Offertory Envelopes

I am very grateful to all who used the offertory envelopes in 2017 and I encourage you to do so in 2018. Please use them at Masses in Caheragh and Dromore and also if you are at Mass in churches which surround Caheragh Parish such as Bantry, Skibbereen, Drimoleague, Drinagh and Kilcoe. It would not be feasible to bring the envelopes to churches which are further away than those. Also, the parish can receive financial rebates from the Revenue Commissioners for offerings given to the parish by taxpayers. I urge anyone who pays tax to complete the form which is available in the porches of Caheragh and Dromore churches and return it as soon as possible. Fr. Daniel Pyburn P.P.

Caheragh Community Alert — Text Alert

Our group has had a very busy year as we have installed over 30 personal alarms for older folk in our parish. An interesting aside with the alarms was that we learned that a different type of alarm is required where the house phone is provided by satellite broadband. The group TEXT ALERT is operating successfully and plans are now at an advanced stage to erect new text alert signs around the parish. Our plan is to erect 17 signs in total.

Caheragh Vintage Threshing Committee.

On Saturday December 2nd a group of committee members, volunteer helpers and supporters gathered in the Traveller’s Rest to celebrate a very successful fundraising year. The culmination of the year’s activities was the Presentation of donations to the beneficiaries, the main one being the Cork Cancer Research Centre, also local charities. Dr. Soden who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Research Centre gave a very informative talk on the work of the Centre, charting the progress made and the benefits to patients currently being treated. He closed his speech with a very emotional statement. ‘It all started here.’ After the presentation to and thanks received from local charities, the Chairman D.J. Dinneen extended warm thanks to committee members for their continuing hard work and commitment, and the volunteers and supporters without whom the fundraising would not achieve the success it enjoys. The evening continued with refreshments followed by music by ‘One for the Road’. At the end of the evening, people went home rejuvenated by the successful evening and hopes for an even greater result in 2018. We wish all a Happy and Holy Christmas and a New Year filled with good health, and joy in all you undertake.

The Captain Francis O’Neill Co.

The Captain Francis O’Neill Co. had a successful year. They had good attendance at all the events that were held. The only event that didn’t take place was the Pattern Day Open Air Dancing at the O’Neill Monument. It was cancelled owing to the inclement weather on the day. The Annual O’Neill Walk was held on the day. Starting at Tralibane Bridge where the gathering of the traditional musicians took place. O’Neills tunes were played and echoed all over the Valley. Cecilia Wilcox gave an intriguing account of the folklore attached to the place known as ‘The Murdering Glen’. Timmy McCarthy led the historical walk from the bridge to the O’Neill monument for an afternoon of music song and dance. Our thanks to Vincie Crowley and all traditional musicians and the Bantry Comhaltas who took part in the entertainment on the day. Our sympathy goes to the family of Mary Kate O Sullivan of Gortnascreena, one of our directors who passed away early in the year. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dilis. Scor na nOg and Scor na bPĂĄistĂ.

On the 5th of November Caheragh had the local round of the Scor na nOg and the Scor Na bPaisti in the hall in Caheragh. It was very well attended by pupils from Caheragh, Dreeny and Dromore Schools and kids within the Parish. We had lots of entries to all categories within Scor which in itself was lovely to see and made a very entertaining afternoon for all involved. Scor competitions have always made Caheragh stand out amongst other competitors as a very competitive group in all areas. A few years ago we got a special award for best competing club in the County. This is truly something that the Tadgh MacCarthaigh club should be proud of, an award to try and live up to going forward. Not only that but last year reaching the all Ireland was huge with the play that is encrypted on peoples minds ever since. This year what was very noticeable with some of the younger kids is the difference a year can make in their talent and their confidence to perform. Their confidence was admirable. This year we had two judges Eilish and Fidelma Hurley from Skibbereen we thank them for their time and commend them for their detailed comments on each performances. We would like to give a special thank you to Teddy O Regan and Padraig O Driscoll who over the years have showed us great loyalty, never turn us down, and are always so willing to help. The Scor na nOg Carbery finals were held on Sunday the 12 of November in Rossmore. Unfortunately not everyone got placed. It was commented on the day by Carbery Sec that we were the only club in the Carbery division that competed in all of the 7 categories. The figure dancers of Mairead Crowley, Aoife Kingston, Claire Hegarty, Sinead O Donovan, Meave Kingston, Helena Collins, Amy and Clodagh McKennedy came first. We also commend Katie Kingston from Dreeny school who was placed second in the overall competition with her recitation and to the play who also came second. The figure group went on to the Scor Na Nog County Final in Ovens on Saturday the 2nd of December and did us so proud and were placed second. Well done to all. The Scor quiz team of Brian MacCarthy, Eugene Daly, Helena Collins, and sub Oisin Daly will travel to Bishopstown on Friday January the 12th to take part in the County final we wish them the very best. Caheragh ABU. Many thanks to all who helped with our local round of Scor. A lot of time and effort goes into preparing for the competitions and a big thank you to the parents and to the mentors who helped the children along the way. The next round of the Scor na Bpaisti will be the semi finals for the Carbery division and the Tadgh MacCarthaigh club will be represented either on the 21st or 28th of January times and venues to be confirmed nearer the time. We wish all the kids well and hope they enjoy the next stage of the competition.

