Delevan NY is now home to the largest family of Barheads on the planet.

By Carol Fisher Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary is raising the bar (BarHeaded Geese, that is) in Delevan NY. Here’s an amazing trivia fact … the world’s highest flying bird is an Asian Goose that can fly up and over the Himalayas (you know, Mt. Everest, at 29, 029 feet). Imagine! No longer called upon to perform such astonishing aerial feats, the imported Indian Barheads

now residing permanently at Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary are grooming their feathers for this Sunday’s visitors at the annual Wild Wing Festival from noon to five. A visit to the Sanctuary, open to the public only a few times a year, ought to be on everyone’s “bucket list.” It is the largest covered waterfowl sanctuary in the entire world. Here you will find over 700 See “GEESE” Page 6

By Chad Neal If you’re from Ellicottville you most likely know Rachel Northrup. She grew up in this town and has settled down here with her fiancé Scotty McGee. She owns the sock shop in town called The Purple Doorknob on Monroe Street. Among many endeavors and travels McGee and Northrup have become a family with their son Easton, and now they want to venture more into eclectic business and will be opening a new store on Washington Street where the M&T Bank used to reside. The store is going to offer books and vinyl records and turn tables to start. This venture is more in the hands of McGee, but they are still in it together. McGee and Northrup met in Maine while McGee was traveling there in 2016. He is originally from the south, but has acclimated to the See “BOOKS” Page 7

Mayor’s Report As Village Mayor John Burrell likes to do, he started off the Board of Trustees off Monday night with good news. The Village has received the sales tax revenue check from the county that is greater than the same period last year. The sales tax collected from the county makes up 45% of the Village’s general revenue. The Village’s fiscal report is completed and is available on the web site. The Mayor brought up the eight new water meters recently installed at homes in the trailer park. He said because the trailer park homeowners are customers of the Village, the Village should pay for the meters. The Board went into executive session to discuss an issue with the trailer park. Upon coming out, the Board passed a motion to pay for part of the repair work on the road into the park. The Board said they would pay one third the cost of the repaving of the first 20 feet into the park. The total for the paving is $1,800; the Village will pay $600. The Board passed a resolution to put up a sign prohibiting parking on one side of the extension of Madison. The Mayor See “BUSINESS” Page 3

endangered and protected ducks, geese and swans of 78 species, many not seen anywhere else in the US. The ponds and grounds are lovely and clean, a feat not to be taken lightly considering geese relieve themselves every 16 seconds. Do wear shoes suitable for ease in walking the paths of the 1.5 acre site, especially after all the gully-washer rain storms we have been experiencing. The sanctuary includes four ponds, three heated barns and one 10’ rubber duckie. Open on Sunday, August 25, from 12-5, $5 will get you onto the grounds. A local band, The HickUps will provide music, and food will be available for purchase from the Colden Mill. Essentially, it all began in 1983 with three wild ducks making an impromptu visit to a property in Holland, NY owned at that time by Milt and Rosemary Miner. A midnight snatching of one of the ducks by an owl led to a resolve by Milt Miner to protect the other two. Lacking a crystal ball, they could not have known how

Most moths forage at night, but these beauties are out in daylight, sipping at the nectar of the flowers in your garden with their long proboscises. One of summer’s fleeting gifts, the hummingbird moth, unlike hummingbirds who return annually and can live five to nine years, has a lifespan of only three to four weeks. So enjoy them. Speaking of birds, I am sorry I did not keep count the number of jars of grape jelly we have purchased this summer. Not only do our many orioles love it, but the catbirds, grosbeaks and hummies dip in for a regular snack. Need to buy some Welch’s stock! There is a shindig going on this weekend at the Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary in Delevan. While researching for an article, I discovered that I could adopt one of their 700 geese, ducks or swans. I’m intrigued with the bar-headed geese because they appear to effortlessly fly over 29k foot Mount Everest, so I adopted one and named it Aerial. Geese easily live to be 20 or more, so Aerial might be around to help celebrate my 100th birthday! I encourage you to take a ride there this Sunday, or find them on line and adopt one of your own. about a year ago “Rachel was going through a “minimalist” phase, she started getting rid of everything in the house.” “So I decided to clear out our bookshelves by selling books online before they disappeared too. After those books sold I ended up pursuing that and started finding other sources for books that I could sell online. Long before this happened Rachel and I would talk about what type of store we could open in Ellicottville. So when the books were doing so well online we started playing around with the idea of selling books in the basement of the Purple Doorknob. But before we implemented we found out about space that had just become available that we will be opening up in. It was a great location on the main drag, and Rachel’s family (The Northrups) have a history in the building which she liked. Her great uncle used to run a millinery (hat store) there and her grandfather Wilbur “Doc” Northrup the dentist in town way back when used to have

his office upstairs above it. So that appealed to her and we just decide to go for it.” When asked about the wares they will be selling McGee said, “gently used books and vinyl records. Also turn tables (record players). We would eventually bring in some new books and have ideas for other things as well, but they will come in time. People have asked us about coffee, and maybe someday, but not for now.” McGee clarified that they will take donations and folks can drop books off at The Purple Doorknob (9 Monroe Street) until they open McGee’s at 11 Washington Street. And if someone has more than 2 boxes of books they can call 716-687-8238 and arrange for someone to pick them up. McGee expressed his adoration as well saying “The people in Ellicottville are great and have been very helpful during the process. I was lucky enough to pick a great fiancé that everyone around here likes enough to help me out.”

