9-11 We Won’t Forget The Innocent People Who Died That Day

USA TODAY estimates that at least 200 people jumped to their deaths that morning, far more than can be seen in the photographs taken. Nearly all were from the north tower, which was hit first and collapsed last. Fewer than a dozen were from the south tower. At first, it seemed like debris. Large objects were falling from the top of the building's north tower, just a few minutes after American Airlines Flight 11 hit. It took a few minutes to realize that they were people. One witness stated that one woman fell closer to the south tower. She had dark hair and olive skin, a white blouse and black skirt. She fell with her back to the ground, flat, staring up. The look on her face was shock. She wasn't screaming. It was slow motion. When she hit, there was nothing left. The story of the victims who jumped to their deaths is the most sensitive aspect of the Sept. 11 tragedy. Photographs of people falling to their deaths shocked the nation. Most newspapers and magazines ran only one or two photos. It was worse than people realized. The jumping started shortly after the first jet hit at 8:46 a.m. People jumped continuously during the 102 minutes that the north tower stood. Two people jumped as the north tower began to fall at 10:28 a.m. For those who jumped, the fall lasted 10 seconds. They struck the ground at just less than 150 miles per hour not fast enough to cause unconsciousness while falling, but fast enough to ensure instant death on impact. People jumped alone, in pairs and in groups. Most came from the north tower's 101st to 107 floors. Others leaped from the 93rd through 100th floor offices. Intense smoke and heat, rather than flames, pushed people into this horrific choice. Flight 11 struck the 94th through 98th floors of the north tower, shooting heat and smoke up elevator shafts and stairways in the center of the building. Within minutes, it would have been very difficult to breathe. That drove people to the windows 1,100 to 1,300 feet above ground. Total number killed in attacks in New York: 2,753 64 People died on Flight 77 3,051 Number of Children who lost parents 44 People died in Flight 93 343 Firefighters & Paramedics who died 23 NYPD Officers lost in the attack 125 People who died at the Pentagon Bodies found "intact": 291 92 People killed on Flight 11 Remains found: 21,906 64 People died on Flight 175 Number of families who got no remains: 1,717

9:00am to 4:30pm Mon - Fri Here's a tip if you missed the deadline for taking a payout from a plan or IRA: Ask for a penalty waiver. Failure to take a required minimum distribution can lead to a stiff penalty of 50% of the shortfall. But you needn't pay the fine if you can show you had reasonable cause for the goof, such as serious illness or bad advice from a bank, and you've taken steps to withdraw the amount. If you believe you are on solid ground, follow the instructions on IRS Form 5329 and attach a letter of explanation. The fine will be due only if IRS denies relief.

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher Old School

When I was in the 6th grade, we moved from Emory Gap to north of Harriman and we had to transfer to Little Emory School. I had attended South Harriman Elementary, presently known as Bowers, and it was a spanking new school. I went there the first day it opened. Emory was a very old school. The bathrooms were in the basement, which required you to go outside to get into the door. There were no doors on the stalls, except for an old curtain that was very, very unsanitary. It was as if the county just turned their heads on taking care of the old, country school. But we loved the school, and all the teachers were exceptional. When I entered the eighth grade, our teacher had several other roles. Unlike today, the eighth grade teacher was also the principal, secretary, librarian, and boys and girls basketball and softball coach. There was no assistants, or secretaries, or vice principals, he did it all, except he did have a lady that worked in the office a day or two a month. We had two cafeteria workers, and they cooked everything from scratch. One janitor took care of the whole school and kept the coal burning in the furnace in the basement. Now, I realize that nowadays, there are many more students in each school, and many more government restrictions. But, we learned and we were taken well care of by only a handful of leaders. I don’t know if bigger schools are better, or if a smaller classroom is the answer, but I know from my experience, you couldn’t have gotten any better “learning” than we did. The old school is still standing, thanks to Big Emory Church maintaining it all these years. It makes me humble to remember how tough we had it in a lot of situations. Kids nowadays worry about their clothes, and what designer shoes to wear, and they will never have to worry about going outside to the bathroom, or to the gym, or to a classroom. You know, come to think of it, maybe the good ole days weren’t that good.

IRAs

Voluntarily pay down the federal debt and get an income tax deduction. If you're feeling charitable and want to help reduce the federal debt, Uncle Sam will say thank you. These payments qualify as charitable contributions. In the 2016 fiscal year, donors chipped in just over $2.7 million in such donations. You can give online at Pay.gov, or send a check to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and note with your payment that it's a gift to reduce the debt held by the public.

A 20th Letter to America by: Manuel Ybarra Jr.

America needs God more than ever. Ungodliness is actually the biggest problem in America. America needs to return to the Living God of Abraham and live according to His just commandments. Hate must be replaced by Godly love. The defeated Satan and his followers are still afflicting humanity in terrible ways. Their goal is to lead humanity to eternal damnation. It is working! It is working because too many humans, in the past and present, willingly help stir humanity away from God, and the Word of God. God said, I am God and I created heaven and earth and everything on it, and everything is mine. In Psalm 14:1 He said, “the fool hath said in his heart, There is no God, They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” God was right when He said it, and is right now! Mankind is still denying there is a God, or has substituted, a manmade god, an idea, such as evolution, time, tolerance. Or whatever meets their fancy. We live in an extremely corrupt world that gets worst every day. Mankind chooses rebellion against God, instead of obedience to God. Mankind is so blinded by Satan that they think it’s okay to kill the unborn and those who have been born. Islam thinks the way to heaven is by killing innocent people, and we see the carnage too often on TV. Our children are injecting themselves with deadly drugs and dying, instead of subjecting themselves to the Word of God. Yes judges, God’s word belongs everywhere, especially in your heart! Today America will murder 2000-3000 precious unborn babies. You can stop this abomination! Obey God.