Scor na nOg and Scor na bPáistí….. continued

Folk Group. The Folk group are busy preparing for Christmas Eve Mass. As in previous years we will sing a selection of Carols before Mass starting at 6pm in candle light. We hope you will all sing along with us. Recently we went out to our friends on Sherkin Island to sing at Mass for them. We are humbled at the welcome we receive each year God Bless the Faith of their small congregation. It is an honour for us to lead the singing at the Lenten Taize nights in Myross Wood each year in preparation for the Easter Season. This year we missed Fr Brendan Hanley RIP but we are sure he was with us in Spirit. Our gratitude to Fr Nick, Fr Michael and Fr Dan for their welcome always. Back in our parish we sing on the first Sunday of every month and the third Saturday in Dromore. If anyone would like to join us at any stage you would be very welcome. We wish you all a very Blessed Christmas.

Tadhg MacCarthaigh Ladies

The Caheragh ladies club have enjoyed another successful year with the continuing development of the underage girls reaping rewards, this year in the form of U. 16 West Cork champions. The club now boasts, U. 10, U. 12, U. 14, U.16 and junior ladies teams with ongoing discussions regarding an U. 21 team. The junior ladies capped off a fantastic year for the club by once again becoming Junior County Champions. 2018 will mark the 10 year anniversary of the ladies club and in that timeframe the junior ladies have appeared in four county finals, winning two in addition to eight West Cork finals, winning four. Not a bad achievement for a small club. Of course none of this would be achieved without the tireless endeavours of the club officers, trainers, players and supporters. Date for the Diary – The ladies hold their annual fundraising table quiz on Friday, 29th December in The Coachman’s Inn at 8p.m. All are welcome.

Young at Heart Club (Caheragh Active Retired Group). We have had a very quiet period, our meetings in general being devoted to ‘tea and natter’. Our venue is St. Mary’s Hall, which, at the moment is in the process of a new floor. When completed we hope to hold an ‘Open Day’ which we hope will attract new members. We thoroughly enjoyed a festive afternoon of dinner and dancing in the West Cork Hotel on Tuesday December 5th and look forward to a trip to Griffin’s Garden Centre in Dripsey to experience the magical Christmas Shop (you are never too old to enjoy Christmas magic!) and enjoy a meal in the restaurant. Our final meet of the year will be on December 21st where we hope to enjoy our own Yuletide festivities. We wish you all a Happy and Holy Christmas and hope your New Year brings all you hope for.

Tadgh MacCĂĄrthaigh GAA News. The curtain finally came down on the 2017 playing Season on Sunday 3rd Dec when the under 16 footballers eventually got to play their County Championship semi-final against Ballinora in Togher. Having played the Rebel Og West final against Ilen Rovers on 7th Oct, the wait of eight weeks certainly did not help the team and they were rusty in the early stages conceding a goal and going six points in arrears. However they fought back strongly and drew level in the second half. A second Ballinora goal finally put the game out of reach and they were beaten on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-12. The team had a great year overall, lifting the West title and only losing to a strong Ballinora team in the Semi-final. Great credit is due to all the players and mentors who worked so hard during such a long season. Overall the underage club had a very good year fielding teams in all ages from under 6 up to under 18 with large numbers turning out. As well as the under 16 victory the under 12 team also won the shield final after a cracking game with Adrigole. At adult level, while there was disappointment with the Junior A team losing to Oliver Plunketts in the Championship quarter final, however they did get a measure of revenge in the Division 2 league final when they beat the same opposition on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-9 to be promoted to division 1 as Champions. Congratulations also to junior player Micheal O Donovan who won the Union Hall Superstars Competition on the August Bank Holiday weekend and in the process won â‚Ź5,000 worth of Masita sports gear for the club. On the inter County front the O Driscoll brothers Colm , Kevin and Brian continued to represent the club on the Cork Senior football team and with a new manager in place for 2018 it is hoped there will be more success. Finally, as the festive season approaches, the club would like to wish all players, mentors and supporters a very Happy Christmas and a healthy 2018.
