Preliminary Results in Catt. County 35% Voter Turnout, Higher than Statistical Average By Carol Fisher

Congratulations to all candidates who ran to represent you and your interests in the coming years. Please remember that the following numbers do not include absentee or affidavit ballots. By law, the board of elections officials need to wait fourteen days after Election Day to get the results of these outstanding ballots. That two-week time frame allows for absentee ballots, which had to be mailed by November 4, to arrive at Statistically, all over America, the Board of Elections, especially only 17%-27% of those allowing extra time for those voters registered get out to vote in in the Armed Forces. We have felt the temperatures drop, the clocks turn back, and the winter season quickly approach. The announcement was made this week that snowmaking will begin at the end of this week as long as Mother Nature cooperates. With the crews getting the hills ready, we also have others in the offices that help to make the resort run smoothly. I took a chance to chat with Niki Klein, who was formerly the Sales Director and recently became the Resort Services Director.

Cattaraugus Counties. Well known and well loved by so many in our communities. Most recently on October 30th, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation honored Skip at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown for his many accomplishments. Greg Peterson interviewed Skip about his time at Holiday Valley Resort, his two successful family businesses (he is co-founder of both Southern Tier Brewing and Ellicottville Brewing Company) and his dedication as a member of each community. I spoke to the Foundation’s Executive Director, Tory Irgang and asked her why they chose to honor Skip. She responded with, “Honestly it’s been something we’ve been talking about for quite a while. Open Throughout NY State Nov. 16- Dec. 8

The deer regular season for our area opens Saturday, November 16th throughout NY State and will continue until Dec 8th. Cattaraugus County has long been one of the top outdoor locations for hunting with the lush and thick landscapes of the surrounding mountains. Continually ranking in the top for harvesting of deer, our state lands, state forests and Allegany State Park allow hunting and trapping during the appropriate season. Allegany State Park now allows Sunday Hunting. Private lands are not available unless owner gives permission each year - do not assume prior permission stands for current year. For places to hunt, safety tips, muzzle loading season and more visit the DEC website. Need a map of your property? Call our Real Property/GIS department at 716-938-2224. For information on hunting in Allegany State Park, pick up the brochure (or call 1-800-331-0543 to have one sent to you) or go to EnchantedMountains.com/ activity/hunting. You will need a NYS hunting license and a park permit (special regulations are found in permit). The permit can be obtained by going to the Park Police Office. Don’t forget to report your harvest! Begin your online game harvest report (Leaves DEC’s website) or call the toll-free automated reporting system at 1-866-GAMERPT (1-866-426-3778).

Publisher’s Word “Cheers!!”

The next time you and your friends partake in a pint or two, stop for a moment and realize you are enjoying a libation that’s been around

for, literally, thousands of years. Beer is one of the world’s oldest beverages and many historians consider the invention of bread and beer responsible for humanity’s ability to develop technology and build civilization. I guess the historians weren’t thinking about low-carb diets back then … Thankfully, the global business of brewing beer for the masses by super large companies has done little to dissuade a whole generation of microbrewers. These guys brought a whole new attitude and approach to brewing: flexibility, adaptability, experimentation, and customer service. And we’re all the better for it! It’s the 16th annual “Holiday Valley Beer and Wine

ECS Drama Club’s “Aladdin Jr”

Festival” this weekend and if the event’s anything like it was last year, those who go are in for a real blast. For the non-beer drinkers (perish the thought) there will be sample wines from over a dozen NYS wineries, but the big draw is for the beer. Microbrews of all flavors and types, along with awesome food and live entertainment spells ‘fun’ with a capital ‘F’. It’s truly a celebration like no other. By all means, get a ticket and go! In closing, dear readers, it’s very important for you to heed the wise words of The Villager’s own Ben Franklin, who said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” So, here’s to you and yours – until next week… JZ

Time for Cautious Weather Driving Notes From The Desk of Deputy Officer in Charge

Weekly Column By Jim Bouchard, Deputy Officer in Charge

This week was a rather eventful week for the police department. The incidents to report this week were the normal burglar alarms and incidents of that sort. There were numerous accidents due to the snowy weather that we sustained and also numerous incidents due to the high wind. The department participated in the STOP DWI Halloween enforcement period with

a dedicated patrol to crack down on impaired operators. Looking forward to the week ahead I expect our officers to be busy given it is about that time of the year were we see an uptick in the visitors to our area. As always, next time you are on the street and see one of our crew, stop and say hi! We will always have an interesting story for you!

Favorite Class: Spanish & Others

HOLIDAY VALLEY’S #1 SALES AGENT “CLIENT FOCUSED, RESULTS DRIVEN!”