How long can you go without washing your hair?

From double shampooing to the "No Poo," which recommends never using shampoo to wash your hair, it seems we're all divided when it comes to hair hygiene. Look fantastic recently surveyed women on their hair habits to figure out which states had the "cleanest" hair and the "dirtiest" hair, according to how frequently they wash their hair. California had the "cleanest" hair, with women reporting on average they wash their hair every day. Texas, Florida and Ohio are a close second with a wash every day and a half. Tennessee was ranked "dirtiest" hair in the U.S., with women reporting on average that they wash their hair once every week. Maryland, Colorado, and Nevada aren't far behind, with women washing their hair on average every 6 days. How frequently you wash might not necessarily measure how clean your hair is. According to experts, washing your hair too often can strip your scalp of the natural oils it needs to stay healthy, but not washing it enough will cause buildup. You might be a liberal if... No Longer An Adult I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. (Some would say I never attained that lofty status) Never-the-less. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year old again. I want to go to McDonald’s and think that it’s a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks. I want to think M&M’s are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big shade tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer’s day. I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew was colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn’t bother you, because you didn’t know what you didn’t know and you didn’t care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset. I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again. I want to live simple again. I don’t want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, justice and the American way, a kind word, truth, peace, dreams, love, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow. So‌.here’s my checkbook, my wallet, my car-keys, my credit cards and my 401K statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood.

Reformation/German Festival Redeemer Lutheran Church in Midtown Saturday, October 7

10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

On October 31, 1517, an unknown German monk named Martin Luther nailed 95 theses or statements to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Though he intended his theses for academic debate, they set into motion a movement that changed the world. 500 years later, those hammer blows still echo in the proclamation that forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are free gifts of God—that sinners are saved by God’s grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone! The members of Redeemer Lutheran Church invite you to join them for a celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation on Saturday, October 7, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Common Sayings

'The salt of the earth' is a common saying that appears in Matthew 5:13 in both the KJV and the NIV. Who spoke the words? ANSWER: Jesus used the term 'salt of the earth,' a common expression today meaning someone who is excellent or most worthy. Jesus used the term in his Sermon on the Mount. After describing the people he was talking to as the salt of the earth, Jesus describes them as the 'light of the world'.

How did you cut your face?,” she asked. “Well, I was thinking about my sermon this morning while I was shaving,” the pastor replied. “I guess I wasn’t concentrating and cut myself in the process.” “That’s too bad,” Mrs. Jones replied. “Next time you should concentrate on your shaving and cut your sermon.”

Not of This World, John 18:33-37

Jesus was not of this world. If he had been king of this world, the people in Jerusalem would have kept him from getting arrested. Jesus suffered, died, and was buried for all of mankind. He came to save all the people in the world from their sins. Because of this, when you die, you can go to heaven. You can spend all of eternity with your heavenly Father. Not of This World, John 18:33-37 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world." The kings and the people were afraid of his power. He could do things none of them could do. Love God above all things. Love your neighbor as yourself. Then you will be ready to enter the kingdom of God. Living Without Sin Living without sin is no joke!!! We have been given the power to do just that. How much sin does the Blood of Jesus destroy/cover/ remove. Answer: ALL SIN. In other words, there is no sin that Jesus Blood can and does destroy. (2 Cor 5:17-21) So why do I spend so much time thinking about sin or doing sinful things? Answer: Your mind has not been renewed and you are not committed to living the God kind of Life. #1- we are not our own anymore. (1 Cor 6:17, 6:19-20) We have been purchased by the Blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. #2 – we have not accepted our forgiveness. The human mind wants to blame something for everything that goes wrong. Therefore the problem has to be some body’s fault. THAT IS NOT TRUE. #3 – Forgiveness ONLY applies to Christians. (Rom 10:9-10) The whole world does not get a pass. God will judge those who decide not to follow him. Our job is to obey God first and man second. ONLY those who have chosen Jesus as Savior get this benefit! Maybe it is time for you to become a Believer. I am not talking only about those who go to church only. I am talking about those who serve Jesus Christ by obeying the Holy Bible whether you go to church or not. Make this statement: Lord Jesus, I accept your blood sacrifice for my sins. I ask Jesus to save me now. I reject and cancel every agreement I have made with the devil. Baptize me in your Holy Spirit, In Jesus Name. Amen! Go to Firesofourland.com, fill out the salvation card and let us know you prayed this prayer. Blessings – Bro Luke

