Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Dear Division Nine, As we close out summer 2014, I’d like to express my gratitude for a productive summer and one full of service. I can’t wait to dive into the school year and increase membership. I am excited to plan events like the Bowl-AThon and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The fall has a lot to bring and I can’t wait to uncover it all. School starts next Thursday and I’d like you all to have your first meeting for the school year as soon as possible, don’t be afraid to send an invite to myself and members of your sponsoring Kiwanis Club. I am excited to visit your clubs and meet members because with out them there is no Key Club. In this Newsletter, it contains service spotlights from clubs in Division 9, The Leadership Training Conference, The Eliminate Project, and more. Yours In Service, Clifford Young Lieutenant Governor New York District Division 9 cliffordyoung.ltg@nydkc.org

Executive Assistant’s Update Dear Division Nine, The month of July was our last chance to soak up as much sun as we could get until the school doors and teachers await our presence. Along with enjoying these last moments were tons of Key Club events that were all rewarding, to both the members and affiliates of the event. The Summer Divisional on August 23rd proved just how much fun Key Clubbers can have, especially when together. It was nice seeing all the different divisions together as one big group who all share a common ground for Key Club. School is approaching soon and as rough as it may sound for some, Key Club will definitely play a role this school year and remind you that helping others can make it all worth it! Have a wonderful school year Beavers! Yours In Service, Timmy Dhakaia Divisional Executive Assistant Division 9 New York District tdhakaia@gmail.com

Service Spotlight: CPC Walkathon

On August 3, 2014, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers gathered at Columbus Park for the CPC Walkathon. The CPC Walkathon is hosted by the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) every year. Some of the goals of the walkathon are to fundraise for and raise awareness to the increasing need for social services in NYC and to unite all Asian-American communities in NYC. As an AsianAmerican myself, I have participated in the walkathon each year in high school because I see the impact that the walkathon can have on the community. Before the walkathon began, Key Clubbers and other walkers were able to see some performances and hear multiple motivating speeches by the CPC. During the walkathon, we walked with the CPC and other organizations from Columbus Park, across the Brooklyn Bridge to Cadman Plaza, and back. Members interacted well by sticking together during the walkathon. We had a lot of fun by participating in this walkathon and I will definitely participate in future CPC Walkathons! Service Spotlight:

4th NYC Climate Justice Youth Summit The 4th NYC Climate Justice Youth Summit took place on August 6th and August 7th at the Urban Assembly School for Green Careers. During the summit, members were able to learn more about climate change and the increasing need to address issues related to climate change, such as minority communities that are impacted by climate change the most. The summit was not only educational, but lots of fun because there were performers and interactive ways of learning different effects of climate change. On both days, we were separated into different learning circles, where we were able to learn climate change impacts such as waterfront justice, frontline resiliency, and dig burn and dump economy. Members interacted well with other teenagers in their learning circles and worked together on the different activities of the learning circles. The best part of the summit was dinner - the food was amazing, especially the tacos on the second day of the summit. I had a lot of fun at the summit and it was a great experience because I was able to learn more about climate change. I will definitely participate in the People’s Climate March on September 21st and encourage others to as well! Service Spotlight: Neighborhood Clean-Up

On August 20, 2014, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers helped clean up Bensonhurst for another one of Assemblyman William Colton’s neighborhood cleanups. Assemblyman Colton began his “Speak Up & Clean Up” campaign in 2011 and has hosted multiple cleanups ever since. It is always a lot of fun to participate in the cleanups since I live in Bensonhurst and know that my efforts are actually impacting my own community. Just like the previous cleanup, Brooklyn Tech Key Club was assigned to clean up Bensonhurst Park. Although we were only able to clean up a portion of the park, I still had a lot of fun cleaning up with other members because of their diligent ways. Many of the Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers were eager to clean up the park and even refused to take a break. As a result, we returned to the meet-up location later than everyone else, but it was still worth it! I am glad that the members worked so hard together and interacted well because we managed to fill three bags of trash. I can’t wait to participate in Assemblyman Colton’s next neighborhood cleanup! Service Spotlight: Summer Streets

