If Winter Carnival is the granddaddy of Holiday Valley events then Pondskimming is the wacky baby sister! The main event for Pondskimming is where participants line up to test their skills by skimming the icy water of the “pond” built at

the bottom of Yodeler by the Holiday Valley Mountain crew. All the participants have their own technique but the goal is to skim across the pond without getting wet. Some achieve the goal but See SKIM Page 13

Welcome to Mardi Gras

3 Days of Activities this Weekend from the Slopes to the Village

Ellicottville, NY – It’s here! Mardi Gras is this weekend and Ellicottville is buzzing in anticipation! The Ellicottville Winter Carnival and Mardi Gras weekend is chock full of fun and activities. The weekend kicks off on Friday night, as it should, with the Junior Bacchus Ball, a ticketed event, at the Ellicottville Brewing Company. While the dress code is ski casual, carnival attire is encouraged. The Ball is going to be the place the weekend’s Royalty will be crowned. The fun gets going in the Private Dining area of the restaurant at 7pm with a menu that includes See Holiday Valley’s Winter smoked salmon, Muffaletta Carnival schedule, page B-4. Village Board Election Three Candidates Vie for Two Board Seats Story by John Thomas, Staff Writer March 15th is election day for the Village of Ellicottville. The five candidates running for mayor and trustee positions are all longtime residents. Trustees Bob Brogcinski and Patra Lowes are the two incumbents running to keep their Village Board positions. Joey DiPasquale is looking to unseat one of the two incumbents. When The Villager asked the candidates for the Village Board about the most pressing problem facing the village, we got a somewhat unexpected answer: parking. There are plenty of challenges, as you’ll see below, but parking has emerged as one of this year’s primary issues. We interviewed each of the candidates to get their thoughts. Bob Brogcinski Incumbent Village Trustee Bob Brogcinski has been a trustee almost continuously since first elected in 1984. He missed only a single two-year term from 1986 to 1988. He has spent his entire career in the banking industry which gives him a strong financial background and a special insight into the budget process. It seems that fiscal responsibility colors all his decisions regarding the village. The biggest current challenge for the village is parking, saying the village keeps adding new restaurants and businesses but doesn’t give them a place to park. “That’s one of the biggest complaints that I hear See VOTE page 14

A meeting was held in the County Legislature’s chambers last week to organize a newly revitalized 219 Corridor Development Committee. The meeting was organized by the Continental 1 organization, a non-profit group committed to the construction of the international route. Crystal Abers from the County Tourism and Economic Development Board opened the meeting, saying it had been a year and a half since any public meeting had been held regarding the route. See 219 page 15 Map of a portion of the proposed route of the four lane section of 219 from the bridge at Cattaraugus Creek to I-86 in Salamanca. The Continental 1 route when completed, will link existing interstate highways with Route 219 to form a 1500-mile, trade and travel corridor between Toronto, Canada and Miami, Florida.

Publisher’s Word “I Love a Parade”

This will not be your average weekend in the village – not by a long shot! The beloved “Winter Carnival and Mardi Gras Parade” is finally upon us, and with it comes uncontrollable laughter, smiles, and a whole bunch of

fun! This weekend’s a guaranteed good time - costumes, parades, live music and zany goings-on in the Village and at Holiday Valley and HoliMont. You won’t want to miss one of the wackiest parades ever on Saturday March 12th at 6:30 p.m. right down the main drag. The parade is once again free for all to participate, so get your group together, get a theme and get involved by calling the chamber office at (716) 699-5046, or download the app at www.ellicottvilleny. com. This year’s Mardi Gras events will kick off Friday night at the EBC with the “Jr. Bacchus Ball” – where music, food and a cash bar are all on order. More importantly, this is your opportunity to make a case why you and your

significant other should be King and Queen of the newly re-vamped Mardi Gras parade! Chuck and I are taking ourselves out of the running this year, but we’ll be watching all the fun! Meanwhile, whether you’re a skier or just an interested observer, you simply must head over to Holiday Valley this weekend! Cookouts and the ever-popular Snow Bar at Yodeler will all keep you entertained on Saturday. Sunday brings the colorful costume competition and my favorite – the “Dummy Downhill.” If you’ve never seen this, you’re missing out! So, dear readers, you better rest up and prepare for one heckuva good time this week! Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival come but once a year! See you out there… JZ-C

John Burrell Addresses Rumors

Dear Editor: Unfortunately, over the past couple of weeks, rumors have been circulating around the Village about me. This seems to be par for the course during local elections. It’s very unfortunate. These types of rumor, untruths and innuendo were used against me this past November when I lost reelection for Town Supervisor by four votes. The same tactics were used against me eighteen years ago when I lost reelection for Mayor by two votes. The rumors that have come back to me so far are: That I erased the hard drive on the Town computer before

I left office. The truth is, I did the same thing my predecessor did. I had all my data removed, had the computer gone through and the password changed. This is common practice in today’s e-world. That I left office removing ten boxes of Town files. The truth is, I left with at least ten boxes of things from my office. I believe everything I left with is mine and accumulated over eight years. I am however going through all of it to make sure I don’t have anything the Town should have. That before I left office I tried to fire my Supervisor’s Clerk, Tracy Stokes. This is a

bold face lie. That if I am elected, I will fire Village Clerk Mary Klahn. This is another bold face lie and I have told Mary that. (The Mayor does not have the power to do that, Mary has Civil Service protection). People that have come to me with these rumors have told me who they heard them from. None of those four people have asked me to verify these allegations. I am not going to disclose their names here. I will not stoop to the level that they have in their zeal to get my opponent reelected. THIS TYPE OF POLITICS SHOULD STOP! Sincerely, John A. Burrell

Celebrate Mardi Gras at Cadillac Jack’s!

Canvas-N-Cocktails

Upscale Comfort

Dear Editor; On behalf of The Ken Brown 700 Club, we would like to thank all of those who contributed in so many ways to making our 2016 Fundraising Party a huge success. As a result of the funds raised through the luncheon tickets, donations and our auction we will be in a position to help out many local organizations again this year. We would particularly like to thank the management of Holiday Valley for once again allowing us to hold the event at the Yodeler/ Champagne Shelter. The lunch could not have been possible without all the help of Vicky and Moose Brown of the Depot.

We also want to thank our major donors who sponsored our luncheon, Cattaraugus County Bank, Hodgson Russ, Team Pritchard, ETA Realty and Peace Bridge Duty Free. Each year our party seems to raise more money than the year before. In spite of the cold weather we served more lunches than ever before and, fortunately, many of our friends stayed after lunch for the auction. It was also successful again, thanks to generous contributions from local businesses and individuals, and Holiday Valley and HoliMont. The beneficiaries of our fund raising will once again be local organizations. Last

year we donated $6200. Our donations in 2016 will bring our total donations back to the community over the $60,000 mark since the humble beginning of the club 15 years ago, when Kenny Brown and nine of his friends decided to do their bit for our community and “Help US Help Others”. Last but not least we want to thank all of our members, not only for their financial contributions to the Club, but also for the many hours they, and their friends spend each year organizing the party, serving food and drinks, and generally assisting in any way to make the event a success. The Ken Brown 700 Club

Committee for

Truth in the Village After 18 Years of Mayor Coolidge, a “Term limit” is justified so you need to know the truth

“Reliable & Trustworthy” is the title Coolidge’s Ad…. So following we review his points in the ad and his interview in the Villager

His Quote:

“With all due respect, this person recently lost the Town-Supervisor election”

Due respect? - Is that why Charlie spread negative innuendo to insure he lost that election?? Is the same thing happening before this election?

