I.C.A. News Members of Caheragh I.C.A. guild have completed a course of "Go for Life" at the Sports Centre, Skibbereen. We met at 10 AM for an hour every Tuesday morning for six weeks. We did various exercises which were very beneficial and enjoyable. At our last meeting on March 18th our guest speaker was Nurse Bernadette O' Riordan from the Mizen Primary Care Team Schull, who spoke at length about the risks of diabetes. How important good diet and exercise was for that, and various other health issues. We meet on the third Wednesday of every month.

The Captain Francis O’Neill Memorial Co. The Captain Francis O'Neill Memorial Co. are delighted to inform their patrons and supporters of their latest news on Cheif O'Neill's Irish Festival in San Francisco. In August 2013 The Captain Francis O' Neill Co. joined with Bantry Developement & Tourism Association and Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann in the organizing of An O'Neill Remembered Weekend Festival. Two direct descendants of Chief O'Neill's attended at that Festival. Philip O'Neill from Oxford in England and his cousin Tom O'Neill from San Francisco. They enjoyed their stay very much. So much so that when Tom O'Neill went back to his home town in Tiburon California his community there asked him to give a lecture on the history of Chief O'Neill in the local Library. He informed them of all we were doing here in Tralibane & Bantry. He told them of the great legacy that Chief O'Neill to the Irish people and musicians all over the world by saving and documenting the Irish Traditional Music. After the lecture Tom and the Irish Community in Tiburon decided to hold a Chief O'Neill Irish Festival something similar to what The Captain Francis O'Neill Co. hold annually here in Tralibane. The first Irish American Festival was held in Tiburon on Feb. 28th 2015, it was a great success. Tom plans to come again with his friends to Our Annual Pattern Day in Tralibane in September this year. Our next event is the Mid-Summer Dance at the Monument in Tralibane on June21st,@ 8.30p.m. Music by Tim Joe & Ann Riordan. All are welcome. Professor Gerry O’Sullivan Memorial Park Caheragh Memorial Park Committee are holding an ‘Open Day’ in the Professor Gerry O’Sullivan Memorial Park on Easter Monday April 6th from 2.30pm to 5.00 pm. Almost twelve months since the Launch and turning of the first sod, Phase 1 has been successfully completed laying the foundation for our theme ‘Science through Nature’. An exciting innovative outdoor park which has significantly enhanced the village since its formation – phase 2 & 3 to be undertaken before completion. You are invited to the ‘Open Day’ which will be a family ‘fun day’ out and experience the excellent workmanship and natural outdoor amenity creating ‘a place’ to meet in our community. Events on the day will be as follows:- Review Development of Phase 1. - Turning on the lights. - Launch of Phase 2. - Primary School Classmates of the late Professor O’Sullivan will each set a plant/tree. - Treasure Hunt. - Web Site will be launched and can be viewed indoors. - Bouncing Castle & Penalty Shoot Competition – prizes presentation by Sports Stars. - Live outdoor Music and Set Dancing with Vincent Crowley (platform in place). - Refreshments provided. We want this park to be alive for the local community – now and in the future. It will have the potential to evolve with future generations into a place for many community events. An outdoor Natural Exploratorium which will be the first of its kind in Ireland illustrating that Science is not about manipulating nature but rather using the perfections of nature in a way that can address human issues. Linking the park with the lifelong work in medicine and research of Professor O’Sullivan. Connecting the flora and fauna to the basic building blocks of life so critical in advancing science and medicine. Come along on Easter Monday and as the saying goes ‘take a walk in the park’. The committee wish to thank everyone who helped in any way for their kind support and good wishes in getting to this stage and we look forward to the next phase with gusto and optimism. Together we can achieve great results for our community. “Is feidir linn” www.caheraghmemorialpark.com

Young at Heart Club (Caheragh Active Retired Group). All the members have come through the winter months without any serious setbacks and are ready to greet Spring. We enjoyed a Tea Dance in the West Lodge Hotel; Bantry and the Mealagh Valley group entertained us to a very enjoyable afternoon, providing a cooked lunch and musical entertainment in their very pleasant community hall. With the warmer weather on the way we can start to plan a full programme of activities.

Scor na nOg and Scor na bPaistí. The County final of the Scor na nÓg table quiz took place at the Éire Óg Pavilion in Ovens on January 16th. The quiz team of Charlie McCarthy, Eugene Daly, Tadhg McCarthy and James McCarthy were on great form on the night, being level with Aghabullogue at the end of ten rounds. An exciting tie breaker of fourteen questions followed, before a winner was found. Unfortunately for the Caheragh boys it was Aghabullogue who took the honours. Congratulations to the Caheragh lads who represented their club very well and came 2nd at County level. The club was very well represented at the Scor na bPáistí Carbery semi-finals in Ballydehob on Sunday, February 1st. It had competitors in all eleven categories. The following is a list of those who took part, Figure dancing Maeve Kingston, Helena Collins, Caitriona Keohane, Sinead O’Donovan, Aoife Kingston and Amy McKennedy. Solo dancing Emma Hegarty. Tadhg Mac Carthaighs were successful in six categories, namely solo singing, sean nós dancing, recitation, musical group, ballad group and the léiriú. However it was musical group of Oisín Daly, Aoife Kingston, Helena Collins, Maeve Kingston and Caitriona Keohane and sean nós dancer, Maeve Kingston who came away with 1st place, securing them a place in the County semi-final in Ovens on March 7th. As these competitors progressed on, and were up against other divisional winners, the standards were very high. Both the musical group and Maeve Kingston (sean nós performed U8dancing) Football Blitz very well at the County semi-final. The musical group were unlucky not to qualify for the County final but Maeve was successful in securing a place. It was back to Ovens once more on March 21st for the County final where Maeve danced very well and came away with 3rd place. This was a great achievement for Maeve and we congratulate her on this success. As a very successful Scor season comes to a close we would like to say many thanks to all who have taken part in the Scor competitions, beginning with the local round in Caheragh hall. Many hours of practice has taken place over the winter months which takes much time and dedication. A big thank you to all the Co. We are delighted to see a 3rd Place: Maeve Kingston growing interest in the Scor competition, but it is back to the football and hurling for the coming months where we wish ye all well in your endeavours and will be in touch again in the autumn.

Cycle Against Suicide 2015 The 2015 Cycle will visit many locations throughout Ireland & there will be an overnight stay in Bantry on Monday May 4th & in Skibbereen on Tuesday May 5th. BANK LOAN DEBT BALANCE MARCH 2015: €39,092 TAXPAYERS CAN HELP THE PARISH The Revenue Commissioners’ form which is available in the porches of the churches can be used by any taxpayers who have contributed €250 to Caheragh Parish over the course of a year. If you have already completed a form there is no need to do so again for five years. The Revenue Commissioners will give a rebate to the Parish for each tax-paying donor who completes a form. Caheragh Parish received almost €12,000 in 2014 from the Revenue Commissioners. There are extra dividends for the first year in the scheme and, as 2014 was the Parish’s first year in it, this figure will be less for subsequent years. However, the more that sign up for it the more it will benefit the Parish. Please complete the form, if you have not already done so, and return it to the Parish. Any uncertainty about this system can be explained by Fr. Daniel Pyburn P.P. 028-52985 or 087-1303135
