Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Dear Key Club Members of Division Nine of the New York District of Key Club International, Firstly, I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. It certainly felt good to have these couple of days off from school and see family. Next, as the service year concludes, we as NYDKC Division 9 have a duty to kick our strides in service into high gear. With less than four months until the Leadership Training Conference ‘LTC’ we have to meet our goals which include 65,000 service hours for the district. Furthermore, at LTC we celebrate the goals we have achieved and in order for that to happen we need to meet these goals. Here is a look into the future for us. The Divisional Cabinet (your Executive Assistant ’E.A.’ Timmy Dhakaia and I) will be planning new and fun events for the division to enjoy over the next month. In addition, Mr. Gioia and I are looking for the next Lieutenant Governor to lead our division for the 2015-2016 service year. Is that you? Interested? Contact me at the below email or on the Contact section of this newsletter! Likewise LTC is rapidly approaching and I’d like at least 55 Key Club members to go from our division. Executive Assistant’s Update Dear Members of Division Nine of the New York District Key Club, Here the holidays come! And what more of a better way is it than to celebrate this season of giving thanks by going out and helping the community! I hope you guys enjoyed your Thanksgiving break, and remember just because Thanksgiving passed does not mean you shouldn’t be just as thankful of everything you have every day! Just a reminder that many people out there do not have a fraction of the privileges we indulge in, so this winter season let’s make it our best effort to make plenty of lives happier out there. Go out there and help a local soup kitchen, raise money for awareness, or do whatever it is your club wants to do in an effort to help others. November Divisional Meeting Recap Divisional Meetings are hosted by Lt. Governor Clifford Young. All clubs meet up on a monthly basis to discuss past events (including service projects and fundraisers) and future activities. At these meetings, Key Clubbers within Division 9 have the opportunity to learn more about the international organization and about serving the community. Attending divisionals is a great way to become more involved in Key Club. •  The November Divisional Meeting was held at John Dewey High School on November 13th, 2014. There were over 50 attendees at the divisional and it was very successful. Members learned everything from Key Club Week and paperwork forms to dues collection and LTC. If you missed this month’s divisional, be sure to come to the next! •

Lieutenant Governor for the 2015-2016 Service Year (April 2015-March 2016) So You Want To Be Lieutenant Governor (LTG)? Well, you are in for the time of your life in this position. You will be meeting a variety of people across Brooklyn (Division 9), New York City & State, and the World. Here's a little breakdown of the job! •  "Each lieutenant governor is responsible for supporting and growing the clubs within his or her division and serving as a liaison between the district and the club. Duties include publication of a newsletter, club officer training and support, holding divisional meetings, serving on one or more district committees." •  In Divisions 9 and 10 of the New York District Key Club (NYDKC), we (Mr. Gioia and I) choose who will be the next LTG following the conclusion of an interview that will occur in Mid-January to Early February. Shortly after the interviews we will select the next Lieutenant Governor. I wish everyone who is signing up the best of luck! •

Service Spotlight: Phone Banking In the weeks leading up to November 4th, Key Clubbers called neighbors to remind them about election day. They got volunteer service for their work. Just a couple of weeks ago, I did service for Assemblyman William Colton. I had a lot of fun calling people's homes, telling them to vote for him and explaining all of the positive things he has done for the Bensonhurst community. Some people didn't pick up so I left a message and when they answered they kept me on the phone for 10 minutes! It was a great experience for me to have so for next time I know what to improve on. This service was a pleasure and I wouldn't mind doing it again next time! Rayna Pajares-Held Key Club Member Edward R. Murrow High School Key Club

Service Spotlight: Speak Up and Clean Up We cleaned up the streets and made sure to remind people not to litter. “In the “Speak Up & Clean Up” event on November 22, many students and I went around Benson Avenue to pick up trash lying around in surrounding neighborhoods. This clean up event was very beneficial to the neighborhood and us as well. It helped us to promote our environmental sanitation and it hopefully made us influence other people into throwing away their trash and not littering. Without littering, the streets will be cleaner and the neighborhood would be in a safer and healthier environment. Despite the weather and loss of feeling in our hands, the event was enjoyable. Fortunately, pizza was provided at the conclusion of the event and was a success.” Jeadelle Gustave Key Club Member Edward R. Murrow High School Key Club

Service Spotlight: Speak Up and Clean Up On Saturday, November 22nd, Midwood's very own Key Club attended the Bensonhurst clean up hosted by Assemblyman William Colton. Members got the chance to not only meet new Hornets, but to meet other Key Clubbers from different schools such as Brooklyn Tech and Circle-Kerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from NYU. We started off by trying to gather our group which was hard since we had never seen each other before. Though our group wasn't as large as the others, we got to know each other even better and actually got a lot done. One of the people I was so glad to meet was a former Hornet who had already graduated but came to the event to support the Midwood family. When we realized we were going beyond our goal for cleaning up, we headed back down to the cabin and enjoyed some pizza...PLENTY of pizza. Not only did we do good, but we did good while making friends. This was only my second event this year but I can't wait for those to come! Noran Abo-Donia Key Club Member Midwood High School Key Club On our previous clean up of Bensonhurst, the key club of Midwood was able to communicate with several other committees. We cleaned up the area of bath avenue by raking leaves into bags that would prevent flooding. This was an amazing adventure because we were able to talk with old friends and meet new people who are a part of helping the society. We were split into groups according to the clubs and schools that we attended. After two hours of heavy cleaning, everyone met up at the original location. We all ate several slices of pizza and socialized afterwards. This was a fun experience for me! Michelle Chen Key Club Member Midwood High School Key Club

Service Spotlight: The Canned Food Drive What this is: •  In this event Key Club members and Madison High School students took part and collected canned food. This was a collection we participated in that way on Thanksgiving we would make food for people who need food. •  Bringing smiles on the faces of others is what we do. Just by providing some food we are doing some good deeds that will surely make others remember us.