DAVID A. BLANCHARD, GRI, ASSOC. BROKER

Essay Context Winner: Leilani Foster, 10th Grade ECS Student This may seem as a shock to most, but my tenth grade year so far is way easier than my ninth grade year. Maybe it’s because I’ve finally got the hang of this whole high school thing and I’m finally confident in what I’m doing; I’m making progress with what I want to accomplish this year; or maybe it’s because for once I actually like…no love my classes, especially one class in particular. This may seem like a shock to all but I happen to enjoy Spanish the most. Cue the gasps, the sputtering of words, and fainting, whatever it is you do. Yes, I like Spanish a lot. Maybe it’s because this year it actually makes some sense, even if we’re starting out with the worst stuff in the beginning. Preterite tense. Think you know how past tense works in English well enough to apply it to Spanish? Good luck buddy! There are horrible things like different endings for words; you have to know which words don’t follow the rules

for those endings because there are exceptions (ex: TED CHATS PPQV); and some of the words have completely different words for the past tense! It’s a bit of a hassle but like my Spanish teacher, Mrs. Emborsky, says, they really aren’t going anywhere… yippee. Well clearly I don’t love preterite tense but our teacher makes learning fun. Yes, I did just say I have fun in school. While teachers find boring worksheets and projects, we get to tap into our competitive side and play games like battleship, bingo, and even fun games on websites; though in battleship most people end up putting their ships into a diagonal direction and there’s a lot more accusations in English than Spanish. Sure, my class is **cough** annoying**cough, cough**…excuse me… but I actually have a pretty cool group to sit with. Sometimes the boys are a little annoying, which is to be expected, but I can’t exactly complain when I’m seated

next to my best friend. (Thank you Mrs.Emborsky!!) I don’t know, the school water could be poisoned or something to think Spanish is a pretty good class. We’ll never know. A Visit To Germany

One goodbye was not enough. Just when we thought we’d seen family and friends for the last time they showed up again. One more hug. “How many times did we say goodbye? That’s German hospitality,” said Hildegard Ratliff, my travel companion. It was my first trip to Germany. My colleague in tourism and co-author of Red & Blue: A Memoir of Two Alaskan Tour Guides, Hildegard took me to the city of her early years. It was not a typical sightseeing tour, but rather travel into the heart of German people

through the half-dozen families who welcomed us into their homes with meals and family celebrations. We stayed with Hildegard’s brother Manfred and sisterin-law Helga in Cologne, or more properly Köln as it is called by the people of Germany. Their apartment is in walking distance of a busy urban community. The streets and sidewalks around nearby Chlodwigplatz are always alive-I wished it were more so here. Even on jacket days people fill sidewalk tables, drinking beer and coffee, eating ice cream. Flower shops thrive, buoyed by the tradition of taking fresh flowers and chocolates when

invited to another home. 6084 Rte. 219 S. Decadent pastry shops Ellicottville, NY 14731 entice people inside, even 716-699-2000 if they only buy coffee. In one shop a honey-laden confection was covered with bees. On many mornings Manfred went out for fresh brotchen, hard rolls to eat with cheese and wurst. People push strollers, ride bikes through busy streets, and take dogs where they would be banned, or at least frowned upon, here. Whenever we went out for shopping or errands, it invariably included a stop for coffee or beer. A different pace, perhaps, than ours. Beer halls, also great places to eat, were filled at all times of day. Once, in late morning, we walked through the numerous rooms several times in search of a table. When none was available a waiter suggested we sit at a round table with two young men. We learned they were male nurses, friends since medical classes. By the time we parted it was with hugs. There, more than here, strangers strike up conversations in public places. Even at separate tables in a restaurant, people start talking to each other. From the first I was drawn to German homes, with their clean horizontal lines and light interiors. Wine glasses are kept prominently in living rooms, a tradition I heartily endorse. But while MLS#:B1228954 $579,000 Americans lean toward open 32 HoliMont Avenue Take a look today at this custom, multi level chalet only steps to the main chalet and the slopes of Holimont. - Kelly Andreano-R (3784010), Richard C. Smith-R (307-0205), Frank Higgins-R (378-8591). Now, a recap on the early elections. A hair over 1.8% (795 – about 88 per day) of the 44,741 active registered voters in Cattaraugus County voted early for the General Election in the nine-day period between October 26 and November 3. Statewide, 1.9% voters turned out. Statistically, all over America, only 17%-27% of those registered get out to vote in non-presidential years. In our case, that means 25%35% of you were needed to vote on Election Day to come up to the average for this type of election. It is a fact that in a presidential year almost 70% of voters turn out. That doesn’t bode well for local elections. The fall-out of not showing for local elections is that when the BIG ones come along, you are faced with people running for offices that you scratch your head and wonder how some folks ever got into the position to run. Well, folks by not voting, YOU put them there. And, again, according to surveys and polls, Democrats tend to fall short in these elections. In Cattaraugus County the rule was followed with early election turnout, with 331 Republicans voting early and only 311 Democrats. The remaining 153 were those who claim no party (98), Independence (36), Conservative (12), Libertarian (5), Working Families (1), and Green Party (1). Olean proved to be a preferred central voting location with 575 people voting at the Cattaraugus Campus of Jamestown Community College, and 220 rural voters choosing the Board of Elections in Little Valley polling site. Both sites were easily accessible for most citizens living within 30 minutes of either one. Robert Brehm, CoExecutive Director of the

