CAHERAGH & DROMORE DEFIBRILLATOR GROUP

We are delighted to announce the purchase of two new replacement defibrillators. Sincere thanks to the Threshing Committee for their generous donation. Also we are most grateful for the continued community and public support. New boxes to house the defibrillators have been acquired. These boxes will ensure the safe storage of the machines. In conjunction with the local Gardai, the unlock code can now be obtained by contacting the local garda stations. Notices to this effect are on the outside of the boxes. The group will be arranging certificate training in the New Year. Practices continue on an on-going basis with dates of theses published in the Southern Star and through the parish notices. A fundraising coffee morning will be held at Caheragh Community Hall on Sunday 19th of January.

St Vincent de Paul Society.

The St Vincent de Paul Society, Skibbereen are very grateful for your very generous response to their annual church gate collection weekend of the 7th and 8th December. €1,159,00 was raised, all of which go towards helping families finding it difficult especially at Christmas time or any time through out the year. Please never hesitate to contact the society. Helpline No: 087 9182698 . Thank You.

Offertory Envelopes

I am very grateful to all who used the offertory envelopes in 2019 and I encourage you to do so in 2020. Please use them at Masses in Caheragh and Dromore and also if you are at Mass in churches which surround Caheragh Parish such as Bantry, Skibbereen, Drimoleague, Drinagh and Kilcoe. It would not be feasible to bring the envelopes to churches which are further away than those. Also, the parish can receive financial rebates from the Revenue Commissioners for offerings given to the parish by taxpayers. I urge anyone who pays tax to complete the form which is available in the porches of Caheragh and Dromore churches and return it as soon as possible. Fr. Daniel Pyburn P.P.

The Captain Francis O’Neill Memorial Co. Ltd.

The Captain Francis O’Neill Memorial Co recently welcomed a group of IrishAmerican genealogists from various States of America who travelled to the O’Neill monument in Tralibane. Most of their ancestors were born in Ireland. They were researching their roots. They had an enjoyable time in Tralibane. They were entertained by locals with traditional music, song, dance, local history & stories. The Captain O’Neill Co had a good year. On Friday June 21st, the O’Neill Co held a mid-summer open air dance at the O’Neill Monument. The weather was ideal for the dance and all had a most enjoyable time until midnight with music by Tim Joe & Rose. On Sunday September 8th, the annual O’Neill walk led by Timmy McCarthy took Group of Genealogists from USA at Tralibane place from Tralibane Bridge via O’Neill’s birth place ending up at the O’Neill Monument. Refreshments were served there compliments of Alan & Valarie Kingston, Glenilen Farm. Our thanks to all the traditional Irish musicians who played music at Tralibane Bridge and all the way to the Monument and after the walk at the O’Neill Monument. Unfortunately the open-air platform dancing was not held owing to the inclement weather. Thanks to Vincie Crowley for arranging transport for the musicians from the Bridge to the Monument. Thanks to Cremin Coaches for transport to & from Bantry to accommodate the patrons. Thanks to Bantry Comhaltas for their music. A special thanks to all musicians who played on the day and to all who attended our Ceilis and events during 2019. The next event on the O’Neill calendar is a Ceili on Friday January 3rd in Caheragh Hall. Music by Tim Joe & Ann.