You will die for Beef Tenderloin from Centerplate & John Harvard’s; The Public House will offer pan-seared scallops while the Seafood Lasagna from Meyer’s Steak House is out of this world. Vegetarian and Gluten Free diners will have choices as well. The feature of the event is the dessert table where Watson’s Chocolates and Cupcakes from “Cupcaked” surround the extra special cakes, cookies and tarts created by chef Tom Kneeland. The menu is finalized, you can find a copy on page 8 of this publication. An extensive silent auction & short live auction provide some great bargains for all who attend. The LIVING Tour will emphasize upscale living spaces in the very center of Ellicottville’s busy and festive hub of activity as well as some located in the hills around Ellicottville’s ski resorts. In speaking with Paul D. Maurer of PDM Marketing & Media, he has said, “We have had such success with our 12 previous tours, helping property owners rent or sell their living spaces, that we decided Ellicottville was ripe for this program!” He went on to describe the tour as

an open house for real estate and the public will be able to take tours of each property. All aspects of the Living Tour are free and open to the Ellicottville locals and people from the surrounding areas. Everyone involved in this new venture seems to agree that the Tour is a fun and optimal way to show off Ellicottville’s notable properties with its outstanding recreational and entertainment options. Brian McFadden, Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce executive director, in an email said, “The organizers of the eight-year-old annual Buffalo Living Tour parade of upscale living options have partnered with the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce to bring the Ellicottville event to our community,” and that

of sultry sunny days, warm fragrant breezes through open windows, and dreamy mornings sitting on the deck, sipping coffee, listening to my chimes and the horses talking down the road, and peacefully watching the world go by. The gangly deer triplets visit often with their mama, spots still bright white on their red-brown coats. They throw back their heads, contort their lean bodies, and kick up their lanky legs as they race around the side yard and then skid to a stop under the apple tree to grab a snack of fruit fallen to the ground. Mom pulls herself up tall on her hind legs, tugging at the crimson treats above her head. She then goes off to the side, watching as her little ones romp in the sunshine. I know that feeling. Ahhh! The other day, my neighbor posted a photo of a hummingbird moth – it is called by a number of names - remarking that she has spotted three of them recently in her flower garden. I have had them visit in summers past and anyone who is lucky enough to spy them is immediately enchanted. One can easily mistake them for a hummingbird until she realizes that it is

the next steps of building a small duck house and finding the two boys mates could turn into a need for larger quarters for their 100 ducks by the end of that year. Thankfully, they discovered a market for ducks and were able to sell them and solve their problem. Or, so it seemed. The following August Milt was wondering what to get Rosemary for her birthday. He discovered a friend was moving and needed a new home for his 13 exotic geese. Birthday gift resolved. All progressed smoothly until a 1999 beak count of 175 proved too much for the small property in Holland. Thanks to a deal with an uncle who had a large property in Delevan, loved waterfowl and had a dream of a refuge, his property soon became the future home for the Miners and their feathered friends. Once they executed plans for a 7,000 square foot residence designed to support the netting covering the entire area, the sanctuary became reality. Making a home for the many birds they already took into their family just wasn’t enough for Rosemary, the 100-pound bird mama. She has amusing tales of collecting eggs on the Alaskan tundra, or along the Kenai River, alone, having been dropped off by

Justin D. - Caught my mom’s car on fire when I was 16. Pretty sure I could have died that day. And it wasn’t from the fire.

Manda L. - Choked on a cream saver when I was 7. Guess that’s what happens when you sneak into the hard candy and run around with it in my mouth. It was the longest 10 minutes of my life.

Catherine G. - I got run over by a truck and almost died right before starting college. Docs Duane B. - Hit by a car at 4 said I was their miracle years old. Run under and drug a few hundred yards. case.

perish and avoiding them is the game of life. It can come very close at times and not take you on the final voyage, and that close call is etched in the annals of your brain. Sometimes you may not know that you’ve brushed deaths robes, and the fate of life can be very mischievous by showing just how easy it would be to snip us out. What’s the closest you’ve come to dying?

Josh H. - Can’t decide. Hitting a tree at 60 head on, twice collapsed lung, or a ruptured appendix I neglected for 3 days.

Gary L. - When I was a kid the Coast Guard had to save my mom and I who were sailing on Lake Erie and got caught in a bad storm. I was pretty sure I was going to die that day.

V i e ws f r o m t h e V i l l a g e Ellicottville’s First Annual Neighborhood Party!

Photos/ Chad Neal/Michael Hughes

Trey and Mila Clauss along with neighbors set up a wonderful Neighborhood Party on Madison Street Sunday. So much fun was had by little and big kids alike. Brian McFadden was in the dunk tank, along with several kids. And the bounce house was shaking all day. Dina’s food truck was there serving Tacos and Sally’s Snowcones were taking the heat down a notch. The street was shut down to traffic and over a hundred people enjoyed food and drink and fun. Plans are in the works for more, perhaps at the trailer park in the fall.
