This presentation is only applicable to Divisions 9 and 10 of the New York District of Key Club International.


Gaining Interest In “Running” for Lieutenant Governor New York District Key Club—Divisions 9 and 10

•  Firstly, What is a Lieutenant Governor? A Lieutenant Governor is responsible for supporting and growing the clubs within his or her division and serving as a liaison between the district and the club. •  What are some duties of a Lieutenant Governor? Duties include publication of a monthly newsletter, club officer training and support, holding divisional meetings and serving on one or more district committees.


Ready to Officially “Run” for Lieutenant Governor New York District Key Club—Divisions 9 and 10

Ø  You’ve made up your mind and now you want to officially announce your candidacy. •  Inform your current Lieutenant Governor (LTG). q  Check for your Lieutenant Governor’s email on previous emails or ask your current Key Club Officers. q  Send your current Lieutenant Governor a ‘Letter of Intent.’ This is an email where the subject reads “Letter of Intent” and the email reads …


Waiting Until The Election Process Begins… New York District Key Club—Divisions 9 and 10

Ø  In this Division (9 & 10), Lieutenant Governors are appointed based on interviews held in late January/early February. Your current LTG should contact you with the date and location of the interview.


The Lieutenant Governor Interview New York District Key Club—Divisions 9 and 10

•  Who is at the interview? Your current Lieutenant Governor, Kiwanis Committee Representative Mr. Leonard Gioia, and a previous Lieutenant Governor. •  What type of questions are asked? We, as in the interviewers, ask questions about your interests in an attempt to get to know you better, reasons behind seeking appointment of Lieutenant Governor, and plans for your high school career/post high school. •  What do I wear? This is a job you are seeking, thus dress like it. The dress code is business professional. This means for a male, you are to be in a sports coat/blazer, button down shirt, tie, slacks/dress pants, and shoes. For females, this means a blazer with a dress of appropriate length, a dress blouse, skirt of appropriate length, and shoes.


The Lieutenant Governor’s Notification New York District Key Club—Division 9 and 10

Ø  After one week to ten days, your current Lieutenant Governor will email you saying “you’ve been appointed as the next Lieutenant Governor and bring the completed packet Mr. Gioia gave you to the next divisional meeting” OR “On behalf of the interviewers, I regret to inform you that you have not been chosen as the next Lieutenant Governor.” Ø  If you have been selected as the next Lieutenant Governor, stay in constant contact with him/her for the next few months. Your current LTG will send you various resources and explain a lot of things to you. In addition, ask to sit in on a couple of meetings, speak at divisional meetings, and even attend Kiwanis Meetings.


Lieutenant Governor-Elect New York District Key Club—Divisions 9 and 10

Ø  You have been appointed as Lieutenant Governor for the upcoming service year. Congratulations! There are only twenty seven Lieutenant Governors in the New York District so be proud of yourself. Ø  However, with the job of Lieutenant Governor comes a lot of responsibility so prepared for anything. If you are not organized, it is time to start changing habits. Ø  Start reaching out to other Lieutenant GovernorElects, build those relationships early so when you all get installed as Lieutenant Governors, you can all depend on each other for help.


Lieutenant Governor Timeline New York District Key Club—Divisions 9 and 10

Ø  Late March: Installed as Lieutenant Governor Ø  April: Attend April/Spring Board Meeting in upstate New York, publicize International Convention, attend at least one Kiwanis Meeting Ø  May: Hold at least 1 divisional Meeting by this point Ø  June: Get Ready for International Convention, Late June/Early July, attend at least two Kiwanis Meetings Ø  July/August: Summer Time, Get ready for a summer full of service. Plan summer events and host the annual Summer divisional with your Division 9 or 10 counterpart, attend at least three Kiwanis Meetings Ø  September: Begin to visit division Key Clubs, attend September/Fall Board Meeting in Albany, NY Ø  October: Hold another divisional (emphasize Back to School projects/events), attend at least one Kiwanis Meeting Ø  November: Attend the Tri-K Board Meeting, hold another divisional(advertise Lieutenant Governor position), attend at least one Kiwanis Meeting Ø  December-January: Prepare for the Holiday Season with divisional events, attend the MidWinter Board Meeting in Albany, NY, attend at least two Kiwanis Meetings, host the Lieutenant Governor position with Mr. Gioia, hold another divisional Ø  February-March: Prepare for the Leadership Training Conference, apply for Robert F. Lucas Distinguished LTG’s Award, hold another divisional Ø  Late March: You have been retired and are now a has-been J