American Customs That Baffle Foreign Tourists

Tailgate Parties Turning your car into a party zone is a uniquely American tradition. While it has spread from football to other sports and even opera, it really hasn’t spread beyond the U.S. Trick or Treat Trick-or-Treating traces its roots back to "guising" in Scotland and Ireland, but the practice isn't widespread. In some places, like France, it was regarded with ambivalence or even resentment. Thanksgiving From the Presidential pardon of the turkey to the weird meat-inside-a-meat like John Madden's famous "turducken," Thanksgiving is a dense web of baffling traditions for those on the outside. Driving One of the differences between the U.S. and Europe is that Americans think a hundred years is a long time, while Europeans think 100 miles is a long distance. Maybe it's because we live in a country with so much elbow room, but driving isn’t a big ordeal for us. Black Friday The joke has been made many ways, but only America could take a holiday about giving thanks for what you have and follow it with a nationwide shopping spree! At least there's been some push-back lately on Black Friday creeping into Thanksgiving. Portion Sizes Food portions in the U.S. are gigantic compared to almost everywhere else. While some of us are used to sharing meals or taking home leftovers, visitors from abroad take a look at our huge dishes and shake their heads in wonderment. Ice Cubes We're fond of getting a tasty beverage to wash down our huge portions. When we do, they're like nothing you see anywhere else. They're huge, endlessly refillable, and full of ice. Room temperature is for suckers! Tipping We tip our wait staff because "tipped wage" means that your server is making as little as $2.13/hour and relies on the generosity of strangers to pay the bills. Waiters, if a tourist stiffs you, it's probably because nothing in their life has prepared them for our culture. Sales Tax We have a weird habit of putting pre-tax prices on things in stores. We either get to break out the calculator or roll the dice when we reach the checkout. International visitors are used to just paying what they see on the tag. Go figure. Ground Hog Day Granted, we're not the only people to pin our hopes and dreams on an animal, but the whole nation turning its eyes to a groundhog is a little odd.

A common custom in Spain is to eat one grape for each of the last 12 seconds of every year for good luck

Store spices in a cool, dark place, not above your stove. Humidity, light and heat will cause herbs and spices to lose their flavor.

If you're cooking for someone important — whether it's your boss or a date — never try a new recipe and a new ingredient at the same time. Cook pasta 1 minute less than the package instructions and cook it the rest of the way in the pan with sauce.

HATTIE SHILLINGS

Hearty Ham Casserole 2 cups potatoes, cubed 2 cups cooked ham, cubed 1 (15.25 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained 1/4 cup finely minced fresh parsley 1/4 cup butter

1 tablespoon chopped onions 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 3/4 cups milk 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 ounces processed cheese food, shredded

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until After making eggs sunny-side up, deglaze the pan with sherry tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain and cool. Combine potatoes, ham, corn and parsley; set vinegar, then drizzle the sauce on the eggs to add another dimension aside. In a saucepan saute onion in butter for 2 minutes, stir in flour until blended well. Gradually add to the dish. milk and pepper. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and pour over the ham After working with garlic, rub your hands vigorously on your stain- mixture. Stir to mix well. Pour into greased 11x7 baking dish. Cover and bake for 25 minutes. Uncovless steel sink for 30 seconds before washing them. It will remove er, sprinkle with cheese and bake 5 to 10 minutes longer until cheese melts. the odor. Brine, baby, brine! Ya gotta brine that poultry to really give it the super flavor. If you find you need more oil in the pan when sautéing, add it in a stream along the edges of the pan so that by the time the oil reaches the ingredient being cooked, it will be heated. For rich, creamy dressings made healthy, substitute half the mayo with Greek-style yogurt. When chopping herbs, toss a little salt onto the cutting board; it will keep the herbs from flying around. To make a great sandwich, spread the mayonnaise from corner to corner on the bread. People rush this step and just do a swoosh down the middle. Every bite should be flavorful. Now that's a sandwich! Always season meat and fish evenly; sprinkle salt and pepper as though it's "snowing." This will avoid clumping or ending up with too much seasoning in some areas and none in others. When making meatballs or meatloaf, you need to know how the mixture tastes before you cook it. Make a little patty and fry it in a pan like a mini hamburger. Then you can taste it and adjust the seasoning.

Loaded Smashed Sweet Potatoes

½ cup sour cream 2 strips thick bacon 4 ounces cheddar cheese, grated 3 large sweet potatoes, cut into quarters Fresh chives ¼ cup olive oil Salt and pepper Cook bacon until crispy, either in a skillet or baked in the oven. Once the bacon is crispy, let cool and chop into bits for topping. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Cut off the ends of the sweet potatoes, then cut them into quarters. Pour olive oil on a baking sheet and rub potatoes on both sides to coat. Sprinkle potatoes with salt and pepper. Bake potato pieces for 25-30 minutes until they are fork tender. Then let cool briefly until you can handle them. Use a small plate to smash each potato down a bit. Return smashed potatoes to baking sheet. Bake smashed potatoes a second time for 10 minutes to crisp them up a bit. Remove potatoes from oven and top with sour cream, shredded cheese, crispy bacon bits, and fresh chives.

Glazed Carrots 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup Progresso™ unsalted chicken stock 1 lb carrots, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch (from 32-oz carton) chunks 1 tablespoon sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 to 2 tablespoons cider vinegar

Chocolate-Peanut Butter Wraps

In 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add carrots and salt; cook 4 to 5 minutes, until starting to brown. Add stock and sugar; heat to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered 8 to 10 minutes longer, stirring frequently, until liquid thickens and carrots are tender. Stir in vinegar; simmer. 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup miniature marshmallows 4 (8-inch) flour tortillas 1/2 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips After cutting corn off the cob, use the back side of a knife (not the Spread 2 tablespoons of peanut butter on each tortilla. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of marshmallows and 2 table blade side) to scrape the cob again to extract the sweet milk left spoons of chocolate chips on half of each tortilla. Roll up, beginning with the topping side. Wrap behind. This milk adds flavor and body to any corn dish. each tortilla in heavy-duty foil; seal tightly. Grill, covered, over low heat for 5 to 10 minutes or until heated through. Unwrap and heat about 1 minute or until reduced.

