Caheragh N.S.

What a busy term it has been here in Caheragh National School. The highlights of course have been The Sacrament of Penance and The First Holy Communion. Congratulations to our 11 Communicants- Ruby, Eve, Caoilainn, Deirbhile, Jamie, Bobby, James, Micheál, Jack, Óisín and Bill, and a huge thank you to the Parent Associations of Caheragh N.S. and Dreeny N.S. as well as the Parish Council and the parents of 1st-3rd classes for all their help with the hospitality after the ceremony. We have had some fantastic successes within the school both academically and in sport. Our ladies were triumphant in Sciath na Scol once again this year, we had great achievements in Cork City Sports, Skibbereen Sports Day and our Senior Room successfully produced and sold their popular product ‘Bandables’ as part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. The Middle and Senior Rooms went on school tour to the Titanic Centre in Cobh & Fota Wildlife Park, while the Junior Room visited Bantry Fire Station, Bantry Garda Station and went to see The Secret Life of Pets 2 in the cinema. We had a multitude of visitors to the school such as Garda Brigid Hartnett, Skibbereen Fire Brigade, Toe Head Coastguard and Smiley Eiley, who spoke to us about dental hygiene. We took part in lots of sporting activities such as Gymnastics, Zumba, Kickboxing, Rowing, Football, Hurling, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, Céilí Dancing, Orienteering and Chess. We celebrated Shrove Tuesday by eating yummy pancakes and showed our support to Down Syndrome Ireland by holding an Odd Socks Day and an Ice-cream Day, where we had the difficult task of eating delicious ice-cream and toppings. We continued working towards our Green Flag, Health Promoting Flag, Active Flag and Excellence in Science and Maths Awards as well as taking part in the Credit Union Quiz and the Sherkin Island Marine Station Competition. Our Parent Association were busy as ever, organising two fantastic fundraising events for the school – A Coffee Morning and their ever popular Quiz Night. We thank them sincerely for their ongoing support. Last Friday, June 21st, we bid farewell to our 6th class students – Peter, Marie, Caitríona, Christina, Julia, Eleanor, Jamie, Steven, Katie and Niamh. We wish them all the best as they embark on the next stage of their academic career. We are all now looking forward to our summer break but we will be back again on August 28th, ready to kick off another busy school year. We hope you all have a fantastic and safe summer!

At Bright Beginnings Coffee Morning:

Scór na nÓg: Scόr na nÓg celebrated 50 years recently in the Celtic Ross in Rosscarbery with a superb night full of traditional entertainment. Special mention was made of Sonny O’Driscoll who gave of his time to Scór throughout the years.

Caheragh Vintage Threshing:

To date we have had three Flag Days yielding very satisfactory outcomes. This added to a successful bingo has provided a very pleasing start to our ‘Fundraising Season’. Much thanks is due to our willing and dedicated volunteers who join the committee in manning many sites in the various venues. The weather has been kind to us so far, hopefully our luck will hold out for the future Flag Days, which are; Sat June 29th – Kenmare; Sat July 6th – Midleton; Fri July 12th – Bandon, Fri July 19th – Carrigaline; Sat July 27th – Mallow; Thurs Aug 1st – Cork; Fri Aug 9th – Macroom, Fri Aug 16th – Clonakilty; Fri Aug 23rd – Castletownbere, Fri Aug 30th – Skibbereen Sat Sept 14th – Ballincollig. Volunteers, as always, will be welcome on any of these dates, particularly Cork where there are many sites to cover.

YOUNG-AT-HEART ( CAHERAGH ACTIVE RETIRED CLUB )

Although our numbers are small we continue to meet on most Thursdays when we enjoy a catch up char or chat and be creative, either way, it is, together with a cuppa very enjoyable. Last month we paid a visit to the Range on Little Island and made full use of the wonderful array of goods on sale, we called into Dunnes at Bishopstown and rounded off the day with a meal in the Viaduct. We would welcome new members, so do pop in on any Thursday for a chat.

