This week went as how I expected and believe that next week it probably will be very slow for the police department seeing as it is the week prior to the largest festival of the year, and also my favorite festival, Fall Fest!!! Holiday Valley Updates

By Brooke Szpaicher The Ellicottville Lacrosse tournament returned to Ellicottville this past September for the Third Annual Lacrosse Tournament. I had the pleasure of speaking with Ryan Powell, Rhino Lacrosse founder and President. Rhino Lacrosse is one of the main sponsors on the tournament. Powell gave some background of Rhino and some specs on the tournament itself. (RP): Rhino Lacrosse was established in 2005 in Portland, Oregon. I had moved out west to play professional lacrosse for the Portland Lumberjax. During my time living in Portland I saw a need for off-season lacrosse training programs, so I started Rhino Lacrosse. Rhino is my childhood nickname. We now

Stone Tower Talks For October Allegany State Park Hosts Events October 6th & 13th, 11 am

TENT SALE

The Allegany State Park Historical Society and The Friends of Allegany State Park will host walks on the weekends for park visitors to discover Stone Tower. These free events are open to the public and weather dependent. Program will continue every weekend until October 13th, 2019. The October dates are the 6th and the 13th.

Meet anytime from 11 am to 12:30 pm on Sundays at the APS Stone Tower (Program Site 17). History of Stone Tower: In June of 1933, Company 249 of the Civilian Conservation Corps (part of FDR’s New Deal) arrived at Allegany State Park who’s tasked was to constructing a stone observation tower on the summit of a hill. The men

commenced the Stone Tower in October 1933. Their campsite of World War I surplus tents was located just below where the tower now stands. Stone Tower includes a winding staircase leading up to the top deck, which consisted of wooden guardrails. The stone used to build the tower was all collected and cut in Allegany State Park. The octagonal shape tower stands at an elevation of 2,250 feet and overlooks Salamanca to the North and Red House Lake to the South. A carving of an arrow-pointing north was etched in the center of its upper deck. The Stone Tower was completed in the spring of 1934. Park visitors have never used the tower for anything other than recreational observational tower. Photo by Paul Crawford. Used with permission. For more information on this event please visit the Allegany State Park’s Facebook page.

A “BOOtanical” Halloween Celebration & Workshops At The Buffalo Botanical Gardens, October 19th

Buffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announces a fun, indoor family event, the BOOtanical Celebration. This Halloween celebration will be held on October 19 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. A special Halloween themed make-it, take-it workshop for kids, the Spooky Succulent Garden will also be held on October 19 at 10:00am or 2:00pm. Visitors are encouraged to attend the BOOtanical Celebration and register for one of the workshops. The BOOtanical Celebration, sponsored by Wegmans and Fidelis Care, will revel in all things creepy and crawly. Kids and families can make Halloween themed crafts at activity stations scattered throughout the Botanical Gardens, learn about spooky plants at the Botanical Gardens and enjoy Halloween treats and prizes.

Activities include hands-on crafts such as: a venus flytrap, a creepy paper pumpkin, a bat and moon creation, mosaic fall leaves and more. A special visit from the Ice Queen and Ice Princess from Emmalee’s Memories will be a highlight of the event and organizers highly encourage kids and parents to wear their costumes. Activities are best aligned for children ages 4-12, and caregivers of the youngest learners are encouraged to assist. The BOOtanical Celebration, on October 19 from 10 am to 4 pm, is included with Botanical Gardens’ admission - $12.50 adults, $11.00 seniors (62+), $11.00 students (13+ with ID), $7.00 Kids 3-12, Botanical Gardens’ members and kids 2 and under are free. the Botanical Gardens at the admission desk. A special Spooky Succulent Garden workshop for kids will be held during the BOOtanical Celebration on October 19 at 10:00am or 2:00pm. No prickly cacti are involved in this desert activity; instead, this fun workshop will study succulents. Succulents are desert plants that store water in their leaves and each participant will create an open garden space in a tray with these thorn-less plants. Organizers will sneak in an educational component and talk about desert biomes, where succulents live, and how they adapt to their environment. Children will add their own creative touches to their succulent garden by choosing from colored sand, gems and a spooky Halloween surprise. The Spooky Succulent Garden Workshop is $20 for the General Public and $15 for Botanical Garden Members. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, go to buffalogardens. com or call 716.827.1584 ext. 730. Use #BOOtanical and @ Buffalogardens when posting and tagging on social media. Golfing In The Fall At Byrncliff Golf Resort Makes For A Fantastic Fall Getaway

