Caheragh Vintage Threshing Committee. On Saturday 26th November the Committee met for their final 2016 meeting to celebrate, together with their many helpers, volunteers and well wishers, the end of another successful fund raising year. Central to the celebrations was the disbursement of the monies collected to Cancer Research and local charities, Cancer Research being the main beneficiary. In accepting the cheque, Dr Soden, from the Research Centre gave an update on progress, the treatment of melanoma yielding positive results among other research projects. Results like this make all efforts by the committee worthwhile, while the magical "Past the Million" is very encouraging. The evening continued with music and song from Catriona; providing an excellent party atmosphere. In conclusion the Committee would like to wish all a very Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year. Athletics. Ellen Mc Carthy, Dreeny had an outstanding Cross Country Season in 2016 winning medals at County, Munster and All Ireland level. In the Cork County Championships she won the silver medal in second place under 18 while at under 19 level she won Bronze in 3rd place and came 4th in the Junior ladies race (under 20) Ellen then progressed to the Munster A Cross Country Championships. In these Championships the first twelve Athletes to finish receive individual medals and also represent Munster in the All-Ireland series. At under 18 level she finished in 7th place while also winning a team gold medal with Cork. In both the under 19 and Junior women’s race she was very impressive finishing 3rd in both as well as winning a team gold with Cork at Junior level. The first leg of the All-Ireland A Cross Country Championships took place at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Co.Dublin. With National titles at stake competition was extremely high and with excellent conditions for the time of year races were very fast indeed. Ellen again competed at under 18 and Junior level, running strongly from the start she finished 14th and 22nd respectively winning inter county Bronze with Cork and Gold with Munster at under 18 while also claiming team silver with Cork at Junior level. Finally on Sunday 11th Dec the second leg of the All-Ireland Championships were held at Dundalk IT where she competed at under 19 level and running a superb second lap of the 4km course finished in 10th place overall winning an individual medal while also winning a silver team medal with Munster.

Cheval Ride We in Bauravilla are hosting a Cheval Ride this Sunday 18th. It will leave the Coachmans Inn at 12.30pm.There will be refreshments and a raffle in the Coachman's afterwards.

Dreeny N.S. Season Greetings from the southern corner of the Caheragh Parish and as always this is a busy little place. In September we welcomed our new junior infants Ciarán O’Donovan, Laura Daly, Grace O’Sullivan, Labhaoise Mc Carthy and Matthew O’Neill. We also welcomed Ella O’Sullivan to First Class. We completed six weeks of swimming classes in Baltimore Community Leisure Centre . We also started hurling coaching and look forward to football training in the New Year. We had a modest harvest this year in the garden, the children picked courgettes and dug up potatoes. We researched how to make homemade crisps. We watched a video clip on the recipe and method and each typed up the recipe. The teachers made crisps from the garden potatoes for the children to sample. One suggestion from a junior infant was that we sell them! On Monday 10th of October, the children in the senior room went to the Cope Foundation in Skibbereen to take part in a fantastic music workshop in conjunction with the Feel Good Festival. The Children were the first children in Ireland to play percussion instruments in the Gamelon Orchestra which came all the way from Java. We celebrated Science Week and Maths Week in our first term and what fun we had, please feel free to look at our blog to see what we got up to on dreenyns.scoilnet.ie/blog. We recently took part in the Library Quiz in Skibbereen and our team comprised of Mark Crowley, Luke Shorten, Aoife Daly and Hannah Crowley. They did themselves proud. In early November, the children took part in the Christmas Shoebox Appeal for the less fortunate children in third world countries. A great cause and lovely to see the real spirit of Christmas alive and well. The children have taken part in the Labyrinth Christmas Art Project in association with the Uillinn Art Centre in Skibbereen. The project involves making Christmas decorations using twine, glue and glitter. The art was created outside to prevent the classroom turning into a glittery mess! All the creations will be on display in the Uillinn centre over the Christmas holidays. It is very exciting to be a part of such an artistic endeavour. Meanwhile back in the classroom great preparations are under way for our Christmas concert which will take place on Friday 16th December. The senior room made a lovely Christmas cake for the parents and relatives to enjoy with a cup of tea after the concert. Finally, we would like to wish all our fellow parishioners and readers a very happy, peaceful Christmas and good wished 'Upcycling' milk cartons to wallets. Halloween Fun! for the new year.