Dromore N.S.

It certainly has been a wonderful term for all in Dromore National School and we thank the Good Lord for bringing us safely to the Summer holidays. The senior room have been very busy working on the Bantry Bay Port Project. The aim this year was to encourage others to stop littering our oceans and beaches. The children brought rubbish they collected from local beaches to school to create their project. They created an excellent piece which is on display in Bantry Tourist Office. The annual Sciath na Scol football blitz took place in Aughaville in May. The girls team won against Derrynacaheragh but unfortunately lost to Kilcoe. The boys won both of their matches and played Lisavaird in the final. Unfortunately they were unlucky on the day. The senior room also participated in a non-competitive tag rugby blitz organised by Bantry Bay RFC and Munster Rugby. Everyone had a great day. A local archaeologist called Aine Brosnan visited to speak about Irish monuments and artefacts. Pupils from 3rd to 6th went on a very interesting walk up to Dromore Hill. Everyone greatly enjoyed learning about local history. On Monday 20th May, the senior room pupils went to Dunmanway swimming pool to participate in a duathlon. There were eight schools there. Everyone did a 50m swim and a 400m run. At the finish line, there was music and a group photo. We had a visit from three firemen from Bantry Fire Station in May. Their names were Ian, Trevor and Ger. We learned a lot about fire safety. The junior classes also went on a very enjoyable visit to Bantry Garda and Fire Station. Since February children in the middle room have been learning how to knit. They have made bags, bracelets and necklaces. This month a lady called Stephanie came in to do felting with all the pupils. The senior room did tractors, animals and boats. The junior room made beautiful self-portraits. The middle room used needles to make a 3D piece that you can hang up. They put foam under the needles so that it wouldn’t damage anything. They used different coloured wool for the hair, belts, wings and dresses. It was great fun and all the pieces turned out lovely. On 13th May, we had a heritage visitor called Niamh. First, we learned about ostriches, geese, chickens and doves and their eggs. We all got to touch the eggs. Outside, we listened for sounds of birds or wind and other things. At the end we all looked through Niamh’s special birdwatching telescope. We all thought it was very interesting and had a great day. On 28th May, 3rd to 6th class pupils visited Schull Planetarium. Schull Planetarium is part of Schull Community College. It is the only planetarium of its kind in Ireland. At break time students from the college can look through the telescope and study the stars. Fionn Ferreira is a 6th year student at the college. He gave us a presentation about the stars, planets and constellations. After the presentation we went to the beach and had lunch and a paddle. We collected stones and shells from the beach. We really enjoyed the Planetarium and would recommend it for all. On Wednesday 5th June, the Senior Room went to Whiddy Island. Our tour guide for the day was Tim O’Leary and we learned so much from him. It was a most enjoyable day,one we will never forget. On Thursday 13th June, Christy and Jodie from Motus Learning came to talk to us about our emotions, mental health and social skills. The children from 3rd to 6th classes went on a school tour to Star Outdoors in Kenmare. Everyone had a fantastic day. On Thursday 6th June, Junior Infants to 2nd class went on their tour to Glenilen Farm and Top of the Rock in Drimoleague. Some of their favourite things were the hay bale maze, riding in the trailer and feeding the animals. They fed goats, dogs, ducks and lambs. They had a picnic at Top of the Rock. They made their own yogurts at Glenilen. They really enjoyed their day out. Our Active Week included lots of activities, including a Cycle Sense workshop, a fun sports day, obstacle courses, a football blitz, and gymnastics at Skibbereen Sports Centre. All the activities were very fun and challenging. We also received our Health Promoting Schools flag. In our school vegetable garden, we are growing carrots, lettuce, chives, potatoes, onions, turnips, spinach and strawberries. The lettuce is growing fast, so we have been picking it and enjoying it for our lunches. It is delicious! We bid farewell to five pupils, who have completed their primary school education at Dromore N.S. They are Ahsan, Connor, Darragh, Greg and Jack. We wish them every success in the future.
