SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya •A dog swimming with a life jacket on. •Someone calling for an ambulance to come to their campsite because a child had some bug bites. •Some park users leaving the restrooms and shelter area in deplorable unsanitary conditions at one of our city parks. •A man becoming very irate because the grocery store would not give him his money back on some meat he had bought there. After he bought it, he had frozen it, then tried to return it. He said his holiday plans had changed and he no longer needed it. (Really?) •A wedding proposal at a family reunion. (No, the couple wasn’t already related!)

Black Cats are a Good Thing?

Fast Facts In the U.S., the milk production per dairy cow is approximately 12,000 pounds In America, 38% of doctors are Indians There are approximately 100 million acts of sexual intercourse each day People with allergies can lower allergy reactions by laughing The heaviest United States President was William Howard Taft who weighed 332 pounds

Black cats are important figures in many cultures, but they're not always bad luck. In ancient Egyptian culture, cats of any color were held in high esteem, so seeing one cross your path was actually a good thing. According to Live Science, that belief popped up again in the 17th century, when King Charles I of England kept a beloved black cat as a pet. Apparently, he loved it so much that when it died, he claimed that his luck had passed away with it. Ironically, he was arrested the next day and eventually beheaded.

9:00am to 4:30pm Mon - Fri Here's a tip if you missed the deadline for taking a payout from a plan or IRA: Ask for a penalty waiver. Failure to take a required minimum distribution can lead to a stiff penalty of 50% of the shortfall. But you needn't pay the fine if you can show you had reasonable cause for the goof, such as serious illness or bad advice from a bank, and you've taken steps to withdraw the amount. If you believe you are on solid ground, follow the instructions on IRS Form 5329 and attach a letter of explanation. The fine will be due only if IRS denies relief.

Precious Memories

By: Kay Christopher The Palm Beach Factory

One of my many jobs when I was younger was at the Palm Beach factory in the Midtown/Rockwood area. For you old timers, it was located where the former Roane County Airport was. The company said the ceilings of the factory would not hold air conditioning units, so we worked without cool air. In fact, it was so hot, we had to keep wet rags around our necks. I worked on a steamer/pressing machine. That steam coming up, combined with the hot air in the building made it almost inhumane. But, it paid better than any other factory in the county and I met many good, hardworking men and women there. I had two outstanding supervisors there. Nancy Gaines and Sandra Owings went well out of their way to help me, and see that I made as much money as I could there. I worked there two different times. I couldn’t take the heat when I was expecting our second child, so I quit. After I had him, I went back. I worked awhile longer, but because my baby was sick a lot, I was fired for absenteeism. The S.O.B. that fired me said he was doing it before I could have a chance to get into the union because, he said, once I was in the union, he wouldn’t be able to fire me. I hope he got his just reward for that one. I walked to my car, in my sock feet, in the snow to keep from going back to my machine, and letting everyone know I had just gotten fired. The days of sweat shops in the U.S. are gone, but for us that were the backbone of these manufacturing companies, I’m proud that I help better the lives of millions of workers.

Mosquito Moment Mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide from 75 feet away. Carbon dioxide, which humans and other animals produce, is the key signal to mosquitoes that a potential blood meal is near. They've developed a keen sensitivity to CO2 in the air. Once a female senses CO2 in the vicinity, she flies back and forth through the CO2 plume until she locates her victim.

Use Your Sunscreen Correctly Lathering on the SPF on sunny and cloudy days should be step one of your summer beauty routine. Likewise, be extra vigilant about spotting potential signs of skin cancer is just as vital. If you have a changing brown spot, new bumps, scaly patches, or persistent scabs, get thee to a dermatologist, stat! By now, everybody knows sunscreen is a crucial part of preventing skin cancer (and painful blisters and peeling!), even if dermatologists estimate only a third of us are using it. But just squirting it on haphazardly isn't enough. Make sure you're using the right sunscreen the right way with these tips.