Amazing Life of Spiders

Christmas In Ellicottville : November 29th - December 1st, 2019 : Town Of Ellicottville

State Board of Elections, in a PSA, confirmed that “More than 256,000 people voted, and the voters seemed to like the convenience of not having to vote on just the one day. Waiting times were short or non-existent in most places. Even in the few places where there were minor hiccups, voters were overwhelmingly favorable.” “Statewide turnout, unofficially, is approximately 1.9% over the nine days,” said Todd Valentine, the agency’s other Co-Executive Director, with a daily average of slightly more than 26,500 people availing themselves of the opportunity to vote early for the first time in New York State’s history. Kevin Burleson, Cattaraugus County’s Democratic Elections Commissioner stated that it will be difficult to tell whether the early voting opportunity attracted new voters or those who would normally vote just voted early. “We were very close to the upstate average. The county had a very successful rollout of early voting under a very short time frame using both new equipment and training people in its use. People were very receptive about the use of the iPad and seemed to enjoy the opportunity to vote early, particularly the snowbirds heading south and people having medical procedures. What was eye-opening to us was the number of healthcare professionals from Olean General Hospital who were delighted to have more hours available. With working long shifts and possible emergencies that could keep them from voting, they were thrilled to have alternate days. In 2020, there will be 27 days of early voting overall, nine each for the Presidential Primary, April 28, the State & Federal Primary, June 23, and the General Election, November 3. Skip did not brag about all he has achieved, save for the one thing he that makes him the happiest. And that is his wonderful family. He and his wife Barb have 3 children (one of whom is involved in the Southern Tier Brewing Company, one who is involved in the Ellicottville Brewing Company and one who lives and works out in Denver. And he has 8 grandchildren, five of which are enrolled in local schools, two go to Southwestern and 3 are enrolled at Maple Grove. Skip says they are all very active in the community as well. It was a pleasure speaking with Skip about the fantastic things he has done in his long life and we wish him many more years of active involvement in our communities. We end with my favorite quote from Skip about his achievements, “My biggest accomplishment is my family. Of all the work and things I’ve done, they are the best. They are just great.” unique and diverse faculty full of talent and drives to bring out the spark in every student that walks through their doors. Their varied styles of dance, instruction and training open the minds of students to try other styles of dance. “We want our students to be well rounded in my different styles (of dance),’’ said Kelli when we spoke. While the studio offers the tap, ballet and jazz you’ve come to expect, they also challenge dancers to branch out and try hip-hop, breakdancing and cheer dance as well. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Dance

Cont. From Pg. 9 years ago. “I had the great fortune of knowing and learning from Ms. Carol Joy Blatner and her daughter Debbie Molloy. They played a huge part in my dance education and making me the person that I am today.” Classes in acrobatics, tap and ballet are offered to students beginning at the age of three. Little ones are provided a wonderful foundation of dance disciplines, grace, posture and artistry. Five year olds can grab their pom-poms and add in cheer dance as well as hip-hop and at age seven students are invited to pop and lock like 80’s old

school while adding some 21st Century swag. Kelli pointed out that Fusion also offers adult classes and their adult hiphop class is always one of her favorites in their annual recital. “I love watching them (the adults) on stage and I think it’s inspiring for everyone to see.” In addition to the studio’s end of season performance, 2019 marked the 4th year Fusion has performed “Thriller” during the Halloween season. Kelli was honored to be invited by Villagio and Osteria 166 owners Nick and Kendra Pitillo to be part of the event. “I love that our performance of Thriller brings everyone together!”, she said, “It’s pretty amazing. An entire community getting together to appreciate the art and just have a great time!!” If you

missed it this year, never fear! You’ll get another chance in October 2020. Kelli exudes excitement and her love of the art of dance is unquestionable. She has created an atmosphere of growth for her students and surrounded them with a staff of talented, nurturing and professional instructors. Everything you need to know about Fusion Dance Studio, their classes, tuition, events and instructors can be found at www. fusiondancestudio.org or by calling 716-873-8320. As a dancer who first put on those tiny pink ballet slippers at the age of three, has never stopped dancing and has never forgotten who cultivated my love of dance, I can assure you that Fusion Dance Studio is where your spark will be ignited and your soul will soar.

Beat on the Street: What Pick Up Line did You Use the Most? By Chad Neal

As living beings we are motivated to reproduce and keep our bloodlines flowing. As humans we know the pleasure of this process and seek to go through the steps to make children, but try to keep it to the deed and not necessarily the whole process. Finding someone to participate in that recreational enterprise is the first step. Today the