Photo courtesy Byrncliff Golf Resort and Banquets VARYSBURG, N.Y., – Following a great summer, here is Fall and its superb Fall foliage. And just like Fall has distinct planting benefits, Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on plants, gardeners.and golfers. That is right. Fall can provide some fantastic golfing opportunities in Western New York. Fall officially starts September 23rd, has an official 70 degree average temperature in Buffalo but this is just an average meaning that many days are above this number. Fall provides cool air, beautiful fall foliage and generally speaking less people on the golf course for faster rounds... Not that it is a problem for Byrncliff Golf Resort and Banquets, open year around, and working around the clock to provide top-level conditions. There are many choices to be had in terms of golf in Western New York, but many golfers still do not know

about Byrncliff Golf Resort, a true off the beaten path public course nestled in the rolling hills of Wyoming County 35mn South of Buffalo and 15mn East of East Aurora. You may not know the name, but you surely have seen its landmark with beautiful flags flowing on Route 20A on the way to Letchworth or downstate towards New York City. Byrncliff is a family owned business ever since Cliff Meidenbauer in 1967, enamored with the beautiful hills of Wyoming County, founded the business which has since grown to be one of the best golf resort south of Buffalo with an 18 hole par 72 golf course, hotel and restaurant catering both out of town Canadian golf visitors as well as local patrons willing to enjoy its casual atmosphere or enjoy a banquet in the midst of beautiful nature. The course has 6688 yards with rolling fairways, scenic backdrops, and beautiful trees and gardens. The slightly hilly layout makes it a fun and challenging course. It is surrounded by nature. Buffalo Golfer quotes it “there is no nicer and challenging course in the woods than Byrncliff”. So yes, when Fall comes, its trees and surrounding forests gets transformed into a Fall Wonderland. “There are so many reasons to come to Byrncliff” says Lindsay Eddy, VP of Sales and Marketing for the resort and daughter of Scott Meidenbauer, son of the founder. “The Byrncliff experience is all encompassing – golf, hotel,

bar and restaurant, banquets and more. Fall is a real great time to explore Byrncliff as our customers tell us it is truly amazing. It’s a place to make memories for a weekend or just for the day”. Because it is family-owned, management really cares about its employees, and all care as a result about the customer. The Meidenbauer’s just invested significantly to renovate their 25 hotel and banquet rooms to continue to attract more and more guests and be well positioned for the future. So whether you are looking for a Fall golf getaway, a company retreat or social event to a nearby affordable resort, the place to look could be Byrncliff Golf Resort and Banquets in Varysburg, NY. Contains lentian, a protein-rich polysaccharide that stimulates macrophages, which boost other parts of the immune system. Contains anti-viral compounds, a water-soluble lignin-rich fraction that has been found to have powerful antiviral activity. We go now to Maitake mushroom benefits: Helps the immune system fight abnormal cells. Helps prevent the destruction of T-cells. EVGV Trail unique. “This trail is on private property. The property owners had to open up their property to allow this to happen. They are offering something of value and getting nothing in return, and we want to thank them as well.” Mr. Hinman noted Terry Fuller’s BOCES class donated both the material and the labor to construct the pergola by the Arboretum that will serve as the trailhead. “We appreciate their support,” he added. Mr. Alianello went on to describe some of the work. Several trees had to be cut down, the shrub removed, and the waste lumber removed from the site. He went on to give a picture of the future trail, “It will be an eight-foot-wide travel way stone dust trail, similar to the Pat Magee Trail. He mentioned a bridge would need to be constructed over a creek at the end behind Tim Horton’s; just one of the many challenges for completing the first section. For now, Mr. Alianello is hoping the county will be able to mulch and seed the trail. That will allow grass to be established to keep the soil in place over the winter.

The Ellicottville Great Valley Recreational Trail eventually will be a 15-mile system of trails that will connect Great Valley with Ellicottville and east to the Holiday Valley Tubing Park. The trail will connect Ellicottville Central School with the Village and may include routes to the bike trails at HoliMont and the Finger Lakes Trail. There are several organizations in the South Towns area that are developing trail systems in WNY. By connecting to them, the EVGV Trail could become part of a network of trails that stretch all the way to Albany. The Committee is trying to forge alliances with those organizations. Fundraising continues in conjunction with the Town’s grant writer. Thus far no grants have been received, but the group will file applications next year. Fundraising continues with the annual ham/turkey auction, and more events are being planned. For now, the group is proud of what it has accomplished thus far. It’s like that old proverb about a journey of a thousand miles beginning with a single step.

Street Brawl, the confection is catching on. “We used to make 50 per week, but now it’s endless.” Ms. Dupris tells me. Mr. McFarland says they have made 400 in the past week. Each of the cooks has a hand in the process. Bob McFarland cooks the corned beef, Ms. Dupris makes the sauerkraut, and Mr. Pawlikowski assembles them. “It’s everything you have in a Ruben sandwich; the corned beef, the sauerkraut, the bread, and the parmesan cheese,” Mr. Pawlikowski says, with little fear of giving away the recipe. He goes on to mention all the ingredients are fresh, and all the meatballs are handmade. Over the years all of the kitchen staff have added their own touch to the recipe resulting in its awardingwinning flavor. Billy Finnerty chimes in with his origin story. “It all started when we were wondering what to do with some left-over corned beef from St. Patrick’s Day.” For his part, Nick Pitillo, says the event started four years ago when he was engaging in some friendly trash talk with some other restaurant owners. He says they were debating who had the best meatball, then one night it came to him; a Meatball Street

