Holiday Valley Update ... Pg. 5 Chatting with Visitors: Jessie McNulty

The winter season has officially begun and things are looking great out on the slopes. This past weekend brought new and familiar faces to enjoy the winter sports that Holiday Valley has to offer. I took some time to chat with a rider that has been riding Holiday Valley since grade school. Jess McNulty is from Williamsville, New York and visits Holiday Valley on the regular and happened to come down the official opening weekend of the slopes!

Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas This Friday, December 6 at EBC... Pg. 3

For 14 years, Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas fundraiser has become an event to remember, and one that locals and weekenders alike don’t miss. McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside of EBC starting around 7 a.m., where new toys and unwrapped gifts are collected for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriffs Santa Program, which provides gifts to make Christmas a little special for less fortunate families. Many of us know how small our little village is, but what many of us forget is how many people come to visit and start to fall in love with this place. In just three short years, Sam Nelson has grown her business, Ellicottville Events, into a known entity all through Western New York. She works with a team of five others who help on/during events. Many of the events are higher end, mainly focusing on weddings, along with showers, holiday parties, and corporate events. Sam has been in Ellicottville for seven years now, along with her husband and son. Event planning was something Sam always enjoyed. She started out planning her own wedding, an 80s themed extravaganza (I was lucky enough to be a guest). Her wedding planning happened all within three months and as she stated, “It was See “EVENTS” Page 8

Publisher’s Word “Winter Wonderland” you stroll through town this weekend you will be greeted by carolers and elves. You will have the opportunity to take a horse drawn carriage ride and to mingle with Santa. You can watch the beloved Reindog parade and even pet a live camel. The grand finale this Saturday is the Living Nativity at the Gazebo at 5:30. This weekend the giving tradition continues with Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas, Friday December 6 at EBC. It is another opportunity to experience a unique event, enjoy the nostalgia of a small town and give back to the community that makes you feel so good. This weekend is a spectacular showcase of what Ellicottville is every day: a close-knit community that has the ability to keep such traditions alive. That ability is missing in newer, bigger communities and it is truly something special you can see and feel

Cameron Hurst Shares Stories Of Healing From St. Bonaventure University

Hurricane Florence,” he said. Another anecdote that lingers with Hurst is how Cory and Amanda Westbrook, owners of Chosen Grove Farm, in Canandaigua, New York, donated a “Bona Batch” of pasture-raised chickens for the Warming House, the university’s student-run soup kitchen. “Amanda graduated from Bona’s and worked as a volunteer at the Warming House. They felt donating the ‘Bona Batch’ would be a creative way of giving back,” he said. Hurst covered these stories and others for the latest issues of the Warming House and FCSC newsletters. “Through volunteer work with the center’s programs, students and alumni realize the remarkable gift of giving,” he said. “And the people receiving a hand up experience hope and fellowship.” Hurst works with the FCSC as a development associate. When he was 16, with no high school newspaper available, Hurst shadowed a mentor at Jamestown’s Post-Journal, hungry to learn journalism. By 17 he became a stringer with the newspaper and an awardwinning sports blogger. Today he’s happy to put his skills to work for the FCSC. “I can use my ability to write to help effect change,” Hurst said. Alice Miller Nation, FCSC director, has enjoyed having Hurst as an associate this semester as the center prepares for its second annual #GivingTuesdayatBonas

Cameron Hurst

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., Dec. 2, 2019 — Cameron Hurst knows the power of a good story. That’s why the St. Bonaventure University senior journalism and music double major from Jamestown, New York, is eager to share the stories of helping and healing found within the many programs of the Franciscan Center for Social Concern (FCSC). Hurst said he has been transformed by interviews with alumni who have devoted a lifetime to service and by stories of Bona students who have worked with orphans in Guatemala or tended food from farm to table. “It’s really given me an appreciation of the programs at Bona’s and how impactful they are,” he said. “Lives are being changed.” Hurst pointed to the story of technology executive Mark Schmitt, a 1984 Bona grad, who took a sabbatical from professional life in 2018 to explore the world and give back. “His story is really incredible. Among other acts of service, he worked with the Red Cross in the Carolinas for several weeks following

fundraising initiative on Dec. 3. “Cameron came to us as a second semester senior, eager to learn about the FCSC and its impact on both our students and the greater Olean community. His positive attitude and hunger to more deeply experience our mission as it impacts the lives of others has been delightful to encounter each day,” Miller Nation said. “He’s been a huge help as we hope to raise $40,000 for our social justice, advocacy and service programs on campus.” The community is invited to visit www.sbu.edu/ GivingTuesdayatBonas to learn more and to donate. For Hurst, working with the FCSC has been a turning point. “It’s given me insight on the importance of giving back,” he said. “A donation gives those served a place to go and an experience to hold onto. And for people like myself, it gives the opportunity to gain skills in areas of interest like communications and have the experience of working in a nonprofit.” About the University: The nation’s first Franciscan university, St. Bonaventure University is a community committed to transforming the lives of our students inside and outside the classroom, inspiring in them a lifelong commitment to service and citizenship. In 2019, St. Bonaventure was named the #1 regional university value in New York and #2 in the North by U.S. News and World Report.