Caheragh Folk Group

The Folk group are busy preparing for Christmas Eve Mass. As in previous years we will sing a selection of Carols before Mass starting at 6pm in candle light. We hope you will all sing along with us. Recently we entered the true meaning of Christmas by spending a few hours singing and praying with the patients in St. Joseph’s ward in Bantry Hospital. This giving of ourselves is thoroughly enjoyed by the patients and of course the group. We are always humbled at the welcome we receive from the nurses, carers and patients themselves. During the five weeks of Lent we lead the Taize prayers nights in Myross Wood in preparation for the Easter Season. Rev. John Ardis and Carole Pound have invited us to come and sing in St Mary’s Church at an evening of Christmas Carols on Sunday 29th December at 6pm. We look forward to this Ecumenical service. Earlier this year we said goodbye to David and Marie Sprott. We are very grateful to them for all the years they provided us with music. We wish them well in their new beginnings in Ballincollig. God never closes one door without opening another, all we can say is that our search and prayers for a musician was granted on the double when Norman Collins joined the group. As you know from our fortnightly Masses Norman plays both guitar and Piano. We thank Norman for sharing his talents and his dedication to the group. We also welcome two new singers Anne Roberts and Claire O’Sullivan who joined us recently. If anyone who enjoy singing and would like to join us at any stage you would be more than welcome, we sing on the first Sunday of every month in Caheragh and every third Saturday in Dromore. We wish you all a very Blessed Christmas.

Caheragh Threshing Fund Tops €80,000 in 2019 Caheragh Threshing Committee recently presented €80,000, the highest figure in its 21 year history to Breakthrough Cancer Research and local Community Groups: Front: L to R: Len Gregory, Professor Roisin Connolly UCC and Breakthrough Cancer Research, John Scully Treasurer; DJ Dinneen, Chairperson, Pat Gregory PRO; Kathleen Kirby Secretary & Mary Cadogan, Assistant Secretary. Centre: L to R: Marie O’Mahony, Orla Dolan, Margaret O’Mahony, Tim O’Sullivan, Pat Joe Hourihane, Eileen Scully, Helen Collins, Tim McCarthy, Neasa Cotter & Sandra Walsh. Back: L. to R: Fachtna Whooley, Sean O’Sullivan, Sean Collins, and Dolores O’Donovan. On Saturday Nov 30th a stranger driving through Caheragh could assume, and rightly so, that given the volume of cars in the Traveller’s Rest Car Park that an event was taking place. This event was a celebration of the fundraising year by the Threshing Committee, ably assisted by their volunteers, supporters and friends, all gathered to enjoy the fruits of their labours and the disbursement of the magnificent sum of €80,000. The main beneficiary was Breakthrough Cancer Research and this year Professor Roisin Connolly, recently appointed to the Professor Gerry O’Sullivan chair, was present to receive the cheque. She thanked the fundraisers for their efforts, while expressing ‘amazement’ at the result. She went on to bring us up to date on the work in the Cancer Research Centre including the present trials and ongoing results in treating various cancers. As a packed hall listened attentively to her, each one must have felt pride in their efforts, however big or small. We wish her every success in her new role. The evening continued with music by Catriona. Can we improve on this year? That’s a challenge. Many thanks once again to anyone who helped in any way in 2019! Happy Christmas and New Year to all.

Caheragh National School

It has been a very busy first term here in Caheragh N.S. We welcomed 9 Junior Infants to our school – Gerard, Isabel, Gabriele, Conor, Sean-Daniel, Chloe, Joseph, Vivienne and Robbie. Second to Sixth class had swimming lessons in Dunmanway and learned tin whistle with Tom O’Sullivan and the whole school had hurling lessons with Tony Walsh. Our wonderful Parent Association held their Flag Day raising €1,433.55 for the school back in September. This money, paired with the money we received as a beneficiary of the Wild Atlantic Mizen Charity Cycle will go towards the repair of the prefab roofs. We are continuing our work in the Active Schools Programme, The Green Flag Our new Junior Infants Initiative, The Health Promoting School Programme and the Amber Flag as well as taking part in the Food Dudes Programme which encourages the children to eat more fruit and vegetables. Four of our Senior Room students, Teagan, Laura, Neil and Emma took part in the Annual School’s Library Quiz and did themselves and their school very proud. It is a big year for Sacraments in Caheragh N.S. this year. Our eight second class pupils had their Enrolment Ceremony in November and will receive their First Confession and First Holy Communion in February and May respectively. We will also have sixteen pupils making their Confirmation in March. Caheragh N.S. elected a new Board of Management this November. The Ilen Valley Gun Club and Game Protection Association members 50th Anniversary.