Summer Streets is an annual event held for three consecutive Saturdays in the month of August. It is a 7 mile route going from East 72nd street to the Brooklyn Bridge. During Summer Streets, people can do fun activities from playing miniature golf to learning how to ride a bike. Members of our key club went to volunteer and help make Summer Streets a fun and safe place to hang out. Since some streets weren’t closed for this event, we held stop and go signs at intersections and told people when to drive. This helped people stay safe during the event. We also received bags with goodies inside! Yours In Service, Erica Tlatelpa Club Bulletin Editor Edward R. Murrow High School Key Club

The Eliminate Project The Eliminate Project is a worldwide International campaign (brought together by Kiwanis International and UNICEF) to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. “This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.” –New York District Key Club Website. This is the last year of the project. So now, it is up to the club officers and members to push, support, and fundraise like crazy to help Kiwanis International and UNICEF reach its goal of $110 million. We already have over $55 million jointly.

The Goals of the International Dynamic Duo: President and Vice President

Hello, Key Clubbers! As your Key Club International President, I have four goals that I believe, once achieved, can make our organization and your club the best they can be. One of my top priorities is to reach our Eliminate goal as the project nears completion in 2015. Our $110 million goal will raise enough money to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus – a deadly disease that kills babies due to unclean birthing practices. By spreading awareness through constant communication and new ideas (such as personal fundraising pages), we will raise enough money to wipe this disease off the planet! Once people know that $1.80 can save a mother and her future babies, we will have more success. We just need to educate! My next goal is to create a better relationship between Kiwanis Clubs and Key Clubs. Through my time in Key Club, I’ve realized that Key Clubs are most successful when they have an involved and passionate sponsoring Kiwanis Club. However, Kiwanis Clubs keep dying off, and, therefore, Key Clubs are losing that vital connection. We call these Key Clubs “orphaned clubs.” I am working with Kiwanis International and their growth teams to create a program for orphaned Key Clubs, ensuring that all Key Clubs have a great sponsor. I also want to increase our brand awareness. We can increase this on the international level with more partnerships and developing of our current partners and sponsors. I also believe that giving resources to clubs for local PR and brand awareness will make clubs all over the world, including yours, the most effective. My last goal is to increase this year’s International Convention attendance in Indianapolis, Indiana, to 2,000 people. We will have an awesome concert, amazing people in attendance, great workshops to better your clubs, and a joint convention with the entire Kiwanis family to celebrate Kiwanis’ 100 years of service. Indianapolis is an exciting city and will not disappoint! With Chicago less than three hours away and exciting attractions, top theme parks, water parks, and museums nearby, it will be a convention to remember! As always, I would love to talk to you if you have questions or ideas! My email is below and on the Key Club International website (keyclub.org). My job is to be here for you, so please don’t hesitate to contact me! Yours in service, Maria Palazzolo Key Club International President ipmariapalazzolo@gmail.com

The Goals of the International Dynamic Duo: President and Vice President

Hello New York District Key Clubbers! I am honored to have been elected as your 2014-2015 Key Club International Vice President. I am currently a rising senior at Olympia High School in the Pacific Northwest District. I enjoyed meeting many of you at ICON this past month. For those of you that I did not get the opportunity to meet, I hope to see you at next year’s ICON in Indianapolis as we celebrate Kiwanis’s 100th year anniversary. One of my main goals as vice president is to go back to our roots and focus on service. I hope to accomplish this by finding new organizational partners that will promote service to all of our members. After meeting with the Growth and Development committee this past week, they have already begun this intensive task. Another one of my main goals is to connect with all of the branches of the K-Family. Having already met my Circle-K counterpart, I hope to work closely alongside her in order to bring Key Club and Circle-K closer. To close, thank you to every single one of you that voted for me at ICON this past July. I pledge to do my best in working with the rest of the International Board to bring our wonderful organization to new heights. Yours in Service, Kevin Zhang 2014-2015 International Vice President zhangkevin2015@gmail.com