Lay it on thick — and keep putting it on Don't rub and rub until the lotion disappears. You want your sunscreen to form a barrier in between your skin and the sun. In some cases, that might mean some white residue is visible. You want to use enough to put on at least 1 ounce at a time, about enough to fill a shot glass. And keep reapplying at least every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating. If you're on an outdoor vacation or at the beach, a bottle shouldn't last you more than a day or two, so stock up.

Ix-nay the spray Sure, aerosol sunscreen is convenient, but it could cost you in effectiveness. Studies indicate it's difficult to tell whether you're getting adequate coverage, since some of the sunscreen almost certainly floats away in the mist. You're not supposed to use it on your face, either — although you could spray it on your hands and apply it that way, it's just not as effective as using lotion or a sunscreen stick.

Know your numbers For most people, SPF 30 is going to be adequate. Past studies suggest SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent of harmful rays; SPF 50 takes it up to about 98.5 percent. A study found sunscreen with an SPF of 100 or higher is more effective than SPF 50 "during multiple periods of natural light exposure." This year, CVS stopped selling sunscreen below SPF 15 as part of its "Long Live Skin" campaign, which also includes educational materials in its stores. And also check the expiration date--sunscreen is only effective for about three years.

Broaden your protection The sun emits two kinds of ultraviolet rays that can damage skin. UVB rays are the ones responsible for your painful sunburn. But UVA rays — which aren't blocked by cloud cover — are the ones that can cause cancers and age spots long-term. You want a sunscreen labeled "broad spectrum" to block both UVB and UVA rays, and use it even on cloudy days.

Don't forget your lips (and ears, nose, neck, face and scalp) Any protruding feature is more susceptible to sunburn, and we're less likely to catch skin cancers early if they're in places we can't easily see. Lips, in particular, have less melanin, the pigmentation that provides some sun protection. But if you're dark all over, don't think that means you don't need sunscreen. Studies suggest dark-skinned people are more likely to get more aggressive skin cancers — perhaps in part because they're caught later. So spread on sunscreen now to avoid problems later.

“LUCKY 17” My father began work on the Pennsylvania Railroad when he was 17 years old. During World War II he drove electric locomotives on the major tracks between the Washington D.C. area and the New York City area. I joined the US Army Air Corps when I was 17 years old. During World War II, I served as a bombardier for 35 missions on B-24 Liberators and 8-17 Flying Fortresses in the 8th Air Force in Europe. During that time my father and I both dropped interesting things from the massive machines that we worked in. Bombs being carried on those airplanes to be dropped on targets is obvious. What is not obvious, in fact is probably unique, is that my father from time to time would toss much more welcome things out of the windows of his 4000 series "motor" to be collected alongside the roadbed by my mother and my young brothers and sisters: things hard to get during rationing. As his train, with as many as 125 freight cars, would approach our family home, which was about 100 feet from the tracks, he would toot the trains horn to tell my mother he was coming. As he passed the waiting family, out of the train would come, mysteriously secured, bags of sugar, sticks of butter, and chunks of Blumenthal's Philadelphia chocolate and on one special occasion a big watermelon...with an even bigger splash as it hit the ground!!! Unbelievably he would stop the entire train on rare occasions to hug my mother and give her chocolate and a big kiss. We really celebrate Father's Day in my family and gratefully include memories of the long-gone Pennsylvania Railroad. Lester F. Engle

Why Everyone Should Visit The Smallest City In Tennessee Oakdale

Nashville just recently overtook Memphis as the largest city in Tennessee, making headlines across the state. But what about the opposite side of the spectrum, the tiniest town in Tennessee? There are quite a few that run neck-and-neck when it comes to population size, but the sweet town of Oakdale stood out as not only a sweet place to live, but a darling place to visit. Oakdale, Tennessee is the quintessential East Tennessee railroad town. Located on the Emory River in East Tennessee, about an hour West of Knoxville, Oakdale was originally called Honeycutt after its first settler, Allen Honeycutt. Oakdale was founded in the late 1800s when the Cincinnati Southern Railway built a rail yard there to modify steam-powered locomotives that couldn't handle the steep grades to the North. By the early 1900s, the town was booming, complete with a bank, a drugstore, five general stores, three schools, and six secret societies(!). At the height of its boom, the town boasted a population of 3500 people, much more than the town's current population of about 200. One of the most famous features of the town was the Babahatchie Inn - a hotel built along the banks of the river that runs through the town. The inn was later converted to a 1500-bed YMCA (one of the largest in the nation at the time), but it has since been destroyed. Oakdale's most iconic building now is the Old Methodist Church that still overlooks the river from the west bank. With the advent of the diesel locomotive, the town's train yard was no longer needed for trains to be able to traverse the difficult tracks outside of town. The town has steadily declined in population since, but the memories remain and can be seen by visitors who know what they're looking for. Just upstream from Oakdale is the often overlooked Lone Mountain State Forest. This park owned by the State of Tennessee features over 15 miles of back-country hiking trails, including one that leads to Coyote Point, an overlook that offers stunning, 20-mile views.

Proclaim the Gospel, Mark 16:15-20 Jesus wants you to tell the whole world about his teachings. The best way to proclaim the Gospel is to be a good example. When you share your sandwich with your brother, he will want to share with you. When you stop playing to bandage your sister's hurt leg, she will be more willing to help you bring your toys inside before it rains. What you do is the most powerful teacher of all. A man died and went to heaven. He was met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter who led him down the golden streets. They passed stately homes and beautiful mansions until they came to the end of the street where they stopped in front of a rundown cabin. The man asked St. Peter why he got a hut when there were so many mansions he could live in. St. Peter replied, “I did the best with the money you sent us.

True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what's right. True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else. Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people. People have forgotten what 4th of July really is about. This day commemorates the freedom we use everyday. It's not fireworks and parties. That's just what makes it fun. Let's enjoy one of the last Independence Days before our complete dependence on China. Let us remember as we fall asleep this Independence Day those who fight and the many that have died to protect our freedom. The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941. John Hancock was the only person to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. The other signers did not sign it until August 2nd, 1776 or even later.

An 18th Letter to America by: Manuel Ybarra Jr.

God’s Word has been under attack for years in America, and much longer world-wide. But Man will never be able to eradicate it. They do lead most humans down the “broad…way” that leads to destruction! Jesus Christ, who is, “the way, the truth, and the life,” said, few (a small percentage) will follow the “narrow…way” that leads to eternal life. Most of us have failed Jesus’ command to take up the cross and follow him. Through ages we let the unbelievers attack the Word of God and its truth, unopposed. We let our “one nation under God” become a nation of many idol gods and atheists. A former president very proudly declared that (in different words) and the silence was deafening. America’s educational institutions first started by recognizing the truth of the Word of God and taught the Holy Bible. They knew that by following God the nation would be blessed, and were prompt to give God the credit. Historically, our founding fathers, and future leaders, proudly gave thanks to God in their letters and public statements. Unfortunately, our nation no longer teaches American history as they should. Now the word “God” is hardly ever seen or heard anywhere. Most of our news and entertaining media is now anti-God, anti-Christ, and anti-Christian. They believe the Holy Bible and God a myth. They control most organizations and promote things which go against God’s commandments and wishes. Because God made us in his image and gave us life and unconditional love, He wants our love, respect, and obedience, in return. He wants us to love one another and live peaceful productive lives. He gives eternal life to those who seek and follow Him. Email: mybarrajr77@outlook.com

