In the great grand scheme of things, cultural revolutions don’t happen overnight; they evolve slowly. No one in Italy ever woke up one morning and said, “Oh gosh, it’s the renaissance! I better start painting!” Likewise, the electric vehicle (EV) revolution is happening, but its pace is more modest than you might think. In case you missed it, last week was National Drive Electric Week. Organized by PlugInAmerica, the group sponsored events across the county, mostly to educate the public about the advantages of EVs. One such rally was held in Ithaca last weekend, and your correspondent attended. Alas, Ithaca is just outside the trip range of my Chevy Bolt EV. See “ELECTRIC” Page 5

Looking for a fun and unusual outing? National Alpaca Farm Days is September 29th and 30th where alpaca farms nationwide will open their farms to the public. This is a great time to get out to alpaca farms and learn about alpacas, their background, their fleece and what can be done with it, the products the fleece makes, the tax benefits to owning alpacas, costs of raising alpacas, and of course, the babies or crias.

Genesis House of Olean is currently in the process of taking the former St. John’s Church convent in North Olean and making it into a home. The building dates back to the 1960s and is structurally sound in the fashion of an old brick and mortar schoolhouse. You can see the plans taking shape as the office and bedrooms are

Mayor’s Report As he likes to do, Village Mayor John Burrell started Monday night’s Board of Trustees meeting off with good news. Deanna Walker from NYCOM (New York Conference of Mayors) took a tour of Holiday Valley to consider it to host an upcoming training session. Ellicottville has been recognized by the state as being one of four communities that implemented a shared services program in the first year of the requirement. Mayor Burrell said the state might send some money the Town and Village’s way. The Western New York Scenic Byways Organization has placed 15 interpretive signs in Erie County explaining the local history. They now want to put up two signs in Cattaraugus County; one in Springville and the other in Ellicottville explaining the history of skiing here. The signs cost $5,000, and the group will put up the first $1,000 for the sign. The Village and Town will have to provide the remaining $4,000. The grant application to the Tony Hawk Foundation for the skateboard park has been submitted. Now, it’s just a question of waiting. Engineering Report

electric city bus. The diesel engine charges the batteries that power electric motors. It produces only a fraction of the pollution of a standard diesel bus, isn’t noisy, and doesn’t stink. Mostly there were Teslas, a handful of Nissan Leafs, and one other lowly Bolt driver like myself. We hung around each other a lot. The parade turned out to be a caravan from one parking lot to another. At the car show, there were 16 to 20 EVs on display, including mine. I had offered to give test drives in my car, and the three people that took the offer up were all suitably impressed. Though not one said they were going to run out and buy an EV. I asked the organizer of the event, Jim Klafehn, who drives a gorgeous Tesla Model X, what traits in common he’s noticed among EV drivers. He said EV drivers are all types: young, old, conservative, liberal, but had one common dominator. They are all early adopter types; those who started using computers back

in the old green-screen days. One guy walked up to me and started snarkily informing me that his Hyundai Kona Electric was better than my Bolt. It has a lifetime warranty on the batteries as opposed to the Bolt’s eight years. “How nice for you,” I said. He snorted and wandered off. I guess snobbery knows no bounds. The guy who parked next to me has been participating in Drive Electric Week for the past six years. Who knew it had been going on so long? He was driving a rarity: a plug-in hybrid Chrysler Pacifica. Only a few hundred were made. He was wearing a T-shirt that read, “Ask me about my electric car.” He told me his other car is a Bolt. I liked him. The one thing I noticed that connected all the EV owners was they were more than happy to show off their electric vehicles and evangelize for an electric future. It’s kind of fun to feel you’re at the vanguard of the next big thing. The EV revolution may not happen overnight. But, it’s coming.