Instead of placing a chicken on a roasting rack, cut thick slices of onion, put them in an oiled pan, then place the chicken on top. The onion will absorb the chicken juices. After roasting, let the chicken rest while you make a sauce with the onions by adding a little stock or water to the pan and cooking it for about 3 minutes on high heat.

On the Road

Have trust issues with your GPS? Highway sign tip: If the exit sign is on the left of the sign, the exit itself will be on the left. If it’s on the right, the exit will be on the right. In a rental car, look at the little icon for the gas pump. The direction the gas handle is pointing is the side where you put your gas in. Carry a night-light with you when you stay in hotels. Sleeping in unfamiliar territory and trying to find your way to the bathroom in the dark can be a challenge for anyone. Attach a small vial of hand sanitizer to the outside of your purse and use it liberally when you are out in public places. Escalators, elevator buttons, door handles are all germ territory. Make your own emergency first aid kit by stuffing into an old prescription bottle: two bandages, a tiny sample of antibiotic ointment and — if you are caregiving for a heart patient — some nitroglycerin tablets. Carry a big scarf with you 24/7. It’s as good as a shawl in overly air-conditioned cars, restaurants, movies and airplanes. Take a cell photo of a list of all your medications in case you have an emergency while on the road.

Happy Birthday

Penny Pinchers Have a big event and want to look glamorous? Make an appointment at a department store makeup counter for a makeover with their products. Sure they’ll try to sell you stuff, but buy the least expensive item and tell them you’ll think about the rest. A frozen wet sponge in a Ziploc bag makes for a great ice pack that won’t leak. Save unused pimentos for later use by pouring off the liquid in which they were packed and replace it with a mild cooking oil. If potato chips lose their freshness, place under the broiler for a few moments. Take care not to brown them. To test the fit of your refrigerator door seal, close the door on a sheet of paper. If you can pull the paper out without effort, you could save money by repairs. A braised or slow-roasted whole beef roast or pork shoulder can be made into several dishes and sandwiches all week. Always make stock in a large quantity and freeze it in plastic bags. That way, when you want to make a nice soup or boil veggies, you can simply pull the bag out of the freezer. If you keep it simple and buy ingredients at farmers' markets, the food can pretty much take care of itself. Do as little as possible to the food; consider leaving out an ingredient and relying on instinct. Homemade vinaigrettes have fewer ingredients and taste better than bottled ones. No need to whisk them: Just put all the ingredients in a sealed container and shake. For an easy weeknight meal, save and freeze leftover sauces from previous meals in ice cube trays. The cubes can be reheated in a sauté pan when you need a quick sauce. Are your new shoes too stiff? Put on thick socks and stuff your feet into the shoe. Use a hair dryer to blow hot air onto the shoe. Voila! The shoes will be broken-in in no time. To optimize the juice you get from a lemon or lime, roll it hard under your palm for a minute before juicing. (Or — never say I told you this — microwave it for 10 to 15 seconds.) Invest in parchment paper for lining pans. It makes all of your baked goods super easy to remove, and it makes cleanup a dream (no butter-flour mixture or errant batter to scrape off) Season fish simply and cook it with respect. The flavor of the fish is what you want. When it comes off the grill or out of the oven or pan, finish it with a little squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Always. There is just something about lemon and fish that is heavenly.

The Doomsday Clock Keeps Ticking… First created in 1947, the Doomsday Clock is meant to symbolize the risk of man-made global catastrophe. The clock ticks forward or backward based on how close scientists believe we are to a global catastrophe (represented as midnight). At just 2 minutes and 30 seconds to midnight, the clock hasn’t been this close to midnight since 1953, when the Soviet Union tested its first hydrogen bomb. Now with the threat of a fast-nuclearizing North Korea … the clock seems to be edging closer and closer to midnight. (Uncertainty in the U.S. White House, a weak U.S. dollar, and a string of recent terrorist attacks further underscore the high levels of uncertainBob Tonachio ty of recent months that are threatening to become a “new normal”.) Now, I don’t believe Armageddon is imminent. I’m not stashing bottled water and canned goods in an underground bunker. But today’s uncertain times have me thinking about risk – and how investors should position themselves. One of the best assets to own during times like these is gold… and though you may have heard it before, it bears repeating. Gold is a safe haven… History has proven time and again that gold is one of the best ways to hedge your portfolio – that is, to protect it when stock markets everywhere fall. That’s because gold and stock markets are negatively correlated assets. Correlation is the relationship between two or more assets. It measures what happens to the price of one asset when the price of a different asset changes. When they are negatively correlated, their prices move in opposite directions. This evens out your overall performance when things get bumpy. Over the past ten years, returns on gold have exhibited a negative correlation with stock returns. That means when equity markets go down, gold usually goes up – and when gold goes down, equity markets tend to go higher. For example, over the past 10 years, the correlation between the S&P 500 and the MSCI Asia ex Japan index has been 0.78… and between the U.S. index and the Singapore stock market index, it’s been 0.96. This means that there’s a close correlation of both of these indices with the S&P 500. But the correlation between the price of gold and the S&P 500 is close to zero. That means that their prices move with virtually no relationship to each other at all. During the financial crisis of 2008-2009, the world’s stock markets fell an average of about 50 percent peak to trough. Around the world, more than US$34 trillion in value was wiped out. That’s more than the 2008 economic output of the U.S., European Union and Japan combined. It was the biggest crash since the Great Depression in the 1920s. But anyone who held gold during that period was better able to withstand the market volatility because they knew they had “insurance”. Bob Tonachio is CEO of Robert James & Associates, Inc. “Little River” - Chapter 21.1 by: Rachel Holbrook