• Coolidge on grants - What he really said in a board meeting the day before the Village received confirmation of the grant “I won’t spend another dollar applying for Grants” I guess he has changed his mind. • Coolidge on the East Tank Project - Started by Coolidge but the town drove it to completion after he dropped the ball • Coolidge re: the Waste Water Treatment plant - “His first priority”- this was state mandated with penalties if not done So you are aware the bid came in 25% higher than the estimate of $4M the engineers submitted to the board. So cuts were made but it is still over $5MNow taking on the lightening protection as a new protect? • Coolidge says “The streets & sidewalks are in great shape”- Take a look at them and tell me if you agree. They are repaired on a reactionary basis, not with any long term plan - FYI $80K budget is a decrease from last years. • Coolidge on the Village Park benches - The plan was 1-2 new ones - The Rotary drove this & donated 7 of the 9 tables • Coolidge “No new taxes in years”- But water rates increased significantly & garbage now costs $20 more per quarter. (BTW 0% tax increases is NY State mandated to insure STAR grants) Note: As there is no contingency fund in place, wait until you see what we will have to spend to fix the aging sewer & water system in the coming years. • Coolidge “Mayor’s salary is minimal” - As it will be for any mayor- The board pushed back on his proposed increases • Coolidge on Vote Republican - Strange to say after pushing for the nomination of a Democrat at the Republican caucus • Coolidge on Pride in Village - A colored cement planter in front of the historic Town Hall? For a great group but not a fit!

Questions to Ask? • Why does the 2016 budget history have drastically different numbers from the NY State filed AUD- they should match?

• Why does the Department of Public works continue to increase staff size when the Village has not increased in size nor have services improved? • Why is the Village equipment being replaced only after it breaks down? Should there not be a plan to insure best value?

ASK YOURSELF - IS THERE A PLAN OR DO WE JUST REACT??? * Paid for by: “’Committee for Truth in the Village”

Head Coach, Miguel Azcarate, the coaches and all of Holiday Valley are so proud of all the racers this season. Miguel attributes their success first and foremost to each individual racer’s hard work all season, but also cites the advantages that training at Holiday Valley has for young racers: day and night skiing, great snow conditions and terrain for training, a long season, and a seasoned coaching staff and well-equipped Training Center. He is excited to announce that 3 new families have already joined the race team for the 201617 season!

The Double Black Diamond was nominated by Golf Magazine ‘09 as one of the best redesigns in the country. The back nine winds its way through the base of the mountains and provides spectacular views. The fairways are well

manicured and narrow and this nine provides a very stern test of golf. The greens are carefully manicured to provide a true putting surface In addition to that. HoliMont Update Pushed Around By A Heel? want to go through a sharp turn on an icy or snowy road with the back end of your car leading the way? Of course not. You know that it would be unsafe, and that the car would be almost impossible to control. The same is true in skiing. If you begin your turn by excessively pushing your heels sideways – especially on a steeper and firmer slope – your skis will also be more difficult to control. I am not saying ALL skidded ski turns are bad. Learning to “skid” skis is an essential step in learning how to do more advanced ski turns. But I am saying that some skiers get stuck in the rut of perpetually skidding their turns, when they could progress to the art of carving or “scarving” (skid-carving) their turns. (See the image to the right in the graphic – even racers sometimes “scarve” – and anyone has to do it on extremely steep slopes.)

By Dan Balkin

How sad. Heels do tend to get a bad rap. Synonyms for the metaphorical use (as opposed to the anatomical use) of the term “heel” include a “cad, a scoundrel, or a rascal.” Kind of sounds like an Austrian ski instructor I used to know who went by the fitting nickname ‘Black Willy” – but that’s another story. On a positive note, I’m sure that your anatomical heels are very nice and have never done anyone harm. My heels, thank goodness, have never led me astray. Heels, however, can lead skiers astray – not in a moral sense – but in an athletic sense. Case in point: please look at the graphic. The skier to the left has created This leads us back to a a “skidded” (non-carved) turn. Imagine for a moment familiar acronym: TGIF. that the ski you see on the It does not mean what you left is a car. Would you think. It really means “Tips

Go In First” – which actually means, “Toes Go In First.” In other words, instead of pushing your heels sideways to start a ski turn, you should think of directing all ten toes down the hill. That action lets the front of your skis lead the turn (ski tips) – not the back of your skis (ski tails). As you remember from seventh grade science class with Mrs. Geraldine Hinkleboom, gravity is a mysterious force which prevents us from floating off toward Tahiti. There is a tremendous amount of gravity at work on a pitched ski slope. It is really much easier to befriend gravity by letting your ten toes and ski tips drop down the hill than fight gravity by pushing your heels and ski tails sideways. While skiing, try letting your heels follow your toes through the arc of your turns. Again, it is the same principle as letting the back tires of your car follow the front tires of your car while driving through a snowy curve. And how can you reward yourself for beginning your ski turns with your toes instead of your heels? A night at the casino? Designer label attire? The latest cell phone which will be obsolete in four months? My friends, new skis are always the answer… always.

Top 10 at Sochi; Wardle and Mangan at the Top

SOCHI, Russia (Mar. 1, 2016) – Today’s alpine combined featured warm, spring like conditions with soft snow and challenging course sets, but Galena Wardle (Aspen, CO, U.S. Ski Team/Aspen Valley Ski Club) led the way for the Americans, finishing sixth with teammate Patricia Mangan (Buffalo, NY, U.S. Ski Team/Holimont Race Team) in seventh. Wardle and Mangan grabbed the first ever U.S. top-10 finishes in the event at the FIS Junior World Ski Championship level. With temperatures rising to 50 degrees Fahrenheit at 10:00 a.m., the course workers had their work cut out for them knowing that the hard snow would transform into a grainy and peely surface quickly. The track held up for the ladies with plenty of salt used, but it was a challenge for the men, who followed the women. Also noteworthy was Nina O’Brien (San Francisco, CA, U.S. Ski Team/Burke Mountain Academy/Squaw Valley Ski Team), who was second in the slalom portion of the combined, which moved her up from 26th in super G to finish 12th overall. “Though the conditions were challenging, the ladies executed well and didn’t give

up. They had lots of fight,” said B, C and D Team Head Coach Frank Kelble. “We hope this gives the ladies some confidence going into the final three events.” Conditions didn’t seem to bother Switzerland’s Aline Danioth, who was the fastest woman of the day, with Germany’s Katrin HirtlStanggassinger in second and Slovenia’s Sasa Brezovnik in third. Danioth and HirtlStanggassinger each snagged medals just two weeks ago at the Winter Youth Olympic Games, Danioth in slalom and giant slalom and HirtlStanggassinger in alpine combined and giant slalom. The men struggled with even higher temperatures and among the most challenging conditions these men have tackled. “By the time the men started, the course was pretty torn up,” said Assistant Development Team Coach Justin Johnson, “The set was super-tight and had a lot of swing for a men’s super G and for the conditions. After 30 DNFs in the super G, we again lost half the field in slalom. It was an extremely difficult hill for an alpine combined.” Sam Morse (Sugarloaf, ME, U.S. Ski Team/Carrabassett Valley Academy/Sugarloaf Ski Club) was the lone American finisher in 13th,

while Drew Duffy was en route to a podium in second after the super G portion of the combined before going out halfway down the steep in slalom. After skyrocketing from bib 63 to 26th in the super G, Patrick Kenney (Hingham, MA, U.S. Ski Team/Burke Mountain Academy) also DNFed in slalom. World Juniors downhill champion Erik Arvidsson (Woodside, CA, U.S. Ski Team/Squaw Valley Ski Team/Bear Valley) also DNFed in the super G. Slovenia’s Stefan Hadalin was victorious, with Norway’s Marcus Monsen in second and Croatia’s Istok Rodes to follow in third. The Rosa Khutor alpine center appears to be alive and well with after the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, as the top juniors in the world have been welcomed by a good crowd of about 8-9,000 enjoying some free skiing at the now-popular resort and bringing the good energy with them. The Americans will look to soak in some of the energy from their surroundings and teammates into tomorrow’s team event. Slalom and giant slalom events will follow for the remainder of the week. Chambers Long History

