Tadgh MacCárthaigh GAA News. The 2017 season is well under way, with most teams having played a number of league matches. The Junior A team has beaten Goleen and Dohenys in the Carbery –Beara league while they drew with St. Oliver Plunketts. In the County league they have beaten St.Mary’s away while they had an excellent home win against Boherbue on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-7. Their first round Championship game against Ilen Rovers is fixed for Sat 6th May in Bantry. The Under 21 footballers, fielding a very young team were beaten in the first round of the Championship on St.Patrick’s day by a strong St.James team 3-9 to 2-7, however they played Goleen in the Plate competition and recorded a 2-13 to 2-10 victory to qualify for the final against Muintir Bhaire. Under 12s footballers played well and won their first challenge game against Ilen Rovers last Friday evening. The under 10 footballers were narrowly defeated away to Ballinscarthy while the under 11s had two tough matches against Adrigole and Castlehaven where they showed great potential despite losing. Cork: Colm, Kevin and Brian O Driscoll were all part of the Cork Senior football panel during the recent division two league Campaign where Cork had very mixed results which saw them finish in fourth place and miss out on promotion. They play Waterford in the Munster Championship on the last weekend in May.

Caheragh Vintage Threshing: At the Travellers Rest on Tuesday night the 28th March the Committee held their A.G.M. While celebrating the amazing fact that over a million Euros has been raised since its inception, there was grave concern about the future. The Committee is small in number and the workload badly need an injection of volunteers to keep it viable. The work is not onerous, most meetings and flag days take place between May and September, with the Threshing Day in October. Because the main focus of the Committee activity benefits Cancer Breakthrough, there is a great feeling of pride in the Committee for every cent raised. If you do decide to become a Committee member you will be welcomed – always remember, cancer can strike any one of us, the question so; what can you do? Cancer research relies on funding from all of us! You may contact any of the Committee; D.J. Dineen, Timmy O’Sullivan, K. Kirby, T. Keohane, J. Scully, C Keohane, P. Gregory, S. Collins, T. The Ilen Valley Gun Club…....from the parishes of Caheragh and Drimoleague in west Cork was formed in 1969. The club has always been very supportive of conservation. Tree planting and bird release programmes are always of huge importance to the organization. In recent years the club has released partridge. In February 2015 it was decided to build a duck pond. The perfect habitat was formed around it with the setting of game crop and trees which were all purchased through the Cork Federation. This pond and surroundings is on six acres of land adjacent to the Drimoleague walkways. It is set in a unique place which promotes the club and shows what work is in progress with the help of the Cork Federation. The club also set a goal in 2011 to try and win the Cork federation club of the year award. All the hard work paid off, with the club winning the 2015 Club of the year award. This was a great boost the club. It has energized existing members and encouraged new members. There are still five founding members active in the club. The Ilen Valley Gun club and game protection association would like to thank the farmers of Caheragh and Drimoleague for letting the club members shoot their lands. For this the club is most grateful. The club would like to wish all members a happy Christmas and New Year. Any farmer with problems with vermin, please contact one of our members. All Club members are insured by the NARGC. Above our members in a recent photo. Special mention for Shannon McCarthy pictured here with her dad Paul

Tadgh MacCárthaigh - SCÓR News. In February our Novelty play in the Scór na nÓg went to the All Ireland in Belfast. We were delighted to have a full coach of supporters going to support the talented group. A spectacular weekend of entertainment was given by all the participants. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be our year. The talented group was made up of Oisin, Eugene, and Katie Daly, Meave and Rory Kingston, Catriona Keohane, Timothy Farrell, and Louise Keohane. The play was called A Dream For Skibbereen. Looking around on the night in the Waterfront Theatre in Belfast there was many a teary eye watching such a emotionally touching Play. It truly depicted how hard life was for many people in Ireland in the Famine times. The Caheragh Scór committee would like to thank the schools in Caheragh for the wonderful send off and for all the supports who turned out when we arrived back in Caheragh. This year we went about trying to revive the Scór Sinsear. We had a quiz team who went to Ovens on the 17th of February. The team was made up of Celeste Shorten, Micheal Kingston, Kenneth Kingston and Dan McCarthy. We also participated in the Scor Sinsear Solo Singing represent by Micheal Crowley and recitation represented by Padraig O’Driscoll. Padraig went on to County Final in Milstreet with his recitation. Well Done to all who participated. For anyone interested we hope to enter more of the categories such as Ballad group and Set Dancing next year!

The West Cork Finals of the Scór na bPasti took place in Ballydehob on Sunday the 5th of February, Caheragh were represented in seven events, and all the participants performed really well. The standard of competition was exceptional, and all our representatives can be very proud of their performance. Amy McKennedy came first in the solo Dancing, as did Meave Kingston in the Sean Nos dancing. There was second placing for Caitriona Keohane in the recitation, the Rince Foirne dancers, and the play. Amy and Meave progressed to the County semi finals in Ovens held on the 25th of March but unfortunately no luck this time. We are blessed to have a wide range of talent in the Parish. Some of the parents in Dreeny School recently, on St. Patrick’s day, organised a good old scriocht { traditional Irish storytelling poetry and singing} in the Coachman’s Pub. It was a great opportunity for neighbours and friends to enjoy a night rich in culture. For anyone interested they hope to make this a regular event with everyone welcome.

Active Retired, Mass & Celebration. The Pastoral Council wish to hold a special mass to celebrate our active retired and appreciate the older people who play such a huge role in our parish and our area. A parishioner brought to the attention of the pastoral council there appeared to be a discrepancy in our parish and religious celebrations for older members of the parish. To rectify this issue it was decided that instead of the annual Christmas party for older people, this year we would hold a special mass on Sunday April 23rd at 11:15am with the emphasis on including older people to show our respect and appreciation for them in our parish . After this mass there will be refreshments and music in the Travellers Rest. Young-at-Heart Club. Our post-Christmas meetings were somewhat delayed due to inclement weather conditions. However, since recovering we have had a very busy period. The window boxes in our meeting place – St. Marys’ Hall, have been replanted and now look bright and pleasing, a colourful welcome to Spring. We enjoyed lunch at Donemark West Restaurant where good food, coupled with excellent service, ensured a very pleasant afternoon for all. An invitation to the Mealagh Valley Community for dinner and entertainment led us through stunning scenery to enjoy again a pleasant afternoon. Last week a Tea Dance in the West Lodge, if, where all of us did not dance, we tapped out the rhythm with our feet, while our table won four raffle prizes. Later on in Spring a trip to Griffins Garden Centre is planned. Truly we are an ‘Active Retired Group’ small in number, but ‘small is beautiful’.
