SLEEPYHEAD FESTIVITIES ARE CELEBRATED IN JULY, BUT WHERE DOES THE TRADITION ORIGINATE?
SLEEPYHEAD, NAANTALI'S SUMMER CELEBRITY In Naantali, the 27th of July is a day of celebration – a day when someone particularly deserving is chosen to be the hero for the day. But being a sleepyhead used to be a lot more bothersome, because latecomers and late risers were woken with noise and pelted with prickly thistles. The first sleepyhead stories date back to the times of Christian persecution when seven holy men are said to have slept for 200 years. The sleepyheads of today are nothing compared to those men. The present-day sleepyhead celebrations have a strong connection to the spa tradition, which had its heyday in Naantali and elsewhere in the 19th century. A variety of activities and entertainment was organised for spa guests and the sleepyhead festivities were part of those.
6
Originally, the Sleepyhead Day was full of noise and carnival atmosphere. The participants got together at 7am, and anyone who was even slightly late had to put up with thistle bombs being thrown at them. After that, the noisy procession went out in search of houses where curtains were still drawn. When such a house was found, the crowd burst into song outside it. As spa life petered out, the sleepyhead carnival also disappeared but, since the 1950s, the tradition has been revived. National Sleepyhead Day is now celebrated in Naantali, where a person who has worked for the benefit of the town is chosen as the Sleepyhead of the Year ™. Although the noise-making and thistles are consigned to history, the role of the sleepyhead is not without its drawbacks. At the crack of dawn, the sleepyhead is carried to the shoreline and thrown in the sea.
THE SLEEPYHEAD FESTIVAL IS ORGANISED IN NAANTALI EVERY YEAR ON 26-27 JULY. 7
SLEEPYHEAD FESTIVAL 26-27 JULY
BE AT THE CENTRE OF EVENTS The sunshine town of Naantali is full of lovely people and fun events, and at the very heart of the town is the charming guest harbour. You can find more summer events in the calendar on pages 46 and 47 and a more topical events calendar at visitnaantali.com.
SLEEPYHEAD FESTIVAL 26-27 JULY The unique Sleepyhead Festival is the highlight of the summer for the whole family. Visitors can enjoy the Sleepyhead Market and a variety of other events. On 27 July, Sleepyhead Day, the Official Sleepyhead of the Year is thrown into the sea at 7am sharp. The parade stirs hilarity before and after the immersion. The fun lasts from dawn till dusk all over town and especially Kirkkopuisto's

stage. The Festival includes visitors from Moominworld, the traditional children's dressing up competition and Sleepyhead's Cake Competition - the programme is packed with fun for the whole family. The evening ends with the Sleepyhead concert. The Sleepyhead Market is a great place for buying artisan products, and almost all the events are free-of-charge.

GENUINE EXPERIENCES AND THE FEEL OF HISTORY KIRKKOPUISTO PARK
NAANTALI MARKET SQUARE
CHURCHES IN NAANTALI
Naantali's Kirkkopuisto Park has been a place of recuperation for tourists and spa guests since the early 19th century. It continues to be an important part of Naantali's appeal and charms due to its beauty and well-maintained appearance.
The market square is where the town's own vibrancy resonates with the buzz of international tourists. Market vendors offer a variety of local products: food, flowers, clothes and handicrafts. The market square is located along Tullikatu street outside the town hall and is open 1 May-30 September between 7am and 2pm.
Naantali Church was built as a church for the Catholic Brigittine convent located in Ailostenniemi. Now, the only remaining part of the convent forms the second largest medieval church in Finland after Turku Cathedral.
PLACES OF INTEREST ON YOUR MOBILE Naantali’s monuments and plaques’ mobile guide works on smart devices. You do not need to download a separate app to use it; it works in your browser or with a QR code. The use of the mobile guide is free. The building permit for the convent was signed by Christopher of Bavaria, the King of Sweden, on 23 August 1443. This date is also considered to be the founding date of Naantali Town. The convent buildings were inaugurated in 1462, and the convent was named Vallis Gratiae, the Valley of Grace. Naantali Church is a popular tourist attraction; however, it also functions as a parish church and a Road Church in the summer. The Church of St. Henry in Velkua was built on the island of Palva in 1793.

