WINTER RECREATION

Clear Creek County features a wide range of winter recreation options from developed ski areas to quiet backcountry trails, many of which are some of the state’s more popular for their easy access and options for all abilities. While this guide points out many things to do and see, it should only be considered a jumping off point for discovering all the cold-weather activities the county has to offer. No matter how you plan to enjoy the region, always consult avalanche data at avalanche.state.co.us or 303-499-9650 before heading to the backcountry.

Loveland Ski Area has been Colorado’s “local mountain” for more than 75 years and offers a classic ski experience not found at large resorts. Situated high atop the Continental Divide, Loveland receives about 422 inches of snow each season, more than any resort in the Front Range or Summit County.

Loveland has something for every age and ability. Loveland Basin, the main area, offers a wide variety of terrain including wide-open cruisers, trees, bumps and open bowls.

For beginners, Loveland Valley offers a separate, non-intimidating learning area to work on techniques with its own lifts and gentle terrain. There is also a terrain park that is accessible to all ages and abilities, from entry level to advanced park-riders. Enjoy free snowcat skiing along the Continental Divide and explore some of Loveland’s most exhilarating terrain with a free ride on the Ridge Cat. Skiers and riders are required to have a valid

season pass or lift ticket in addition to Ridge Cat Pass which can be picked up free at the Basin Ticket Office.

Convenient, free parking is available at both Loveland Basin and Loveland Valley. A shuttle service to and from each area is also available every 5-10 minutes.

Loveland Ski Area’s season began Oct. 30 and continues until early May. It is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and on weekends and holidays, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Echo Mountain offers affordable day and night skiing, snowboarding, and tubing on 60 acres. It features a lodge with a restaurant and bar overlooking the Continental Divide, a full rental fleet of equipment and clothing and an emphasis on a non-judgmental atmosphere.

Echo Mountain’s season runs Nov. 26-April 17. It is open Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m.5 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. -9 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Night skiing tickets are available Wednesday-Saturday, 4:30-9 p.m.

4 Mountain Adventure Guide - Clear Creek County | Winter 2021-2022

Arapahoe Basin, known as “The Legend” to many Coloradans, has one of the longest ski seasons in North America. Enjoy 360-degree views from the summit or lunch at Black Mountain Lodge while skiing some of the world’s best terrain. It offers a family-friendly, laidback atmosphere with free parking, one convenient base area and affordable lessons for kids and adults.

Most facilities are located in the base area including kids’ snowsports lessons, dining areas, retail shop, administrative offices and adult ski school. Lessons are offered for skiers and snowboarders of every ability throughout the season. Both private and class lessons are available.

A-Basin can be reached from Interstate 70 Exit 216 at Loveland Pass. Proceed west on U.S. 6 for 8 miles to their parking lots. When the pass is closed due to weather conditions, access is from I-70 Exit 205 at Silverthorne. No large vehicles, including RVs, towed trailers and charter buses, are

permitted to park in lots without the advance permission.

Arapahoe Basin’s season is Oct. 11-June 7 and is open daily. Lifts begin operating at 9 a.m. Monday-Friday and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and select holidays. Most run until 4 p.m. daily, but times vary for each area of the mountain.

HERMAN GULCH BAKERVILLE

Herman Gulch exit provides access to a few private homes and the popular Herman Gulch Trailhead. Take the frontage road, Watrous Way, on the north side of the interstate and head east to a well-marked parking area with vault toilets. Respect private property in the area. All trails at this exit begin at the parking lot.

HERMAN GULCH TRAILHEAD

A former sawmill road, Herman Gulch Trail is a 6.4 mile out-and-back trail ending at Herman Lake with access to the Continental Divide Trail and Jones Pass Trail. Herman Gulch, known for spectacular views and deep snow, is ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Portions can be challenging. Watrous Gulch, which intersects with the west end of Bard Creek Trail, is an advanced snowshoe trail with views of Torreys Peak and nearby 13ers. Arrive prepared for winter conditions as there are no amenities. Leashed dogs are welcome. During winter and spring beware of avalanches. Visit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website at avalanche.state.co.us for details. Contact the Clear Creek Ranger District to learn about snow and trail conditions.