About the specifics Eshbaugh answered, “ The date is Saturday, December 14th from 9am-3pm in the plaza around the clock tower, slope-side of the Main Lodge. It is free to try the skis and snowboards, but you need a lift ticket for the slopes. You’ll also need a credit card to use for a deposit. Nominees needed a minimum of twelve votes to become a finalist. Once finalists were chosen, they had to submit supporting evidence of their endeavors: Sam submitted testimonials, information about her business, community participation, photos, and even shared her own wedding magazine she created. More than one hundred wedding specialists gathered at this event to find out the champions of the 1st New York Wedding Awards. to bring awareness that you are a very community central business. Shane Stweard (S): Indeed we are and that is a misconception about HarleyDavidson these days. In fact they introduced the IRONe® not too long ago because they want to build riders from the ground up. (You can visit the website listed to see what he means https://gowandaharley. com/electric-balance-bikes) V: What prompted the idea to host a family friendly event such as Pictures with Santa? S: Pictures with Santa has been a long standing tradition for Gowanda HarleyDavidson®. I started here 3 years ago and there were young adults at the photo shoots then that said they have been coming here since they were babies. That speaks volumes on how long this has been taking place. V: So how many years has this been taking place and what is your turnout typically like? S: This event has evidence as far as pictures going back at least 30 years. You can expect to see a long line that lasts most of the day. We took over a hundred photos last year so you can say the turnout is huge. V: How do you feel this event affects the community? I saw you accept donations for Toys For Tots/Food Pantry

etc… S: I feel like any tradition of this kind, you can’t help but feel the sense of community and the Christmas spirit that comes along with it. In terms of the Food Drive and Toy Drive, we do quite well and have loads of food and toys by the end of the push - which is December 13th this year. V: What are your personal feelings on the event? S: I love it! It’s hard getting entire families to smile, keep their eyes open and keep them (the parents) from crying. V: Do you have any more events like this planned for the future? S: Gowanda HarleyDavidson® always has events. After Pictures with Santa we have “Rock and Shop”, featuring live music on December 14th and our “Last Minute SHOP-A-THON” on December 21st and 22nd. Then we have at least one event a month and will be sitting down soon to plan 2020. That info will always be available on gowandaharley.com and on Gowanda Harley Facebook site. We are also building out our sister site for all things off-road that aren’t Harley… www.zoarvalleymotorsports. com So come on down to Gowanda Harley-Davidson and share some Christmas cheer with their family and yours. Everyone is welcome!!

made by local Senior Citizens groups are distributed, and Santa has gifts for the children, including handmade, traditional wooden toys donated by Richard Hall. There are games to play, prizes to win, and a goodie bag for every child. The goal is that these kids leave smiling with warm, satisfied tummies and a bag full of Christmas cheer. This event had its beginnings when Angel Fisher, Executive Assistant at Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc. came on the scene in 2005. She immediately noted a “hole” when it came to something special just for the younger kids at the holidays, and had a wonderful, fantastical, Santaish idea. Given the green light by CEO Tina Zerbian, she started that first year with a small group of attendees, and now, thirteen years later, with 240 “interested” clicks on Facebook, they expect a large turnout. When bad weather was brought up, Angel (appropriately named) laughed, saying, “One year there was a terrible blizzard. It was our best year ever!” You see, like Santa’s sleigh, nothing can stop the pure holiday spirit. Ms. Fisher was clear to point out that this event takes place through the generosity of companies like Urban Auto Center, Central Lanes and many, many bighearted donors from across the county who prefer to remain anonymous, and the many enthusiastic volunteers who turn this event into

an afternoon of Christmas wonder. The history of Community Action goes back many years. 55 years ago, President L.B. Johnson declared a war on poverty. His goal was to relieve, cure and prevent poverty. Cattaraugus County joined that fight by incorporating the Cattaraugus Community Action in June 1965. To this day, Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc. partners with the community to provide strengths-based opportunities for vulnerable people to achieve economic, physical, and emotional security, including a 24-hour Victim Services Hotline – 1-888-945-3970. CCA programs assist county residents in need with emergency homeless shelter and transitional services, Food Stamps (SNAP), senior and disability housing, parenting workshops and youth services, home repair and management, and victim and mental health services. If you find yourself facing utility shutoff or eviction notices or are in a temporary position of need, it takes only a call or a visit to their offices to see what they can do to help you get back on our feet. Their phone number is 9451041. If you wish to pay a personal visit, no appointment is necessary. You can meet with someone any time, Monday through Friday, from 9am to 5pm. Don’t forget to mark that party date on your calendars – 12/12, 3pm.

“I’ve been banking with CCB since I was 8 years old! I bank at CCB in Little Valley three or four times a week and the staff is always great. CCB’s advantage in building customer relationships is their focus on commitment to community. When I needed a loan to make improvements to my business and build my house, CCB was top-of-mind. Everything with the loan process went as expected with no surprises and CCB’s staff was always available if I had questions along the way.”

Beat on the Street: What is the Best Cure for a Hangover? By Chad Neal

There are those of us who imbibe in the spirits. And when we over indulge in said imbibing a punishment awaits us upon awaking. The hangover is a manyheaded monster. The body is sluggish and achy, the brain is discombobulated,

the eyes blurry and then there is the pain… the pain all throughout the head. For centuries man has tried to cure the disease of hangover and only to some avail. Anyone who has hung in the over has tried a remedy or two or more. What is the best cure for a hangover?

Darlene A. - Magnesium.

Spencer M. - Sleep on the couch with the Price is Right.

Mark S. - I used to eat about six popsicles.