My trip to World Youth Day. By, Daniel McCarthy, Corliss I had the privilege of attending World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland in July this year. There wasn't any pilgrimage organised with the Diocese of Cork and Ross, so I travelled instead with the Irish chapter of Jesus Youth - a charismatic Catholic movement, recently granted papal recognition and which has its origins in India. While most of our group were IndianIrish, I was joined by several friends I knew from the Catholic society at UCC, including the two American student chaplains. With everyone barring the lay organisers and Ft Marius O'Reilly - the chaplain at UCC - below 32 years of age, it made for a vibrant, youth-orientated environment which, for a religious event, I found to be refreshing and highly uplifting. It was a terrific week. To be able to witness so many young people my own age, living and celebrating the same faith, was a remarkable experience. In the morning I might shake hands with a pilgrim from Bolivia, in the afternoon I might get chatting with a few Portuguese, in the evening I might pick out the flags of South East Asia. It's very seldom one gets to immerse themselves in such an international environment, people had very literally come from all corners of the earth to attend World Youth Day. It was a week where I could truly glimpse the universal nature of the church, one of many different peoples and as many languages, something that can often be difficult to envisage growing up in a rural parish, where everybody knows everyone. There were many different ceremonies, catechisms and masses held in Krakow for the 3 million youth attendees. On Thursday there was the opening ceremony for the arrival of Pope Francis, my first time seeing the holy father in person - a fantastic day! On Friday we had a powerful display of the stations of the cross, involving many stage participants and artists. On Saturday we were treated to the all night vigil, where we camped overnight in an a field that stretched well beyond where the eye could see. On Sunday there was the papal mass. Krakow 2016 is an experience I will look back on with many fond memories. I got the opportunity to meet so many different people within the church, including an exiled Iraqi Christian now living in Dubai, with the most moving story. The Polish meals were lovely and our accommodation - sleeping bags in a local school - was only suitable for an event so devoid of luxury. The next World Youth Day will be in Panama and I can highly encourage people thinking of going. Daniel McCarthy, Corliss, Caheragh.

Unfortunately, not everyone got a place but the ballad group of Jennifer and Helena Collins, Oisin Daly and Meave and Aoife Kingston claimed second place along with the set dancers and Cathriona Keohane for her recitation. The figure dancing group of Clodagh and Amy McKennedy, Claire Hegarty, Helena Collins, Sinead O’Donovan, Aoife and Meave Kingston and Mairead Crowley claimed first place as did the Drama Group who then both progressed to the county final in Ovens. Tadgh MacCárthaigh GAA News. As the festive season is now upon us we can look back on the 2016 GAA year and it’s many happenings. The under 21 footballers having already accounted for St.James, Goleen and St.Mary’s in the Championship faced St.Colums in the West Cork final on Friday 1st July in Bantry and with a classy display were crowned Champions on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-9, an excellent achievement despite having a small panel of players. The minor footballers played Ballingeary in the first round of the Championship and with all the squad under 17 gave a brave performance only losing narrowly in the end. The Junior A footballers having defeated St.James and Barryroe in getting to the West Cork Semi-final gave a disappointing display against St.Colums and were defeated. Under Age:

The under 12 footballers had two teams entered in the league and both were very successful. In the Autumn Cup and shield competitions, team 1 made the shield final where they defeated Ahan Gaels on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-17 while team 2 lost the Cup final to a strong Bantry side. The under 14 team played eight league games winning 6 and losing 2 which got them to the final where they played a very strong Urhan team who they also played in the Championship final. Despite losing both finals the team had a great year especially with two brilliant Championship wins against Clan na Gael and Naomh Aban. The under 16 team also had a very successful season losing only one league game and recording a superb Semi-final Championship replay victory against Kilmeen. They played a very strong Bantry team in the final and certainly lost no honour in defeat. The under 6, 8 and 10 footballers all trained on Saturday mornings in Aughaville with all teams taking part in Various Blitz competitions. Also the under 10 footballers won the John D Whooley Shield final at Church Cross in Sept, defeating O’Donovan Rossa in the final. Well done to all the boys and girls. Cul Camp:

This year the Summer Cul Camp went ahead in Aughaville from the 11th to 15th July, and again was an outstanding success with over 100 children taking part during an action packed week Cork:

There was disappointment for the Cork Senior footballers when they lost to Tipperary in the Munster Semi-final in Thurles. Colm, Kevin & Brian O Driscoll all started on the Cork team which was a great honour for the club and let’s hope for better luck in 2017. Finally the club would like to thank all those who helped out in any way during the past season and wish everybody a Happy Christmas and Healthy New year.