Bakerville is an exit with no amenities, but great access to the backcountry and an easy, paved out-and-back recreation trail to Loveland Ski Area. Trailhead parking and a vault toilet can be found on the south side of the interstate. Grizzly Gulch and Steven’s Gulch areas are accessed by Steven’s Gulch Snow Road, C.R. 321. Dogs are allowed on trails but must be on a leash. Stay on the road and do not trespass.

ilver Plume is a former silvermining camp on Clear Creek at 9,116 feet with a current population of about 200. Incorporated in 1880, the town features historic buildings and Victorian-era homes, a public park with picnic shelter and playground, history museum, post office, public restrooms, trailheads for snowshoeing and Nordic skiing and a few businesses. The federally designated Georgetown-Silver Plume National Historic District comprises Silver Plume, Georgetown and the Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park between the two towns.

NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK DISTRICT

The Georgetown-Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District conserves and interprets the architecture, ambiance, lifestyles, and setting of two of the best-preserved 19th century silver mining towns of the Rocky Mountain West. The district recalls the Colorado Silver Boom from 1864-1893 and includes historic buildings, mining remnants and other unique structures.

7:30 MINE TRAIL

Snowshoe this challenging, narrow mining road lined with historical markers to the Griffin Monument — a memorial to Clifford Griffin, co-owner of 7:30 Mine — two miles up. Enjoy views of the valley or continue a quarter mile to the mine. The steep grade varies from 10-15 percent. Limited parking is available at the trailhead. Be respectful and do not block driveways.

ARGENTINE CENTRAL RAILROAD TRAIL

This former railroad grade of the Argentine Central line passes by old mining sites and connects to the Silver Dale trails above Georgetown via a non-motorized, 2.4-mile segment that begins in Silver Plume and winds uphill to Pavilion Point, which offers outstanding views. It is an excellent cross-country ski, snowshoe and fat bike route with a maximum grade is 7.5 percent. The trailhead is a half mile west of Georgetown Loop Historic Railroad Park’s Silver Plume Depot.

CLEAR CREEK GREENWAY: SILVER PLUME TO GEORGETOWN EXPRESS

Hike, bike, snowshoe or cross-country ski this segment of the Clear Creek Greenway, a 1.5 mile paved path with an easy to moderate grade between Silver Plume and Georgetown. The trail begins at the Georgetown Loop Railroad’s Silver Plume Depot and continues to the Devil Gate’s Depot in Georgetown. With views of the historic narrow-gauge railroad tracks and train, including an overlook area, it is perfect for recreation in all seasons. The trail may also be used uphill beginning in Georgetown.

GEORGETOWN

Georgetown, founded in 1859, was once the third-largest town in Colorado thanks to nearby silver mines. It’s now home to about 1,000 residents, but on weekends, it buzzes with visitors in town to shop its unique stores, admire its Victorian-era buildings, dine at popular restaurants and ride the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad. In winter and early spring, a wide range of recreation opportunities are easily reached from town. Georgetown Lake and a trail around it offer easy opportunities for ice fishing and snowshoeing. Visitor centers near the exit and downtown can provide additional information.

The Georgetown Wildlife Viewing Station offers a safe place to see bighorn sheep from coin-operated viewing scopes. Take Exit 228, turn left (north) on Alvarado Road and follow the binocular signs until reaching the station next to the lake.

Guanella Pass Road, a Colorado Scenic Byway, is closed during the winter at Naylor Lake around the end of November and reopens on Memorial Day weekend. During this closure use cross-country skis or snowshoes to explore the area’s beauty and wildlife along the road or a variety of trails including the Silver Dollar Lake Trail, Mt. Bierstadt Trail and the Iron Fens/Geneva Basin trails.

WINTER TRAILS

• The Tom Bennhoff Loop Trail is a 1.3-mile, easy, flat gravel walking path around Georgetown Lake. It is open to hiking, fat biking, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing while providing easy access for ice fishing. Reach the Silver Creek Trail via the Purdy and Dunbarton connector trail.

• The Rutherford Trail provides an excellent hiking and snowshoe route from Georgetown up to Silver Dale, where it connects to the Sporting Times Trail. Rutherford Trail runs adjacent to South Clear Creek with steep 5-12 percent grades. The trailhead is at the eastern end of 3rd Street.

