Forchtenstein Castle, site of one of Europe’s oldest museums, has a long history as a safe for the Esterházy princes’ treasures and as a store for their military equipment. Highlights include the upper castle’s inner courtyard, the chapel and the kitchens, and you will also have the chance to see one of Europe’s largest private armoury.

The castle dates back to the early fourteenth century. In 1626 it was acquired by the Esterházy family who transformed it into the building we see today. Forchtenstein Castle: mighty bastion, one of Burgenland’s most imposing landmarks. After the tour you can enjoy a slice of cake at the Grenadier café and restaurant by the Red Bastion, where modern convenience merges with the patina of the past.

Darkness falls on Forchtenstein Castle. Only the full moon casts a pale light over the ancient walls. Now is the time when Franciscus Fabiankovich reawakens for his night watch. He was the commander of the castle back in 1683. But take care! Who dares to venture on this journey, must tiptoe past the infamous Vlad the Impaler – aka Count Dracula – in the Gallery of Ancestors. And only by solving a riddle can you escape the labyrinthine casemates of the castle.

Lackenbach Palace Museum has plenty to offer visitors interested in nature and in hunting. Hunting was an integral part of courtly life. The expansive Esterházy estates offered ample opportunity for the princes and their guests to partake in the hunt. Yet the woods so rich in game also attracted poachers. Thus this exhibition includes numerous hunting rifles and fowling guns owned by the Esterházy family, but also one used by poachers.

Burgundian Pinot Noir grapes were introduced to Burgenland by Countess Maria Lunati-Visconti, an Esterházy princess by marriage, with the assistance of a French oenologist.