Brawl. “Everybody thought I was crazy,” he adds. But with the help of local companies: Presenting Sponsor the accounting firm of Dansa D’Artata Suchia, the Telesco Creative Group, and others the first street party was held in 2016. All the money raised goes directly to local charities: FeedMore WNY, Make a Wish, and the Michael Donald Perry Fund at the Response to Love Center, and locally, Rock Autism. The event also sponsors a scholarship for a local hospitality student. Each year the amount raised for charity has grown; from $13000 the first year, to this year’s record of $27,000. “When they announced it (Finnerty’s win), I was so happy for them,” says Mr. Pitillo in an example of how close-knit the Buffalo - Ellicottville restaurant scene has become. He says it’s not about the award or the prestige, but about the restaurant community coming together to have a great time and raise some money for charity. To that end, he says he wants to take the event nationally. “Any small city can do this event.” It seems the Meatball Street Brawl will be like the proverbial snowball rolling downhill. It will just keep getting bigger.

October 4th at noon when some food and craft vendors open. “I Got It” bingo opens at 4pm, at 5pm there is a Championship Wrestling match and then at 7pm, a home football game at Vets Park. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Beat on the Street:

Where was Your Hangout when You were a Teenager? By Chad Neal

Teenagers are way different now than when I was one. And Hollywood portrays them as something they are not, in this old guy’s eyes. As the age difference widens, one wonders how teenagers are so different now than we were years ago. We thought we got away with some crazy things, is it because our parents thought the same as we do now. Do kids

say they’re staying at a friend’s house all the while that friend is “staying” at their friends, and low and behold both are at the party at the cabin? Did we pull the wool over eyes and are the kids now doing that in an even more diabolical way? We always had a cool place to hang out. And there was always a party spot too. Where was your hangout when you were a teenager?

“straight,” and also “north,” “south,” “east,” or “west.” They’ve even learned to look to see where the sun is for a point of reference. Of course, noon and cloudy days can be a little tricky. For all the years I have been in Ellicottville, I am amazed to find roads and places I never knew existed. Thank goodness for GPS! This past Sunday we found ourselves in Amish country. Lacking the map I had recently ordered from Cattaraugus County’s Amish Trail, we meandered. Now, as I write, map in hand, I find that there are 144 Amish owned businesses along the wandering paved and dirt roads, along with a goodly number of those operated by non-Amish, whom the Amish refer to as “The English.” The “Trail” is a series of roads that take you from Gowanda and Perrysburg in the north, Randolph and Salamanca to the south, down a corridor on the east through Dayton, Cherry Creek and Ellington, on the west through East Otto and Mansfield, with the majority of the Amish businesses concentrated in Leon, Conewango, Napoli and New Albion. A search on line to amishtrail.com will provide you with all of this information, and a map.

invited into a bedroom with a bed piled high, in storybook fashion, covered with at least 25 quilts, the corners of which were patiently turned by the lady of the house. The toyshops are wonderful since toys are generally sold out of the toymakers work area. The earthy smell of sawdust fills the air and the shelves are filled with finely crafted wooden trucks, cars and airplanes, stuffed, faceless dolls and stick horses, marble mazes, race tracks and tree-towers, and unique board games you won’t find at WalMart. Nothing is better than a fresh, warm glazed donut the size of a sandwich plate, or buttery fudge and brightly colored jams displaying every color of the garden in rainbow hues. When you pull up, several barefoot kids in their blue dresses or pants, straw hats and bonnets often greet you on even the littlest of them, and an occasional dog or two. Taking a break from shucking corn or playing a game, they shyly wave, exhibiting both curiosity and friendliness. Every trade is represented with shops selling anything from cheeses, eggs and baskets to rugs, leather, lumber, wood and iron works. If you don’t find what you are seeking, they can generally fabricate it on order. Visit the shops during the weekdays

everyday chores to pray and visit. And, don’t worry about a language gap. Although the Old Order Amish in our area speak Pennsylvania German (Deutsch), they are bi-lingual, with English as a second language. Don’t let their formal schooling until 8th grade fool you. These are intelligent, clever, ambitious, hard-working people whose peaceful, pastoral religionbased life-style is a happy choice. Please know that they don’t accept credit cards for purchases, and out of respect for their beliefs, please refrain from taking photos of them. It’s okay to photograph their buildings, buggies, animals and farms, which make for beautiful memories of your trip along the Amish Trail. When you visit Ellicottville and the entire Southern Tier in fall, you are opening the doors to a virtual outdoor paradise, away from the hustle and bustle of workaday city life. Allegany State Park, Griffis Park and Nannen Arboretum offer peaceful getaways and visitors will find their own brand of fun or solace on biking and hiking trails, or exploring and climbing at Little Rock City (Salamancafree $) or Big Rock City (Olean-$$) which is hosting a gem, mineral and fossil show this weekend. Enjoy!