Chamber of Commerce Serving Community for Over 60 Years

From the beginning, the chamber set it sights on promoting the town and village of Ellicottville, as well as championing various civic projects. The chamber was instrumental in bringing a new post office to the village.

Story by John Thomas Staff Writer America’s Chambers of Commerce go back to the very beginnings of the United States. The first Chamber of Commerce in the country was founded in New York City just before the Revolutionary War. The Ellicottville Chamber doesn’t go quite that far back, but in its nearly 70year history, it has had a significant impact on the town and village. It started out as the Ellicottville Club, an organization dedicated to making life in the village better. The first recorded meeting of the club was January 19th in 1948. The 31 members and three guests met at the Lincoln Hotel. Just a month after that, the club officially incorporated as the Chamber of Commerce, Ellicottville, New York. Its Board of Directors included some familiar names: Harold Burrell, Garland D. Stone, Walter Lawler, Dewitt Northrup, William Lowry, Ellis Reithmiller, Lawrence Taylor, and William Baker.

The operating budget for the first year was set at $1,760. From the beginning, the chamber set it sights on promoting the town and village of Ellicottville, as well as championing various civic projects. The chamber was instrumental in bringing a new post office to the village. Prior to that, the post office had been in the back of various stores on Washington. June 29, 1956, the new post office on Jefferson was dedicated. Also, of concern, that year was a petition to widen Monroe Street. The highway building boom in the late 1950’s saw the chamber become involved in efforts to bring skiers to town. In 1957 Holiday Valley was about to open and chamber minutes reflect its efforts to secure the building of highway 219. The route was proposed to travel from Buffalo, through town, and on to Miami Florida. (See cover story, 219 expansion.) Such a road would make it easier for Canadians to come here to ski. The chamber was frustrated when the federal

government refused to include funds for 219 in the Interstate Highway System bill. This was ironic because Bertram Tallamy, the Federal Highway Administrator, was a Buffalo native. The year 1968 brings the first mention of a Winter Carnival, which would grow into the annual Mardi Gras celebration. The first official Art Show and sale was held in 1973 at the corner of Washington and Jefferson. The following year the chamber dubbed it the first annual Fall Festival Art Show and Sale. Eventually, the show grew so large it spilled into the street, closing Washington for two days every Fall. For a while, Fall Festival included a “road race” or fun run (before it was common to designate a race by the length of the course, i.e. 5K) The 1980 winner was from London, Ontario: Don Howieson. In 1995, with Amy DeTine as President, the chamber established an ice skating rink in Village Park. Brian McFadden joined the chamber in 1994. At the time, the staff was entirely volunteer, with a single paid staff member who worked half days in the office. In August of 1998, a transition occurred when a professional staff took over operations. Brian McFadden was made Executive Director, and several staff positions were created. The emphasis of the chamber now is creating special events that will bring visitors to the village. McFadden’s goal is to make Ellicottville a four-season destination resort community. Civic improvements have become the province of the village and town governments. The next time you eat some great food at Taste or stretch out on Holiday Valley’s grass to hear a concert, you can thank an organization with a long history of service to the community.

On Saturday, March 5, Holiday Valley celebrated the wedding of two of their Safety Patrollers. Melanie Mitchell and Wade Knott skied down to the lean-to on Mistletoe to exchange vows in a ceremony officiated by fellow Patroller, Robin Kozlowski. Mrs. Mitchell’s son, Adam Silvernail, escorted her from the top of the Tannenbaum lift to the site at Mistletoe; her son, Alexander Silvernail, was Mr. Knott’s

best man, and Dawn Martin served as maid of honor. Close to a hundred friends and family members rode the chairlift up the mountain to share in the celebration, including Holiday Valley executive and administrative staff, Ski Patrollers from Holiday Valley and Holimont, and skiers who stopped out of curiosity and stayed for the cupcakes and hot cider. “We wanted to exchange our vows on the mountain

that is so special to us. We didn’t meet here, but Holiday Valley is where we truly found each other and where we fell in love,” said Melanie. “And the Valley was so considerate and kind in helping us make this happen. We had this idea but didn’t know if it was possible to have our wedding on the mountain. Holiday Valley said, ‘Yes,’ and assisted in every aspect. It wouldn’t have been possible without their help.” Mother Nature enhanced the romantic surrounding as well. Just before the couple arrived, a light, soft snow started falling that, along with the evergreens, provided an enchanting setting that many guests noted. After their vows and refreshments, the couple shared their first ski run as husband and wife down Mistletoe. The bride wore red velvet and pearls with Blizzard Brahmas affixed to Salomon boots. The groom wore a velvet tuxedo by Ralph Lauren, Dalbello boots, and B1 GS skis by Bomber. Stillhouse at a Stand Still

Villager Planning Board: Proposed Brewpub Needs Complete Plans Story by John Thomas Staff Writer Business plans for the Stillhouse Brewpub were tabled until William Bursee has a complete set of plans to submit to the board. He has been working with the new Town Planner, Gary Palumbo and will meet with Town Engineer Mark Alianello, to come up with a complete set of plans. Further action on the brewpub will wait until Mr.

Sochi Cont. From Page 7 HIGHLIGHTS: Galena Wardle and Patricia Mangan finished sixth and seventh, respectively, the first ever U.S. top 10 finishes in the alpine combined event at World Juniors. Wardle was the third U18 behind Switzerland’s Aline Danioth and Germany’s Katrin HirtlStanggassinger, who finished 1-2 in today’s race and both grabbed medals at the recent Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Sam Morse had a solid top 15 finish, landing in 13th in challenging conditions.

Bursee is ready. When the ZBA has approved his plans, he will have to submit them again to the Town Planning Board. In other business a couple from Townline Road appeared at the public hearing at the Zoning Board of Appeals to consider a garage they are planning to build on their property. Due to the layout of their property the best place to put the garage is within five feet of their property line. Zoning

codes for the area specify a side yard setback of 30 for any building on the property. The garage will be 24’ x 36’ and will include a workshop. The couple produced a letter from their next door neighbor stating that he had no problem with the garage or its placement. There were no members of the public present to make comment, and the public hearing was closed. A motion was made to grant the couple a variance, which passed.

