Years ago, the Four Lads out of Canada put it all so well in their hit song, “We will have these moments to remember.” For local community members, Chuck and Patti Crist, a special night in Buffalo was a lifetime in the making and ended, as these moments do, all too quickly. The couple was joined by many guests at Chuck’s induction into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, Thursday, November 7th at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Thirteen new members of the Class of 2019 with incredible sports careers are now in the Hall, five of them honored posthumously, from across western New York. The evening started with a showing of career clips, the presentation of a ring, followed by the inductee giving a speech. Chuck began his speech about the little kid with big dreams, and quoted author Grayson Mitchell,

Weekly Column By Donna Germain

Did you know…? Holidays are upon us and we are all searching for some new dishes to serve. How about some pasta: great idea, but which one? Pasta is dried or fresh. It is estimated that there are approximately 350 different types of pasta - and about four times that many names for them! This is due to the fact that some types may have different names in different languages, or even in the same language: in Italy, for example, names vary according to the region or area. In addition, pasta manufacturers and cooks may come up with new shapes or give new names to old shapes…the possibilities

Are you tired of shopping in a crowded big box store where everyone is literally rushed, doesn’t know their merchandise and certainly doesn’t know you? If so, then why not give shopping locally a try? In 2010, American Express created The Small Business Saturday campaign to give Americans a more pleasant alternative to the frenzy of the infamous “Black Friday” shopping day. Small businesses are the heart of the American economy, comprising 98 percent of all businesses in New York and employing more than half of New York’s private sector workforce. Yet, small businesses generate only a small percentage of the big dollars spent nationally over Thanksgiving, the biggest

Launching Of Capital Campaign Chautauqua Center Celebrates #GivingTuesday, Decemember 3rd

Dunkirk, NY/Jamestown, NY (Nov 19, 2019) – On Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019, The Chautauqua Center will join millions around the world participating in the global generosity movement called GivingTuesday. The Chautauqua Center will use GivingTuesday to launch their countywide capital campaign Build Health to raise funds for the completion of a state-of-the-art health center at 107 Institute Street in Jamestown. In addition, the campaign seeks match funds to build a new clinic in Dunkirk. The campaign is the culmination of efforts that began in 2010, when the Health Foundation of Western and Central New York determined that Chautauqua County was the highest need area in the nation without a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). An FQHC is a communitybased provider that receives federal funds to provide health care services in underserved areas. FQHCs must meet a stringent set of requirements, including providing care on a sliding fee scale and operating under a governing board that includes patients. Their goal is to improve community health by serving everyone regardless of insurance or ability to pay. The Chautauqua Center

was created in 2013 as the region’s only FQHC, and currently provides medical, dental, behavioral health and pharmacy services to over 10,000 patients countywide. In addition to offering a wide range of integrated health services, the Center adds to the sustainability of the local health system through referrals and partnership with other organizations. The Chautauqua Center has grown each year since inception and employs a team of over 140 staff and medical providers. As patient numbers continue to increase, so has the urgency for additional clinic space where all services can be delivered under one roof. The Center has raised over $4.5M from state and federal agencies and contributed $5.7M of private funds for the Jamestown building project. New Market Tax Credits were also secured, leaving a funding gap of approximately $4M to complete the 77,000 square foot facility. Those who are interested in joining The Chautauqua Center’s GivingTuesday initiative through an online contribution to their capital campaign can visit facebook. com/TheChautauquaCenter. Facebook is matching donations on December 3rd up to 7 million dollars nationwide on a first come

first serve basis starting at 8 am that day. Donations to the campaign can also be mailed to The Chautauqua Center, 319 Central Avenue, Suite B, Dunkirk, NY 14048, Attn. Amy Walters, CFO. The Chautauqua Center is a 501(c) (3) charitable entity. Gifts entitle donors to a charitable income tax deduction when submitting an itemized tax return. The Chautauqua Center will send donors a receipt that will serve as confirmation of the gift for tax purposes. A variety of recognition opportunities have been developed for campaign gifts of $5,000 and greater to provide visible recognition for donors. These include name recognition for a specific period of time within targeted high-traffic areas of each site based on the donation level. Foundation and corporate sponsors will also receive recognition in marketing and outreach materials for a time period based on level of contribution. Donors may also elect to contribute anonymously or make a gift in memory or honor of someone else. For more information, or for a PDF version of the campaign booklet, contact Sarah Gilbert, (716) 4844334 ext 1349, orsgilbert@ thechautauquacenter.org.

T-Shirt Order Deadline

Get Your Redesigned Audubon Community Nature Center Shirts by Nov. 30th

Audubon Community Nature Center Executive Director Leigh Rovegno models her exclusive Liberty tee she ordered last summer. The new tee’s updated design includes “Audubon Community Nature Center/Jamestown, New York” and is offered in a wider range of fabric and color options. Orders must be placed by November 30.