The Club was formed on the 13th November 1969. The territories of the Club were all in and around the Ilen River, hence its name. The founding members were The Rev Fr John Cotter R.I.P., Paddy Keane, Vincie Keane, Meenies, Johnny Forbes RIP, George Forbes, Kealanine, Timmy McCarthy, Dromusta, and Sean Collins, West End. In the early days of the Clubs formation, setting up boundaries with neighbouring Clubs was an important task. Trips to Cork City were also made by members to meetings with the Cork Federation which the Club is affiliated to. These meetings helped to get the Club established and set a platform. Members who attended these meetings included Rev Fr John Cotter RIP, Danny Andrew McCarthy RIP Dromusta Andrew McCarthy RIP Knockgorm and Timmy McCarthy. All 40 current members have a keen interest in bird preservation and building habitats for birds such as duck and grey partridge. Perhaps the greatest addition in recent years has been the completion of a wild duck pond adjacent to the walkway at the Top of the Rock. The Club is currently involved in the rearing of grey partridge. Credit is due to Diarmuid O' Neill and family who are involved in the rearing of these birds. The Club received a Club of the year Award in 2015 in which seventy six Clubs entered. Members must be thanked for their contribution. The Club is also very grateful for its good relations with the farmers and landowners of the Parishes of Caheragh and Drimoleague. The current Officers are; President : Mr Sean Collins West End . Chairman : James McCarthy Knockgorm. Secretary : Richard Collins Clashduve Treasurer : Patrick O'Connor Dreeney.

Dreeny National School It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and its party time, Christmas holidays are nearly here. We are all in a festive mood and looking forward to the well earned break. Here’s just a little flavour of the highlights from September to now. Halloween; Children were looking forward to Halloween and got into the spooky spirit by creating some amazing art to decorate the school. The children made a Scarecrow Classroom Scene with the help of the Parents Association and entered it into the Leap Scarecrow Festival. Dreeny NS won first prize in the schools category so well done to all. Baking; The children were learning about instructional Our Christmas play; “You’re the one” writing and enjoyed some baking. They made some delicious shortbread treats while learning how to weigh and measure. It went down a real treat. Caheragh Threshing; Thank you to the children for leading the parade at the Caheragh Threshing and Vintage day and to the parents who volunteered at the various stalls. This is a wonderful achievement by the Caheragh Parish Community. Maths Week; Dreeny participated in Maths Week in October by doing lots of different fun activities. The boys and girls put on their maths eyes and enjoyed a maths trail in the school grounds. They had great fun looking at the maths in their local environment. Novembers Science Week; brought a different kind of fun as the children really enjoyed becoming junior scientists for the week. At the end of the week, they held a very successful Science Fair with different stations to visit and experiment at!! 5th/6th class made homemade pizza for everyone to enjoy afterwards – after all baking is also a science. Active Flag; Dreeny renewed their Active Flag Status last academic year and were awarded their flag this October. This is a fantastic achievement for a small school and it is a credit to the children, Ms. Maher and Ms Luttrell. Dreeny Abú. In keeping with Active Flag the children completed had 6 weeks of Swimming in Dunmanway and on Mondays and they are currently really enjoying the outdoors hail, rain or shine, perfecting their hurling skills with Tony Walsh. Library Quiz Team; Dreeny had a team in the annual Skibbereen Library Quiz. We were very proud of their performance. Music; The children have been learning tin whistle this term with Martina French. They are learning quickly and it is lovely to hear music playing in the school. Drama; Drama lessons began in October with Ms. Scannell and all thoroughly enjoyed expressing themselves through fun activities. The much anticipated Christmas play took place in the Parish Hall on Wednesday 12th December a performance of “You’re the one” written by Nora Scannell. Well done to all. All proceeds on the night went to a charity chosen by the children – Lisheen’s Our Baking House. A total of €700 was raised – a fantastic outcome to an amazing night of drama. Giving at Christmas; Generosity is the true meaning of Christmas; a few weeks back the children presented 14 presents for the children in poorer parts of the world to the Operation Christmas Child shoe box appeal and recently presented an amazing hamper to the SVP food collection.