The 2015 national super G champion Drew Duffy went from bib 32 to 2 in super G, before skiing out in slalom. QUOTES: Chip Knight, Alpine Development Director, It was a good day for the women today – great for Galena and Tricia to crack the top 10, and Nina’s 12th was positive too, as she posted the second fastest slalom time. Lots of DNFs in both runs today. Really warm weather here and conditions were soft already first thing in the morning for super G. The slalom held up better than expected, but it was on a steep pitch so it was technically very challenging. Frank Kelble, Women’s Europa Cup Head Coach, Though the conditions were

challenging, the ladies executed well and didn’t give up. They had lots of fight. We hope this gives the ladies some confidence going into the final three events. Justin Johnson, Men’s Development Team Assistant Coach, By the time the men started, the course was pretty torn up. The set was supertight and had a lot of swing for a men’s super G and for the conditions. After 30 DNFs in the super G, we again lost half the field in slalom. It was an extremely difficult hill for an alpine combined. The boys skied awesome today in tough conditions. Even though we didn’t necessarily get the results we wanted, dang, are these boys skiing well and coming together as a team!

Auto Builder Seeks Approval ZBA Votes on Home Based Business in Village May 10

Story by John Thomas Staff Writer

Mr. Edward Imhoff appeared before the Village Zoning Board on Tuesday night to begin the approval process for a special use permit for his home based business in the village. Mr. Imhoff’s decidedly unusual business consists of fabricating custom chassis for racing and sports cars. Mr. Imhoff is a former race car driver who is turning

his hobby into a full time endeavor. At one point he raced a 1989 Mustang, and over the years found himself modifying cars to meet his needs. Imhoff pointed out his business will consist primarily of bending special chromoly tubing to make the frames for custom cars. Although he says he can build a complete car from the ground up, for his business he will supply the custom chassis for other car builders. He was quick to point out that

the tube bender machine and special welding equipment he uses are much quieter than normal auto body machines. He added that he has built several chassis on his property and is on good terms with this neighbors. The board made a motion to hold a public hearing May 10 during the regular Zoning Board meeting. All neighbors within 200 feet of his home will be notified by mail of the public hearing. The meeting was adjourned.

ECS Budget Meeting Board of Education Votes April 5

By Sharon Turano

Ellicottville Central School District officials continue to put finishing touches on a budget for the next year before the school’s board of education votes on the spending plan April 5. During a Tuesday board workshop, officials said they still have a bit of shaving to do off the spending plan that has decreases in fuel, electric, gas, teacher retirement and unemployment insurance

costs. Increases are being seen in teacher aide costs, summer work, health insurance, expenses for a boiler, contracting with the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, athletics and musical instruments. Staff is still calculating costs and revenues, however, with meetings still to be held to review final figures and where some spending can be trimmed. An inventory of what musical instruments the district has and what it

needs, along with reviewing what it needs to contract with BOCES for, and what athletic costs are necessary are still to be reviewed. After the board of education adopts a budget April 5, a public hearing to outline the spending plan will be held before voters cast ballots on it in May. Also at the district, the musical, “The Wizard of Oz” will be performed at 7 pm March 10, 11 and 12 at the school.

This then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage. This class will be held on March 22nd from 6 – 8 pm. Registration is required due to limited class size. Come out & Vote on March 15th 12-9pm. This year over past is an extremely important time in the continuing progress of our small, bustling yet charming village. We are up against a formidable opponent this election year. One who has been Mayor in the past. I feel very strongly the need to keep the Village in the same positive path it has been on since I became Mayor 18 years ago. With all due respect, this person recently lost the Town Supervisor election. Recent accomplishments: • Recently received two grants which total over $1.3 million: One from the Environmental Facilities Corporation and another from NYSERTA. These will both be used to reduce the municipal bond on the sewer project. • Completed the shared services project with the Town of Ellicottville on the East Tank project. • The Streets and sidewalks are in great shape as we continue working to improve every year. • The Village Park has had all roofs replaced and we are in the process of repainting. New picnic tables have been purchased with the help of the Rotary Club, and new playground equipment for the children. - Purchased a new Backhoe and truck. - No new taxes in years. - Mayor salary is minimal and nobody on the Village Board including the Mayor receives Health insurance. In conclusion I love this village with all my heart, I am a family man, born and raised in the Village of Ellicottville. My wife, Sharon and I raised our three boy’s right here, and I am happily surrounded by my 11 grandchildren. I look forward to maintaining my position as Mayor for many more years to come, and serving the voters to the very best of my ability. Please vote Republican - Charles R. Coolidge – Mayor – and for Bob Brogcinski-Trusee and Patra Lowes-Trustee. Also, Charles R. CoolidgeMayor - for People’s Choice on the Independent line. *Paid Advertisment

Mardi Gras & Winter Carnival Weekend, Ellicottville’s Festival number two, is here. In spite of our on & off winter, the skiing at both Holiday Valley and HoliMont is still good. This will be another of the really FUN weekends that are provided for us by The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and further enhanced by Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival. Check out The Villager event line up and these two websites, www. holidayvalley.com and wwwellicottvilleny.com for more details. One more thing before we get going, Robby and I wish to say Happy Birthday to two of our grandchildren Caroline on March eleven and Devin March thirteen. We wish a very Happy Birthday to both of you. We love you. Like most festival weeks, our music and other FUN STUFF is also quite good. Starting today Thursday March 10, 2016 through Wednesday March 16, 2016 we will have twelve Bands doing sixteen shows, six DJ’s, The Ellicottville Mardi Gras Parade, Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival, plus all the great food and beverage specials that happen in our FUN clubs and eateries, making Ellicottville THE FUN place that it is. THURSDAY starts the week with two bands. The FUN begins at 8:00 PM in The Gin Mill with Fred & Tuck doing the first of their two show week. Neat and good time acoustic, folk rock to country music tunes, that are done in their unique style will, as always, create a really FUN Gin Mill Music Night. Then at 9:00 PM Thursday, Madigans will have The Party Squad, Buffalo’s Premier Party Rock Band, doing their first show of a three show weekend. They, as always, will be creating a wonderful night of classic rock tunes and FUN in Madigans Party Bar. The Party Squad always creates a really FUN Thursday in Madigans. FRIDAY, our Mardi Gras Weekend kicks off with five Bands and four DJ’s. One DJ will include karaoke. First at 6:00 PM The Rig will be performing in Madigans. Here we have a new to our area, five-piece Buffalo Band that does covers from The Rolling Stones to Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray and Van Morrison to The Clash. Their emphasis is to always create a great party time. Therefore,

