One goodbye was not enough. Just when we thought we’d seen family and friends for the last time they showed up again. One more hug. “How many times did we say goodbye? That’s German hospitality,” said Hildegard Ratliff, my travel companion. It was my first trip to Germany. My colleague in tourism and coauthor of Red & Blue: A Memoir of Two Alaskan Tour Guides, Hildegard took me to the city of her early years. It was not a typical sightseeing tour, but rather travel into the heart of German people through the half-dozen families who welcomed us into their homes with meals and family celebrations. We stayed with Hildegard’s brother Manfred and sister-in-law Helga in Cologne, or more properly Köln as it is called by the people of Germany. Their apartment is See “GERMANY” Page 7

FREDONIA – As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration on Sun., Nov. 10, the 1891 Fredonia Opera House announced a change to its official name and logo. It also recognized a major donation, which funded a rebuild of its 1918 Steinway grand piano. The 25th Anniversary variety show, called Fredonia On Stage! – 25 Years Later, followed a similar format to the grand re-opening performance held almost 25 years ago to the day (Nov. 12, 1994); and while it gave a nod to the Opera House’s past 25 years, it emphasized the theatre’s current programming through the specific selection of performers and performances. The current variety of programming is what prompted the name and logo revision, says Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis. “All of the performances that you have seen here today shows that the Opera House is more than just a theatre. It is more than just a movie See “FREDONIA” Page 7

Between attending to delighted clients at her body sculpting offices in Lakewood, Ellicottville, Olean and Warren, Pa, it’s amazing that Anna Raia-DiMarco, owner and body sculpting specialist at her offices throughout the Southern Tier has a moment of spare time to call her own. Add the many responsibilities of running these businesses to the travel required by that formidable geographic range and one has to wonder how this determined dynamo gets anything done! And, yet, she does. In fact, besides juggling her many professional responsibilities, she has finally inserted enough time into her busy schedule to pursue a calling that was fashioned in her childhood and has hung in the shadows throughout her very busy adult life. At age four, Anna RaiaDiMarco began riding Arabian horses, a beloved hobby that endured through adulthood. As See “DiMarco” Page 7

Memorial light towers contain the names of hospice patients who passed in the last year, as well as names of loved ones remembered by community members Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care will hold its annual Light a Life Service of Remembrance and Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, November 30 at 6pm. The event is free and open to the public. Area residents are encouraged to participate in the service. The evening will begin with the Remembrance program at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, located

across from the CHPC offices on Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood. Following the service, participants will proceed to the CHPC offices to view the lighting of the Memorial Trees and Towers. Music and refreshments will also be a part of the event. Memorial trees will be decorated with reflective stars in remembrance of hospice patients, as well as for community members whose family would like to participate. Stars in memory of a loved one may be reserved on the CHPC website and the memorialized individuals will be listed in the event program and on the memorial light towers. Shauna Anderson, Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care President and CEO, encourages all community members to participate in the service, regardless of whether or not CHPC was involved in their loved one’s care. “The holiday season may be a difficult time for many of our friends and neighbors,” says Anderson. “We hope this service and memorial display, which will remain lit throughout the holiday season, will help them in their journey.”

In addition to the Light a Life Ceremony, CHPC offers keepsake memorial ornaments as a tasteful gift for friends or family who have lost a loved one. These hand-crafted ornaments may be purchased for $25 and $50 at CHPC offices or online at www.chpc. care and will be available up until Christmas. The remembrance service and tree lighting event is coordinated again this year by Jamie Probst, CHPC Director of Bereavement Services. CHPC’s bereavement support programs are open to all community members. More information is available regarding Light a Life on the CHPC website www.CHPC. care. Inquiries can be made by phone at 716-338-0033, x212. The mission of Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care is to provide end of life education and care in Chautauqua County. CHPC provides hospice care for patients and families facing life-limiting terminal illness, palliative care for those with serious chronic illness, and bereavement support to individuals, families and organizations who have suffered the loss of a loved one. For more information, visit CHPC.org or call (716) 338-0033.

of 2014, there are 92 soups in the Condensed Soup line, but there are multiple versions of some of them. For example, with Cream of Mushroom, there is the main Cream of Mushroom soup, plus Cream of Chicken & Mushroom, Healthy Request Cream of Mushroom, Low Sodium Cream of Mushroom, 25 Percent Less Sodium Cream of Mushroom and 98 Percent Fat Free Cream of Mushroom. Additionally, there are 77 different Chunky Soups, 24 Home Style, 13 Slow Kettle Style Soups, four Gourmet Bisque’s, 35 Healthy Request Soups (of which 12 are Condensed, 13 are Chunky, 6 are Home style). There are 44 Microwavable, six Campbell’s Go Soups, four Soups for Easy Cooking and six Reserve Soups. Wow, that is a lot of soup. The top 5 favorite soups are (not necessarily Campbell’s brand) 1. Chicken Noodle, 2. Tomato, 3. Clam Chowder, 4. Potato, and 5. Minestrone. Americans eat more than 10 billion bowls of soup a year. Women are more likely to eat soup over men for lunch. 85% of Americans prefer a broth-based soup over a bisque or cream based.

