A Visit with Mountain Shop Experts Carl & Chasidi

Opening day of the 2019-2010 season has already come and gone. With welcoming blue bird skies and great snow, there were a lot of smiling faces! The holiday season is also quickly approaching along with the winter season, what better way than to visit the Holiday Valley Mountain Shops to buy that special something for everyone on your list. I took some time to speak with Carl Kirchner, Mountain Shop Manager, and Chasidi Hill, Assistant Mountain Shop Manager, to learn what preparation goes into prepping for the upcoming season.

Solar Amendments

Town Planning Integrates Changes for Solar

Solar Public Hearing At the Town Board public hearing last Wednesday, the Board heard comments both for and against large-scale solar projects in the Town. The meeting started with Town Planner Gary Palumbo presenting a summary of the new zoning regulations for solar power plants. Mr. Palumbo stated the zoning codes are “silent” on solar projects, and if such projects are not mentioned in the codes, they are automatically not allowed. The proposed amendments recognize three categories of solar facilities: Tier I: small scale roof-mounted arrays for both residential and commercial sites. Tier 2: Groundmounted systems for on-site consumption and less than two kilowatts, Tier 3: commercial installations primarily to sell power for off-site consumption and limited to 25 megawatts. Tier 3 plants would be allowed in AG (agricultural) and LD (low density) areas that make up about 85% of the town area. Certain areas such as woodlands, wetlands, and significant hilltops would be protected from installations. Tier 3 projects would need a special use permit and the proposed codes contain

Publisher’s Word “Giving Thanks....”

The one day Americans set aside to celebrate the things we are most thankful for is finally here. Thanksgiving is a holiday of home, family, and peace. This important event has a different meaning to each of us. It serves as a reminder that regardless of the type of year we’ve had, there’s always a need to acknowledge the fact that true blessings grace all of our lives. We all share in the fact each one of us owes a debt of gratitude for being alive, for waking in the morning, getting out of bed and walking out the door. This is something we need to remind ourselves each and every day.

with his spirit and generosity. Ellicottville Brewing Company is hosting the event again this year on Friday, December 6th beginning at 6pm. Although it can never be the same with his passing, Bob’s dedication to this event inspires us to continue with his magic. It was McCarthy who said, “I love doing Irish Christmas which is a night of Irish magic. I don’t know how the magic gets there, but it just does. That’s the beauty of it.” For 14 years, the Irish Christmas fundraiser has become an event to remember, and one that locals and weekenders alike won’t miss. McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside of EBC starting around 8am, where new toys and unwrapped gifts are collected for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriff’s Santa Program, which provides gifts to make Christmas a little special for less fortunate families in our community. Again this year, a number of restaurants will serve a special Irish dish at a reasonable price or you can order from the great

provisions for landscaping to screen the panels, requiring underground cables, and rules for decommissioning the plants. Local contractor Pat Burke, who has a housing development off Which Hollow Road, was the first to speak. He said the codes should consider the impact on neighbors. He stated flatly solar panels are “ugly” and no one wants to live next to one. He said living next to one could lower property values. Mr. Burke added the “solar guys” are only renting the property for the installation, and they “have no skin in the game.” In response, Mr. Palumbo said the Board could consider increased setbacks for projects in AG districts (the current AG setback is 60 feet) and increase open space requirements. Since Tier 3 solar projects need a special use permit that requires a public hearing, the neighbors would have input about a proposed installation. The Planner added there are currently no solar project

Holiday Valley Updates

A Visit with Holiday Valley Mountain Shop Experts Carl & Chasidi EBC menu. We understand that there will be a “Secret Weapon” from the Brewery this year and we can’t wait. The highlight of course is the Pie Auction and the intention is to continue the way Bob wanted it. Again Ed Frederickson has volunteered to create pie boxes and special furniture like Bob did and, believe it or not, a number of Bob’s creations donated to be auctioned off as well. We have been overwhelmed this year with donations for the auction so there are some great surprises in store for all tastes. If you would like to donate to the auction with a special dessert, please contact Katy Arena at 716-801-2740 applications in the works at this time, and the Code Enforcement Officer would probably not accept any applications until the codes are set in place. Town Supervisor Matt McAndrew said the Town is going through the process of establishing codes and added the Town is “trying to do it the right way.” He assured the assembly, “We have good people on good boards.” At this point, Joel Santensvan from a solar company addressed the gathering. He said his company wants to work closely with their “partners” to create optimal land use with their projects. He asked the group to imagine a world with large-scale solar installations on the rooftops of commercial buildings. He said his company would encourage creating bonds or letters of credit to facilitate the decommissioning of plants after their typical life span of 25 years. Board member John Zerfas said, “solar is the future” but said he wouldn’t want to see a project that would negatively affect people. Mr. Palumbo pointed out it is better the Town comes a little late to the game; that way, “we can see the mistakes others have made.” There were no more comments, and Board submitted a draft of the proposed amendment to the zoning law to include solar instillations (See Solar Debate Heats Up). At the public hearing several changes to the new provisions were suggested, and Monday the Planning Board reviewed them. One change included battery storage systems which are being developed. Planning created a requirement that battery storage systems can only be an accessory use as part of an approved Solar Energy System. Another revision covered increasing the size or power of a previously approved Tier 3 Solar Energy Plant. Any change in power or size in