Active Flag Award Day

Young at Heart Club (Caheragh Active Retired Group).

Our numbers have declined but the ‘faithful few’ still enjoy our Thursday afternoons meet for the exchange of news and a cuppa. We manage to make occasional trips, having visited Willie Pa’s for an afternoon meal which proved excellent in catering for various tastes and needs. We also visited Mealagh Valley Community Hall for a very pleasant afternoon, starting with Mass, followed by a tasty meal provided by Jimmy, - probably known by many as ‘The Chef from Drimoleague’, while Pat O’Brien rounded off the afternoon with music for dancing. The final event is the Christmas Lunch for active retired on December 11th in the West Cork Hotel, where if previous occasions are anything to go by will be a very enjoyable festive occasion, with a three course dinner followed by dancing to the Marina Band. Finally we wish all a truly Happy and Wonderful Christmas and a Holy, Healthy and Happy New Year.

Dromore National School

We welcome our new Junior Infants to Dromore N.S.. Our new students include Killian, Ben, Odhran, Dan, Danny, Cadhla, Katelyn, Moira, Penny and Olivia. We hope they enjoy their time here and they are a wonderful addition to the school. On 26th September the girls who won the u12 All Ireland Aldi Community Games Football visited Dromore N.S. They were accompanied by their trainers Ger Carey and Miriam Forbes. They played against Carlow in the final on the 18th August and won by 13 points. They won the Cup and each received a gold medal. It was enjoyable to go to the different schools and they got a lovely reception from all. The u12 Caheragh team played in the West Cork Final against St Colums on 31 August in Castlehaven, there Middle room art were 8 girls from our school on the team. We continued to do well in the league but were beaten in the county semi-final. This year was the first year that Caheragh u12s have ever won a West Cork final. Caheragh u10 girls won the Eilish Collins Memorial Cup on 7th September beating a strong Castlehaven side. On Friday 4th October the u12 boys had a playoff final against Ahán Gaels in Castletownkinneigh. We won by 15 points. We had a brilliant year and our coaches Sam O’Sullivan, Bernard O’Donovan and William Flynn were very pleased with us. We really enjoyed Science Week in school. We did a number of experiments. We put a hard boiled egg into a glass of vinegar and kept it on the windowsill for the week to see what happened. We also had a hard boiled egg in a glass of water to see if there were any differences between the 2 glasses. The egg in water stayed the same but the egg in the vinegar had little bubbles around the shell and bits fell off over the week. In groups we made cars using our own designs and cardboard for wheels and straws for axels. We used a balloon and straw to power our cars to make them ready to race. This year we took part in the Skibbereen Library Quiz. John, Daniel, Darragh and Maria made up the team. It was held in Skibbereen Library, one day after school. There were lots of school teams present. Some of the questions were local and some were based on current news. I really enjoyed the experience. In November all the children brought in shoeboxes they had prepared over midterm. We put in toys and other small gifts for people that are not as lucky as we are. These were collected by Team Hope and will be given out to lots of boys and girls around the world so that they will have a nice present for Christmas.