I do not help my wife

A friend came to my house for coffee, we sat and talked about life. At some point in the conversation, I said, "I'm going to wash the dishes and I'll be right back." He looked at me as if I had told him I was going to build a space rocket. Then he said to me with admiration but a little perplexed: "I'm glad you help your wife, I do not help because when I do, my wife does not praise me. Last week I washed the floor and no thanks." I went back to sit with him and explained that I did not "help" my wife. Actually, my wife does not need help, she needs a partner. I am a partner at home and through that society are divided functions, but it is not a "help" to do household chores. I do not help my wife clean the house because I live here too and I need to clean it too. I do not help my wife to cook because I also want to eat and I need to cook too. I do not help my wife wash the dishes after eating because I also use those dishes. I do not help my wife with her children because they are also my children and my job is to be a father. I do not help my wife to wash, spread or fold clothes, because the clothes are also mine and my children. I am not a help at home, I am part of the house. And as for praising, I asked my friend when it was the last time after his wife finished cleaning the house, washing clothes, changing bed sheets, bathing her children, cooking, organizing, etc. You said thank you But a thank you of the type: Wow, sweetheart!!! You are fantastic!!! Does that seem absurd to you? Are you looking strange? When you, once in a lifetime, cleaned the floor, you expected in the least, a prize of excellence with great glory ... why? You never thought about that, my friend? Maybe because for you, the macho culture has shown that everything is her job. Perhaps you have been taught that all this must be done without having to move a finger? Then praise her as you wanted to be praised, in the same way, with the same intensity. Give her a hand, behave like a true companion, not as a guest who only comes to eat, sleep, bathe and satisfy needs ... Feel at home. In his house. The real change of our society begins in our homes, let us teach our sons and daughters the real sense of fellowship!

Penny Pinchers Old bananas freeze for making banana bread at a later date, leave the skins on and put them into a zip lock bag. When it is time to make banana bread, you want the bananas dark and mushy anyway. This is perfect, take the amount you need out of the freezer and let thaw for a few minutes, just enough to release the peel. Keep nuts fresh by freezing them. Buying nuts is expensive, so don’t let them sit on the shelf and get rancid. If there is a re-sealable bag, then use it, otherwise place the nuts, package and all in a zip lock bag and put in the freezer, they will last indefinitely. Multiply the savings. Some people take multiple Sunday newspaper subscriptions for the coupons, and you can also ask your neighbors or relatives for the coupons from their paper. Buy fruits and vegetables in season when they’re cheaper and taste fresher. When compared to the price per pound of meat, cheese, chocolate, etc., they’re a nutritional bargain. If you’re preparing a commercial meal kit e.g.: such as Hamburger Helper or a frozen pasta dinner, toss in a few more vegetables. Chopped bell peppers or celery, and frozen broccoli or peas add color, flavor and nutrition to what is usually a lot of starch, sauce and salt. They can also stretch the meal into more servings. Ready-prepped veggies cost more but may be worth it if you actually use those peeled carrots or sliced mushrooms. A huge percentage of fresh produce goes to waste sitting in refrigerators. Beans are an inexpensive protein. Add them to tacos, casseroles,

Unless they’re on special, breasts are the most expensive part of the chicken. Boneless, skinless thighs offer the same convenience for less, and dark meat is more moist and flavorful anyway. Tough cuts of meat are usually cheaper. Place a beef brisket in you slow cooker in the morning and by dinner time you’ll have tender beef, and a tantalizing aroma in your kitchen. Don’t throw out your bacon drippings. Some suggestions from Every Day With Rachael Ray magazine: Stir it into grits, use in place of oil when popping popcorn, saute bread cubes in it for croutons, add to cornbread batter, add to barbecue sauce and brush on ribs or chicken while they’re cooking.

while Megan giggled beside him. “Did your mother drop you on your head as an infant?” Grace looked at Brady with disdain. “What?” Brady asked. Looking at the kids, he asked, “He’s not pregnant?” The kids just laughed at him, and Titus cleared his throat with an affected, “ahem.” “Oh, sorry,” Brady apologized to Titus with a smile, “what was it you wanted to announce?” “What I wanted to say is,” Titus looked expectantly around the tables, “I accepted an offer on the house today!” “Seriously?” Grace looked thrilled. “That was fast!” “I know!” Titus was obviously relieved. “Congratulations, Man.” Brady fist-bumped his friend across the table. “So, we’re moving?” Caleb asked. “Yeah,” Titus nodded, “but we have to find a house first. I’ve already set it up with the realtor for me, you and Trav to go look at houses in Knoxville Sunday afternoon.” “That’s exciting,” Megan said softly to Caleb. Caleb nodded, glancing at his brother to gauge his reaction to the news. Travis didn’t look excited at all, but he wasn’t angry. “Don’t worry, Trav,” Titus said to his nephew, “you and Haley can keep the roads hot between here and Knoxville.” Travis just nodded. “You’ll bring Caleb up to visit, won’t you?” Robbie asked Titus. “Dad says he’s welcome to spend weekends with us anytime.” “Of course,” Titus answered. “Well, I think this is awesome for everyone. You guys can all use a fresh start, and I am thrilled to have you guys closer to me.” Grace raised her glass in the air, “To new beginnings.” Everyone else raised their glasses, bottles, and cans, and echoed the toast. Titus looked at his family, and smiled. Things were finally starting to look up.

