SINGING TO LIFT YOUR SPIRITS If you've been finding the wet and windy weeks somewhat difficult of late you may be glad to hear that a new free singing session is beginning in Skibbereen Town Hall from 10.45-11.45am on the second Friday of each month. Singing is a great way to lift the spirits and all are welcome to come along and enjoy singing uplifting songs in an easy and fun way with others. There is no charge for these sessions, so why not pop in and enjoy meeting others over a sing and a cup of tea or coffee. The 'Little Sing Sessions' are being run as part of the Friday Club's weekly programme and will link in with local events such as the Feelgood Festival in Bantry and the West Cork BIG SING! project. The singing will be facilitated by local Community Musician and Choir Leader Caz Jeffreys and the first session will be on Fri 12th February. For further information please contact Caz on 083 1425599 or by email at: cazjeffreys@gmail.com<mailto:cazjeffreys@gmail.com>. You can also follow the project on Facebook at West Cork Arts and Wellness or Caz Jeffreys Music

Caheragh/Dromore Defibrillator Group Caheragh Dromore Defibrillator Group is currently arranging a certified Irish Heart Foundation training on Saturday April 16, 2016 from 10 am to 2 pm in Caheragh Hall. Topics covered include Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Anyone who wishes to take part in the training is asked to phone 087 452 9216 or contact any committee member to register (deadline for registration is April 9). The group continues to maintain and

check all four AEDs: at Dromore National School; Clancy’s Cross; Coachman’s Inn Bauravilla; and on the outside wall of West Cork Oil offices in Caheragh. We wish to thank the Parish community for continued goodwill and support. Knowing how to administer CPR and to use the AED means that in the event of a heart related emergency, locally trained volunteers can access and use one of the four AEDs. Swift intervention has been proven to save lives. Caheragh Dromore Defibrillator group wishes everyone a happy Easter.

I.C.A. The Caheragh guild of ICA meet in the community Hall at 8pm on the 3rd Wednesday monthly except July & August. At the moment members are attending the sports centre in Skibbereen having qualified for the "Go for life" grant which encourages members to be fit & active. At the January meeting Kathleen Harnedy, a community worker with the HSE gave a very informative talk on entitlements and services available from the Health Service Execuitive. Members had a very enjoyable evening at the Charades competitions organised by Cork Federation & Drimoleague ICA guild recently. Craft days held at the Celtic Ross Hotel were also attended and very much enjoyed.

New members always welcome

The Ilen Valley Game Protection Association: Award 2015 The Ilen Valley Game Protection Association was founded in 1969. It draws its membership from the parishes of Drimoleague and Caheragh, some of its founding members are still active. Game preservation has been a priority for many years at various sites in both parishes. This has recently been happening at Rockmount, on the edge of the Drimoleague Heritage Walkway where the committee have established, with the help of David and Elizabeth Ross an excellent game sanctuary and propagating ground for pheasants, partridge, quail and wild duck. A particularly interesting species are the white pheasants which have been introduced to the area. Because of their white plumage, they are quite easily spotted in the surrounding townlands, and they are breeding well. The grey partridge is a protected species. Thirty of these have been released after months of careful feeding by Diarmuid O Neill. There are plans to introduce quail in the near future. Perhaps the greatest addition this year has been the completion of a wild duck pond last February adjacent to the walkway just above Ahanafunsion Bridge. This is quite a large pond with an excellent source of water. It has an island at its centre which is suitable for feeding and also a refuge from foxes. It is quite an uplifting experience to see the fifteen wild ducks rise and fly off in formation and then return and skate across the water as in this great photo by a recent visitor to the walkways. The four acres surrounding the pond is sown with wild bird cover under the AEOS scheme. The seed is purchased each year by the Ilen Valley Game Protection Association. The seed grows into a fine crop which is not only a food source but a perfect ground cover for nesting birds in the spring. The crop is also a delight to behold with its blue flowers covering the fields and creating an interesting feature for people walking the Drimoleague Walkway. The efforts of the Ilen Valley Game Preservation Association are greatly appreciated by the community. When a new name for the May Bank Holiday festival was required, the committee decided that it should be called the Drimoleague Wild Duck Festival to highlight this unique aspect of nature conservation in Drimoleague, and to encourage people to walk the Drimoleague Walkways and see for themselves the beauty of these wild ducks in their natural environment. We congratulate the Ilen Valley Game Protection Association who recently came third in the National Association of Regional Gun Clubs for their work in conserving and protecting wildlife on the Drimoleague Walkways.

TAXPAYERS CAN HELP THE PARISH The Revenue Commissioners’ form which is available in the porches of the churches can be used by any taxpayers who have contributed

€250 to Caheragh Parish over the course of a year. If you have already completed a form there is no need to do so

again for five years. The Revenue Commissioners will give a rebate to the Parish for each tax-paying donor who completes a form. Caheragh Parish received almost

€4,000 in 2015 from the Revenue Commissioners. However, the more that sign up for

it the more it will benefit the Parish. Please complete the form, if you have not already done so, and return it to the Parish. Any uncertainty about this system can be explained by Fr. Daniel Pyburn P.P. 028-52985 or 087-1303135