Jamestown, N.Y. – Last summer cut paper artist Wendy Bale created a design for shirts that were a fundraiser for Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC). The variety of colors and styles all featured Liberty, Audubon’s non-releasable Bald Eagle,

with the banner “For the Love of Liberty.” For holiday giving, Bale has updated her design with the addition of “Audubon Community Nature Center/ Jamestown, New York” and selected a wider range of fabrics and colors to choose from. ACNC Executive Director Leigh Rovegno is excited about this opportunity. “All of us at Audubon were thrilled both to have these great shirts and for the success of the fundraiser,” she said. “Knowing how much fun it is to give -- and receive! -- gifts with a local connection, we’re delighted they are available again.” For a limited time -- only through Saturday, November 30 -- anyone can order a Liberty tee directly at Bonfire. com/for-the-love-of-libertyACNC. When the sale closes, the shirts will all be printed, and orders will start shipping December 9. With seven sizes and more than a dozen colors to choose from, you are sure to find the right one for your gift giving -- or as a holiday treat for yourself. Orders can

you more energy, and help you handle higher amounts of stress during the holiday season. 2. Prioritize Your Sleep. Sleep is one of the first things to go when things get busy and stressful but it’s also one of the most important things to help you stay healthy while handing the stress of the holidays. Make sure to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, especially during the holiday season. 3. Meditate. While visiting with friends and family can be great, the busy schedule and constant socialization can add additional stress for most people. A great way to minimize this stress is to

prioritize some alone time every day. For example, you could start your day with a 10-minute meditation. 4. Don’t Over-Indulge. Diet is one of the hardest things to stick to during the holidays. If you’re going to indulge in the holiday treats, try not to overindulge to the point of being uncomfortable. Instead, enjoy small amounts of everything you would like. 5. Complete a 24-hour Reset Diet. If you would like to get back on track with your healthy eating as quickly as possible, you can complete a 24-hour reset diet. This will help you get good nutrients back into your body quickly and stop you from eating leftovers for the rest of the week. To do this, you will start your day with a smoothie or protein shake for breakfast, have a healthy salad for lunch, and either a salad or a vegetable soup for dinner. Ken’s place was perfect and very clean. It had everything we needed and in a perfect location. We were able to walk to many destinations and then relax on the front porch. Ken was also very responsive to whatever we needed and recommended local sights. Thank you. –Cathy, September 2019

received the “Employer of the Year Award” recently from Linda Spaulding, project director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Becky Blum, nutrition director from the Office for the Aging also presented the award. The recognition occurred during the 50 years of service to central and southern Chautauqua County celebration at the Doubletree Hilton, Jamestown. Mrs. Spaulding explained that the Jamestown Meals on Wheels Program, which is a host site for mature workers, is an ideal place where the participants love to be. They experience a strong commitment to serving the community. In addition, a genuine program advantage is that Mr. Yochim hires the trainees when an opening occurs.

Local employment and training opportunities are available for those who wish to enter the workforce. The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) places and pays individuals at various not for profit or government sites. This program which is administered locally by the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging, uses Department of Labor Funds through Senior Service America, Inc. SCSEP participants are able to improve their skills and have the advantage of current work. They also provide valuable community service to the site where they are working, such as the Jamestown Meals on Wheels Program. For more information about SCSEP you may call Linda Spaulding directly at the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging, 716 753-4856.

noodles such as Fettuccine or Linguine. However the standard noodle for macaroni and cheese is the elbow. If you are using it for soups, you want a small bite size noodle. The difference between Macaroni and Pasta is the ingredients used to make it. Years ago Macaroni was made from barley, now it is mainly semolina which is a coarse grain produced at the middle stage of wheat flour milling. Research shows that pasta was discovered back in the thirteenth century by Marco Polo, who introduced the pasta to Italy after one of his trips to China in 1271.

The ten most popular pastas are: Fusilli, Spaghetti, Fettuccine, Linguine, Penne, Cannelloni, Tagliatelle, Farfelle, Tortellini and Rigatoni. There are literally hundreds of dishes that can be made with pasta. Thoda there are also several gluten free pasta on the market. Pasta is a good source of carbohydrates that keep the body full of energy. The carbohydrates in pasta are also an excellent source of energy for the brain. Along with our Arts Education activities and field trips in collaboration with county schools throughout the school year, Winter Village represents a primary example of our efforts to turn the Institution’s gates into gateways-we want our neighbors to understand that this place belongs to them as much as it does the folks who come from outside the region to stay with us during the summer.” Winter Village opens at 5pm Friday, November 29, the day after Thanksgiving, when the lights and displays on Bestor

That’s because head coach Joe Paterno wanted to play him at defensive back, not at quarterback. Crist had played both positions in high school and wanted a shot at playing quarterback for the Nittany Lions. When Paterno refused, Crist took a deep breath and replied, “With all due respect coach, I’m a basketball player”, a sport which he really enjoyed. So he played basketball, not football, for the Blue and White of Penn State. After college, the New York Giants thought enough of Crist’s football skills to give him a free agent workout. “My dream to be a professional athlete still burned inside me and led me to that role. Christmas In EVL