• The Silver Dale Trails, two miles from Georgetown up Guanella Pass Road or the Rutherford Trail, are a 4.2-mile, easy and intermediate, non-motorized trail network in a former mining area open to snowshoeing, Nordic skiing and fat biking. QR coded markers provide information about historic sites including the Colorado Central Mill.

ICE FISHING

When the water is frozen, usually DecemberFebruary, Georgetown Lake provides easy access to ice fishing. The 55-acre reservoir offers good fishing for wild brown trout and stocked rainbow trout throughout the entire year, including winter ice fishing. A warming hut is open to the public next to the lake. On all lakes, be aware of ice conditions. Consult the Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s ice-fishing safety tips. A valid Colorado fishing license is required. Buy one online at cpw.state. co.us or at Clear Creek Outdoors and Safeway in Idaho Springs at Exit 240, or Downieville Fuel Stop at Exit 234.

The daily bag limit for trout is four fish and the possession limit for trout is eight. Copies of statutes and regulations can be obtained from a Colorado Parks and Wildlife area office or at cpw.state. co.us/regulations. For questions, call CPW at 303-297-1192.

WINTER BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY

When heading to the backcountry, especially in winter, be aware of the range of dangers you may encounter, and be prepared.

Clear Creek County created a Back-County Survival Guide card with tips, suggestions and a place to write contact and route information to assist rescuers if necessary. Find a downloadable version at alpinerescueteam.org

There are many things backcountry users need to know, but here are a few basic reminders: travel with a partner and stay together, tell others your plans, assess your physical abilities, wear appropriate clothing, stay hydrated and know the weather. Keep in mind, cell phones can be used to track a location and may provide a signal to emergency personnel. All backcountry users should also know how to handle issues involving elevation and altitude sickness, hypothermia, lightening, fallen trees, burned areas, streams and waterfalls, fast-changing mountain weather, wildlife encounters and more.

In winter, always carry essentials including first aid kit, compass, GPS or cell phone,

matches and candle, pocket knife, flashlight, warm clothing, insulated footwear, shelter, emergency food and water, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, and waterproof gloves and outerwear. Remember, cotton kills. Polypropylene or synthetic materials are highly recommended.

Avalanches are the biggest danger in winter. Always check Colorado Avalanche Information Center weather and avalanche data at 303-4999650 or avalanche.state.co.us before heading out. Remember: 30-45 degree slopes are most prone; cross slopes one at time; carry a transceiver, collapsible probe, shovel and know how to use them; wear gear with Recco reflectors; avoid leeward ridge sides; slides are most common during and after storms; avoid narrow gullies; stay high on ridges or well into valley floor; beware of nature’s warnings like collapsing layers and recent slides. Should a problem occur, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office has authorized the Alpine Rescue Team to fulfill its search and rescue duties. The jurisdiction of the Alpine Rescue Team spans county-wide, excluding municipalities. Call 303526-2417 or visit alpinerescueteam.org for details.

EMPIRE/U.S. 40

Empire, located at the foot of Berthoud Pass, is part of Colorado’s early mining history and the search for gold, which was found here in 1860. The settlement was called Valley City, then changed to Empire City in 1861 and incorporated in 1882. The Original Hard Rock Café, which today is home to a local brewery, opened in 1934 and provided food and a dormitory for miners. The small town — a popular stop for food, coffee, craft beer, sweets and more — is on the way to and from busy recreation spots at Jones Pass, Berthoud Pass and beyond. U.S. 40 continues on to Grand County, Winter Park, Grand Lake and the West Entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park.

BARD CREEK TRAIL

Visitors can access the east end of the Bard Creek Trail for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing from Empire by following C.R. 252, which is Main Street in town, for about two miles. The trail starts at the end of the road. Pull-outs along the way or in-town parking is also available. Bard Creek Trail joins with the Watrous Gulch Trail and connects to Herman Gulch Trailhead at Exit 218. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and always check avalanche conditions.

BIG BEND PICNIC SITE

The Big Bend Picnic Site is located along U.S. 40 at C.R. 202 on the way to the Jones Pass Trailhead in a lodgepole pine forest with scenic views. There are seven sites with tables and fire grates. A restroom is available, but no drinking water. The picnic area is open year-round however accumulated snow during the winter and early spring may limit parking and hinder access.