This gave me a great feeling. Thinking that only by providing some cans I would help in filling someone’s tummy oh well what better could I do. I don’t know how to make well then let’s give it to someone who can make it and give to someone needy. -Rida Ahsan

Service Spotlight: The Africa Project On November 8th, a group of Key Clubbers worked on the Africa Project. It was a wonderful experience. We packed boxes of clothes, shoes, books, toys, and the like for kids in Africa. We saw pictures of the children and it melted my heart. The smiles on their faces made the experience more amazing and the event more important. This event really opened my eyes and made me want to do more to help these kids. The Africa Project is a great way to help those children in Africa who are deprived from resources for an education and a healthy lifestyle. Yusra Abdur Key Club Member Midwood High School Key Club

Service Spotlight: FDR High School Key Turns 50! There have been many wonderful events occurring at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in celebration of its 50th Anniversary! To start out the 50th year anniversary of our school, we decided to have a Women’s Flag Football game on October 6th, in order to raise awareness for breast cancer. This game was dedicated to one of FDR’s very own staff members, Brenda Burns. Members of the Key Club and other student organizations sold tickets at $5 per person and the turnout was incredible. The staff members who played in the game were very convivial and had a great time. The students who attended, cheered for their favorite teachers, and showed respect by coming to the game. This was an extravagant event, and it was a perfect way to start the celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary. The other three events occurred today, on November 22nd. For the last two months, members of the FDR Key Club and other student organizations have been advertising three exciting events. These events included a pep rally to celebrate the accomplishments of the FDR sport’s teams and the students involved, the opening of a time capsule buried on November 22, 1989, and lastly, a homecoming dance. The pep rally and the opening of the time capsule were free events that were open to alumni, staff, and current students. Key Club members and other student organizations sold homecoming tickets at $10 for each student and $15 for alumni.

Service Spotlight: FDR High School Key Turns 50! November was a very busy month for the FDR High School family. We are very proud of what our school has accomplished over the past 50 years, and the many more accomplishments that are yet to come. This month was filled with teamwork, happiness, and an abundance of cougar pride. The members of the FDR Key Club are looking forward to raising money for people in need, as well as donating presents to underprivileged kids next month.

The 67th Annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC) •  At the conclusion of each service year the New York District meets in Albany for our Leadership Training Conference (District Convention). This 3-day (weekend) experience is full of workshops, friends, and fun. LTC is great for incoming officers to be trained and as well as graduating seniors to say goodbye. Join us this year for an extraordinary weekend and a fulfilling opportunity.

The 67th Annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC) •  Conference Staff: Applications are NOW out on the website. The Conference Staff at LTC help make the conference run as smooth as possible. Tasks include, but are not limited too: security, setting up workshops, and clean ups. If you are selected as part of the Conference Staff you will join the District Board a day earlier to prepare for the weekend and your registration price will be discounted. (http://nydkc.org/events/leadership-training-conference/ then go to Conference Staff) •  Awards: Each year the New York District Key Club Awards Committee releases the LTC Awards Booklet. In this booklet is a detailed explanation for every award a Key Club member/officer can apply. From the Distinguished Club President to the Distinguished Key Clubber Award ‘DKC’, every thing is included. The 67th Annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC) •  Elections: At the annual Leadership Training Conference Key Clubbers have the opportunity to elect the following service years’ district officers and endorse prospective international officers. These positions are District Governor, District Secretary, District Treasurer, International Trustee, International Vice President, and International President. The 72nd Annual Key Club International Convention (ICON) •  What Is International Convention? The purpose of the convention is to elect the international officers, review accomplishments of the past year and set policies for the coming year. New programs are announced and national speakers participate. Members from every club should attend each year. •  When Is ICON? ICON is early July. If you are interested in coming to ICON 2015 keep a look out on keyclub.org in April or ask next service year’s Lieutenant Governor. This upcoming ICON is surely going to be one to remember with 4 branches of the Kiwanis Family coming together: Kiwanis, Circle-K, Key Club, and Aktion Club. •  Why go to the convention? Because it’s the biggest event of the Key Club year! Imagine celebrating the amazing things Key Club does with more than 1,600 Key Clubbers from all across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

ICON 2015 June 24th-28th, 2015 Indianapolis, IN

The Major Emphasis Program •  Key Club’s Major Emphasis “Children: Their Future, Our Focus” In 1946, Key Club International challenged all Key Clubs and members to focus energies on making an international impact. This program still is followed today through the Major Emphasis: “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” •  To fulfill the mission of the Major Emphasis, Key Club International serves children in many ways. Members participate in the hands-on service initiative, currently The Eliminate Project, and fundraise for Key Club International’s partner organizations: Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes and UNICEF.

Kiwanis District Charities: Kamp Kiwanis Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and adventure. It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is designed to mainstream all children, including up to 20 each session with special needs. It is noncompetitive with emphasis on group and team building. No activity is forced, but all are encouraged. •  Flashback to the Bowl-A-Thon for Kamp Kiwanis on October 4th. •

New York District Key Club Projects •  St. Jude Children’s Hospital St Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made there have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St Jude is where some of todays most gifted researchers are able to do science faster than ever before and find a cure. In order to find a cure St. Jude needs us to raise enough funds for them to be able to research, funds that we Key Clubbers can help provide as well!

•  Make A Wish

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories, on average, every 38 minutes. They believe that a wish experience can be a game changer. That one belief guides them and inspires them to grant wishes that change the lives on children everywhere. In order to grant these wishes, the foundation needs funds that we Key Clubbers can help provide!
