Announcers take over at 6:20pm as the parade begins to move from the Third Street Bridge. A Phoenix Rising from the Ashes By Ann-Marie Gariepy

The Farmer’s Almanac predicts that this coming winter in our area “will be warmer than normal, with above-normal precipitation. The coldest periods will be in early December and early to mid-January, from late January into early February, and in late February. Snowfall will be above normal in Ohio and below normal in most other areas. The snowiest periods will be in early to mid-January, from late January into early February and late February into early March, and in late March.” Got all that?

There are those among us that simply live for ski season. Much as someone who enjoys any other seasonal sporting season. Winter sports lovers are a special breed. Wishing for cold and praying for snow. Snow. And more snow. Lodges everywhere have been long preparing for the 2019-2020-ski season. Maybe none more so than the Cockaigne team. After a fire in 2011 destroyed the lodge, Cockaigne Resort is a literal phoenix rising from the ashes. Located in the serene beauty of Cherry Creek, NY the 425-acre property has been brought back to life. Not only to its former glory- but beyond. And this season, they’re ready. In its most literal sense the definition of Cockaigne

Community Christmas Project Creche Members Gathered At Old Navy To Shop For Local Youth

Left Judy Bentley Co-Chair, Susie Stuart, Creche Member

On Sunday November 10th, twenty-nine Creche members gathered at Old Navy to shop for their annual Community Service Christmas Project.

Creche members shopped for sixty- three children, from eighteen different area schools. The youth group members from Zion Covenant

Church assisted this year by helping Creche members chose age appropriate gifts for the children. Local school guidance counselors and nurses selected recipients. As part of its mission to give back to the community, the Old Navy Store at the Chautauqua Mall offered a discount, extended its hours and provided assistance for the Creche shoppers to fulfill their lists of needed clothing items. In addition to clothing for each child, holiday giftbags for the families containing a WalMart gift card, a family game, toothbrushes donated by Dr. Andrew Kohl, other personal care items and a letter from Creche. The Creche Inc, founded in 1900, is a local not-for-profit women’s organization comprised of 100 volunteers whose mission is to help needy children and their families in the greater Jamestown area. Teddy Bear Toss For Tots

At The Northwest Arena, During The November 30th Rebel’s Hockey Game

Representatives from the Jamestown Rebels and The Resource Center pose with some stuffed bears. Pictured from left are Team Captain Eric Olson; Tommy Gerace, the Rebels’ director of community relations; and Terri Johnson, TRC’s director of employment and communitybased services and one of the lead organizers of the local Toys for Tots drive.

Fans of the Jamestown Rebels get excited whenever the hockey team scores. The first goal the Rebels score during their November 30 game will be more exciting than usual. That’s because Jamestown’s first goal will be a signal for fans to throw teddy bears onto the ice in a promotion to benefit The Resource Center’s Marine Toys for Tots drive. The event is called the Teddy Bear Toss, and this marks the fourth straight year it has taken place. Fans are encouraged to bring new, stuffed bears to throw onto the ice after the Rebels score their first goal. (If Jamestown doesn’t score during the first two periods, the Teddy Bear Toss will take place during the second intermission.) The bears will be collected and then given to Toys for Tots. TRC officials are grateful the Rebels and Northwest Arena were willing to conduct a Teddy Bear Toss again this year. “We’re so glad the Rebels and the arena wanted to do the

Teddy Bear Toss again,” said Steve Waterson, community relations’ director. “Our community is very supportive of the Toys for Tots drive, and the Teddy Bear Toss is a great way to collect some toys while giving fans the opportunity to have fun by throwing teddy bears onto the ice. We appreciate the players and coaches being willing to delay play for the Teddy Bear Toss and then help collect the toys.” Rebels’ officials also are looking forward to the Teddy Bear Toss. “The Rebels are pleased to once again team up with The Resource Center for our annual Teddy Bear Toss night. Having this promotion is a wonderful way to bring the community together to support the Toys for Tots drive and the children of Chautauqua County. We couldn’t be more excited for this night.” said Tommy Gerace, director of community relations. The Rebels’ opponent will be the Johnstown Tomahawks. Game time is 7:05. Gerace

noted that fans will receive a discount on their ticket purchase if they bring a stuffed animal to throw onto the ice. He said more information can be found at www. rebelshockey.us. While fans of the hometown team likely want Jamestown to score lots of goals, Waterson said he hopes the Rebels don’t score as quickly as they did at last year’s Teddy Bear Toss game. In that contest, the home team scored about 90 seconds into the game, and because the first goal occurred so soon some late-arriving fans missed the Teddy Bear Toss. Waterson noted the popularity of the Teddy Bear Toss, saying that more than 1,100 people attended last year’s game, including hundreds of TRC employees and their families. About 400 stuffed toys were collected during last year’s game, and he thinks this year’s Teddy Bear Toss will be even more successful. Waterson said each toy donated is needed, and this was especially true last year when TRC experienced a greater than 20 percent increase in the number of children and families seeking assistance through the Toys for Tots program. This marks the 19th straight year The Resource Center has coordinated the Marine Toys for Tots drive in Chautauqua County. Last year a record 3,213 local children received toys. People interested in applying for toys should do so online at www.jamestownny.toysfortots.org. The application deadline is December 9. For more information about the toy drive, phone Terri Johnson at 661-1433.