Cockaigne 2020

By Ann-Marie Gariepy There are those among us that simply live for ski season. Much as someone who enjoys any other seasonal sporting season. Winter sports lovers are a special breed. Wishing for cold and praying for snow. Snow. And more snow. Lodges everywhere have been long preparing for the 20192020-ski season. Maybe none more so than the Cockaigne team. After a fire in 2011 destroyed the lodge, Cockaigne Resort is a literal phoenix rising from the ashes. Located in the serene beauty of Cherry Creek, NY the 425-acre property has been brought back to life. Not only to its former glorybut beyond. And this season, they’re ready. In its most literal sense the definition of Cockaigne is “an imaginary land of great luxury and ease”. And that is exactly what is provided to all who venture to Cockaigne Resort.

trail to suit every level of skier, snowboarder or snowmobiler. The Marzipan slope shares space with a NASTAR race eligible run. The National Standard Race is the world’s largest known recreational ski and snowboard race program allowing racers to compare themselves with one another regardless of where and when they race. Eligibility for resort participation is determined by the organization. For more information on becoming part of the NASTAR program visit www.nastar.com. Ski trails are open all week with the exception of Tuesdays, Adult and Junior priced all access tickets are available for weekday and weekday nights (4pm-close), Saturdays and Holidays both all access and night, as well as Sunday all access. Adult and Junior season passes are available for purchase and a great value for avid skiers of any age. Veteran and Seniors receive a 10% off season passes and skiers under 5 are FREE. Get your engine started and round up a group of friends to make tracks on the Snowmobile Adventure Park. Several designated and well-marked trails make your snowmobile adventures safe and fun. For those of us who don’t ski, board, tube, ride or frankly, “do” winter outdoors there is a place for you too. Enjoy food, drinks and fun at one of three destinations for eats and potables. The Base Pub offers monthly and weekly food and drink specials as well as a fun menu of assorted finger foods, mac & cheese, soups, salads, pizza and a burger menu that

After adding 5,600 feet of snow making systems and refreshing the former system, Cockaigne was making snow on November 12. Forcing water and pressurized air through a snow gun, aka snow cannon, makes snow. Snow making is used to supplement natural snow and requires low temperatures. Now they just need a little help from Mother Nature. Three refurbished lifts and a J-bar are up and running. State of the art lighting is standing by to provide the best night skiing, tubing and snowmobiling you could wish for on those cold, dark winter evenings. The Cockaigne Resort hill is 430 feet at its highest elevation and boasts 80 skiable acres the longest slope being 3,600 feet. The Cockaigne Resort boasts a veritable “Land of Sweets” on the slopes, From Peppermint Twist and Sugar Plum Run to Gingerbread and Macaroon there is a slope or a See COCKAIGNE page 12

Winter Safety Tips

It’s THAT Season: Cold, Wet, Snowy - Ideas to Make it More Safe By Carol Fisher The Farmer’s Almanac predicts that this coming winter in our area “will be warmer than normal, with above-normal precipitation. The coldest periods will be in early December and early to mid-January, from late January into early February, and in late February. Snowfall will be above normal in Ohio and below normal in most other areas. The snowiest periods will be in early to mid-January, from late January into early February and late February into early March, and in late March.” Got all that? By now, with the warm days we’ve recently had, you have hopefully done the necessary winterizing of your home with weather stripping, insulation, cleaning your gutters, etc. If you haven’t, this may be your last good weather week to do those things (and plant those spring bulbs). While you are at it, have your heating system checked, fireplace flues and chimneys inspected and check or install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If possible, acquire a generator and know how and where to safely use it (outdoors - no less than 20 feet from house). If power goes out and you must use grills and/or camp stoves, keep them out of the house, basement or garage. Get your car ready: Are your tires ready to handle the snow and ice? Check your lights, battery and antifreeze levels. For pet safety, use nontoxic antifreeze containing “denatonium benzoate.” Carry a snow shovel, scraper and small broom. Keep your gas tank filled at all times. Carry spare warm clothing,

