Rock Autism is an event that donates funds raised to organizations serving youth living with autism. “Rock Autism contributes to the professional development and growth of every person across the spectrum.” They have programs and support that connects the “youth with autism to a field of

study in music, film and the arts while giving them a chance to achieve marketable talents after graduation.” This year’s headlining artist is Citizen Cope who was a last minute addition because the previous headliners had to bow out due to illness. ELLICOTTVILLE N.Y. – What a weekend to sample all the great food that makes up the Ellicottville cuisine scene! With the new judging format, cooking demonstration, and Ellicottville’s version of Chopped, it was the second largest Taste of Ellicottville ever. “All of the restaurants did an amazing job and stepped up to the plate with delicious healthy and gluten free dishes. Of the Taste events I have seen this summer in Western NY we are the only one that limits the participants to local only, plus of course our long-time sponsor and partner, the Seneca Allegany Casino & Resort”, stated Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Chamber. “We are fortunate See “TASTE” Page 7

Story and Photos by John Thomas, Staff Writer

The Village Planning Board held two public hearings on Tuesday night to consider applications for a bed and breakfast and a new deck for a home on Rockwell. Several of the other applications featured changes that will affect a few businesses along Washington Street. The first public hearing concerned an

application for a special use permit to establish a B&B in a home on Jefferson Street. The deck for the house on Rockwell was discussed at the Village Zoning Board of Appeals last week. (See the Village ZBA Balks at Deck story in this issue). Mr. Palumbo said neither he nor the Kelly Fredrickson – the Code Enforcement Officer – had received any comments See “ATTRACTIONS” Page 8

Alpine Kennels on Hencoop Road The Perfect Doggy Haven for Your Next Vacation

By Carol Fisher Rare is the pet owner who doesn’t experience a tad of anxiety about leaving Fido in a kennel when heading out of town for a day or more. As the parent of many fur-babies over the years, I have had the luxury of having dog “aunties,” neighbors and friends who have graciously helped in puppy care while we traveled. One time several years ago we had no choice but to use a kennel in the region. From the moment we walked through the door, our princess made it quite clear she

wanted no part of the joint, whining and carrying on as if she were going to the gallows, especially when we made a dash for the door. After a thirty minute drive back home, we barely made it through the door when we had a call from the owner of said establishment telling us that our girl had escaped while being on a leashed potty break. Like a miniHoudini, she wriggled herself out of her harness and, in a flash, bolted. Local police were called in on the case, but the owner wondered if perhaps we might come back and See “KENNEL” Page 7

Scam Alert ... Page 2

Notice from the Ellicottville Police Department The Ellicottville Police Department would like to alert the citizens of the surrounding communities to a popular craigslist scam that seems to have had multiple attempts to strike our area. The scam involves the pretend-buyer mailing a check for more than what the item is listed for on Craigslist. The scammer then asks the seller to mail back or wire (for instance via Western Union, MoneyGram, a cashier’s check or money order) the overpaid amount.

Jamestown Regional Celtic Fest.

Celebration in Mayville, August 23 & 24

By John Thomas; Staff Writer A homeowner on Rockwell Ave. was before the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Village last week. The Board held a public hearing for his requested Area Variance. The applicant was seeking a variance in the front yard setback to build a deck extending from the second-floor apartment of a previously built garage. The lot in question is a corner lot at Rockwell and Park streets. Village Planner Gary Palumbo said when a lot borders two streets; the front yard setback applies to the sides along each street. The Village ZBA had already granted a variance for a ground-level deck to be built on the lot between the home and the garage. The proposed deck from the apartment is on the opposite side of the garage to serve an accessory apartment. The Board mentioned the applicant had already received a variance for the ground-level deck in 2017. The deck has not yet been built. It was here when one of the Board members objected to the fact that the deck was not included in the original

show that many other visitors have noticed our unique and special community and chosen to spend their vacations with us. This is apparent when you take in the sheer volume of weddings being celebrated in Ellicottville. I for one have noticed in my career that we seem to be gaining momentum as a destination spot and popular “hotspot” tremendously. It is a welcome sight for me to see that so many more people are seeing what many of us have saw years ago. Ellicottville is a great community. I would like to just thank everyone for the job we have done in this community to make it such a welcoming place for locals and visitors alike! With that as always, next time you are on the street and see one of our crew, stop and say hi! We will always have an interesting story for you!

The weekend kicked off with the weekly Stroll the Streets in the Village on Friday. Our officers noted the attendance for this event seems to be increasing as the week’s progress. On that note, the police department has noticed that our summer months have increased volume for us tremendously. Ellicottville is not only a winter destination any more. August’s Winner: Mud-Puddle Muses fractured sunshine. The sheer mass of squirming tadpoles is dizzying. We hunch, squat, point, admire. Search for the unicorns. Those rare midmetamorphosis creatures with arms, legs, and tail still intact. We go to the Ellicottville Library, always welcomed by the friendly and thoughtful faces there: Laura, Cathy, Sis, and so many more. We read about tadpoles, and caves, the bloodstream, flowers, snakes, and spaceships. We listen to the flowing stream, and the

August 15th - August 21st, 2019 ~ The Villager ~ made Hummus Best Appetizer: Finnerty’s Tap Room; Irish Combo (Rueben Meatball and Rueben Roll) Best Dessert: Cupcaked; Oreo Mousse Cup Kid’s Choice: Holiday Valley; Korean BBQ Octopus The kid’s choice was decided by Jackson, Daniel and Cayda Kruszynski, all 10 and under, and they did an amazing job!!! We are very fortunate to have been able to work with the local restaurants here in Ellicottville and our partner the Seneca Allegany Casino & Resort, and if it wasn’t for all the hard work and time everyone took for this event it wouldn’t have run as smoothly as it did. We cannot thank each and every business enough for making Taste of Ellicottville 2019 the success that it was. Everyone worked as a team and it paid off. The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce also would like to take the time to thank a few people that made the weekend move more smoothly. The staff of Monroe Street Brick and Brew took it on their own to make sure the tables

and chairs were set up and taken down on their side of the street. They also were quick to step up and help in any and everything including trash disposal and deliver complimentary slices of their delicious pizza to all the restaurant tents. Mark Chudy and Joe Folts for keeping the trash cans empty and last but not least our two crossing guards Ron Ball and Shawn McKenna. Chef Dean and his team from the Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino also worked hard to make sure the weekend was a success. Not only was Chef Dean the emcee of the cooking competition but he also asked the hard questions to chef Richard Byerly from Villaggio, while he made a delicious meal for visitors to see. All the items used for the demo and cooking competition were locally sourced products. Chef Dean was also instrumental in making sure the stage, the cooking competition ingredients, and the sound system were in place, including a couple of sound and stage engineers from the casino.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

What was Your Favorite Dish at Taste of Ellicottville? By Chad Neal

The annual Taste of Ellicottville has come and gone reminding us that summer is on the downslope and to soak it in as much as we can before the weather turns. This year the Chamber of Commerce paid the weather bill and it was enjoyed by all. The vast array of small portioned deliciousness made many mouths water. The judges

with their forks in hand made their decisions about the best dishes, alas it is really just a few people making those choices. The droves of rambling lovers of Ellicottville’s cuisine are the real judges and the tickets traded for the “tastes” are the votes. The judges do deserve the respect for they have to taste a lot of it. What was your favorite dish at the Taste of Ellicottville?

Kent J. - Balloons’ Cameron W. - West Rose’s Melissa N. - Goat Cheese Brisket and Hummus. Brisket Tacos! Brushetta!!! Hands down!! (Winery of Ellicottville)