WALKING TOUR OF OLD NAANTALI An expedition to the winding alleys of the charming old town by the sea. During the tour, you will find out about the history and main sights of the almost 600-year-old convent town. Download the free Nomadi app at app.citynomadi.com and find the Naantali walking tour there.
MUSEUMS NAANTALI MUSEUM & MUSEUM SHOP SÄSONKI Naantali Museum's Hiilola property, situated in the Old Town, is home to 19th century interiors, reflecting the lifestyle of the bourgeoisie in a small town. The Sau-Kallio house, at the back of the delightful garden, gives visitors a glimpse of how craftsmen lived. Through archaeological findings on the Humppi property, you can find out about Naantali's convent past and the historic narrative of the town. Humppi also houses changing exhibitions and a miniature model of the 15th Century Brigittine convent.
After the sea battle of Palva in 1808, the Russian forces stole from the church all that was not nailed down. Only the altarpiece, which had been hidden, was saved. An old ship cannon was left behind after the battle and it has been placed close to the church as a memorial to the events. The first wooden church was built close to Kirkkosalmi in Merimasku as early as 1648. The wooden cross-shaped church which stands in its place today was built in 1726 and is the sixth-oldest wooden church in use in Finland today. The parish and the church have been in Rymättylä since the 14th century. The current granite church was built in the early 16th century. The medieval style of the church has been preserved well. The church boasts numerous medieval artefacts from the 14th century onwards. The colour scheme of the church with its 500-year-old frescos is very special.

NAANTALI’S SUN TURNED NIGHT INTO DAY The sun shines brightly on Naantali. Once upon a time, the sun even shone money.
12
Naantali's sun is well known across Finland. And deservedly so since Naantali is the sunniest place in the country. However, the sun in Naantali has historical significance. Due to its town privileges, Naantali had the right to collect taxes for any trade taking place in the town and could place duties on products brought into the town. In the 1750s, a toll house and a toll gate – with a wooden sun hanging over it – were built to collect customs duties.
Later the wooden sun was replaced by a copper one, which was polished with lard and shone as brightly as the sun above; no one could claim that they didn't know where customs duties were collected.
carried out in the daytime, under the sun, was taxable. In Naantali, they soon came up with the idea that the toll house sun shone brightly night and day, which meant that even nighttime trade became taxable.
In addition to customs duties, Naantali's sun also brought other economic advantages to the town. As was the practice then, only trade
Few are as imaginative as the taxman who makes the sun shine at night.

KULTARANTA GARDEN IN THE PRESIDENT’S SUMMER RESIDENCE Kultaranta Manor House was built in 1916, one year before Finland declared independence. Kultaranta has been the summer residence of Finnish presidents since 1922; thus, Naantali is referred to as the summer capital of Finland. LOUHISAARI MANOR’S RESTLESS GHOST Louhisaari Manor in Askainen, dating back to the 1650s, is a spectacular place in daylight but, as with all historical buildings, it has its dark side. Louhisaari was built by the Fleming family, which is intertwined in various ways with the history of SwedenFinland. And not only in positive terms. The last of the Louhisaari Flemings was Herman, a hot-tempered and jealous man, who locked his wife in a closet when he was away. Her only contact with the outside world was a small hatch through which servants passed food into the closet.
As the story goes, one day Herman left on his travels and failed to mention to the servants that his wife was locked in the closet, where she withered away. This story is legend, but it is also easy to believe it when you wander through the manor late at night.
Creaking steps, banging doors and disembodied sighs are heard. A group that studies supernatural phenomenon found changing energies in the manor and managed to record speech and sounds. But the guest who was touched whilst in an otherwise empty room felt more tangible evidence of supernatural elements. There is also a room called the Devil's Chamber in Louhisaari. Plus, it is said that there is a tunnel from the manor to the nearby Askainen Church. Dare yourself, visit.