Studies show Chicken Noodle Soup to be more than just a placebo. It is proven to aid in the airflow and mucus in the nose better than drinking water. It also shows that it supports the movement of neutrophils, the most common white blood cell that fights infection. North America is the largest producer of soups. The soup industry is valued at about $7.7 billion dollars. 95% of Americans say they like to eat soup. Health Studies show that soup has many health benefits including weight loss. Health experts state that eating homemade broth-based soups with vegetables are the most beneficial. Andy Warhol can be credited for establishing the classic Campbell’s soup can as an iconic pop art emblem. That familiar red and whitelabeled can has been on grocery store shelves since the turn of the 20th century, making it one of America’s most widely-recognized food products, ranking right up there with Oreos and Coca-Cola. Not much has changed in the last 120 years, which is to say, if it is not broke…don’t fix it. Now you know….

The first membership campaign was more than successful, beating their goal of 1000 season ticket holders with 11,000. The Little Theatre itself had it’s grand opening in 1969. And in 1989, Lucille Ball allowed the name to be changed to include her own, though she unfortunately passed away before the actual dedication ceremony. Her daughter Lucie Arnaz attended in her place. Currently the Lucille Ball Little Theatre is a Community Theatre with 5 major productions each year, plus the annual Junior Guilders Show. The Theatre Season is January to December. It has a 405seat auditorium and a 30 X 60 foot lobby, a full stage with a fly capability plus office; check room and toilet facilities. The theatre is handicap accessible. The plays or musicals are presented for two weekends. All productions are open to the public and special group prices are available. The last main performance of the 2019 season is “Harvey”, a humorous tale where Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. Trouble is, Harvey is an imaginary sixand-a-half-foot-tall rabbit. Much hilarity follows. Dates and hours for this performance are: November

Matei Denes commented, “The community is what pushed us to do the project in the first place. It was clear that the loss of the Adams created a void in Dunkirk and that reopening it would be a salve to the cultural offerings up here.” Community members help plan and host events. Not only do they host art exhibitions they also have performances, music, movies, talks, sports, classes, workshops and community events. here, strangers strike up conversations in public places. Even at separate tables in a restaurant, people start talking to each other. From the first I was drawn to German homes, with their clean horizontal lines and light interiors. Wine glasses are kept prominently in living rooms, a tradition I heartily endorse. But while Americans lean toward open concept houses, Germans like doors and keep them closed. In our host home there were doors leading into the kitchen, basement, bedroom, living room and bathroom. When we first arrived I tried to remember which led to the bedroom I was occupying, which opened the bathroom and more importantly, was it occupied? At first I thought it was peculiar to their home, but I found doors closed in every home we visited. Knowing it was my first trip; friends and family ensured I had a taste of the antiquities so foreign to us in the New World. At Kommern Open Air Museum we walked amid and inside tiny farm houses portraying rural life from centuries past. One windmill dated back to the 1400s. The old is new again. Construction of Schloss Burg Castle began around 1130 AD and would be residence for Counts of Berg for hundreds of years. Did the deep wear on narrow stone stairways go back that far? I liked to think I was stepping on centuries of history. Medieval life was clearly no easy climb for either

the counts or the workers who supported them. We joined a retiree bus tour to Kloster Maria Laach with former co-workers and friends of Manfred. Upon reaching the parking lot everyone retrieved their own liqueur glass and spent the next half hour celebrating the 70th anniversary of members of their circle. Spirits are an integral part of all gatherings, I learned. The abbey was built in the 11th-12th centuries, with a history as complicated as its storied Romanesque towers. It would take days to do it justice. In Köln must-sees are the Chocolate MuseumGermans are great producers and consumers of chocolate, and Cologne Cathedral, a city landmark with twin spires piercing the sky. The foundation stone was laid August 15, 1248. Fourteen hits by aerial bombs inflicted heavy damage during World War II. Though restoration seems remarkable, it will continue for decades. The spires were reportedly spared in part because Allied bombers used them as navigational aids. I brought home two postcards, both with black and white photos. The first, dated 1945, depicts the twin spires in the background, and rubble all around. The second, dated 1946, shows people in costume celebrating Carnival in the snow, twin spires visible behind them. They speak to me of what one person can unleash, and of the power of the human spirit to prevail.

