ECHO LAKE AND HIGHWAY 103 TRAILS Highway 103, a portion of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, is open all year and connects the Idaho Springs Visitor Center to the Echo Lake Park area. Mount Evans Road is closed for the season. The road continues on to more trail options, Echo Mountain Ski Area and Bergen Park. The Echo Lake Trail, 10.2 miles south of Idaho Springs, offers an easy Nordic ski or snowshoe hike around Echo Lake. It also provides access to the more challenging Chicago Lakes Trail for those interested in continuing to Echo Lake, Mt. Evans Wilderness, Chicago Lakes or Summit Lake, which is six miles one way. Chicago Lakes Trail can also be accessed from the Echo Lake Campground, 14 miles south of Idaho Springs, where the 6.4-mile Resthouse Meadows Trail begins. This snowshoe hike connects to the Lincoln Lake Trail and Summit Lake Flats Trail, which continues to Summit Lake. To snowshoe Chief Mountain Trail, a 1.5-mile, challenging trail to a summit with 360-degree views including Mount Evans and surrounding peaks, stay on Hwy. 103 to a pull-out near mile marker 18.