I would definitely need to get a full charge along the way. My Plugshare app revealed no level three high-speed chargers along the way. Since I was leaving late Friday afternoon, it made sense to spend a night along the way. The app revealed a Holiday Inn Express in Painted Post that offers free level two (slower) EV charging to guests. I checked in, plugged in, and the next morning had a full charge to take me to the rally. Nice. The plan for the event was to have a parade of electric vehicles through downtown, then a car show in a local parking area. The reality was a bit, well, underwhelming. We met in a parking lot for the former Hobby Lobby store. At one end of the lot was a string of Tesla Superchargers with a couple of Tesla sedans plugged in. By far the coolest entrant was a giant diesel/

in the early 1800’s, drew would-be settlers heading west, affording them inns and taverns to rest themselves and the oxen, cows, and horses they bravely brought to their new homes. During the 1790’s, the Holland Land Company bought over 3 million acres of the land west of the Genesee River with surveyor, Joseph Ellicott, appointed local agent in Batavia. Getting to Franklinville, although not without its challenges, was simpler than getting over that cussed Bryant Hill Road, filled with brush, undergrowth, trees, creeks and valleys impeding rapid progress. Hence the history of many inns along the way, it could take a day to go a mile or less on the rough, unfriendly terrain depending whether travelers were on horseback (faster) or with a team of oxen (painfully slower) pulling wagons filled with all their earthly goods. Pushing on through Ellicottville, the “road to the west” made its way up Fish Hill Road (where there sat another inn with large pens for the travelers’ herds), through Mansfield and onto Dublin Road and beyond into Ohio. Those early pioneers may have not seen it as such, but it was truly an exciting time for our little geographic region. We

done by volunteers, and again we’re waiting on state grants. While she feels the building is beautiful, Lounsbury said a lot of work needs to be done, like making sure the bathrooms are working, and putting in an access ramp. “People don’t think about strollers and baby carriages, but they need a ramp too. Back stairs are decayed and need to be replaced. We need to put shelving in the basement for food and supplies.” Genesis House also maintains a shelter for families at 107 South Barry Street. But they need more room, according to Lounsbury. “We’re turning away a lot of families and singles. We don’t allow anybody using drugs or alcohol, and if people are trying to stay straight, then they know they are safe with us. This way, we won’t have to turn them away; we can put them in this facility (the former convent) or the other facility (near St. Stephen’s Church and Lincoln Park). And we still have the men’s shelter in Olean.” A few hundred volunteers come out to help with fundraisers, but volunteers are needed to help in the Genesis houses with laundry, meals and decorating. People are invited to join one of the many committees. “People can

either share their expertise or they can get an expertise. We need receptionists, and we need people to give tours. There are lots of fun things to do.” Genesis House will be holding their first-ever raffle on September 21st. “We’re selling 250 tickets at $50. The prize money is $2,000.” There are smaller awards as well, with the event taking place at St. Stephen’s Club in North Olean. “We’ll have the band Freddy and the Jets and some raffles and things there too.” They’re also planning a hot dog sale at the Allegany WalMart on Saturday, September 28th. Lounsbury said donated items are always appreciated, like coffee pots, crock-pots and other kitchen items. “Crock pot dinners help when our people move. We call it a crock pot ministry. People can just plug it in, since they can’t afford to go out for supper.” There’s some good news to report at the old Victorian home on South Barry Street. “We just got it sided, we got it roofed, we got a new kitchen. This week we got a grant to do new bathrooms, furnaces and hot water tanks.” Anyone wishing to help the Genesis House can call them 716-373-3354, or you can find them online.

of a truck the purchase should be possible. The Mayor knows of a used vehicle that is available. A motion was passed to purchase a truck for no more than $30,000 delivered. A question came up about repairing Monroe Street, with the comment, “The whole street is terrible.” The Village budgets $80,000 per year for all street work, and Niles Pierson has a fiveyear plan for maintaining the streets. Old Business Some garbage bags were put out by Plum Creek and weren’t picked up for days. The Board agreed to review the garbage and refuse laws. Mr. Burrell said the Village had agreed to reimburse the trailer park for replacing its water meters. After checking into it the Mayor discovered the meters had frozen, meaning it is not the Village’s fault. The Mayor withdrew the reimbursement offer. Engineer Niles Pierson is officially the Town’s

employee, although he does work for the Village. This means the Town is going to have to determine how much to pay Mr. Pierson while he is on reserve duty. The Town is required to pay him a minimum of 30 day’s pay, but his mission could last longer. Nevertheless, the Village will need to pay half the final amount. The noise law was discussed. Burrell said he had received complaints about construction noise early Sunday mornings. The law says on Saturday night the quiet time is from 10pm-8am Sunday morning. The Board will look into a way to have citations issued to offenders. That lead into a discussion about the bar noise on weekends; about which the Mayor has also had complaints. The Mayor pointed out it does no good to complain to Mary on Tuesday about noisy neighbors the previous Saturday. The meeting was adjourned.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!