We also carry in our vehicles a hatchet, rudimentary fishing supplies, booster cables, flares, tire pump and kitty litter in case we get stuck. Remember, when you start your car, give a rap on the fender and hood to alert any sleeping animal which may have crawled up into a warm space for shelter. Speaking of animals, my Jack Russel Terrier does not like the snow. Her short legs don’t allow for much clearance when she is sent outdoors to do her business. If the snow is over 3 inches, she stands outside the back door, ears plastered down with a forlorn, pathetic look on her face, as if to say, “you want me to do what? Out here in the cold and snow?” But, all pets are

not equal. I realize that when I walk through town and see large, furry, weather hardy pooches tugging their owners into a sprint as they are out for their walk. Although there is a disparity in our pooches’ temperaments and tolerances for the cold, it’s good to remember that with the winter season approaching there are a few common sense rules to follow regarding our pets. Pets burn more energy in winter so you may find you need to feed them a bit more. Pet coats and boots are both cute and practical. Use them. If your pets paws have been exposed to salt, wipe them with a damp cloth. It can burn their paws and if they lick it, the salt can make them sick. If they are sensitive to cold, take them outdoors only long enough for them to do their business. Do not leave dogs unattended in cold vehicles. They can get hypothermia, even in a car. Currently in NYS, under the new Libre’s law a dog cannot be left leashed outdoors for longer than 30 minutes in cold weather temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If you notice animals in distress, in frigid weather beyond this time frame, DO NOT hesitate to call the authorities, or call 911. Finally, be prepared to check on family and neighbors who are especially at risk from cold weather hazards.

Cont. From Cover friends and family. People do still use the day to reflect on what they have to be thankful for. While Thanksgiving tradition was to have been started in the United States, several other nations also celebrate their own versions of Thanksgiving such as Australia, Canada, Grenada, Liberia, Netherlands and Saint Lucia. In Canada, Thanksgiving is held in October and is used

After the parade, Santa heads to the Jamestown YMCA for Santa’s Family Workshop, already underway since 7pm. Activities include craft and ornament making, face painting, holiday tattoos, Christmas sing-a-long, holiday games. Cost is $1 per person, children under two free, with pizza and snacks available for purchase. The holiday celebration also sheds a spotlight on downtown Jamestown. A holiday decorating contest November 29-January 1 encourages downtown businesses to do their part in making the area look extra festive. A panel will pick winners for media buys and there will be a People’s Choice award. Photos of entrants will be posted at jamestownupclose.com/ holiday-decorating-contest. A Shop Small Win Big contest further encourages downtown shopping and dining. Anyone spending $10 or more at participating downtown locations (70 are confirmed so far) will receive an entry into a prize drawing for one of 10 gift cards to a downtown restaurant/retailer to show thankfulness at the end of the harvest season. Grenada’s Thanksgiving holiday isn’t related at all to thankfulness or harvests. Instead, it is held on October 25, the same day that a U.S. led invasion occurred in 1983. In Liberia, Thanksgiving started in the 1800’s as a celebration of the colonization of freed African Americans. Here in the United States 77% of whole turkeys sold are sold in November. Prices can range from a low $0.59 per pound to $7 per pound or higher for heritage turkeys. Americans will spend approximately $968.8 million dollars on Thanksgiving. That number is down from 2018 at over $1 billion. 290 million people are projected to eat Turkey in the US on Thanksgiving. Turkey wasn’t on the menu at the first

Christmas In Ellicottville

Christmas In The Village

This Weekend Celebrate the Reason for the Season: Nov. 29-Dec. 1, 2019

Ellicottville, NY – One of the best ways to describe downtown Ellicottville in the Christmas season has been as something Norman Rockwell would have conjured up. The New York Times says, “it is like being transported to a scene from an old black and white Christmas movie.” As we start thinking of the Jolly Old Elf himself, why not come to see what the fuss is all about during the annual Christmas in Ellicottville weekend? The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce brings you a weekend full of holiday primer events to get even the most Grinchy heart growing. From noon on Friday, Nov. 29th to the last horse-drawn carriage ride on Sunday, the weekend is sure to have kids of all ages in the Holiday spirit. “Christmas is a time we all look forward to.” Barb Pump, Project Development Manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, said. “We get to spend time with our families and savor each memory that we create. Christmas in Ellicottville allows us to help create those memories that your family will be able to cherish for years to come, and that is why we love this event. All the smiles

of the children when they see Santa, or the excitement when they get to create an ornament to take home with them, is what the feeling of Christmas should be.” Start your weekend with a fire truck ride with Santa or Mrs. Claus. The Ellicottville Volunteer Fire Department acts as the chauffer for Mr. and Mrs. Claus as they take a spin around the village in Santa’s other big red sleigh and then head over to Tim & Bonnie’s Pizzeria for some bowling with Elves, which is new this year compliments of Tim and Bonnies. The Elves can hardly contain their excitement! The horse-drawn carriage rides will start at 1pm Friday, Saturday and at 12pm on Sunday at Katy’s Café and will tour the village then head across the street to the Wingate by Wyndham, our event sponsor, for a special time to meet with Santa and make sure you are on that ‘Nice’ list. While you wait for your turn, why not make a Christmas decoration to remember the joyous festivities. It’s all available, and all free, right there at the Wingate. At 5:30pm on Friday, Santa, his carolers, and Rudolph will stroll from around Katy’s, up through the village, to