Jonathan studied the faces of his congregation from his seat on the dais, to the left of the choir loft. Their expressions ranged from bored to curious to excited. Word had spread fast about the deacons’ admonition to address the topic of his brother. Disgust churned in his stomach as he surveyed the charged atmosphere. Abigail had made him drink peppermint tea before they left for church. He was so nervous about his sermon, he had nearly made himself sick. He hadn’t been this out of sorts before taking the pulpit since his very earliest days in the ministry. Today might be the very first time he was thankful his brother had refused to go to church. The thought of Titus seeing the bloodthirsty way Tammy Hall was eyeing him from her seat in the second pew made him angry. Larry Davis’ solemn face two rows back took the edge off Jonathan’s anger. The elderly deacon looked genuinely sad. He had stopped Jonathan before the service started and said, “I don’t think this is quite right…forcing you to side against your own blood.” Jonathan had smiled and thanked his deacon for his support. ‘Not quite right’ was an understatement. Did Tammy Hall and the deacon board and whoever else was in on the edict handed down to Jonathan not realize he had slept in the bunk bed above his little brother for sixteen years? Did they not know that Titus was the only person in the world who knew Jonathan had cried for two weeks straight when he was ten years old after their Papaw died, and Titus had climbed in his brother’s bed every night and held his hand in the dark. Every night for two weeks his little brother had comforted him, and never mentioned it in the light of day. At eight years old, Titus had given his brother the dignity of not calling him out, and now Jonathan’s congregation wanted him to publically strip his brother of his own dignity. How could they ask him to take a stand against the most loyal friend he had ever had? The choir exited the choir loft as the pianist played through another verse of the hymn they had just sung. Jonathan stood and went through the motions of making announcements and taking up the offering. He called on a trio of middle-aged women to come and sing a song, and, as they finished, he took a deep breath. He wiped his sweaty palms on his suit pants, and wished he could loosen his tie. He glanced out at Abigail sitting with the kids in the third row, and was grateful to find her looking back at him. She smiled at him, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Her face was pale in solidarity. Walking the short distance to the pulpit, Jonathan attempted to steady his nerves with a silent prayer, Lord, help me. He placed his Bible on the pulpit, running his thumb along the worn leather of the spine. He looked out over the congregation, and attempted to smile. He knew this sermon would be a defining moment of his pastoral career. “I know a lot of you already know what I’m going to preach about today. I have spent many hours in prayer since the deacon board came to me with some concerns shared by some of you.” Jonathan could tell by the confused expressions of many of his congregants that the concerns brought to him didn’t spread a whole lot further than Tammy Hall and the deacons. “I’ve struggled with how to approach today’s sermon, and I finally settled on the simplest way I know. I’m going to speak to you from my heart today, and I hope you will listen prayerfully to what I have to say.” Jonathan opened his Bible, and scanned the page. The short pause gave him just enough time to collect his thoughts before saying, “I’m speaking to you as your pastor, but, more than that, I’m speaking to you as your brother. I am just a man. I have the same hopes and fears and struggles as all of you. I walk the same thin line with my family that some of you walk…wanting them to give their lives to the Lord while, at the same time, wanting them to know you love them just the way they are.”

email: info@roanereader.com

Jonathan could have heard a pin drop in the room. The uncharacteristic silence rang in his ears as the congregation as a whole focused all their attention on what he was saying. “For those of you who don’t know, I have lived in Little River for most of my life. I went to Sunday School in this very church. I went to school here. I played baseball with some of you men. I even dated a couple of you women when we were in high school. This has been my home…and you have been my family…for nearly my entire life. I grew up as one of four kids. I have two sisters and a younger brother. One sister lives in another state, and the other sister and my brother, Titus, stayed here in Little River. Some of you may wonder why I’m telling you this…what my history and my family have to do with a sermon. Well, besides being a talented engineer, a loyal friend, a devoted son and brother, and the best uncle any kid could ask for, my brother is also a gay man. It has come to my attention that some members of my congregation feel like I need to publically address my brother’s sexuality this morning. While, being perfectly honest, I feel this is unnecessary and incredibly insensitive both to me and my family, I have chosen to honor the request of the deacon board and address this topic this morning. Historically, the Christian church has taken the stance that homosexuality is a sin, and several verses in the Scripture have been used to support that stance. While the opinions of many theologians and laymen in the Christian faith have begun to change about that, I, myself, have not taken a firm position. Maybe it is because I am afraid of what it would cost me. If my personal stance on the topic changed, would I lose my position as your pastor? Your respect? My job? My ability to feed and care for my family? And, if it stayed the same, would I need to reiterate to my brother that I don’t support his sexuality? Would I need to hurt my brother to follow the Lord? These are the questions and fears that have led me to largely avoid thinking too much about it. However, my avoidance has offended some of you, and so I will avoid it no longer. As I have sought the Lord as to what to say today, I have come to this conclusion: No matter who is offended and no matter what it costs me, I will follow the Lord. I will do my best to follow his commands.” Jonathan scanned the sanctuary, pausing to make eye contact with the people he had considered to be his friends for most of his life. After a moment, he said, “Turn with me to the book of Matthew, chapter twenty-two, verse thirty-four.” Jonathan looked down at his Bible, already opened to the passage, and began to read, “ Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” “Little River” is an ongoing serial which debuted on 6-30-15. New installments will be published every month in The Roane Reader. If you enjoy this serial you can purchase “Little River” Vol. 1 from Amazon in paperback or as a Kindle book for easy reading on your e-reader devices. Rachel Holbrook writes from her home in East Tennessee, where she lives with her husband and six children. She is currently seeking representation for her first novel.