ANCIENT BONFIRES ARE LIT ACROSS THE ARCHIPELAGO IN LATE AUGUST When we talk about ancient bonfires, people often think of the historical role of bonfires as a way to signal to seafarers or warn locals of an approaching threat. The modern event bears elements of those beacon fires, but today they have a more peaceful significance. The bonfires are lit on the last Saturday in August to signify the end of the summer season. Furthermore, they are lit in memory of those who never returned from the sea. The Night of the Ancient Bonfires also finds influences in another
late summer celebration, the closing festivities of the Venetian villa season, which also has strong links with water and fire. The ancient bonfires are also lit to celebrate the unity between the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. The tradition began between Finland and Estonia in 1992 and has since spread to other countries around the Baltic. The event is becoming a shared tradition with the aim of highlighting the importance of the conservation of
the Baltic Sea and the preserving of the region's cultural heritage. In Naantali, the event has grown into an end of season celebration. It is an especially significant for those out on their boats, who can admire the line of bonfires from the sea.

Visit Naantali also organises independent bike trips along the Archipelago Trail and all the way to Utö. Give us a call or email us for more information. Our website also offers more information on the different alternatives and has maps for all route descriptions, which you can print out or download onto your phone.
RENT A BIKE AND EXPERIENCE NAANTALI’S ARCHIPELAGO NEAR AND FAR Choose the route that appeals to you most among the different options provided by Visit Naantali. These routes give you a chance to see the uniqueness and diversity of archipelago nature and local culture as you encounter charming new attractions along the route. You can rent a bike in Naantali, explore the archipelago and then return the bike at your next destination, for example, in Turku or Kustavi.
LUONNONMAA ROUTE
13 km, flat terrain, 1-2 h
Along the route you will witness picturesque archipelago countryside. You may see fishermen catching Baltic herring with their long lines on the Ukkopekka Bridge. The route travels partly along gravel roads through scenic landscapes on Luonnonmaan. You will cycle past numerous old farm houses with their impressive yards. Take a detour to Haijainen nature trail and barbecue sausages. At Villa Farm half-way through your journey, you can swim and admire the magnificent coastal scene. The rest of the journey to Naantali centre continues on the same road.
LUONNONMAASÄRKÄNSALMI
16 km, flat terrain, 2-4 h This route conveys the atmosphere of the archipelago and its picturesque charm. Along the route, you will have a chance to see Naantali Old Town and
Kuparivuori hill, attend a guided tour in Kultaranta Garden (p. 14) and admire the magnificent archipelago scenery from Särkänsalmi bridge. Kultaranta Resort provides a tasty lunch if you find yourself getting peckish. Bar Porho in Marina and Särkkä kiosk sell drinks, and from there you can turn back towards the centre again. The terrain is mostly flat so the route suits all cycling abilities.
NAANTALI-MERIMASKUASKAINEN-LEMU-MASKUNAANTALI 50 km, variable terrain, 3-6 h This route is better suited to those looking for a slightly more challenging cycle. It takes you through beautiful archipelago scenery via Merimasku, Askainen, Lemu and Masku and back to Naantali. Along the route, you will witness the gorgeous scenery opening from a number of bridges, have a chance to take part in a guided tour in Kultaranta Gardens (p.14) and admire
Louhisaari Manor and traditional coastal and countryside landscapes. There are many pleasant places along the route for taking a break.
SMALL ARCHIPELAGO TRAIL 110 km, variable terrain 1-3 days This longer cycle route is a magnificent way to experience the archipelago and witness the local way of life. The route leaves from the centre of Naantali and the journey (33 km) to Hanka in Rymättylä is very hilly. The journey takes you on a traditional short ferry crossing and onboard a commuter vessel on an hour's journey from Hanka to Nauvo (check the timetable in advance). From Nauvo, you will be travelling along flatter terrain. A ferry from Nauvo to Parainen takes in more magnificent archipelago scenery. The route from Parainen back to Naantali is along cycle roads next to sometimes busy traffic. Overnight accommodation can be found in Nauvo or Parainen.