Donated By Der Kobblers Automobile Association Over 11 Years

Annual Village Wide Celebration, November 29th - December 1st

Ellicottville, NY – One of the best ways to describe downtown Ellicottville in the Christmas season has been as something Norman Rockwell would have conjured up. The New York Times says, “it is like being transported to a scene from an old black and white Christmas movie.” As we start thinking of the Jolly Old Elf himself, why not come to see what the fuss is all about during the annual Christmas in Ellicottville weekend? The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce brings you a weekend full of holiday primer events to get even the most Grinchy heart growing. From noon on Friday, Nov. 29th to the last horse-drawn carriage ride on Sunday, the weekend is sure to have kids of all ages in the Holiday spirit. “Christmas is a time we all look forward to.” Barb Pump, Project Development Manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, said. “We get to spend time with our families and savor each memory that we create. Christmas in Ellicottville allows us to help create those memories that your family will be able to cherish for years to come, and that is why we love this event. All the smiles of the children when they see Santa, or the excitement when they get to

create an ornament to take home with them, is what the feeling of Christmas should be.” Start your weekend with a fire truck ride with Santa or Mrs. Claus. The Ellicottville Volunteer Fire Department acts as the chauffer for Mr. and Mrs. Claus as they take a spin around the village in Santa’s other big red sleigh and then head over to Tim & Bonnie’s Pizzeria for some bowling with Elves, which is new this year compliments of Tim and Bonnies. The Elves can hardly contain their excitement! The horse-drawn carriage rides will start at 1 p.m. Friday, Saturday and at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Katy’s Café and will tour the village then head across the street to the Wingate by Wyndham, our event sponsor, for a special time to meet with Santa and make sure you are on that ‘Nice’ list. While you wait for your turn, why not make a Christmas decoration to remember the joyous festivities. It’s all available, and all free, right there at the Wingate. At 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Santa, his carolers, and Rudolph will stroll from around Katy’s, up through the village, to the famous ski tree, where songs will be sung and real live reindeer will arrive at 6 p.m.,

hot chocolate will be available, compliments of Holiday Valley, and a countdown will take place for Santa to magically flip the switch and turn on the lights on the Village Christmas Tree lights and the rest of the village at 6:30. The streets of Ellicottville will look like a scene from It’s a Wonderful Life! Saturday and Sunday start at 10 a.m. with a pancake breakfast with Santa. Enjoy flapjacks at Finnerty’s on Saturday and then on Sunday at Villaggio complete with a Christmas movie on their huge screen. Monetary and non-perishable food donations will be accepted to assist the Ellicottville Food Pantry to help the less fortunate. Please be generous! The rest of the weekend will be filled with carriage rides, fire truck rides, cookie decorating, and even more time with Santa for the little ones. Santa’s reindeer will be at the largest and most famous ski tree in America on Friday, Saturday, and, Sunday, and of course, the great retail merchants and restaurants of Ellicottville will be open all weekend as well. What a great way to get out as a family and get a jump on that Holiday shopping! Come out to the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce Christmas in Ellicottville Nov. 29 – Dec 1. “We are very proud to be able to present this entire event for FREE through the generosity of our presenting sponsor, Wingate by Windham, and many others”, commented Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Ellicottville Chamber About Ellicottville See “EVL” Right

the sponsors and community members who supported the event. If it wasn’t for everyone involved, they wouldn’t be able to provide support to so many in the community. The rain hindered a lot of people coming out this year, so we are hoping for better weather next year!” Over the last eleven years, Der Kobblers has donated over $16,750 to UPMC Chautauqua. These gifts have been used to furnish the diabetes teaching classrooms, including a laptop, screen, and food models, to better educate patients how to manage diabetes and provide tools they can utilize to change their lifestyles. “The faithful commitment and generosity of Der Kobblers has allowed us to provide additional valuable resources which empower patients to take charge of their health,” says Kerry Mihalko, R.D., and UPMC Chautauqua Certified Diabetes Educator.

“I was able to attend the event this year, and it was an amazing turn out with some of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen. If you have an opportunity to attend, you won’t be disappointed. If you can’t attend, and would like to make a donation to Der Kobblers, they give generously to our program every year.” Der Kobblers, founded in 1958 by car enthusiasts, the club continues their enthusiastic approach to giving. “Our goal is to change the way view “hot rodders” of the 50s and 60s,” says Sam. “We endeavor to help our community the best way we can by donating to UPMC Chautauqua, in addition to other great causes.” To donate to Der Kobblers causes, attend the local Labor Day Cruise-In Car Show at Midway Park. No admission to the show is required. Donations are gratefully accepted from all those who participate in the car show. For more information or to join Der Kobblers, call (716) 450-0663.