Titus stood on the stone patio in his backyard, a pair of tongs in one hand, watching Caleb, Robbie and Megan. The three teenagers were sitting in the gazebo talking. He hadn’t seen Caleb look so happy in a very long time. “God, that smells good.” Titus turned to see Grace coming through his back door, carrying a large canvas bag and a bottle of wine. He helped her unload the bag, placing a large salad, a steaming bowl of mashed potatoes, and various bottles of salad dressing on the patio table. “The steaks will be done soon,” Titus told her. “Where’s Brady?” “He pulled up right behind me,” Grace answered, kissing him on the cheek. “How was work?” “The usual. Thank God it’s Friday.” Grace uncorked the bottle of wine, and poured them both a glass. “It’s been a long week,” Titus agreed. “I was looking forward to this all day, though.” “Me, too. The steaks alone were worth the trip.” Grace eyed the grill. “I’m starving.” The back door opened, and Brady came through, grinning. “Party’s here!” He set two six packs of beer on the table, and a chocolate cake. Grace eyed him warily, “That looks homemade.” “It is.” Brady waved his hand at the cake with a flourish. “You made that?” Titus cast a skeptical eye at the perfect cake. “But of course,” Brady grinned, and popped the top off a bottle of beer. “I call BS,” Grace said, pulling out the chair next to him. “Your mama make it?” Brady grinned, “Maybe.” “That sounds more like it.” Titus smiled, taking steaks off the grill. “At least it will be edible.” “Everybody here?” Brady asked. “I’m starving.” “Just waiting on Travis and Haley.” Titus placed the platter of meat on the table. “They should be here any minute.” After saying goodbye to his friends and giving Robbie and Megan a ride home, “Who’s Haley?” Grace asked. Titus poured the last bit of wine into a glass and sank into the sofa beside of Caleb. “Travis’ girlfriend.” He groaned, and said, “Man, I’m tired.” Brady finished off his beer and reached for another, “Man, that makes me feel old.” “You and me both,” Titus agreed. Leaning his head in the direction of Caleb and his “You must be getting old,” Caleb offered. Titus tossed a playful punch at Caleb’s arm. friends, he added, “I think someone else has a girlfriend, too.” “Oh, reeeally?” Brady’s left eyebrow shot up. “Little Caleb’s all grown up now, “Tonight was fun.” Titus glanced at his nephew whose eyes were glued to the T.V. “I’m glad you huh?” enjoyed yourself.” Grinning, he added, “It looked like you were enjoying yourself on Titus laughed. “Don’t tease him. You’ll embarrass him.” “Sure thing, Mom,” Brady nodded. He then yelled, “Hey, Caleb! Come introduce Megan’s doorstep.” “Shut up!” Caleb couldn’t wipe the grin off his face. your girlfriend to your Uncle Brady.” “So, is she your girlfriend or what? “Nice.” Grace rolled her eyes. “I can see his face turning red from here.” As the three teenagers came over, Titus admonished his friend, “Seriously, don’t Caleb shrugged. “I guess.” Titus reached over and ruffled his hair. embarrass him.” “We’re really moving, huh?” Caleb asked. “Hey, guys,” Caleb said as they approached the adults. “Hey, Caleb.” Grace gave him a hug, and waved at his friends. “How are you, “Yep.” “Are you excited?” Robbie?” “I’m good.” Robbie stood with his hands shoved in his pockets. He had maintained Titus nodded. “Yeah. Zika continues to be a serious threat. Last year there were 66 cases of Zika in Tennessee from travelers to other areas where disease exists in local mosquito populations. Female mosquitoes, which suck blood from humans, birds and wild and domesticated animals, can serve as reservoirs of many infectious diseases, spreading these when they move from one food source to another. County level efforts to reduce mosquito populations and to inform residents of the need to protect against mosquito bites are crucial elements in preventing Zika virus, West Nile virus, La Crosse Encephalitis, Chikungunya and many other mosquito-borne illnesses from being transmitted in Tennessee. Fight the Bite Fight the Bite is the theme of many national and international efforts to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses. It involves encouragement of personal protection tactics to prevent individuals from being bitten, along with efforts to remove standing water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs. Drain and Cover - Mosquitoes can lay eggs in water containers as small as a plastic soda bottle cap. Preventing breeding spots involves draining standing water from all containers, including planters, toys, dismounted tires, trash and similar receptacles and covering potential breeding spots to keep them dry in the future. Clogged rain gutters are commonly found to serve as mosquito breeding spots; routine cleaning can improve water drainage. Many mosquitoes only travel a few hundred feet from where they were hatched. By eliminating incubation and hatching spots near their homes and businesses, individuals can significantly reduce their chances for being bitten. What is dry-drowning?