Madigans will be ROCKIN this Friday. After The Rig, DJ Shane O’Mac will take over with Party Favorites till before midnight. Then Club Madigans will take over till close. Then at 7:00 PM, Balloons will have Breakaway on their music stage. Here we have a five-piece WNY Band that performs a wide variety of cover tunes from several eras, such as The Beatles, 70’s Funk, 80’s Hair Metal and tunes from the 90’s to today. Another FUN & entertaining Balloons Music Evening is on the way. Following Breakaway, a DJ will keep the FUN times rolling till close. Also at 7:00 PM as part of The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, Bacchus Ball, DJ Gilroy will be upstairs in The Ellicottville Brewing Company till 9:00PM Moving to 8:00 PM when Mark Gamsjager & The Lustre Kings will be doing their first of two shows this weekend on the main floor of The Ellicottville Brewing Company. This four piece traveling Band bills themselves as doing R&R The right way. They perform all over The U.S. digging deep into early Rock & Related Styles of Rock-ABilly to Gospel in a way that is totally entertaining. This will be a great EBC Show. Also at 8:00 PM, Friday, Kickstart Rumble will be ROCKIN Villaggio. Here we have a five-piece Original Band that also plays covers from the birth of R&R to today. Some of the covers you will hear are from Elvis, Chuck Berry, Stray Cats, Buddy Holly and many more. All of their music has their own twist to it. This will make another FUN music night in Villaggio happen. Then at 9:00 PM is when RT Live will be in the Gin Mill doing his neat acoustic version of many folk rock classics and country rock tunes that he does in his own unique style. When billed as RT Live, he should be a solo act. However, one or two other local musicians like Bongos Freddie and/or Retro Lil Joey The Spoon Goon usually join in. Also at 9:00 PM Friday The PUB in Great Valley will have DJ Felony and his Karaoke Show on stage. As always happens, this really neat show gives The PUB Patrons their regular two options. Be part of the show or just kick back and enjoy the music along with the Local & FUN PUB Good Music Times. SATURDAY, Mardi Gras continues in The Village and The Winter Carnival takes off at Holiday Valley. Plus we will have six more Bands and two DJ’s performing. We get started at 4:00 PM in Holiday Valley’s Yodeler Lodge with 10 Delaware on stage. 10 Delaware is a fourpiece Cover Classic Rock Band that does a neat music show consisting of tunes from the last thirty years or so. They also put a bit of their own twist on things, creating even more good listening. Back in The Village at 4:30

PM Saturday Balloons will have Cats On Holiday on their stage. This five-piece, hard rockin, swamp poppin, group was here last summer. They play an interesting blend of American Roots, Country, Cajun and Blues that again will have The Balloons crowd Rockin & Rollin all evening. Following Cats On Holiday a DJ will keep The Party going with FUN Danceable Tunes and Party Promo till close. A half hour later at 5:00 PM The Party Squad will return to Madigans for their second show of their three show weekend. Again, Buffalo’s Premier and best Party Rock Band will have Madigans Jumpin & ROCKIN. Following The Party Squad, DJ Cobra Con will play Madigans Party Favorites until Club Madigans takes over till close. Then at 6:30 PM The Mardi Gras Parade will take place on Washington Street here in The Village. We now roll to 8:00 PM and two more Bands. First The Lustre Kings will return to EBC for their second Rock-N-Roll to Gospel Show of this weekend. Mark Gamsjager & The Lustre Kings will continue with their version of R&R The right way, along with their dig into the early styles of Rock A Billy and Gospel. EBC will be ROCKIN again. Also at 8:00 PM Saturday Black Rock Zydeco will be performing in Villaggio. Here we have a six piece Cajun Creole Band that delivers a mix of original and favorite covers from classic and contemporary performers, along with vocal harmonies and an energetic stage presence that always creates a great crowd experience. Saturdays music becomes complete at 9:00 PM in The Gin Mill with Live & Kickin doing their Live Music for All Occasions show. This three-piece Gin Mill regular Rock N Roll band has been playing here for years. Like their promo says, they design their music to fit the crowd at hand. So another FUN Gin Mill Music Night is on the way. SUNDAY, will have two Bands performing. First at 4:00 PM Holiday Valley’s Yodeler Lodge will have The Party Squad on stage doing their annual Holiday Valley Winter Carnival show. Neat cover tunes done in their unique style will have The Winter Carnival crowd partying along with them for three hours. Then at 8:00 PM Fred & Tuck will be in The Gin Mill doing a copy of their regular Thursday gig. That being neat and good time acoustic, folk rock to country music tunes, that are done in their unique style. As always, they will create a really FUN Gin Mill Music & Party Night. MONDAY and TUESDAY will be music free in Ellicottville. However, Balloons will be serving their excellent Chicken Wings at See MUSIC page 14

Located on the Chautauqua Lake waterfront, EBC’s new location in Bemus Point will have an outstanding view. The brewery has purchased the building of the former Surf Club, on the intersection of Main Street and Lakeside Drive. This new location features plenty of outside seating to take in the picturesque scenery and all the lake has to offer. The building will seat between 160 and 170 people, and will boast a large deck on the front and side of the building with garage door entrances and roof top lounge. “Structurally, the design is fantastic,” says EBC owner Peter Krienheder. “It’s a really neat building.” Krienheder says the brewing company decided to open the location in Bemus because “it’s a great space and it was available; everything fell into place.” He felt it offered a good opportunity to “branch out the brand and give staff members a new opportunity for growth.” Krienheder is working with Nickolson Construction of Ellicottville on the project; Nickolson

lit with fireworks. Before that, however, music from some of the best known heroes and villains on television, movies and comics will fill the air with characters on hand as part of the show. Sunday night, “Hold On Loosely” as 38 Special takes to the stage slope side. Offering up their signature sound of Southern Rock, 38 Special performs to over 100 cities a year. Come out and experience the still-explosive power of the band’s performance of hits like “Caught Up in You,” “Back Where You Belong,” and “Wild Eye’d Southern Boy.” Before 38 Special takes the stage, Buffalo native, turned Nashville recording artist, Caitlin Koch will return to the stage. Caitlin has shared stages with, and opened for, artists such as Grace Potter, Brantley Gilbert, The B52s, Pat Benatar, Tears for Fears, Colt Ford, Danielle Bradbery, the late Lance Diamond,

Matt Giraud, The Scintas, T. Graham Brown, C.O. Jones, and many others. Caitlin was featured on Simon Cowell’s production “The X Factor USA” on Fox network in 2011. Today, Caitlin continues performing live nationally. Saturday and Sunday will also have the events in the Village during the day. Both, Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-5pm, Jefferson Street will be the home to the annual Arts and Crafts Show. The Annual Pet Parade will be held Saturday at 11am on Washington Street and the Strawberry Festival will take place at the Village Gazebo from noon until 3pm. Not only will there be music at Holiday Valley but at the Village Gazebo, from 1-4pm on Friday and Saturday. Check the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce website for more details and to order your concert tickets. Go to www. ellicottvilleny.com or call (716) 699-5046 for more info.

cookout (10am-5pm) at the base of Yodeler, and, of course, the world-famous Mountain Crew Snowbar from noon-4:30pm. Creekside Lodge will be the home to the Snowsports Olympic Relay from 1:303:30pm. Back up at Yodeler, from 4-8pm, 10 Delaware will be playing. Head down to the Village for what looks to be an amazing parade up Washington Street, starting at 6:30pm. Walking groups and floats will make their way from Madigans to the Village Hall! A wandering band of musicians and dancers, sponsored by Ellicottville Brewing Company, will make their way around the area at that time as well. Sunday moves back up to Holiday Valley with the Ski

Patrol Pancake Breakfast at the top of Champagne Warming Hut at 9am. Fun on the slopes starts with the costume parade at noon with all kinds of fun and food outside of the Main Lodge. The Snowbar will once again be open at Yodeler from noon-4:30pm as well. At 2pm, made famous on ESPN, the Downhill Dummy contest will take place at the base of yodeler. Come out to see people dress up their dummies and send them down the hill for fun. From 4-8pm, Party Squad will be playing at Yodeler to close out the weekend. Come out and see another thing that makes Ellicottville easy to find, hard to leave. For more information, visit Ellicottvilleny.com or holidayvalley.com.