English pleasure horse, and, as Anna says, “a Rockstar!” Then came the lease of a mare named Elegant Revival, with which they won the first class they showed in and ended up top 10 in the country at The Nationals in 2018. Anna regarded this as a blessed way to get back into competition and requested to buy that horse. But it was not to be. Pepper then found another beautiful half Arabian mare called Larda Mercy - a multinational champion in ladies side saddle among other wins. While showing at the Nationals in 2018, Pepper spotted and fell in love with a three-year-old purebred chestnut Arabian mare named Kiss Me Cayte. As Anna tells it, “that would change both of our lives.” Cayte had just won reserve national champion and Pepper was certain the she was the perfect horse for Anna. According to Pepper, “Cayte is so sweet. Very laid back. That’s one main reason I bought her - because I knew she would be the perfect amateur horse. Cayte was shown in JR horse, as she’s a baby. We bought her to become Anna’s horse. I love Anna’s passion for animals and this Arabian horse. I’m so very thankful the universe

made us bump into each other again.” Cayte subsequently became Anna’s and one year later, at the age of only four, she was United States National Champion Arabian Country English Pleasure Junior Horse. Says Anna, “This is a huge honor in a very difficult class and she was one of, if not the youngest horse in the class. I’m super excited to show her next year at the nationals in the maturity class which is for younger horses and their amateur riders.” After Cayte came Severance Pay, a western horse. As Anna says, “who doesn’t want to be a rhinestone cowgirl?” At present her stable includes a total of seven horses, all with national wins, including Top Tens in the country. Says Anna, “… I’m so excited that I am able to do what I love and share my passion with my great friend, coach and mentor Pepper Proffit. We work very well together; we have been blessed to put together an incredible string of winning show horses. She has helped make my dreams come true and many more are in the making.” Meanwhile, Anna will continue to sculpt her clients and, as often as she can, head off to the stable to love on and ride her horses.

Rolling Hills Radio Episode 92 Garnet Rogers W/ The Ramsey Sisters at Shawbucks, November 25th

Wits N’ Giggles Comedy At Northwest Arena, November 23rd, 7:30pm

Garnet Rogers along with Mary and Susan Ramsey at Shawbucks.

Jamestown, NY (November 25, 2019) – Rolling Hills Radio will present the Ramsey Sisters and folk singersongwriter, Garnet Rogers for Episode 92. Sisters Mary and Susan Ramsey are both classically trained in viola and violin. Their appearance on Rolling Hills Radio is a rare opportunity to see them playing and singing together. Mary has worked with the Erie Philharmonic, the Fresno Philharmonic, the Santa Cruz Symphony and the Monterey Symphony in California. She is the front person, singer, viola player for 10,000 Maniacs. With 10,000 Maniacs founding member, John Lombardo, she is in the folk-rock duo, John and Mary. Susan studied violin and viola at Smith College. She is the Director of the Foxcroft Academy String Program as well as playing viola and violin with David Mallett. Garnet Rogers began his professional music career as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan, a noted and well-respected folk musician of his time and beyond. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. After Stan’s tragic 1983 death in a tragic airplane accident, Garnet embarked on

his own solo career. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). Host Ken Hardley says of the Ramsey Sisters, “I’ve been in the presence of these two making music together and I can tell you that they personify the old saw that there is a musical simpatico between siblings that is natural and effortlessly beautiful. This indescribable quality can be quite be quite beautiful on recordings, but to be see and hear them together live is an unmatched moving experience.” He goes on, “Rolling Hills is nothing if not a celebration of genuine, heartfelt music presented by people with rare talent. Garnet Rogers is just

that. I promise you will leave this show having been moved deeply.” All live RHR regular season shows take place at Shawbucks, across from Jamestown’s Ice Arena. Doors open — to all those holding or purchasing tickets — at 5:30pm for the “Rolling Happy Hour.” Food and drink are available until 6:15 at which time audience members take their seats and the house lights dim. Audio and video recording begins promptly at 6:30. The bar reopens for 10 minutes at intermission and then again after the show when the audience and performers are invited to a “Meet and Greet.” There are three options for purchasing tickets; Until the show is sold out, tickets are available at the door the night of each show. If you choose, you can call the Rolling Ticket Hotline at (716) 2940416. Tickets are also available online at rollinghillsradio. org/tickets. Tickets for the September show are $15.00.