Our Junior Infants. On 27th October we had a great visit form Brendan Murphy, a local beekeeper. He is actually a past pupil of Dromore N.S. He explained the different jobs of the different bees – the queen, the worker and the drone. He showed us his extracting machine. It spins around to get the honey out of the comb. He let everybody taste the honey and he gave us some jars of honey and a box of honeycomb. We all got to taste some of the honey. We are grateful to him for giving up his free time to come and visit us – it was so interesting! Second class had their enrolment Mass on 16th November, where they put their names forward for receiving Sacraments this year. They took part in the prayers of the faithful and bringing up the offertory gifts, accompanied by the Senior room playing an instrumental piece. First to sixth class sang in the choir. They are really looking forward to their First Communion Mass on 10th May. At the start of December Sineád from CONCERN charity came to our school to talk about the countries that they work in, what they do there and their work with refugees. She showed us the U.N. Global goals they want to achieve by 2030. She talked to us about public speaking and how it could resolve a lot of things instead of resorting to war. We had a walking debate and the topic was ‘Which is better - films or books?’. We really enjoyed our session with Sineád and would love if she could visit again. The school had a recent visitor Mr Con McCarthy, the Diocesan Religion Inspector. He has been coming for a number of years and we always like to see him visiting the school. He went into every classroom and caught up with all the children and he was so impressed with all of us that he gave us no homework for the night! What a treat! Every year we collect food for St Vincent de Paul Society in Skibbereen. There is always a great response from us in Dromore. We bring in non-perishable foods. It is a lovely way to help families that are not as fortunate as we are, at this time. The food is collected and packed into hampers which will be distributed to families in the Skibbereen area. We have completed lots of Christmas Art all over the school. The Juniors made their own stables, the middle room did pictures of their favourite reindeer. The Senior room made cards for residents of the Drimoleague and Bantry nursing home. We have made stars and angels from clothes pegs, and used the springs to make smaller stars! We have made small presents and more cards for families and friends. We will be hanging some of these decorations on the Christmas tree in Dromore church and the rest we will take home for our own trees. On 12th December Junior Infants to Second Class attend a play called ‘Santa’s Fairytale Christmas’ in Skibbereen Town Hall. The story was so entertaining and we sang lots of Christmas songs. We had great seats and could see all the action, even the Wicket Witch. As a special reward for being so good Santa wanted them to have no homework that night. They really enjoyed the show! We celebrated our Christmas Mass on 18th of December, followed by Confession. It is a lovely way to end the year 2019 and to celebrate the end of the term. We sang lovely hymns and really got into the spirit of Christmas. One thing we all enjoy doing at Christmas is visiting the nursing homes to sing some Christmas carols. 3rd to 6th classes went to visit both Fairfield Nursing Home in Drimoleague and Deerpark Nursing Home in Bantry. We sang some carols and said some prayers and poems. We also played some tunes on our instruments. It is lovely to visit the residents and spread some Christmas cheer. Nollaig Shona Daoibh! Caheragh & District Vintage Club

Caheragh & District Vintage Club had a very busy and successful year. The first outing of the year took place on the 7th of April seeing large numbers of vintage, classic & modern - cars, tractors, motorbikes & lorries run in aid of Friends of Skibbereen Hospital. The day started off at The Coachman's Inn, Bauraville driving through quiet rural roads to the finish at The Traveller's Rest in Caheragh. It was a really enjoyable event that raised over €5,500 for a great cause. The Club's second run of the year took place on the 8th of September in aid of the Aisling Tanner Fund. This run was again for vintage, classic & modern - cars, tractors, motorbikes & lorries and was a longer run. This run again starting at the Coachman's Inn as drivers and spectators were treated to tea and scones before heading towards the Coast to the first stop at Minihan's Bar, Lisheen. The weather may have got a bit damp but not even this could dampen the spirits as soup and sandwiches were dished out to warm everyone up. As the run turned for home the excitement began to build as a BBQ and music awaited everyone back at the finish at The Traverer's Rest. The day and evening was a massive success seeing €11,420 raised for the Aisling Tanner Fund. This years activities are not finished yet as a Run has been organised for the Sunday the 29th of December, sign-up at 12noon from The Traveller's Rest, all in aid of Tadhg MacCarthaigh Ladies GAA. Please keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more information. Thank you to all supporters for their continuing support.
