Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Dear Division 9 of the New York District Key Club, For those of you who do not know me, my name is Clifford Young and I am your Lieutenant Governor. Essentially I, along with our Kiwanis Committee Representative, oversee all Brooklyn Key Clubs. Just a couple of weeks ago we reached the half-way point in the service year and let me tell you I have never been so proud of Division 9 Key Clubs. You are all amazing me with every picture at a meeting, to doing a service project, or just having a conversation. As most Key Clubs increase around this time, let me be the first to tell you welcome to this great organization. In this newsletter, you will find the E.A’s update, service spotlights, and upcoming events. Happy Key Clubbing! Yours In Service, Clifford Young Lieutenant Governor New York District Key Club-Division 9 cliffordyoung.ltg@nydkc.org

Executive Assistant’s Update Hi Key Clubbers, Doesn’t it feel like we've been in school for 5 months instead of only 2?! Your studies may be exhausting ,but that only allows for Key Club events to be an opportune time to relieve some of the tension and put a smile on your face. Once you get out there and participate in the helping of others, there truly is a feeling of fulfillment that you would not have gained otherwise. Continue to grow your respective schools’ Key Club family as it is still a prime time to recruit members, and go out there to help make the world less of a struggle for those in need. Happy Key Clubbing! Yours In Service, Timmy Dhakaia Divisional Executive Assistant Division 9 New York District tdhakaia@gmail.com

Club President’s Welcome Message: Club President: David Jin Hi everyone! I'm David Jin, the president of Brooklyn Technical High School Key Club. Joining Key Club is one of the best choices I've ever made. It gave me a means of meeting new people, making great memories, and learning how to communicate with people. Becoming a better public speaker and leader is also one of the best gifts Key Club has given me. I've learned so much about the community, and even world problems with how I can contribute way to solve it! Through my growth in Key Club and my dedication, It's definitely worth giving Key Club a chance and I guarantee it'll be well worth your time! Yours In Service, David Jin Key Club President BTHS Key Club

Members’ Welcome Message: Hi New Key Clubbers! My experience in Key Club led me to lots of laughter and fun. I became more interactive with the community and realized how important it is to clean up parks. Through Key Club I have met new people, made new friends and see nature in a different way. During the John Dewey High School Key Club Kaiser Park event, everyone was working together and having fun. Even though it was a hot day, to stand under the sun being able to see other people having fun and eating with friends made it worthwhile. Key Club is very meaningful in terms of helping those who are in need and supporting the community. The Key Club events and meetings are fun to attend because everyone in the club communicates with other people and enjoys themselves. Through Key Club events I was able to meet different people and learn how a little effort can make a big difference. Key Club is a way to perform commitment to helping others. During the Breast Cancer Walk many girls were very cold and this led to the male Key Club members lending their sweaters to the girls who were cold. Key Club increases one’s care and attention for others in a good way. I really enjoyed attending these events and meetings. After each event I would look forward to the next meeting or event because of the fun and smiles everyone gets during these times. Suet Lee, Key Club Member John Dewey High School Key Club

Members’ Welcome Message:

Hi New Key Club Members! I've never had time to join a club due to the requirement of time and dedication. But, ever since I joined Key Club my life feels complete. Every meeting brings us closer and the bond continues to grow as time goes on. Who knew I would encounter many teenagers with their arms open; accepting me as who I am. I've always thought I was a failure, but they gave me hope to enjoy my life. Through Key Club, I've met people with different cultures and ethnicity. It united us, we are a family. Service Spotlight: Bowl-A-Thon On Saturday October 4th, NYDKC Division 9 went bowling to help raise money for Kamp Kiwanis. We had sponsors who donated a certain amount of money for each pin our team knocked down. Not only was this a great fundraiser, but we also had fun! “I had a great time with my friends and fellow key club members says our treasurer, Tiffany. Service Spotlight: Breast Cancer Walk 2014 On Sunday October 19th, Key Club and other students of Edward R. Murrow High School went to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. We walked in Prospect Park to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. The volunteers at the event cheered for us as we walked these 4 miles. Whether we walked or volunteered, we all got to spend this day together.

Service Spotlight: Breast Cancer Walk 2014 On October 18, I, with the rest of New York, woke up on a chilly Sunday morning to trek out to Prospect Park to walk for breast cancer. While the majority of the Midwood High School Key Club was volunteering, I decided to participate in the 3.5 mile walk. What I found most interesting was that people from all different neighborhoods of Brooklyn took time out of their Sunday to walk for this important cause. Old, young, male, female, wives, husbands, daughters, sons, we were all here to walk for the same thing. And though it was tough to walk these long miles on a chilly October morning, but it was rewarding. We'd admire the scenery of Prospect Park and the brisk chill of October, reminding us that fall is at it's nascence. The crowd bursted into excitement each time we'd finish another mile; they cheered and encouraged each other to continue walking, and finally when we reached the finish line, we were all relieved and a sense of accomplishment lingered over the crowd. It was hard to feel alone or isolated because we as a community encouraged each other to continue walking. Though we were all essentially strangers, we felt tied by a common bond--a care and personal connection we had towards the crucial issue that is breast cancer. And it was that bond that carried us from the start line to the finish line. Holley Yi Key Club Webmaster Midwood H.S. Key Club

Reminder of District Project #2: Make A Wish The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories, on average, every 38 minutes. They believe that a wish experience can be a game changer. That one belief guides them and inspires them to grant wishes that change the lives on children everywhere. In order to grant these wishes, the foundation needs funds that we Key Clubbers can help provide!

The Major Emphasis Program •  Key Club’s Major Emphasis “Children: Their Future, Our Focus” In 1946, Key Club International challenged all Key Clubs and members to focus energies on making an international impact. This program still is followed today through the Major Emphasis: “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” •  To fulfill the mission of the Major Emphasis, Key Club International serves children in many ways. Members participate in the hands-on service initiative, currently The Eliminate Project, and fundraise for Key Club International’s partner organizations: Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes and UNICEF.
