FALL FOR FRANKLINVILLE

Saturday, September 14th • 10 am Park Square, Franklinville

Ellicottville’s oldest and largest event, is a huge economic engine for the village and provides a major trickledown effect. It benefits many not-for-profits along with our business community and our residents. Over $70,000 is generated in various donations from the festival events. The popularity provides an opportunity to showcase our area and its attractions converting many to become repeat visitors and second homeowners. We strive to provide a better-quality experience

that will attract a demographic that truly wants to enjoy all the area has to offer. “We’ve received valuable feedback from our members and residents based on the results of 2018 and we are confident this year’s festival will be our best to date” stated Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. Griffis Sculpture Park is transformed with creative lighting for a show called Night Lights at the Griffis Sculpture Park on September 14th from 6-10pm. The Park already beautifully combines art with nature and attracts visitors far and wide, but now you can see it in a whole new light. This year there will be a Night Lights Evening Dinner celebrating the 50th anniversary of Griffis Sculpture Park! It will be a farm to table dinner that will kick off

Night Lights. The tickets are $75 each with VIP tables of 10 available for $950. There will be music and a live iron pour. Check our website as the date gets closer for more information. Over 250 sculptures reside at the 300-acre Griffis Sculpture Park, making it the United States largest sculpture park. The park is owned and operated by the Ashford Hollow See “GRIFFIS” Page 6

Tuscan Moon Culinary Fund Raiser Ellicottville Rotary Club Reaches Goal at Annual Event

By Carol Fisher Some folk suggest that I am mad as a hatter because of the topics I write about. Likely, the first picture that pops into your head is the Mad Hatter in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” The truth is that in pre-20th century, unfortunate hat makers used mercury nitrate to turn fur into felt for hats. Sadly, the mercury caused craziness, hence the term, mad as a hatter. If you don’t think I’m mad, perhaps you think I am just crazy as a loon. But, loons aren’t crazy birds at all. However, they do have a weird call that is reminiscent of the sounds heard in an asylum for the insane. Call me mad or crazy, I shall still remain cool as a cucumber, which describes the cooler-than-the-air inner status of a cucumber in the fields in hot weather. I’ve discovered many interesting See “METAPHOR” Page 7

By Chad Neal This past Saturday evening the Rotary Club of Ellicottville put on their annual end of summer event at the Holiday Valley Cabana Bar. The Tuscan Moon Gourmet Dinner Party was a huge success. The tickets sold out to over 200 guests as they “reveled in the great atmosphere and excitement of

the Silent Auction Table and food stations”, Greg Capppelli wrote in a press release. The Rotary put in a lot of effort making baskets and organizing the event to raise money for Family Support and Rotary Foundation for Youth. Cappelli also wrote, “Thanks to the generosity of Ellicottville See “SUCCESS” Page 7

Changes Coming to Town Planning Board to get New Chair and Vice-Chair

Board Announces Signore Resignation

On Monday night Vice-Chair of the Town Planning Board, Richard Dayton brought the meeting to order in the absence of Margaret Signore who has resigned as Chairperson. Mr. Dayton is Vice-Chair and is serving as Chairperson until a new Chair and Vice-Chair is named by the Town Board. Dayton took a moment to express his appreciation for Ms. Signore, saying he wanted to “express his gratitude for the dedication and civic service” of Ms. Signore. He added she would be “greatly missed.” The rest of the Board nodded in agreement. John Zerfas, a member of the Town Board, asked if anybody on the Planning Board pre-dated Ms. Signore on the Board. No one did. Regarding filling the post, Mr. Palumbo reminded the Board that members serve for seven years. If a vacancy comes up, someone will be nominated to fill out the rest of the former member’s term. That way the Board has a seven-year rotation. Mr. Zerfas said the Planning Board should make recommendations for Chair and Vice-Chair to the Town Board who will vote on the nominations.

Niles Pierson attended the Town Board meeting last Wednesday night. While that may not be unusual for the Town Engineer, what was unusual was the way he attended: by speakerphone. Town Engineer Niles Mr. Pierson is on Pierson on Coast Guard Reserve duty with Reserve duty in San the Coast Guard in Antonio with a fellow San Antonio, Texas enlistee. and phoned in his report from there. Town Supervisor Matt McAndrew offered privilege of the floor to start the meeting. There were no members of the public attending. Supervisor’s Report

I just wanted to say thank you to the children, parents, and grandparents of the soccer leagues over the summer. I refereed 29 games

in 16 days, most times two games in one day. Working with the young players, with their energy and enthusiasm, keeps me young. In looking forward to next year’s soccer season, I have to admit that, though I feel young at heart, my body tells me I’m getting older. I want to especially express my thanks and appreciation for the women’s team that won the World Cup. They are an inspiration to young soccer players everywhere, especially young girls. And special thanks go out to

If you are new to the use of essential oils or have been using them for some time, let me say to you that authentic and pure frankincense essential oil is an absolute favorite. It is my favorite! To the people of ancient Arabia, frankincense was a very special substance once considered more precious than gold. Indeed, this important commodity was recorded for the world to remember as one of the three distinct and valuable gifts brought to the Christ child by the wise men. But its prestige wasn’t isolated to that historic event. Frankincense- a sticky resin that oozes from gnarly, wild growing trees throughout northeast Africa and South Arabia-has been used for medicinal and spiritual purposes for more than 5,000 years. Frankincense was the basis of the ancient economy for over 2,000 years. It was the wealth of the world, and its pungent, clear scent wafted exclusively through the palace hallways of kings and royals. It was considered a “a holy anointing oil” in religious ceremonies. The tree’s resin is extracted

The committee reviewed last year’s event and discussed several changes including a reduction in the number of vendors and the Chamber’s continuing effort to raise the quality of vendors. Somehow, “row” has translated itself into “road” but still maintains the reference to a difficult situation. Ellicottville is known as a place to go for a fun time. So, when you tell your sassy kids to mind their P’s and Q’s, you know the source of that comment. And, I’m not pulling your leg which might be fun these days but not so much for the poor victims of thieves of old who tripped their victims, or pulled at their legs making them fall, to rip them off. When the resin crystals are harvested, they are hand sorted to determine quality, with the best frankincense having lighter color and larger clump size. Because of the unique growing conditions in the southern mountain range of Oman in Africa, the opalescent frankincense from slow-growing trees in that region is considered to be superior to all other frankincense resins in the world. Once the resin crystals are sorted, they are crushed, submerged in a bath of oil, and then distilled. Its purity and authenticity make this oil the “king of oils”. No wonder I love this essential oil so much. I can’t stop smelling it and enjoying its warm, balsamic natural fragrance. It is a unique and wonderful treat for your skin, especially the face as it has properties that may help with rejuvenation and beauty of the skin. It is widely used in skin care products for aging and dry skin. When combined with lavender oil it may help with scar tissue. John Hopkins University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem determined that frankincense smoke might help with depression and anxiety in mice due to chemical compound called incense acetate. It may also help with grief. Traditionally, frankincense resin was burned to emit an aroma into the air. Beat on the Street: What Games Ddi you Play on Car Trips? By Chad Neal

The classic American road trip is something most who read this will have memories of. The excitement leading into the insanity of it and finally reaching the destination, only to have to turn around and revel in the experience on the way back is the story line a lot of families have. The passing of time was