including gloves and hats and tall boot or Wellies in a waterproof bag. We carry large emergency backpacks in our cars which include portable chargers, extra batteries for the cell phone, flares, emergency mylar thermal blankets (Walmart and Target have these), food (jerky, energy/protein bars, Fritos corn chips which can serve as both food and fire starters), water, a lifehammer (emergency escape tool), maps, compass, flashlights and extra batteries, crank/ battery-powered radio, weatherproof matches in a sealed container, empty ziplock bags, emergency candles, magnesium fire starter, signaling mirror, hand and body warmers, medications and a first aid kit to which we have added tweezers, scalpel and Kwik Clot (WalMart or styptic powder from Petco). We also carry in our vehicles a hatchet, rudimentary fishing supplies, booster cables, flares, tire pump and kitty litter in case we get stuck. Remember, when you start your car, give a rap on the fender and hood to alert any sleeping animal which may have crawled up into a warm space for shelter. Speaking of animals, my

Jack Russel Terrier does not like the snow. Her short legs don’t allow for much clearance when she is sent outdoors to do her business. If the snow is over 3 inches, she stands outside the back door, ears plastered down with a forlorn, pathetic look on her face, as if to say, “you want me to do what? Out here in the cold and snow?” But, all pets are not equal. I realize that when I walk through town and see large, furry, weather hardy pooches tugging their owners into a sprint as they are out for their walk. Although there is a disparity in our pooches’ temperaments and tolerances for the cold, it’s good to remember that with the winter season approaching there are a few common sense rules to follow regarding our pets. Pets burn more energy in winter so you may find you need to feed them a bit more. Pet coats and boots are both cute and practical. Use them. If your pets paws have been exposed to salt, wipe them with a damp cloth. It can burn their paws and if they lick it, the salt can make them sick. If they are sensitive to cold, take them outdoors only long enough for them to do their business. Do not leave dogs See SAFETY page 10

Season

Cont. From Cover upcoming seasons and some of the changes to look for while you’re out there! Villager (V): What does a day in your shoes look like while preparing? Jane Eshbaugh (JE): In the Marketing Dept. every day is a surprise; every day is different. Before opening day my prep list includes switching the website over to winter mode, working with my ad agency to plan out the winter ad schedule, working with our creative people for print, radio and tv ads, billboards and social posts, creating and updating our winter calendar of events, working with our sales team to create promotions for products and events. My opening day prep list includes gathering together the information and writing the opening press release and sending it out to media, then scheduling and doing interviews with the media, updating the website and getting info to Spencer for social media updates, updating all the snow reporting outlets, communicating with Ashley and Spencer to film the first chair and the rest of the excitement on opening day, and I’m sure there’s tons more I could add! (V): Holiday Valley seems off to a good start. What expectations are there for the 2019-2020 season? (JE): We are eternal optimists and always expect a fantastic season! So far, so good! (V): Any new upgrades/ changes for this year? (JE): There is $3.3 million in improvements this year with highlights including 107 new HKD Impulse snowguns, a new Pisten Bully 600 Snow Groomer, a new website

(launching next week!), installing LED lights on the slopes in the East Complex and a big glading project where we cleaned out all of our 4 glades and several tree trails by removing downed logs, filling in gaps and low spots and removing little saplings and branches that hindered the path though the trees. The other big change is our ticketing. We are encouraging people to purchase their lift tickets on our ecommerce page at www.holidayvalley. com. If they buy at least a week in advance, they will save about $10, depending on the ticket they buy. These discounted rates are lower than last year’s ticket prices! If they want to have some flexibility on the date of their ticket they can upgrade for $5 and have the option to change the valid date of their ticket. (V): How was the turn out for opening day/weekend? (JE): We couldn’t have asked for better weather cooperation with blue bird skies! It was a great day, lots of smiles, really nice snow conditions and a good crowd! We even had 10 rails set up in the Rail Park. Jane also noted, “Get free lift tickets with lodging at the Inn at Holiday Valley from now through December 24th, do all of your holiday shopping with Holiday Valley gift cards for everyone on your list, then hit the slopes while everyone else is suffering at the Mall.” We are very excited for the upcoming season ahead, be sure to stay tuned to Holiday Valley’s website and social media platforms to keep up with all the upcoming events offered! When you think about it, it is pretty remarkable that our little ski town operates two resorts. HoliMont is the private resort that offers memberships for the entire family to not only ski or ride, but a family atmosphere, resort feel, and awesome