Confucius was born approximately 552 B.C. in the state of Lu. During his life, he set forth a moral and societal code that he felt was essential for an ideal life and an ideally run civilization. He concerned himself with life on Earth as opposed to the promise or existence of an afterlife. While Confucianism has many of the aspects of religion, it includes no reference to deities or an afterlife. Confucius felt that the existence of an afterlife was beyond the comprehension of the living and that people should instead focus on living a proper and right-thinking life. A prime tenet of Confucius thought is respect, which includes the respect of family, friends, the elderly and ancestors. Confucius believed that respect for all people should flow forth from this. The quest for knowledge is also important to Confucian thought, encouraging people to learn something from everyone they meet.

Confucius say…

1. Man who run in front of car get tired. Man who run behind car get exhausted. 2. War not determine who is right, war determine who is left. 3. Man who drive like hell, bound to get there. 4. Man who sit on tack get point! 5. Man who jump off cliff, jump to conclusion! 6. When called an idiot, better to be quiet than open mouth and remove all doubt. 7. He who thinks only of number one must remember this number is next to nothing. 8. Man who put head on railroad track to listen for train likely to end up with splitting headache. 9. Man who eats photo of father, soon spitting-image of father. 10. Man who pushes piano down mineshaft get tone of A flat miner. 11. Man who fall in vat of molten glass make spectacle of self. 12. Man who sneezes without tissue takes matters in own hands. 13. Man who eat many prunes get good run for money. 14. Marriage is like game of poker. You start with pair and end with full house. 15. Man who stand on toilet high on pot. 16. Woman laid in tomb may become mummy. 17. Man who cut self while shaving, lose face.

Spotted Friends

Pet’s Page

HOLSTEIN FRIESIAN COW Holstein Friesian cows are the black-and-white dairy cows responsible for the milk we drink. Much like human fingerprints, no two cows have exactly the same pattern of spots. You may also see the occasional red-and-white Holstein. Their color is a result of a recessive gene. APPALOOSA The Appaloosa is a horse breed best known for its gorgeous spotted coat. Each horse's unique coat pattern is the result of its genetic makeup. The genes produce various spotting patterns, from leopard to snowflake, on top of a base coat color. The Appaloosa is one of the most famous breeds of horses today, and participates in horse shows around the world. DALMATIAN No one is completely sure how Dalmatians got their spots. Historians don't even know where they came from. Although they got their name from Dalmatia, they did not originate there. Regardless of their origins, Dalmatians are one of the most recognizable dog breeds, thanks to their distinctive coats. SPOTTED TURTLE Yellow and orange spots cover the spotted turtle, also known as the polka-dot turtle. Baby spotted turtles have one spot at birth, but can grow to have 100 or more as they become adults. These fun-looking creatures live along the East Coast. Due to the loss of their natural habitat, there has been a huge decline in the spotted turtle population. PIETRAIN PIG These spotted pigs get their name from Pietrain, Belgium, from where their breed originates. They are medium-sized swine known for their unusual coat. The Pietrain pig is white and covered with black spots. This leaves them looking dirty and unattractive to some farmers. We think they're pretty cute, though. SPOTTED TRUNKFISH Marine biologists know these playful-looking fish for their spotted coats and triangular-shaped bodies. They swim in clear water and coral reefs, using their spotted coats to help camouflage them from predators. They also can secrete toxins when disturbed or excited. These toxins can kill fish as large as nurse sharks. LEOPARD The leopard coat is one of the animal kingdom's most distinct patterns. Unlike the cheetah's regular black spots, leopards have complex patterns known as rosettes. Their rosettes help leopards camouflage through the grass and brush, escaping predators. When a leopard is born, its skin contains pigment cells that secrete two chemicals into the skin's upper layer. They then diffuse out and interact to produce either a black-brown color or a pale, yellow-reddish color. Leopards in eastern Africa have circular rosettes, while their southern counterparts have square rosettes. SPOTTED BUSH SNAKE Spotted bush snakes are harmless, solitary animals. They have green bodies, yellow underbellies, blue tongues and black spots along their backs. They feed on lizards and frogs, and can grow to 4.25 feet long. Spotted bush snakes live in trees found in bush and forest areas, where it is easy to camouflage when predators threaten them.