also did the expansion and renovations at the EBC Ellicottville location. A new opportunity for growth, indeed: Chautauqua is a goldmine for the arts during the summer months. Their summer program schedule includes performances by The Temptations and The Four Tops, LeAnn Rimes, The Avett Brothers, and Huey Lewis and The News, as well as performances by the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the New York Brass Arts Trio; and that is just in Chautauqua Institution itself; there are performances and attractions every week across the lake. What do entertainers, writers, artists, and philosophers all have in common- the love of discussing ideas and enjoying art in every form over well-made brews and bites. By opening a location in Chautauqua County, the Ellicottville Brewing Company will place itself at the epicenter of some of the finest artistic work in New York State. Being among so much creativity, it’s not surprising that EBC plans to work on their own craft. “We’ll have a nano-brewery on site for experimentation,” says Krienheder. Eventually, the brewery plans to have an education program in the Chautauqua Institution itself. Because the location already boasts so much live

music and art performances, Krienheder says they will “temper the water” when it comes to hosting their own live music. “We’ll work with [Chautauqua’s] schedule, maybe occasionally have something postseason,” Krienheder says. Chautauqua’s summer season ends on August 28. Krienheder says he is not sure yet if the brewery will remain open this season past November or December. Many of Chautauqua’s shops and restaurants do close for the winter and open again in the spring, when the weather is more accommodating. As far as the menu goes, Krienheder says the food will be similar to the Ellicottville location with a “summery flair.” It won’t fit under one specific category, like seafood or Mexican, but will have a mix of different types of foods. What the brewery does best, according to Krienheder, is craft, so the restaurant will focus on that: authentic, delicious appetizers and well-crafted beers. Krienheder says they will have some domestics and wines on hand as well. Customers can expect the same great taste and fine service characteristic of the Ellicottville location. Krienheder is excited about Ellicottville Brewing Company’s newest endeavor. “It’s a great location, with so many places to walk around. I’m looking forward to people giving it a shot.”

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Cont. From Cover is that people don’t come to Ellicottville because there is no place to park a car.” At one point the village looked into establishing a parking lot, but it proved financially unfeasible, he tells me. Like the mayor, Mr. Brogcinski feels the next biggest challenge is completing the remodel of the Village’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The statemandated project is expected to cost $5.2 million. “It’s a bear for a small municipality to be able to withstand those kinds of costs.” He goes on to say the challenges regarding the village’s sewer system are going to continue. “We’ve got some deteriorating pipes that are going to have to be replaced. We’re not done with it.” So far, with the assistance of some state grants, the work on the treatment plant has gone forward without increasing taxes or water bills. Finally, Brogcinski says the sharing of services is something that should be expanded. He says the new Town Supervisor; Matt McAndrew has reached out regarding sharing of expenses. “Whether it be in shared building expenses or road repair. That’s important to keep the village’s finances viable”. Joey DiPasquale Joe DiPasquale is another longtime Ellicottville resident.

musicians, who also perform here in Ellicottville as The Hick-ups. Madigans Taco Tuesday is next. Jay’s excellent Tacos served at only one dollar, makes Madigans a neat place to visit on Tuesday. WEDNESDAY at 8:00 PM our music week rounds out in The Gin Mill with Joe Wagner & John Winston returning to do

their traditional, acoustic, classic, folk to southern rock music show. This Gin Mill Wednesday tradition of music & FUN will sometimes have another local musician like Retro Lil Joey, from The Spoony Goony Home, join in making an even more FUN Gin Mill Wednesday happen. C.U. Round The Music Scene Good Stuff No Worries.

He’s the first to acknowledge that all the people running for office are “upright outstanding citizens.” That two of the candidates are incumbents doesn’t bother him a bit saying, “Sometimes you need a pair of fresh eyes looking at the problem.” He says parking and the duplication of town and village services are two problem areas he would like to tackle. He adds that the lack of parking has always been put in the laps of someone else to solve. Mr. DiPasquale feels that the village would benefit from a closer relationship with HoliMont and Holiday Valley since most of the businesses in town benefit from the skiers they bring in. For the most part, DiPasquale has been happy with the way the village and town have been run for the past few years. But then he adds that some issues have bee put on the “back burner” for too long. As for what residents can do, he says people should go to board meetings, “when times are good, and not just to complain.” As far as his personal goals go, he tells me; he’s just “trying to be a better citizen.” Patra Lowes Village Board member and Special Events Chairperson Patra Lowes is up for reelection to the Village Board. She attended art school in Rochester and moved to Ellicottville in 1981. Patra was appointed to a vacancy and won her first term on the Village Board almost 30

years ago. In an effort to get a handle on the various special events happening in the village, the board formed the Special Events Committee in 2004, and Ms. Lowes became its chair. She has been so ever since. A lifelong skier, she sees the larger mission of the Village Board as “keeping the integrity of the community and that true ski town charm.” Patra also has the perspective of downtown businesses. She works at The City Garage, the ski shop on Monroe, owned by Sean and Elizabeth Lowes. In addressing the growth of the community, Ms. Lowes says it’s important to “strengthen our village commercial area, and keep it connected to the village.” By that she means avoiding the “absentee ownership, strip mall look,” that building retail areas outside downtown could create. She emphasizes that keeping businesses locally owned and operated balances the sense of community while respecting both residents and visitors alike. Lastly, Ms. Lowes says one of the jobs the Village Board has accomplished is “keeping the budget in check” and striving to keep on top of our everchanging community. On March 15th, the village will have a chance to elect a mayor and two board members. All are longtime village residents. Whoever wins, the citizens of the Village of Ellicottville can be assured their government will be in good hands.

Beat on the Street:

What is the Silliest or Dumbest Quote by a Politician You’ve Ever Heard or Read? By CFN Once again America is in her four-year cycle of choosing a puppet to be lead by the big money corporations that rule this land. The media is a frenzy with their one sided journalism, trying to sway the American populace to vote the way they see would best fit America. And after the elections and the chosen politician takes office he/ she is ridiculed incessantly by the faction that didn’t vote for them. Many times the politico’s words will be used against them to make them look too incompetent to be in office. The media is a grand resource for the ruling elite. There is no way the mass population would know anything about the goings on in Washington and the world if it wasn’t for the mass media. They inform us of everything those running the government offices are doing or what they want us to think they are doing. The secrecy is rampant too, but there is so much information those enigmas are easily forgotten, especially when an official is recorded saying something idiotic or just plain mindless. What is the silliest or dumbest quote by a politician you’ve ever heard?

Joe C.- Donald Trump- “I know words, I have the best words.”

Kevin M.- G.W. Bush “It’s your money, you paid for it!”

