Captain Francis O’Neill Co.

The Captain Francis O’Neill Co. took part in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Bantry this year. They were remembering two of Caheragh’s most famous parishioners; Captain Francis O’Neill and Patrick “Rocky Mountain” O’Brien. They were both born in 1848 and were school pals in Dromore Boys School. Capt. O’Neill travelled the world and ended up as Chief of the Police in Chicago. The 100th anniversary of Rocky Mountain’s death was in February of this year. Like Capt. O’Neil he too sailed by ship to America and travelled through South and Central America. He spent some time as a game hunter in the Rocky Mountains. It was here he got nick name “Rocky Mountain”. He was a lifelong friend of O’ Donovan Rossa and they were neighbors in Brooklyn N.Y. Like O’Neill who was instrumental in the revival of Irish music and has written and published many books on Irish Music and Dance tunes. O’Brien has written and published a book called Birth and Adoption which tells of his travels to different parts of the world and has written poems about places in West Cork. “Rocky Mountain” visited Caheragh Parish in the early 1900’s. He made a generous donation to Fr.O’Hea which was put towards the building of the Belfry and entrance gates to St. Mary’s Parish Church at Killenleigh. He arranged for a bell to come from New York and be erected in the new Belfry. This bell was on the missing list for some time and is now back in the Belfry once more and is rung on the occasion of burials in the grave yard in Killenleigh.

ARE YOU ON THE REGISTER OF VOTERS?

Finbarr O’Shea and all other field workers were informed after the Presidential Election that they were receiving their P45. In future, people need to apply for a vote themselves. This can be done by downloading the forms from the Franchise Section of the Cork County Council website, or contact the Register of Electors Services at 021-4285266 to obtain forms by post. This applies to people who have changed address, got married etc. A family member can do likewise where there has been a death in the family. It also applies to people who have moved into Drimoleague and most of the Caheragh and Dromore areas. I would like to thank everyone for their help and kindness to me during my term. I can always be contacted at 028 31402 if you need any assistance. Please note we have European Elections, County Council Elections and a Referendum at the end of May, so apply for your vote immediately. To verify that you have a vote, there are copies of The Voter’s Register which may be viewed by everyone in Drimoleague Post Office and Garda Station. Thanks again, Finbarr

The Hope Foundation. by Mark Hegarty On the 22nd of March, two friends and I, Shane Collins and Grace Roberts went out to Kolkata, India with The Hope Foundation. We each had to raise €2,400 before we could go. We reached that goal and went out to see what projects the money went to. The money went to Hope homes, Hope hospitals and over 60 more projects Hope has to offer. Of course all of this money would not have been raised without the generosity of the community. I would like to thank everyone who supported my coffee morning and everyone who donated afterwards also those who bought the Hope chocolates or helped us in any way. It was an amazing experience and we saw a lot of extreme poverty, it was also a learning experience. Mark Hegarty

CAHERAGH PARISH ACCOUNTS 2018

U10 Hurling BlitzÂ

CHARITY REBATE

The parish can receive financial rebates from the Revenue Commissioners for offerings given to the parish by taxpayers. Last year the Parish received over â‚Ź5,000 as part of this arrangement which is a very helpful contribution to Parish income. I urge anyone who pays tax and uses the Parish offertory envelopes to complete the form which is included with this newsletter and return it as soon as possible. All who did so five years ago need to complete this form again. It would also be great if others commenced being part of this system. Fr. Daniel Pyburn P.P.