CARING FOR A SENIOR PET

Just as with humans, improved health care has meant an increased life span for dogs and cats. Along with aging come frequent minor health concerns. Follow these tips on caring for an older pet to head off serious problems. PROVIDE YOUR PET WITH: Regular checkups—at least once a year—from middle age on. For dogs, that's from around seven years of age, and earlier for the big breeds. Cats reach middle age between eight and ten years. Daily exercise Weight Control Extra fiber Healthy snacks Supplemental diet Antioxidants Plenty of water Finally, keep aging pets close to home and by your side. If they are losing their hearing, you don't want them running out into traffic or other dangerous situations. Help children understand that aging pets may get cranky. WHEN SHOULD YOU BRING AN OLDER PET TO THE VET? If you notice any of these abnormalities, it's time to consult with a professional. A lump or bump Shortness of breath An appetite change Weight loss Drinking a lot of water Scratching and digging at the skin YOUR DOG CAN GET ALZHEIMER'S Dogs can lose mental functioning as they age, much as humans do. While some loss is normal, other cognitive problems could be signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CD). The symptoms and behavioral changes of CD are caused by histolic lesions in the brain, very similar to the type found in people with Alzheimer's. CD strikes dogs that are age seven or older. Common Symptoms of CD: Disorientation Lack of response to familiar verbal cues, such as their name or calls from usual family members Loss of house-training skills Sleep disruption Medications for CD are available. As with Alzheimer's researchers are learning more about this syndrome every day.

Esther 4:1-3, II Chron. 6:19-21, I Cor. 3:16 by: Katie Bailey Randolph When Queen Esther stood in the courtyard, Hoping to make request to the king... He held out the golden sceptre Inviting Esther to enter in. It's much like our Heavenly Father When we approach the throne of grace To make request for a friend or loved one, For something they're about to face. Or, maybe we're asking God to save that poor lost soul We've witnessed to so often And they still just answer, "no". Esther needed to save a nation, We may need Him to save just one. But we know that soul's important To both the Father and the Son. So, when we enter into His courtyard Seeking His mercy and His grace, As the king reached out to Esther God, too, will bless us in "this place".

Words of Wisdom by: Elsie Wyrick

Dear Friends, I went to visit a friend who lives across some train tracks; and I was stopped by a very long train and as I sat waiting I noticed how fast the first twenty cars were going, then the others were getting slower and slower, but off in the distance I heard a loud noise from the engine and those slow cars seemed like they got the energy to start going fast again! Here I go again - just think for a minute sometimes in our lives we get bogged down in so many things and get weak in our walk with our Lord, but like that train engine, we have a prayer to Him (God) for strength and here we go again as good as before!

A Really Bad Day by: Russ Fine

I remember the day Daisy came into my life. I had just left my local Walmart and as I turned on to the street there was an old man wearing worn out clothes standing next to a shopping cart he had borrowed from a grocery store. It looked like all his worldly possessions were in the cart. He was holding up a cardboard sign that said, “Please Help”. Next to him, sitting at his feet, was a small brown dog. Like everyone else, I passed him by, but as I drove away it began to bother me. I’m not wealthy, but I could certainly spare a few dollars to help him out. I turned around and went back to where he was standing. I parked on the street a few feet past him and got out of the car. I walked over to the old man. His dog come over to me, wagging its tail. I bent down to pet the dog. As I did that the man said, “Sir, please help me.” “That’s why I stopped. How can I help you? Do you need money?” “Yes, but there is something you could do for me that would mean more to me than any money you could give me.” “What would that be.” “I love my dog more than anything else in the world. She came into my life a year ago and for the first time I felt like I wasn’t alone. There was a bad storm, and I was sitting on the ground under a bridge trying to keep dry. She came up to me, wagging her tail. Then she laid down next to me. We have been together ever since. I don’t eat very often, but when I do I share all my meals with her. I have tried to take care of her as best I could, but without money or a place to live it’s impossible. Now I am getting old and I know that soon I won’t be able to take care of her at all. And if something happens to me they will bring Daisy to the pound and kill her. To be honest, I would give my life for her. What I want more than anything else is a good home for Daisy. Can you do that for me?” That was completely unexpected. I figured he would want ten or twenty dollars so that him and the dog could eat for a few days. I thought about what he said, about being lonely until Daisy came along. I was lonely too. My wife died a few years earlier. We never had children and I was totally alone. I looked at Daisy, and she looked at me, and the decision was made. I said, “Yes, I’ll take her and give her a good home.” “God bless you sir. I can’t tell you how much this means to me.” “Would you like my address so you can come and visit her? I wouldn’t mind.” “No, I want her to forget about me and develop a relationship with you.” The old man picked up Daisy, said a teary “goodbye”, and put her in my car. I had sixty-eight dollars in my pocket and I gave it to the old man. He didn’t want to take it but I finally convinced him that he needed it more than I did. Then Daisy and I drove home together. It was obvious Daisy was confused by the situation. She whimpered softly and watched as the old man disappeared from view. It took a few days for her to get used to me and living in a house. She had obviously done so before because she was housebroken. Within a week we were inseparable. She followed me everywhere and she quickly became my best friend. Every year, on the anniversary of finding each other I bought a big steak and a container of vanilla ice cream and we celebrated our anniversary with a good meal. As our tenth anniversary approached it was obvious that Daisy was getting old. She walked slower, and limped occasionally. I could see the cataracts forming in her eyes, and I knew she was going blind. Then one day she was lying next to me on the couch and she began to cry. She was obviously in pain, and I took her to vet that same day. The vet examined her and took an x-ray. Then he came back and said that she had severe arthritis in her hips and that the pain would continue to get worse. He gave me some pills to give her for the pain and said that I should consider putting her to sleep. The pills helped for a while. But almost every day she would lay next to me and cry. I took her back to the vet and asked if we could give her more powerful pain medication. He looked at me and said, “If you really love her as much I think you do, you have to think about what’s best for her. You know what needs to be done.” I fought back the tears that were forming in my eyes and said, “I know you’re right. Let’s get this over with.” The vet left the room and came back a few minutes later with a syringe. I held Daisy tightly in my arms and watched as the vet injected her with the medicine that would end her life. I thought of the old man again and the way he said “goodbye” to her as he put her in my car. Now it was my turn. I could no longer hold back the tears when I said, “Goodbye Daisy”. I watched as she closed her eyes for the last time and as she took her last breath. The vet took her from my arms. I left the vet’s office crying, and that continued on and off for several days. I kept thinking about getting another dog, but I was sure no dog could replace Daisy. The next few weeks were the loneliest in my life. I finally realized that I could either continue to feel sorry for myself or do something about it. I made the decision to go to the pound the following day and get another dog. Even if it wasn’t Daisy it would still provide the companionship I needed, and would probably save the dog’s life. It was winter, and when I woke up that morning I realized that it had snowed several inches during the night. I loved looking at snow and I remembered watching Daisy playing in the snow. The thought made me smile. I was drinking my morning coffee when I heard a dog barking. I walked to my front door and opened it to look out. Standing on my front porch was a small brown dog. The dog looked up at me, wagged its tail, and walked into the house. I don’t know where the dog came from, or how long it had been there, because there were no footprints in the snow. But none of that mattered, because now my life was complete again.