Ben S.- Bill Clinton- “It depends on what the meaning of the word “is” is”

Cont. From Cover With the passage of the FAST Act (Fixing America’s Surface Transportation) of 2015, $305 billion in federal funds have been set aside for various transportation projects in the US. Of that money $16 billion has been earmarked for projects in New York State over the next five years. In her comments, Ms. Abers stated that New York Senator Cathy Young, leader of the Senate Finance Committee, is a staunch supporter of the route. Abers said that county, state, and federal representatives have all aligned to support the construction of the north/south section in New York. State Representative Joseph Giglio was in attendance as well as representatives from Senator Young and Congressman Tom Reed. “This is what we’ve all been waiting for. This is a game changer,” said Meg Lauerman, Executive Director of Continental 1, of the federal appropriation. The first order of business for the committee was the selection of a chairman. Salamanca resident Hugh Dunn’s name was placed in nomination. Mr. Dunn was elected by acclimation. “It’s quite and honor,” said Dunn as he accepted the position. Although Mr. Dunn is a resident of Salamanca, he is

well known in Ellicottville. The group is promoting construction of Section 12, the latest proposed section of four-lane road between Killbuck and the Southern Tier Expressway. According to federal regulations, further study of the route must be done before any construction can begin. There are several obstacles: the route runs through wetlands on the Seneca reservation, and must cross the Allegany River and two railroad tracks. The estimated cost of the study and construction of the 1.8-mile route is expected to be between $90 and $100 million. Mr. Henry Cook, President of Continental 1 and of Somerset Trust Co in Somerset, Pennsylvania, has been working on getting 219 built through his county for close to 30 years. There are currently 11 miles of Route 219 under construction just to the south of Somerset, and an additional 7 miles being engineered from Meyersdale, PA to south of I-68 in Maryland. Even with this progress, Cook said, “This is the single most frustrating thing in my life, and I have teenage daughters.” He described the obstacles he has encountered in his quest to build the highway. “America doesn’t like funding rural projects,” he said. Then he added that funding for urban projects is much easier to obtain. Most of the expressways built during the

highway building boom of the 1950’s were east-west, and there are still difficulties in building north-south transportation corridors. “If Toronto was within the US, there would be no problem,” he said. Cook pointed out that building efficient transportation routes enhances interstate commerce and tourism, which means jobs are created along the route. Currently the four lane section of 219 runs between I-90 in Lackawanna and the newly completed bridge over Cattaraugus Creek, just south of Springville. At that point the road continues on the old twolane section into Ellicottville and Salamanca. Those living along the route consider that section dangerous; about three people per year are killed in traffic accidents on it. Interstate highways have been proven to be twice as safe as 2-lane highways. The Continental 1 route when completed, will link existing interstate highways with Route 219 to form a 1500 mile, trade and travel corridor between Toronto, Canada and Miami, Florida. The 219 Corridor Development Committee is urging members of the public to write their representatives in government, including the governor, to urge completion of the New York sections of the expressway. Story time is every Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. At The Ellicottville Memorial Library. Elijah S.- G.W. Bush“Fool me once shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can’t get fooled again.”

Team VP Launches New Brand: “Teamwork. Trust. Results.”

By Carol Fisher

It’s Crunch time, folks. Retailers, restaurants, banks, etc., if your windows aren’t decorated yet, get into the spirit and string some beads, put out some masks and information about yourself to let our visitors know that this is our week to tell them how wonderful they are to support all we offer in Ellicottville and on our slopes. This is our week to shine. It’s our week to show our stuff and reveal who we are beneath the glitter of the sparkling winter snow and the seasonal activities we offer. Use your windows to tell your personal story… how you started, and how you fit into the Ellicottville scene today. Remember, Friday night is BACCHUS BALL night at EBC (Ellicottville Brewing Company) where, if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, you can purchase them at the door. $20 will admit you into EBC’s upstairs Mardi Gras eye-popping, magical wonderland where the winter weekend is kicked off in Ellicottville style. We are ski casual or costume this year since it’s our inaugural event. But, it promises to lead to bigger, better and fancier ones in the future. Imagine wearing a tux and fancy gown in Ellicottville again! It’s happened before, you know. Why should the folks in the sixties have had all the fun? We’re ready to do likewise and surpass the fun of the Hardware Heights Ball which was held above what is now Adventure Bound On The Fly. It is our committee’s goal to once

New this year the Bacchus Ball Friday Night at the Ellicottville Brewing Company. This is your opportunity to experience an eye-popping magical wonderland to kick off the weekend and vote for the King and Queen. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door. The fun gets started at 7pm.

again make that ticket the most sought after prize of the season. Join us this year and one day be able to say, “I was at the first Ball.” On Saturday, be sure to be in town early enough (by 5-5:30) to park off of Main Street, which closes to all parking at 5:30. Grab a bite to eat or shop the many sales the stores will be offering. BRING THE KIDS. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY event. I suggest you get some food in them before the parade because I guarantee they will be filling up on the candy handed out by the marchers. The parade lines up by 6pm and the whistle blows at 6:30 sharp.

Be there! Right smack on our historic Main Street! We have a dozen floats and hundreds, yes, HUNDREDS of marchers to entertain you. Grab a rain jacket in case it drizzles, but we will be there, rain or snow, to strike up the band! Lots of fun is in store! Now, be sure to look through the articles and ads of The Villager to discover all of the other fun-filled events for this weekend. Holiday Valley has a great week planned for skiers and non-skiers, and HoliMont has a whole week of fun scheduled. No matter what you like to do in Ellicottville, my bet is, we’ve got you covered!

ERA Team VP Real Estate & Vacation Rentals recently launched a bold new brand campaign featuring a new tagline: “Teamwork. Trust. Results.” “We tasked ourselves with developing a tagline consistent with our brand which speaks to our commitments to the markets in which we serve,“ states Rachael Wiley-Steffen, Director of Corporate Marketing & Vacation Rental Management. “Together, we are building greater relationships and opportunities for success within the Real Estate and Vacation Rental markets.” This tagline “Teamwork.

Trust. Results.” includes three foundational terms that convey the mission and vision of ERA Team VP, while encompassing what the Real Estate & Vacation Rental firm strives to provide on a daily basis for staff, agents, and customers alike. The tagline emerged from an in-depth process of strategic planning executed by the ERA Team VP leadership team. “What excites me most about adding “Teamwork. Trust. Results.” to the ERA Team VP brand, is the process we used to develop this new tagline. Every single member of our team, from sales and

rental agents, to support staff, to leadership, contributed ideas and feedback about who we are as an organization,” said Bill Soffel, President/ CEO. “I truly believe that “Teamwork. Trust. Results.” is a genuine reflection of what ERA Team VP is all about, and is also what we strive to achieve for our clients and customers every single day.” The evolved brand follows a successful year for ERA Team VP, as the firm achieved a record number of closed sales transactions in 2015. Additionally, fully integrating all real estate agents to the ZAP platform, a new innovative online website and contact management system. First unveiled for staff and agents at the annual ERA Team VP Year End Awards Banquet, held this past month at the Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca NY, the new brand tagline has already been rolled out across the company’s online platforms including social media and electronic communications, as well as multiple printed publications. Updates to other brand touch points are also underway and will continue through 2016. For more information about ERA Team VP Real Estate & Vacation Rentals visit www. Burke Contracting, LLC

Story and Photo By John Thomas Staff Writer Sorry folks the first thing I have to say about this week’s featured home is that it is not for sale. Actually, it is the model home for the Sundance development on Witch Hollow Road. The

site is being developed by Pat Burke, a local contractor. Pretty much anybody can build a custom home, but it takes a special sense of style to build a home that stands out from the rest. Twenty years of building custom homes have given Mr. Burke a special instinct for the finishing

touches that make all the difference. The model home is pretty much your basic three bedroom twobath home with a large open plan great room. But it’s the details and the choice of materials that make it a standout. Cherry hardwoods are lavishly used throughout the home. Everywhere,

from the wainscoting to the window trim, the stairs and floors, glow with the warmth of cherry. The second story great room has a river stone nickel plated fireplace that can hold up to threefoot logs. In the kitchen cherry cabinets mingle with brushed stainless steel appliances and chestnut

granite counters. The baths are finished with imported Italian tile. Outside on the top floor, a large deck wraps around two sides the house and takes in the wooded view. The ground floor is warmed by radiant floor heating. The floors glimmer with the richness of imported Italian tiles, giving the floors

the look of a European spa. This home is the best kind of alchemy. The Sundance Homes development is just a two miles from downtown Ellicottville and just seconds to skiing at Holiday Valley. For more information, contact Pat Burke at 716378-4223.