Offertory Envelopes I am very grateful to all who used the offertory envelopes in 2016 and I encourage you to do so in 2017. Please use them at Masses in Caheragh and Dromore and also if you are at Mass in churches which surround Caheragh Parish such as Bantry, Skibbereen, Drimoleague, Drinagh, Durrus, Ballydehob, Kilcoe and Leap. It would not be feasible to bring the envelopes to churches which are further away than those. Also, the parish can receive financial rebates from the Revenue Commissioners for offerings given to the parish by taxpayers. I urge anyone who pays tax to complete the form which is available in the porches of Caheragh and Dromore churches and return it as soon as possible. Fr. Daniel Pyburn P.P.

Young at Heart Club (Caheragh Active Retired Group). The Club continue to meet on Thursday afternoons for tea, chat and creative activities. Recently, the Tea Dance organized by the Rural Transport,in the Parkway Hotel, and the Active Retired Christmas lunch in the West Cork Hotel, were both well attended by members. The year ends with a festive get together in the hall on Thur 15th December, Sadly, we remember Nora Moynihan, R.I.P., a wonderful lady, and one of our original members - may she rest in peace. Best Wishes to all for a Holy and Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year - Note; There will be no Christmas party for older parishioners this year. There will be an event held in the Spring instead to celebrate the older members of our community.

Caheragh Pastoral Council - Year of Mercy Presentation December 8th 2015 to November 20th 2016 was announced an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy by Pope Francis. During the Jubilee year, Christians throughout the world explored the theme of U10 Hurling Blitz mercy and various events took place to celebrate the occasion. An evening of prayer, music and reflection was held at the Church of the Most Holy Rosary in Kilcoe on Friday, 11th November 2016 to mark the year of Mercy. Six Pastoral Council groups participated in the event; Aughadown, Caheragh, Castlehaven, Kilmacabea, Skibbereen and Rath & the islands. Each group gave a presentation on the theme of mercy; all from a different and unique perspective. Caheragh Pastoral Council gave a presentation in relation to the theme of mercy within three different family relationships. Mary and Susannah Keohane spoke about mercy from the perspective of a mother and daughter. They reflected on the importance of instilling a sense of hope, compassion and forgiveness within a family setting and in our young people; and they prayed to the Holy Family for Their blessings. Anne Crowley and Donal McCarthy examined the theme from the viewpoint of a sister and brother. They discussed how relationships between siblings and other family members may not always run smoothly but by showing compassion, caring, kindness and mercy; differences can be resolved and relationships strengthened. They prayed a family prayer in praise and thanksgiving. Husband and wife, Kenneth and Helena Kingston reflected on mercy within a marriage relationship. They considered how God’s mercy may be manifested by showing mercy to one another. They gave examples of how married couples can show mercy, speak mercy and pray for mercy and they asked God for His continued guidance to married couples and families. The three pairs then lit a candle to remember deceased loved ones and entrusted their prayers to Mary, the Mother of God. The evening concluded with refreshments in Kilcoe national school. The event which was both spiritual and sociable, was a meaningful way of demonstrating how mercy can be incorporated in everyone’s’ life and community.

Tadhg MacCarthaigh Ladies The Caheragh ladies had a somewhat topsy turby season. After the heady heights of a county final and a West Cork title the previous year unfortunately the ladies were unable to maintain the momentum. A few good performances were somewhat undermined by a number of sloppy results and whilst the ladies did advance to the County Quarter Final, Carrigaline proved too strong on the day. The U.16 girls provided a silver lining for the ladies club by reaching the West Cork final. After a thrilling battle with local rivals, Castlehaven, in Aughaville the girls were crowned champions. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers/trainers of the ladies club for their continued time and effort in keeping the show on the road. There is an enormous amount of behind the scenes work done each year to maintain the club, which cannot be overlooked. A massive, massive thank you to all those involved. Save the Date - the Caheragh ladies hold their annual quiz on Wednesday, 28th December at 8p.m. sharp in the Coachman’s Inn. In addition there will be coffee morning & cake sale in Caheragh hall on Sunday, 1st January at 12noon. The award winning Caheragh Scor na nOg team will also be performing their play.