Astrocytomas Astrocytomas are the most common type of glioma, accounting for about half of all childhood brain tumors. They are most common in children between the ages of 5 and 8. The tumors develop from glial cells called astrocytes, most often in the cerebrum (the large upper part of the brain), but also in the cerebellum (the lower back part of the brain). The grade of an astrocytoma is important. Your child’s treatment will be based on whether or not the tumor is slow-growing (low-grade, grade 1 or 2) or fast-growing (high-grade, grade 3 or 4). Most astrocytomas in children (80 percent) are low-grade. Sometimes they begin in the spine or spread there.

Roane County The Way It Was...

By: Robert Bailey, Roane County Historian The ghost of Dr. John Jackson This is a ghost story that was written in a newspaper account in the 1800s. It is the story of the spirit of Dr. John Jackson who died in 1840 in Roane County. He lived in the Eagle Furnace area and was quite prominent and wealthy. Since the banks were unstable at that time, he stored his money at his house. A great flood in 1840 threatened to destroy the building where about $10,000 or $12,000 in coins was kept. He was able to get the money to higher ground and he buried it in a field nearby. He became sick from exposure to the rain and died. During his delirium he tried to tell his family where the money was hidden but died before he could reveal the exact location. The family was never able to find the money and the property was sold soon after the flood. It was sold to a Dr. Hoyle who lived there about a month and left without giving any cause to his leaving. Later, other families tried to live in the house but they also soon moved. It was said that the key would turn in the lock without any cause and the door would open. No sooner did they close and lock the door when it would open again. The form of a man, recognized as Dr. Jackson, would move about the yard as if looking for his treasure. But as soon as someone would approach he would disappear. The sound of money could be heard as though a coin had been dropped from the ceiling to the floor whirling around on the floor and stopping but no money could be found. Whoever slept in the house could witness the opening of doors, the ghostly form in the yard and hear the clinking of coins. No one would live in the house and it was abandoned in a few months and through the years the house had fallen to pieces. However, the form of Dr. Jackson could be seen searching for his hidden treasure.

Go Big Orange! Tennessee VS Florida on CBS Sept. 16th

Among other games confirmed by CBS is TCU at Arkansas on Sept. 9. The Vols were featured on the CBS Game of the Week five times in 2016 - the most allowed for one program in a season. Tennessee made history as the first program to appear on the Game of the Week for four straight weeks. UT ended an 11-game losing streak to Florida with a 38-28 victory over the Gators in Neyland Stadium in 2016.

Last Months Winner No Winner

We will keep running this until we have a winner.

GO VOLS!

1. I will NOT attend ANYTHING past noon on Saturdays unless you have NCAA football on a television. 1a: Television must be a minimum of 60" diagonal with a minimum resolution of 1080p. Events containing ultra-high definition televisions within a direct line of sight will take priority over those that do not. 1b. Events with Tennessee football take priority over all other events, regardless of TV size and definition. 1c. Events with SEC football will take priority over all other events. 2. I will be high strung, loud, and obnoxious if you are around me while Tennessee is playing. Things may/may not be thrown. If any of your belongings are damaged I will repair/replace them, but I will not care until after the post-game analysis. 3. I will wear orange on Friday and Saturday. *No exceptions* 4. If you somehow coerce me into attending an event by having all of the prerequisites listed in (1) above, be aware that I will sing Rocky Top wherever I am and every time it is played. 4a. In the event that Rocky Top begins during a prayer, I will patiently wait until the prayer is complete before picking up the song. After all, Jesus was a Volunteer. 5. Weddings are for bye weeks. It's not my fault you are starting your married life proving to everyone you are a horrible planner. I won't be there but I will wish you the best of luck as soon as the game is over. 6. In the event that we are watching a game together, and you are not a Tennessee fan, you will not cheer against Tennessee and I reserve the right to cheer against your crappy team. Thanks for understanding everyone. Go Big Orange!