JONES PASS BERTHOUD PASS

The Jones Pass Winter Trailhead provides access to the Jones Pass Road, a snowmobiling and winter recreation hot spot, and Butler Gulch, which is closed to motorized vehicles and popular with Nordic and telemark skiers and snowshoers.

From U.S. 40, turn left at the sign for Jones Pass/Henderson Mine. Park and off load at the Henderson Mine gate and follow the Jones Pass Road to reach backcountry bowls. Jones Pass Road travels above treeline for several miles until it dead-ends after crossing the Continental Divide. Essentially a groomed snow road with some steep grades, skiers and fat bikers will find it a challenging workout. It is mostly used for snowmobile recreation.

Snowmobiles operated on public land or trails in Colorado must be registered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Registration, renewals and nonresident snowmobile permits are required annually and are valid from Oct. 1-Sept. 30. Visit cpw. state.co.us to learn more. Be aware, moose are not frighted by vehicles. They will stand their ground and possibly charge.

Operating in the Jones Pass area with a permit for use of 2,600 acres, Jones Pass Guides, 409 East Park Ave. in Empire, offers skiing and snowboarding experiences in three unique bowls with touring and snowcat access daily. Call 970-7265442 or visit jonespassguides.com to learn more.

The non-motorized Butler Gulch Trail is 2.4 miles one way and begins about 100 yards from the winter trailhead. Popular to Nordic and telemark ski and snowshoe, the area has a quick approach and open bowls.

Berthoud Pass — named for Edward L. Berthoud, the chief surveyor of the Colorado Central Railroad during the 1870s — the pass traverses the Continental Divide on the border between Clear Creek County and Grand County. The Berthoud Pass Trailhead, on the Divide, offers a variety of winter activities. The site has a warming hut with vault toilets, interpretive information, and is open year-round. Winter activities include backcountry skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. No sledding or snowmobiling is allowed.

Once home to the now-defunct Berthoud Pass Ski Area, the pass is a destination for winter recreation due to its abundance of steep and challenging terrain and plentiful snow averaging 500 inches annually. There are 65 advanced to expert slopes on 1200 acres. The twisting road on both sides of the pass also makes “car shuttles” possible, eliminating the need for skiers and snowboarders to hike to the top after each run.

There are also numerous stunning trails to snowshoe or cross-country ski. Second Creek Trail is a short trail that’s great for adventurers and heads to Broome Hut, one of the most famous remote cabin rentals in Colorado. Ease of access and great skiing make for excellent backcountry recreation. Visit grandhuts.org or call 970-925-5775 for information.

The road over the pass is a modern, four-lane highway that is well maintained with guard rails and other safety measures. Check weather and road conditions before making travel or recreation plans. Find additional resources online at cotrip.org, isberthoudpassopen.com and berthoudpass.org.

Just on the other side of the pass is the town of Winter Park and its well-known ski resort. Offering more than 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, Winter Park Resort, 85 Parsenn Road, offers an unforgettable winter experience. Open over 75 years, Winter Park Resort is the state’s longest continually operated ski resort. Call 970-726-5514 or visit winterparkresort.com for details.

WINTER DRIVING

Colorado’s weather can change rapidly. Be prepared for tricky and sometimes dangerous winter driving conditions. Be a safe winter driver by slowing down; most crashes occur by driving too fast for the conditions. Leave extra space between vehicles, and always wear a seat belt.

MAINTAIN TRACTION Be sure to have good tire tread; start and stop gradually; drive at steady speeds; accelerate slightly when approaching a hill, then maintain a steady speed going up; and gear down on downgrades.

SKIDS When a vehicle begins to skid, remove your foot from the accelerator or brake, steer in the direction of the skid and once steady, turn the wheel straight and proceed.

BRAKING Be gentle when braking. Without anti-lock brakes, gently pump brakes to avoid locking wheels and skidding. Avoid braking on curves; drive through at a safe, steady speed.

In winter, Interstate 70 can become congested with ski traffic, especially on weekends and holidays. Avoid delays by planning ahead and staying informed about traffic and weather. Call 511 for regularly-updated road conditions. Visit COtrip.org, for road conditions, traffic camera feeds, real-time alerts and more. GoI70.com provides a weekly I-70 travel forecast based on historical data and estimations of how weather, construction and events may impact travel times.