The biggest change HoliMont this year was the switch back to the grid for their power needs. For the last 16 or more years, HoliMont generated its own power for lifts and snowmaking.

events. I chatted with Greg Culver, HoliMont’s Marketing and Sales Director, to find out a little bit that is happening for the 2019-2020 season! (V): Greg, how long has you been with HoliMont? Greg Culver (GC): I have been there five years. (V): What does a day in your shoes look like while preparing? (GC): Oh boy! I manage all of our marketing and sales avenues so there is a lot to get ready for the season. We create all of our advertising in house so it’s a busy time of getting digital, print and promotional materials out and circulated. We meet with many different groups and companies to plan their visits to HoliMont and iron out the details. We attract ski clubs and groups from multiple states and Canada. Coordinating that schedule can be pretty involved. Our retail shop has new inventory rolling in everyday and my See SEASON page 10

may be tied to liver physical problems are: trouble with bowel elimination, sugar imbalances, flushing of the face and hot flashes, food allergies, groggy, sluggish feelings, headaches specially migraines, high cholesterol levels, hormonal imbalances, too much activity in the brain, low sugar levels, sleep problems, intestinal gas, bloating and distress, premenstrual symptoms, prostate problems, severe body odor, skin problems and varicose veins. In traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Western medicine the liver is seen as the seat of anger. Besides anger, moodiness can be a sign of liver imbalance. Choose a natural formula that enhances the mood by balancing the liver to increase energy and relieve nervous irritability and restlessness. It may be helpful for moodiness, fatigue, sleep problems and anxious feelings. There are some foods that are very building and supportive to the liver like raw red beets, raw carrots, zucchini, raw green leafy vegetables, black cherry juice and lemon water, also raspberries, blueberries, rose hips, hawthorn berries and cherries. Increasing dietary fiber may be beneficial for the liver. Fiber binds with toxins for removal from the body. I like the fiber combination Nature’s Three for its content of soluble and insoluble fiber –psyllium, oat fiber and apple fiber, it promotes regularity and tastes pleasant. It is recommended to choose an herbal combination that contains milk thistle, this herb contains the constituent silymarin, which has shown remarkable ability to enhance liver cells function and may help to stabilize liver cell membranes. This formula must also contain N-AcetylCysteine (NAC). NAC optimizes the production

At 5:30pm on Friday, Santa, his carolers, and Rudolph will stroll from around Katy’s, up through the village, to the famous ski tree, where songs will be sung and real live reindeer will arrive at 6pm. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

“I’ve been banking with CCB since I was 8 years old! I bank at CCB in Little Valley three or four times a week and the staff is always great. CCB’s advantage in building customer relationships is their focus on commitment to community. When I needed a loan to make improvements to my business and build my house, CCB was top-of-mind. Everything with the loan process went as expected with no surprises and CCB’s staff was always available if I had questions along the way.”

Beat on the Street:

What Is the First Thing You got in BIG Trouble for? By Chad Neal Even the “goodiest“ of two shoes has been in trouble. We all make mistakes because of our human nature. Curiosity, peer pressure or idiocy could be the main causes

Emily A. - Pulling the fire alarm at school...Kindergarten 1984

Matt M. - There was an abandoned, condemned house up the road from my house when I was a kid. I busted out 2 basement windows out of lack of knowing any better. I think I was 7.

Brand B. - A group of us found our way into the old Little Valley Central School after hours. We were met by the cops as we tried to escape our terrible decision

Ash B. - I snuck out at 16 and went to a college party and when my mom caught me, instead of going home, I turned off my phone so she hunted me down and dragged me out of the party... Quite the trouble maker....

of the trouble that found us growing up. It was all learning experiences for most of us. And if it wasn’t, it was probably because the punishment didn’t fit the crime. What was the first thing you got in BIG trouble for?

Rachel P. - My brother and I got into a wrestling match and put a butt shaped hole in the dry wall. My mom made us sit in chairs and stare at it for a week.

Todd P. - Got caught in the old Koch’s Brewery in Dunkirk NY and yes we were tasting the brews and that’s why we got caught