A family, preparing to bury their 4-year-old child, wants to warn other parents of the medical condition that cost them their son. Francisco Delgado Jr. says almost a week after a family trip to the Texas City Dike, he called 9-1-1 because his son Frankie stopped breathing. The child had shown symptoms that resembled a stomach bug for several days, including vomiting and diarrhea. Doctors found fluid in Frankie’s lungs and around his heart, telling the Delgado family, Frankie died of what’s known as “dry drowning.” Unlike deaths that happened in pools, lakes and at the beach, dry drowning can occur hours, even days, after a person inhales water. The uncommon condition mostly involves young children. According to medical experts, symptoms of dry drowning include trouble breathing, persistent coughing, sleepiness and fatigue, and vomiting.

The Roane Reader proudly presents WHAT IS HELL? Psa. 144:6-8; Gen. 4:13, 14 by: Katie Bailey Randolph Long ago I wrote in my Bible, "What could be worse than hell?" For most it would be the unending pain and the fire you could not quell. It may be the hatred one feels for another that's in the same place they're in; Or blaming each other though both has chosen to serve the pleasures of sin! It may be the smoke or the eternal darkness, or the thirst that has no end; Or the screaming and cursing the dear name of Jesus for the hell they find themselves in. But for me hell would be eternal separation from the dear face of Almighty God. The one who has blessed my life so richly and paid for my sins with His blood. As David expressed in the scriptures, "Hide not Thy face from me, lest I be like them down in the pit, no more Thy face to see". Or like unto Cain who said unto God, "my punishment is too great to bear." Not because of the sin he refused to repent of, but he was driven from God's daily care. I'm glad I chose my Living Savior when He knocked at my heart's door. For I shall behold His dear face forever, as forever I'll be with the Lord.

Words of Wisdom by: Elsie Wyrick Are you in the valleys of pain, confusion, and troubles that are making the mountains of victories too hard to get up to? Just remember the song , the God of the valley is the same God of the mountains. Don’t let Satan steal your desire to get up that mountain for Jesus is walking right beside you and He will give you the strength you need for He knows how you feel.

Words of Encouragement by: Elsie Wyrick

God Made This Day by: Judy Reid

God made this day for one and all The Big and mighty the meek and small This is the day to rejoice and sing This is God’s special offering Showing His everlasting love Sending His blessings from above Treasure this day, enjoy every minute Put a full measure of living in it, For this is the day the Lord has made From stalwart mountain to sunny glade Let us sing our praises to heaven above And thank our dear Lord for his eternal Love This is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice in it and be glad

God's love for us has always been there from the beginning of time and now to the coming of forever!

The Difference

Let the river of God's Holy Spirit flow through and around you and bathe you in His love!

I got up early one morning and rushed right into the day; I had so much to accomplish that I didn't have time to pray.

