2 A SUMMER OF ICELANDIC CINEMA 2011

WELCOME TO A SUMMER OF ICELANDIC CINEMA

O

ne of Bio Paradis’ most important tasks is to give the public regular access to the Icelandic cinema heritage. It is thus with great pride that we introduce for the first time a summer long programme featuring a wide selection of Icelandic films from a twenty eight year period. All films are screened with English subtitles.

Co-incidentally, both films were produced by veteran DoP and producer Snorri Thorisson.

The oldest film in the programme is the excellent The House (Egill Edvardsson, 1983), described at the time by noted film scholar Peter Cowie as “a spectacular and assured debut”. He adds: “The House shares with Don’t Look Now, Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist a vivid sense of the spiritual world at work in everyday life.” The film has just been restored and is presented in a brand new digital print.

The films are divided into five sections. The Modern Day section features films that deal with the present, most of them take place in Reykjavik and vicinity and show our filmmakers vision of modern urban life in Iceland. The Period Films range from medieval times through to the nineteeneighties. The Land and Sea section contains films that feature strongly the elements of nature and in the Family Films category you’ll find most of the output for the last two decades in that field. Finally the Documentaries section provides a cross-selection of recent offerings, the majority dealing with the eternal struggle of man vs. nature.

The latest film in the programme is Stormland (Marteinn Thorsson, 2011), a pitch-black comedy with elements of grand guignol and and excellent central performances from Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Elma Lísa Gunnarsdóttir. Both won The Edda, The Icelandic Film and TV Awards, last February for their work.

The Icelandic cinema has been going strong for over thirty years now and this year looks very promising indeed. Icelandic audiences have generally been very supportive of local films and many of them have travelled the world, picking up multiple awards at international festivals. The discovery is yours!

The amazing story of one of the biggest rescue operations Iceland has seen when a huge avalanche hit a small fishing village, Flateyri, on October 26th 1995. Before an outside help reached Flateyri, the locals were on their own during the first five hours, searching and digging up their neighbors, friends and relatives and organizing the rescue. Many obstacles, such as storm and further danger of avalanches, were present as rescue teams nationwide, helicopters and ships tried to find their way to Flateyri. This snow avalanche was one of the deadliest in Iceland’s history, and 1995 is recognized as being the most costly in human lives in recent local history of natural disasters. The story is told by rescuers, media people, the former president of Iceland, and survivors who some were under the snow for 9 hours. SHOWTIMES:
