The live bands that come through Ellicottville are always entertaining; some more than others, but all in all expectations are high for live entertainment in this town. This past Summer Music Festival Weekend brought out a small energetic band from the area, the Dandy Lionz, two-piece band that uses several instruments and backing tracks for its wide range songs. The two members are Alex Coustenis and Chris Golley both 39 years old. Coustenis was in a few bands previously including Mudflap, which was a heavy rock See “LIONZ” Page 8

Summertime in Ellicottville can be blissfully predictable: beautiful scenery, (usually) nice weather, fun people, great food, and in general, a whole lot of fun. I’ll take this kind of routine any day, by golly! There are always unusual things to do in our little neck of the woods. Next weekend, we glide in the Jazz and Blues Festival weekend, July 26-28 where the music will be found all over the village to include a couple shows out on The Winery

Rentals Begin At Holiday Valley On July 19th At Sky High Adventure Park

Call/Text Tina J. Dillon, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services 716-474-5646.

July 16, 2019, Ellicottville, NY…Holiday Valley has purchased 8 Rossignol electric assist, or e-bikes, and will begin renting them this Friday, July 19th at Sky High Adventure Park. An e-bike allows the rider to shift into 3 different power modes to assist with uphill climbing. Prices are $40 for

a 2-hour rental or $55 for a 3 hour rental, and $15 for each additional hour with helmets included in the rental price. Holiday Valley’s e-bike trail begins at the Sky High Adventure Park Harness Shop, and uses service roads and trails to go up through the resort, across the top and back down a ski slope.

Riders are given a map and an introduction to the operation of the bike. They can practice shifting and can get familiar with riding on a gentle grass covered slope near the Harness Shop. E-bike riders still have to pedal and the bikes allow them to choose the amount of power they need to zip up the hills and cruise over tough terrain in eco, trail or boost mode settings. Pedaling, like a regular bike, controls speed but it feels really powerful and the bike accelerates easily. That’s the reason everyone from newbie to hard-core riders end up with a big smile on their face when they try an e-bike. Bikes are available for rent from 9 am to 5 pm daily, with the last 2-hour rental going out at 3 pm.

Dennis Baldwin has been a bike enthusiast for many years. So much so, he even opened up his own bike shop here in Ellicottville and to give it an extra punch he decided to make burritos out of the location and dubbed the store Bike and Bean. Due to some changes in ownership of the first building that housed his business, Baldwin was told in January 2019 he would have to relocate. He found a building on Martha Street

setting up the Engineering Department. Until the Town receives a check, the Village will also not receive its share of the department costs. The Mayor said the Trustees might have to consider other ways to create revenue without raising taxes. The Board accepted the Planning Board report as submitted. Engineering Report Niles Pierson reported the work on the baseball field is “almost 100% complete.” There is just a fence in front of the dugouts to complete. The Mayor said many of us “had the pleasure” of attending the Sexual Harassment Prevention training at Town Center July 9th. He did not elaborate. The Engineer said the process of creating a separate water district is on “cruise control,” meaning it is going well. The work is expected to be completed by January 2020. At that point, new unified water rates will go into effect. The Board voted to accept the resignation of the water treatment plant supervisor, Tom Dineen. The Board went into executive session to discuss his replacement. When out of the session, the Board appointed Jess Klahn to replace him. Mr. Pierson reported he would be applying for a state EFC (Environmental Facilities Corporation) grant for various projects around the Village and Town. The State will pay up to 60% of a project’s cost up to $3 million. Pierson said he is looking for $5 million in projects to submit for the grant. The Town and Village would have to provide the remaining $2 million. He mentioned the Holi Huts by HoliMont that are currently on their own private wells. Pierson would like to get them on the Village’s water supply. Short Term Rental Law Town Planner Gary Palumbo went over the next steps in approving the amendments to the zoning law concerning short-term rentals. Mr. Palumbo said the amendment is a Type 1 Action for the SEQR (State Environmental Quality Review) meaning the Full Environmental across the bridge from EBC. When asked how he found it, he told The Villager that he happened to be riding his bike by the building (that used to house a few businesses in the past) and noticed it was for lease. He inquired and signed the lease at the end of March and he and his wife Shelley along with other friends and family got started on the build the first of April. To get the business back up and running in the new location (11 Martha Street) they had to get a “Special Use Permit” from the Village of Ellicottville and then they put several hours of work into it. Baldwin said he worked with the owner of the building and with the help

for an entire afternoon for thirty bucks or less? Simple! It’s a charity fundraiser for wounded veterans and their families. With tickets for their current world tour running from $29 to $185, and finding how, after Montgomery Gentry entertained troops at war overseas, traveling to Germany, Kuwait and Iraq and discovering the sacrifices made by those men and women in military service, it’s easy to see how this cause would be most dear to their hearts. So, it took a home-town hero, an Iraq Army veteran by the name of Major Patrick Miller, (now Lt. Col Miller, with 16 years’ active service), who, 5 years ago was near-fatally shot in the Fort Worth, Texas shooting of 2014 while getting people to shelter. Shot in the stomach, two inches below his heart, and thinking he was going to die he, nonetheless, guided people to safety, thinking it was a “crappy way to go” (quote from Stars and Stripes, Jan 25, 2015). He pressed on, even as he pressed a towel to his wound while moving people out of harm’s way. “A hero is someone who voluntarily walks into the unknown,” (quote by Tom Hanks). Miller did exactly that and lived to show his gratitude by giving back, after months of recovery and rehabilitation. Not one to rest on his laurels, Miller, the son of Dr. John Miller and the late Carole

Miller (one of his strongest supporters who is surely smiling down on her son from her new heavenly perch) went on to a full recovery, got married, did a three-year stretch in Hawaii, now serves at Fort Drum, and is daddy to a beautiful one-year-old daughter, Harper. He has run three marathons and, from conversing with him, one gets the feeling that his close brush with death has led him to wring every precious moment out of every day and experience, not only for himself and his family, but for others. Which brings the Allegany schools and Bonaventure graduate to the third annual benefit concert he has spearheaded to benefit veterans and their families through non-profits, Fisher House, and Homes for our Troops. In the first two years, the concert has hosted a total of more than 2700 attendees with about 1500 expected this year. They have met their donation goal every year and hope to exceed their net profits in 2019. Miller relies on his name recognition to speak to their higher angels in getting dignitaries like Tom Reed to attend the event. As Miller told this writer, he wants to raise awareness of the veteran’s plight with this day of music, friendship and fellowship. He encourages all the “Boot wearin’, God fearin’ Folks like us…” to come to Allegany for a day of fun.

involving more than 300,000 people. In his 180 pound (earth weight) Playtex (yes, like cross your heart bras) manufactured and designed suit, the temperature (between 180 degrees F in the sun and 160 degrees in shadow), did not affect Armstrong at all. Once Aldrin joined him, they took a walk, spoke by phone to President Nixon (who had a speech written in case the landing failed and the astronauts were marooned on the moon), planted reflectors and performed experiments, planted a flag which they subsequently knocked over at takeoff, making it the only flag from space missions not still standing on the moon, and the two unveiled a plaque. They read the inscription: “Here men from planet earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” Left behind were flags of the 50 states, U. S. territories, the United Nations and of each nation diplomatically recognized by the United States. The crew left medals in memory of Astronauts Grissom, Chaffee and White who were to have been the crew of the first manned space flight in the Apollo program. They left a memorial for the two Russian cosmonauts who were killed, and various mementoes, including a piece of the Wright brothers’ airplane, and silicon “Memorial Disc” inscribed with goodwill messages from 73 nations worldwide.

The astronauts then reentered the LM (imagine 8 days and a million miles strapped into something that, inside, was the size of a large car!). Aldrin went in first followed by Armstrong and, at 1:09am, the hatch was secured. Armstrong had walked on the moon for 2 hours, 31 minutes and 37 seconds; Aldrin roughly 40 minutes less. They were hardly alone. This duo was joined by an estimated half-billion TV watchers in most of the earth’s nations. As Armstrong descended the ladder, he pulled, a “D” ring, which activated a black and white television camera, thereby sharing the sight of his lowering left foot across millions of TV tubes until his boot sole contacted the SURFACE OF THE MOON! My spouse remembers watching that event, as do I, and surely many who are reading this article. He mused, “I had to wonder what it might have been like if I were sitting on a rock at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, watching the Pilgrims arrive. No one was there to record the historic event, but on this day, we had Walter Cronkite giving us play-byplay as the entire civilized world watched, first-hand, this astounding, unbelievable event. Imagine what it took to lay the groundwork for this climactic event in money, effort, people (some underacclaimed women known as “human computers,”) time, and lives lost. Wow!”

vote was taken at the end of the meeting. The decision came after several months of discussion including a public hearing May. For a look at the Board’s discussion on its vote see below. Good News Mayor Burrell traditionally starts a Trustee meeting with good news, and he had some on Monday. He announced the State has passed an additional capital spending bill that will re-instate the extreme winter recovery aid to municipalities. For the Village, this will mean the receipt of $3,495.52 in funds to help repair the road damage from the winter snowstorms. The Mayor, Matt MacAndrew, Greg Cappelli and grant writer Diana Chihak traveled to Buffalo to make a presentation supporting the Downtown Redevelopment Initiative. Mr. Burrell said he felt the presentation went very well, and that each person in their group had a chance to speak. He noted Ms. Chihak “did a terrific job,” with her part of the presentation. Results from the meeting won’t be known until November. The Mayor said he attended a meeting with representatives from the Regional Trail System. The State wants to have a trail from Springville down towards Ellicottville and possibly meet up with the EVGV and Pat McGee trails. He mentioned there are discussions about bringing passenger rail transportation again into this area. The state tax cap could start impacting the Village budget fairly soon. The Town still has not received the reimbursement from the state grant for

Who was Your Favorite Teacher in High School? By Chad Neal

If you’re reading this you probably had a favorite teacher in your school. A place we couldn’t wait to escape, but look back at fondly in our memories. Our best friends usually generated from said schools and if you’re on Facebook you’re still in touch with some of them now, including the teachers you made

friends with during those institutionalized years. The mentors of our adolescent years that left impressions on us will never be forgotten. We all went through many educators, preceptors, coaches, gurus, pedagogues and schoolmarms, but there is one that always stuck out as the key to our adult paths. Who was your favorite teacher in high school?

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Our Christmas in July Fundraiser was such a success last year that we have decided to make this an annual event! Each year we will choose a different charity or program to benefit. This year, all proceeds will be going towards the Cattaraugus County Santa Sheriff Program.

Two county employees who saw the need of lowincome/needy residents in Cattaraugus County during the holiday season founded the Santa Sheriff Program in 2004. This program has helped nearly 100 families a year. Families are referred to the program by churches,

schools, service providers and individuals. This program provides these families with Christmas dinner and gifts for the whole family! Our Fundraiser will be helping July 21st Upstairs of Madigan’s at 1 pm. This event is of course fun for the whole family! We will have Free Snow Cones for Kids, basket raffles, 50/50, food, music and you can meet Santa in his off-season. We can’t wait to see everyone there! If you would like to donate to the program, or donate a basket, please contact Sam at info@evlevents.com or 716378-0086
