Ellicottville - Holiday Valley (Win-Sum Ski Corp.) has donated an automatic awning to enhance the patio at the Rotary Auditorium and Nannen Arboretum event venue. This 20’ X 40’ awning will provide a perfect transition from the auditorium patio to the arboretum.

It’s been a delightful weekend of celebration and reunion for two of Ellicottville’s beloved citizens, Suzie Evans and John Ditcher, now Mr. and Mrs. John Ditcher. You likely know Suzie’s folks, Evan and Joyce Evans, whose presence in Ellicottville have left an imprint over the many years they have been members of our community.

HoliMont The Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) heard a presentation from Ed Youmans and Sue Quattrone from HoliMont regarding several improvement projects for the popular ski area. They are seeking NYS sales tax abatement relating to their investment of roughly $948,000 at the resort. The enhancements include replacement and upgrades to some of the snow making guns and widening some of the ski runs. Also included is the purchase of a new groomer and some new shuttle buses. But, the most significant change will be to return the resort to the power grid and no longer using the power plant for dayto-day power. Mr. Youmans said the old power plant would be kept to provide power should the network fail, but went on to explain the need for the change. The facility has outgrown what the power plant can provide. He said the old plant could not provide enough power to run the snow making at full capacity when the lifts are turning. The old plant could provide at best about 2.7 megawatts, and National Grid says they can provide See “CCIDA” Page 9

The Code Enforcement Officer noticed some discrepancies between the submitted plans and the actual remodel for this home on Elizabeth Street. Ultimately, the second set of plans were approved.

Story and Photo by, John Thomas, Staff Writer Public Hearings The Village Planning Board on Tuesday night started with three public hearings. The first was for a porch addition for a deck on Mechanic. It was followed by See “Planning” Page 9

Welcome to Rock N’ Roll Weekend extra officers or patrols added. This festival is one that I do not foresee many issues beyond parking complaints. Looking a few months past this week though brings us to the annual Fall Fest. The police department has been preparing for Fall Fest for quite some time and has faith in the efforts of all that will be involved in this event. There will be more information on policing and the festival in the coming week’s articles. With that as always, next time you are on the street and see one of our crew, stop and say hi! We will always have an interesting story for you!

We are also thrilled that over 40 percent of NIGHT LIGHTS visitors have never visited the sculpture park before. We’re glad that the lights entice people to come out and discover this incredible artistic treasure. Executive Director Corey Wiktor reported the solar generation project for Portville is about to close and begin providing power to the community. The Ashford project ran into more wetland than they had anticipated requiring the company to perform more mitigation than planned. While on the subject of solar, last July the CCIDA put a six-month moratorium on accepting new applications for solar power projects. They put the hold in place due to a variety of questions the Board had about solar projects. Among them were what happens to the land once the lifetime of the solar installation is up? What happens to the panels? What

the porch extension. The Village Attorney pointed out the Board may require that phase one of the remodel (the staining) must be completed before a building permit for phase two (the porch extension) can be issued. The Board issued an approval with the condition the materials and style of the porch extension must match the existing home and deck. Washington Street Businesses In other business, the Board approved the special use permit for the Ratchet Hatchet entertainment venue on Washington. The applicant stressed the business will operate limited hours, mostly weekend nights, and will have staff to monitor the activities. The targets will be freestanding, not attached to any interior walls, to abate the impact and noise. The Board approved the hanging sign for the business. Likewise, the Board approved an accessory use permit to allow Adventure Bound to create the Ellicottville Coffee Company in a portion of the store. Adventure Bound will add a coffee shop/bakery to the existing retail, commercial business. Oops on Elizabeth Street A long, sometimes contentious discussion broke out over the remodel of a home on Elizabeth Street. The plans for the addition had been approved by the Planning Board in April. In the meanwhile, Code Enforcement Officer Kelly Fredrickson had noticed discrepancies between the plans approved by the

Board and what was being built. Some of the windows were different, and the roof appeared to be higher than initially approved. Mr. Fredrickson was concerned with how the height of the roof was being measured. The officer issued a stopwork order until the Board had a chance to update the Architectural Design Review of the new plans. Architect Jay Braymiller explained the set of plans he sent to the contractor was different from the approved plans. He said he had made a mistake and took responsibility for it, though he offered no remedy. At the meeting he submitted a set of plans he said reflected what was now being constructed. Mr. Fredrickson was unable to attend the meeting. Planning Chair Nancy Rogan said, “We’ve never had a situation like this.” Several of the windows had been changed from doublehung to transom style windows, and the elevations are not clear on the final roof height. One of the Board members made a strenuous objection saying, if the Board approves a set of plans, only those plans may be used for construction. If changes need to be made, they must be approved by the Board. In looking over the elevations, Village Planner Gary Palumbo said the roof is 27 feet 10 inches high keeping it just within the 28 foot maximum. Ultimately, the Board decided to perform an architectural design review on the new drawings. The Board passed a motion approving the architectural design.

idyllic part of America. In Sarah’s words, “Ellicottville captures you … grabs hold of you, and wraps its arms around you. I felt as if I were home again, as soon as I came back.” Yeah! Ellicottvillians. You know that feeling. It’s real to others, too! Suzie and her family were delighted to have Sarah as part of her wedding party. Suzie

commented, “This week has been multiplied by infinity for all the love and blessings we have felt from everyone, especially with my soul sister, Sarah, here. It’s as if she has always been here, we are connected that deeply. I am enriched and a better person because of her.” Reasons enough for you and your teen to look into a year abroad with AFS.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!