Are your depressed? Are you lonely? Are you in pain? Do you need a friend? Trust Jesus! He cares! Are you letting god's Holy Word be your toad map to Heaven? If your life here on earth was over, where would you spend your eternity?

O Simply Trust Him by: Judy Reid

Did you ever wonder why a rose bush has its thorns A cactus thrives in the desert A rainbow follows a storm We cannot understand all these things And its of no use to question why For God alone knows about each mystery Not you nor I Only an almighty God can fathom The why’s and its and musts He just calls us to obey And, in faith, to simply trust I trust in your faithfulness Grant, my heart joy in your help , that I may sing of the Lord How good our God has been to me Psalms 13:6

by: Unknown

Problems just tumbled about me, and heavier came each task. "Why doesn't God help me?" I wondered. He answered, "You didn't ask." I wanted to see joy and beauty, but the day toiled on, gray and bleak; I wondered why God didn't show me. He said, "But you didn't seek." I tried to come into God's presence; I used all my keys at the lock. God gently and lovingly chided, "My child, you didn't knock." I woke up early this morning, and paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish that I had to take time to pray.

If I Had Known by: Perry Tanksley If only I had known the burden that you bore. I would have taken time to knock upon your door. And I'd have taken time when on a busy street. your path and mine today did accidentally meet. Tonight I'm sad for words I was to rushed to say. When you had such a need and I was blind today.

KERR WINS! by: John Griffin

The 13th annual Ironman Classic invaded Smoky Mountain Speedway on June 3rd for a $5,000 to win race. It looked as if Vic "Thrill" Hill would take the win but car trouble forced him out of the race. Mike Marlar took over the lead but he also had trouble and had to drop out. This put Tommy Kerr to the front and he led the rest of the race to pick up his 1st win of the season. Kerr drives the car for the Blount Motorsports Team of Larry Garner. Billy Ogle, Jr in the Vanover Car finished 6th. The next race was June 17th with the Southern All Stars paying $5,000 to win After this race the Lucas Oil Series comes in on July 8th for a $12,000 to win race. The $100,000 dirt Super Late Models on June 10th was at Eldora and in the end it was Scott Bloomquist taking the checkers with Brandon Sheppard 2nd and Brandon Overton 3rd, and Mike Marlar 8th. This was in Rossberg, Ohio. I went to Wartburg on June 10th and watched Mike Weeks take the checkers. I was lucky enough to get to do the prayer. Thanks Keith Adcox and new track owner Raymond Sheppard.

Roane County The Way It Was...

By: Robert Bailey, Roane County Historian

The murder of Henry J. “Pony” Cash

The murder of Oliver Springs Marshal, Henry J. “Pony” Cash, by William West in 1904 created an interesting legal question. Do you try the murderer in the county from which he fired the fatal shot? Or do you try him in the county in which the victim drops dead? This is what happened in this unusual case. Oliver Springs sits where three counties (Roane, Anderson and Morgan) come together. William West fired the fatal shot from the Anderson County side while Pony Cash was killed on the Roane County side. Finally it was decided that the trial would be heard in Roane County since Pony was murdered there. However, many depositions in the case file always asked the question of where William West and Pony Cash were located when the fatal event occurred. Pony Cash and his six year old son were on their way to hear Ralph Bingham, who was a well-known speaker at the time, when he was shot four times by West. He was probably killed almost instantly as he died without speaking. The trial of William West went forward in Roane County and he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary. Pony Cash is buried in the Oliver Springs Cemetery (which is located in Roane County!)

In summer to early fall, Eastern Whip-poor-wills breed in woodlands of eastern North America. Their camouflaged plumage blends seamlessly with dead leaves on the forest floor. At dawn and dusk and all through moonlit nights, whip-poor-wills sally out from tree branches to hawk flying insects. Woodland habitat has greatly diminished for Eastern Whip-poor-wills, as forests become more fragmented. The National Audubon Society lists them among the Top 20 Common Birds in Decline. Protecting and restoring large expanses of forest are crucial for We will run this again until we have a winner! many forest species, including the whip-poor-will.
