain God sent us His Heavenly dove To show us His eternal love All that is ask of you Is that you love them too.

The Better Days by: Pinky White

I sat and talked with a friend today, About how it seems the good is going away As we talked about how things use to be When tho you had a door you didn’t need a key About the days of honesty and trust, Where a good handshake was a must When children could get out and play Not thinking anyone would steal them away The elders never had to worry or fear They knew their neighbors were quite near Oh for a way of life that used to be A much better life for you and me

Fragrances

by: Judy Reid When winter of the soul exists How sweet the fragrance brings The scent from rose petals With the promise of spring The fragrances of grace employ Salvation through new hope Bouquets of love and knowledge Are the blossoms that help us cope In triumphal procession We walk with blossoms bright Sharing those wonderous fragrances And walking in His light

Prayers for Baby Kayden

19 The Roane Reader

Kayden will be returning to St. Judes on August 9th for his quarterly MRI, scans, therapies, bloodwork and tests. Please continue to pray that he remains cancer free!

Kayden is off his chemo and is getting around really well. He just turned 2. He’s not walking yet, but is trying and getting braver everyday. The cancerous tumor is still in his brain, but the cancer cells inside it are dead.

don’t tell me god doesn’t answer prayers! The doctors believe that with proper therapies, Kayden will mentally and physically catch up with others his age!

Please pray that Kayden’s cancer doesn’t return. Thanks to all the people, churches and organizations that have helped his family financially, and for all the prayers that everyone has said for Baby Kayden. 

Roane County The Way It Was...

By: Robert Bailey, Roane County Historian

How Kingston got its name Kingston became a town before Roane County became a county. It was created by an act of the Tennessee State Legislature in 1799. It is about the eighth oldest city in Tennessee. It is named after Robert King who gave the land for the creation of the city. When Roane County was created in 1801, as Kingston was the only town in the county, it became the county seat. In 1807, Kingston became state capital for one day. This was to fulfill the requirements of a treaty with the Indians in which the land around Fort Southwest Point was ceded to the State. The State Legislature met at the home of James Gordon which was located on the corner of Race and Third Street across from the current courthouse. The Roane County Court made many improvements to make the house in order so it would be adequate for the state legislature to meet. Unfortunately, after meeting in Kingston for one day, the state legislature voted to return to Knoxville, the former state capital. It is interesting to note that in 1844, Kingston was considered again for state capital. The Senate voted for Kingston while the House voted for Murfreesboro. As a compromise Nashville was chosen as the permanent state capital. Throughout its history, Kingston has had many ups and downs. When the river was king, steamboats traveled from Kingston to Knoxville and Chattanooga. Also, many of the roads leading west passed through Kingston. However, when the railroads became a major part of transportation, the river declined. At least two times in the 1870s and 1880s, the citizens voted to dissolve the city. Rockwood and Harriman had surpassed the importance of Kingston. One of the main reasons that Kingston survived where other towns have disappeared is that Kingston was still the county seat. In the 1890s there was a move to make Harriman the county seat as it was difficult to get to Kingston because of the rivers. At that time the only way to get across was through ferries. In dry weather one could also ford across the Clinch River. County Court then decided to build a bridge that connected to the other side. With the coming of Oak Ridge and T.V.A., Kingston became a bedroom community. The coming of Interstate 40 also created more traffic in Kingston.

IS IT TRUE THAT LEAVES CURL WHEN IT'S GOING TO RAIN? Yes, some flowers and the leaves of some trees will close up in very humid conditions before a rainstorm. This is a protective response so that the plants' pollen won't be washed away.