Insider’s Guide to E’Ville’s Mardi Gras Celebration By Chad Neal

Another winter season has passed us by here in Ellicottville, and it was a short one too compared to others in the recent past. The snow finally arrived and the skiing and riding commenced. The usual suspects showed up and some new faces popped in to check out the scene. The weather was cooperating for the most part, as we got some nice dumps of snow and cold

enough weather to allow the snow making crews to do their job and pile the whales up for the groomers to spread out on the hills, and they have their annual huge pile set up at the bottom of Yodeler at Holiday Valley too, to build the epic snow bar that draws huge crowds every year. The events that happen at the end of every year in Ellicottville during this Mardi Gras/ Winter Carnival celebration make the end of the season

not so bittersweet, but real fun. The party will be rocking through Sunday evening starting Thursday night. For the most part a great family event but when the sun goes down, the adult activities will ensue at the bars downtown, especially Saturday night post Mardi Gras parade on Washington Street. Here are few places in the village to give you an idea of what to expect this Mardi Gras celebration weekend.

The Villaggio

7 Monroe St., Ellicottville, NY • (716) 699-2199 The Villaggio is the fresh new place that took over the Barn Restaurant this past fall. Owner Nick Pitillo, is a native of Ellicottville and knows the ins and outs of this town and the restaurant business as he also has a fine dining restaurant in Buffalo called Osteria 166. The Villaggio has taken Ellicottville by storm with their excellent menu items, pasta bar and wonderful tight-nit crew of back of the house and front of the house employees. The Villaggio has had a movie night every week and is also a great place to learn about wines on their Wines-Day, when they pair wines with dishes and explain

the different tastes and bouquets of food and wines. They are ready for the Mardi Gras celebration this weekend as well with plenty of live music and specials all weekend long. Along with other joints around the village they are entering the Dummy Downhill and will have a float during the Mardi Gras parade Saturday evening. They will be serving a Gumbo Special all weekend long and Hurricane drink specials as well. “With beads galore!” Their live music starts Friday Night at 9pm with Kickstart Rumble, Saturday at 9pm with Black Rock Zydeco and Sunday afternoon at 5pm with Michael Disanto.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. 28-30 Monroe St., Ellicottville, NY • (716) 699-2537 The Ellicottville Brewing Company aka EBC is also gearing up right for this upcoming Mardi Gras celebration. Entering it’s 21st year of business, the EBC has grown exponentially since it’s doors were opened in 1995. The original craft brews are still part of the line up, but as with every professional craftsman, the creative spark has to be available to start new and awesome beers. Many different recipes have been dabbled with and enjoyed. They also do seasonal brews as well and this weekend as part of the Mardi Gras celebration they are having a “Kick the Keg”

Mardi Gras Weekend: March 12 & 13, 2016 : Ellicottville NY

party selling 20 oz. Winter Lagers and 20 oz. ‘Hang Time’ to make room for the next seasonal craft brews Dan Minner and crew will be making. Also Friday night they are hosting the “Bacchas Ball in the Private Dining Room, it is like a masquerade Ball for the “Coronation of the King and Queen of Ellicottville for the weekend.” It starts at 7pm and is a family friendly event and tickets are $20/ person. For their live entertainment both Friday and Saturday in the Igloo (an outdoor tent that connects to the Patio Bar) the Lustre Kings will be rocking starting at 8pm.

Insider’s Guide to E’Ville’s Mardi Gras Celebration

Madigan’s

44 Washington St, Ellicottville, NY • (716) 699-4455

Another staple in Ellicottville affectionately known as “The Green Bar” because of it’s Irishness, is

Madigan’s. A popular spot in the middle of the village with the longest bar in town upstairs, along with it’s patio bar and outside seating for summer enjoyment, this establishment has been around for over 34 years. Known more for its nightlife and party, Madigan’s has and is becoming a place known for it’s menu and food more and more. With chef Jay Buchhardt planning the menu and making the delicious dinners on Friday and Saturday night, not to mention the daily specials and housemade soups that are to die for, Madigan’s is

becoming more popular for it’s food. A secret little place to enjoy super good food, and when it’s time to party the crew has the gusto to show everyone a good time as well. This weekend starts off the Mardi Gras celebration with the ever popular Party Squad starting at 9pm upstairs on Thursday, Friday night on the stage upstairs is The Rig starting at 9pm and again on Saturday Party Squad will rock the afternoon happy hour shift playing from 5:30 to 9:30. Sunday night management is calling for a karaoke contest to finish out the weekend starting at 7pm.

The Gin Mill

20 W Washington St., Ellicottville, NY• (716) 699-2530 The Gin Mill is a staple for most of the people who come to Ellicottville. New visitors and seasoned veterans alike flock to the Gin Mill for their constant live music in their front windows, the nostalgic décor all over the inside of the building and the atmosphere it beholds. The menu is another superior item they are proud of. They are now serving breakfast as well until 11:30am and have a great array of different breakfast foods to choose from including the house-made corned beef hash and crispy hash

browns. The weekly line up local artists playing rock, country and folk favorites is another reason the Gin Mill is so famous. Being well versed in the Mardi Gras celebration here in Ellicottville, the Gin Mill will also have live music all weekend long starting Thursday night. Friday night and Saturday night will be jamming live music too. For more information on who is playing check out Sherm and Robbie’s Music Spotlight on page12 in this edition of The Villager.

Balloons Restaurant

Restaurant & Nightclub • 20 Monroe St. • (716) 699-4162

Ellicottville will be full of fun loving folks this weekend celebrating the Mardi Gras weekend and Winter Carnival at Holiday Valley. The weather is calling for some really mild temperatures this weekend

Balloons has grown as well in the past couple years but has kept its atmosphere the same. With the new Back Bar having plenty of seating and bar space the front end has more room for live music to showcase the many talents Mike Kerns Jr. has brought into the place. The menu is a delicious endeavor that among others, features the special .25-cent wings on Monday nights. The crew at Balloons is swift and friendly as well, and when the live music is playing and the people are dancing the drinks and food still flows with precision and a smile. And on the weekends after the live music

the DJ plays the crowd like a top. Being one of the three top nightlife joints in Ellicottville, bringing in the national outfits to play on the stage is definitely making it a destination spot in the village. This weekend they are not stopping either. Live music during the weekend is key and the Mardi Gras celebration is going to prove their grasp on the live music scene. Friday at 7pm they will have a “rock, funk and modern music style band’ called the Breakaway and Saturday at 4:30pm a funky zydeco band from Cleveland, Cats on Holiday will take the stage.

which might bring out even more excited people. Every year is different and this year was a great one with the new spot in town the Villaggio who brought in a new fun place to eat and drink and be merry. The

parade on Saturday will be exciting and the party into the evening with plenty of beads and good times to be had will leave the blurry memories in heads for years to come. Be safe and enjoy the celebration.
