UPCOMING EVENTS:

~Bowl-A-Thon for Kamp Kiwanis-Oct. 4 ~Divisional Meeting at Murrow H.S.-Oct. 8

Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Dear Division Nine, September had to come which ultimately meant Back-to-Back School. However, Key Club is back in full swing. The events, the meetings, and more are back. Summer 2014 has been great for service, having fun, and hanging out. As we dive into the school year, I’d like you all to know that I am supporting your Key Clubs all the way. This is the middle point in the service, therefore it is important to serve like no tomorrow, fundraise like crazy, and show your Key Club pride every where. Yours In Service, Clifford Young Lieutenant Governor New York District Division 9 cliffordyoung.ltg@nydkc.org

Executive Assistant’s Update Hello Key Club Beavers! It’s still the first month of school! Definitely doesn’t feel like it! But hold still, there are many more months to come, along with plenty of Key Club events. In the past few weeks LTG Clifford and I visited schools on their first club meeting of the school year, and to say the least, the turnout of new members has been a pleasant surprise. Since we’re still pretty fresh into the school year I’d like to encourage you all to try your best and gather even more new faces (target those freshmen!!) and make this service year productive. I hope you all are as excited as I am to attend the upcoming events! Have a great school year everyone. Yours In Service, Timmy Dhakaia Divisional Executive Assistant Division 9 New York District tdhakaia@gmail.com

Reminder of District Project #1 •  St. Jude Children’s Hospital St Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made there have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St Jude is where some of todays most gifted researchers are able to do science faster than ever before and find a cure. In order to find a cure St. Jude needs us to raise enough funds for them to be able to research, funds that we Key Clubbers can help provide as well!

Service Spotlight: State St. Fair

•

The State St. Fair took place on September 6, 2014 at St. Nicholas Cathedral. This street fair is an annual event and this year, it was hosted by St. Nicholas Cathedral of Brooklyn and the State St. Block Association. This was the second time I helped out at the street fair; the previous time was in my freshman year. It was really great seeing some familiar faces from the church because they made me feel very welcome and happy. During the event, I climbed up and down the stairs to the church to set up and help out once the street fair began. The exercise certainly reminded me of the street fair in freshman year! Although I only stayed for the first shift, I still had a great time meeting new volunteers and getting to know the adults in charge of the event better. What I liked best about the State St. Fair was that I could see the hard work and dedication that the people in charge put in to plan for this huge event. I would definitely participate in the State St. Fair again next year. God is good for no rain that day! Yours In Service, Sandy Mui BTHS Key Club Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

Service Spotlight: K-Family Picnic

The K-Family Picnic took place on September 20, 2014, at Cunningham Park. It was really fun meeting other members of the K-Family, from other Key Clubs to Circle Ks and Kiwanis! I also enjoyed reuniting with old faces like former Brooklyn Tech Key Club Bulletin Editor Holy! During the event, we played many fun games! I have never played any games like those before, so it was kind of a unique experience. The strangest game was the one where each team got a trash bag and tape that they had to use to create an outfit for one of their team’s members, based on the theme. The funniest theme was a prom dress, when the only contestants were males. I loved the way they walked down the “red carpet!” Although the area of Cunningham Park had the greatest amount of bees and wasps I have ever seen in my life, I still had a really fun time hanging with the K-Family! I hope to attend future K-Family picnics! Yours In Service, Sandy Mui BTHS Key Club Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

The Major Emphasis Program •  Key Club’s Major Emphasis “Children: Their Future, Our Focus” In 1946, Key Club International challenged all Key Clubs and members to focus energies on making an international impact. This program still is followed today through the Major Emphasis: “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” •  To fulfill the mission of the Major Emphasis, Key Club International serves children in many ways. Members participate in the hands-on service initiative, currently The Eliminate Project, and fundraise for Key Club International’s partner organizations: Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes and UNICEF.

The Eliminate Project The Eliminate Project is a worldwide International campaign (brought together by Kiwanis International and UNICEF) to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. “This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.” –New York District Key Club Website. This is the last year of the project. So now, it is up to the club officers and members to push, support, and fundraise like crazy to help Kiwanis International and UNICEF reach its goal of $110 million. We already have over $55 million jointly.

The 67th Annual Leadership Training Conference •  At the conclusion of each service year the New York District meets in Albany for our Leadership Training Conference (District Convention). This 3-day (weekend) experience is full of workshops, friends, and fun. LTC is great for incoming officers to be trained and as well as graduating seniors to say goodbye. Join us this year for an extraordinary weekend and a fulfilling opportunity. LTC 2015 (Albany, NY) March 27th-29th, 2015 The Desmond Hotel

The 72nd Key Club International Convention •  What Is International Convention? The purpose of the convention is to elect the international officers, review accomplishments of the past year and set policies for the coming year. New programs are announced and national speakers participate. Members from every club should attend each year. •  When Is ICON? ICON is early July. If you are interested in coming to ICON 2015 keep a look out on keyclub.org in April or ask next service year’s Lieutenant Governor. •  Why go to the convention? Because it’s the biggest event of the Key Club year! Imagine celebrating the amazing things Key Club does with more than 1,600 Key Clubbers from all across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