When conditions require, Colorado’s Passenger Vehicle Traction and Chain Law can be implemented requiring snow tires, mud/ snow tires or a four-wheel/AWD vehicle. Drivers with tires that don’t have at least one-eighth-inch tread are in violation and could end up with a large fine. Chains or an alternative traction device like AutoSock may be used. During peak travel times, the I-70 Mountain Express Lane opens. It is dynamically priced.

LOCH LOMOND

WINTER TRAIL

Steuart Road/Forest Road 7012 from Alice to Loch Lomond is a very popular ORV trail in the summer but in the winter the road becomes a non-motorized winter recreation hot spot. It is perfect for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking or winter hiking. Park on Alice Road then continue up toward Loch Lomond. Avoid avalanche danger by staying on the road.

PARKING AT ST. MARY’S GLACIER

The only legal parking for St. Mary’s Glacier trailhead are two parking lots south and north of the trailhead. There are restrooms and trash facilities at both lots, which cost $5 a day. There is no parking on Fall River Road or in subdivisions. Find all area regulations at stmarysglacier.com.

Altitude sickness, also called mountain sickness, is a group of general symptoms that are brought on by climbing or walking to a higher and higher altitude (elevation) too quickly. Altitude sickness can affect anyone who goes to high altitudes— defined as 8,000-12,000 feet above sea level— without giving the body time to adjust to the changes in air pressure and oxygen level.

The more rapid a climb to high altitude, the more likely that altitude sickness will develop. Age, sex and general health do not seem to make a difference in risk for altitude sickness. People with lung or heart disease may be told to avoid high altitudes. Skiers, hikers and anyone planning a trip to a location significantly higher than normal should be know the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness and how to prevent and treat it.

IDAHO SPRINGS

AT THIS EXIT

Idaho Springs, named for Chief Idaho and nearby natural hot springs, was founded in 1859. It is the site of the state’s first significant gold discovery. Mining was largely responsible for its creation and growth, and the city continues to preserve and celebrate its heritage. During the late 20th century, the town evolved into a tourist center and popular stop for travelers heading to and from recreation areas along Interstate 70 or nearby Mount Evans, Echo Lake and adjacent national forest lands. A Victorian-era downtown offers unique shops, popular restaurants and breweries, while mine tours and historic sites provide insight into local history. Idaho Springs’ western-most exit is mostly a residential area, but the exit is the best way to access Stanley Road/County Road 312 and mine tours to the west and a network of easy trails through Idaho Springs to the east.

EDGAR EXPERIMENTAL MINE

The Edgar Mine, the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine, 365 8th Ave., produced high-grade silver, gold, lead and copper in the 1870s. Today, it is an underground laboratory for future engineers. Students and staff conduct one-hour guided tours by appointment for a fee. Tours cover one-half mile of underground workings representing over 100 years of mine development. Visit mining.mines.edu or call 303-567-2911 to learn more.

IDAHO SPRINGS TRAILS

A parking lot at the Exit 239 eastbound off-ramp is an easy way to begin a network of nonmotorized trails that connect to 17th Avenue downtown, the east end of Idaho Springs and ultimately Exit 244/U.S. 6 via the Clear Creek Greenway and Scott Lancaster Memorial Trail. The Big Five Trail begins at the lot and runs east along Clear Creek, intersects the Idaho Springs and Prospector trails, then meets the Charlie Tayler Water Wheel Trail at Exit 240/Hwy 103. Continue east on the Water Wheel Trail to connect to the Clear Creek Greenway in Harold A. Anderson Park at 17th Avenue downtown behind Town Hall. Snowshoe, cross-country ski and fat bike the trails when conditions allow.

PHOENIX GOLD MINE TOUR

The Phoenix Gold Mine, 800 Trail Creek Road, offers an authentic trip into Colorado mining history with a family of fourth generation miners. Experience an educational tour of a working mine and pan for gold. Discover wide, underground tunnels and see gold ore naturally in the rock. Take Exit 238 or 239 to Stanley Road and turn south on Trail Creek Road/County Road 136. It is open daily all year, weather permitting. Reservations are recommended and required for groups of 10 or more. Call 303-567-0422 or visit phoenixgoldmine.com to make reservations and learn more.
