The 2019 EVL-4 & EVL-9 Trail Runs kick off from Holiday Valley Resort on Sunday, July 21st, once again sending runners deep into technical trail running territory. Starting and finishing at Holiday Valley’s Mountain Sports Center, runners from several surrounding states toe the line for one of the most demanding trail races in the region. The EVL-4 is a one-lap race that climbs the mountain and uses single track trails that hide no secrets of the tight-twisty trails we love so much featuring one water station. The EVL-9 is the granddaddy sending runners deep into singletrack heaven; state land trails and the amazingly wicked descent back

to the finish line sharing the same start & finish as the EVL-4 course. Three water stations (some selfserve) on the long course provide ample resources for the demands at hand. Rain or shine. Clear your calendar and get ready for one of the most challenging and wicked days of trail running action of the summer. Both courses feature everything from gravel access road starts up the mountain, tight technical single track trails that utilize resort and state land property and the infamous flow-trail downhill that traverses the mountain to the See “TRAIL” Page 6

Brewing has done this before, and is ready once again to welcome their friends to come on over, relax and drink responsibly. DJ Gilroy will be in the house providing the music, along with the stars of the event, those being beers representing over 20 breweries. A happening like this brings attention to the Olean area, according to Jarrad Childs, Social Media Director for Four Mile Brewing. And it puts the spotlight on the new breweries. “We’re inviting a lot of friends, a lot of new breweries coming up.

The owner of this rental property want to convert the unit to a Bed and Breakfast. Story & Photo By John Thomas; Staff Writer B&B The Village Planning Board on Tuesday night heard from an applicant planning to establish a new Bed and Breakfast in the Village. The Jefferson Street business will require a special use permit. At Tuesday’s meeting, Village Planner Gary Palumbo said the criteria for a B&B are met, and there are no

planned changes to the site plan or the property, therefore Site Plan and Architectural Design Review are not needed. The Board determined they had a complete application and moved to set a public hearing. The public hearing to consider the special use permit will be held at the next Planning Board meeting, August 13, at 5:30pm. Adams Street Fence Next, the Board completed its Architectural Design Review for a fence on Adams Street. The owners submitted a revision to the plan that was approved in 2018. They would like to create an 8’10” fence hanging from the pergola between their home and the garage. The fence exceeds the six-foot height limit and required an appeal to the Village Zoning Board of Appeals. The VZBA granted the variance but added a condition that the Planning Board must perform an architectural design review. The couple presented photographs of the yard and several sketches of the fence to the Board. Mr. Palumbo noted See “PLANNING” Page 7

Pest Prevention Tips

Electric Vehicles Are a Fun Alternative to Gas Cars

Best Ways to Control Unwanted Guests

Opinion By John Thomas; Staff Writer I’ve received a few nice comments on my electric car series of stories. Based on some of the comments and questions I’ve received, I thought I’d give a driver’s view of what it’s like to own a battery-powered vehicle. The first test drive I took in a Chevy Bolt I was hooked. “This makes so much sense!” I thought when I had driven no more than a few feet away from the dealership. Feeling the smooth acceleration and hearing almost nothing I felt this is the way all cars should be.

If you watch any amount of television at all, you’ll recognize the guy dressed in white shirt, white hard-hat and tie parked in front of a house, clipboard in hand. He leaps over fences, crawls under foundations and faces the invading enemy head on. It turns out that you don’t have to turn to the yellow pages to find these guys. We have our own fearless exterminators, Southern Tier Pest Control, in Randolph. When all the following tips don’t work out for you, it will be time to make that call. Meanwhile, if you have unwelcome visitors in you home, you outbuildings, your boats or your docks, look at your habits and make sure you aren’t inviting them. Move Closer to Finding Your Dream Home

As my farmer friend always says: “You gotta make hay when the sun shines”! And if you’re lucky enough to live in

this beautiful corner of New York State, truer words were never said. Walking around Ellicottville, one can see an explosion of work and activities associated with the season. Our little village is just coming into its “summer mode” – beautiful flowers, clean streets and squeakyclean storefronts abound – all designed to enhance our lovely ambience. Homeowners also need to get cracking - mowing the grass, sweeping the porch, and tending the garden are just a few of the routine things that need attention. It may be hard work, but couldn’t we just

Summer Music Fest. Wrap Up Notes from the Desk of Deputy Officer in Charge

The Ray Evans Seneca Theater is truly a historical treasure to Salamanca, NY and the surrounding area. Originally constructed in 1945 and thoughtfully renovated by members of the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association in the 1980’s, the theater has been a staple of Main Street for over half a century. Be sure to check out the live musicals, theatre

productions, and other events as well! Ray Evans was one of Salamanca’s most beloved residents, having graduated as valedictorian of his class at Salamanca High School. He was an American songwriter, known for “Silver Bells”, “Mona Lisa” and themes for the movie “The Lemon Drop Kid”. Here is the schedule: July 2: Ant Man & The Wasp, July 9: The Incredibles 2, July 16: Aquaman, July 23: Black Panther, July 30: Spederman into the Spider-Verse, August 6: Lego Movie the Second Part, August 13: How to Drain Your Dragon Hidden World and August 20: Avengers Infinity War For more info on this event please visit salamancachamber. org/movies-1

a few conversations with CCB management. The decision to stay in banking by joining CCB was easy once I confirmed their plan to remain an independent community bank with true local authority to assist customers. As a business lender, this is one of the more important aspects of what I do. CCB also serves the same communities I’ve lived in and worked all my life. I’m reconnecting with people I haven’t seen in many years. It’s fun.” His inclusion on CCB’s team will facilitate independent, community bank growth of CCB in many of the areas it serves. Jim and his wife Maura make their home in Lakewood, NY. “We’re really glad Jim’s part of the CCB Team now,” Mike Wimer, CCB President & CEO comments. “He very naturally develops the trust & confidence of clients and grows long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships. He’s a Team player who, quite frankly, is a community banker at heart!”

action in the face of their fears and anxiety. Finally, there is a blend that is helpful for people who try to dispel their anxiety through addiction or compulsive, reckless behavior. It helps a person get in touch with the cause of their fears and anxiety and do something about it, rather than doing things to try to avoid or deny them. Essential oils can also be used to calm the nerves and reduce anxiety. They can be diffused into the air, make into a hydrosol or simply inhaled. I personally like the blends that help to get grounded, centered and calm and include oils like Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, Orange, Ylang-Ylang, Atlas Cedar, Blue Tansy. You can also look for an herbal supplement that is designed to help ease feelings of anxiety, which the principle ingredient is Zembrin*, an extract from the South African plant Sceletium tortuosum, also known as kanna. It also contains nutrients that can help calm anxious feelings and stress. Kanna is a small ground cover plant that was used by natives as a remedy to ease physical stress, thirst and hunger. It was also used to ease pain and enhance mood. Clinical research suggests that this extract of kanna can be helpful for anxiety and mild to moderate depression, by reducing stress and elevating mood. This combination also contains a unique amino acid that has been shown to increase the brain’s alpha waves, which encourage a calm and relaxed state without drowsiness. It also contains thiamin, a B-vitamin that enhances GABA, a key neurotransmitter for calming the brain. The minerals magnesium and zinc are also foun din this

global temperatures have been above average in NOAA’s database. Since 2015, 49 of the last 53 months have at least tied a top five warmest months. This may be a lot of data, but perhaps this information gives credence to the fact (per Cheng and authors) that recently this old world “has experienced more major tropical storms (hurricanes/typhoons), many of which developed quickly and caused considerable destruction and deaths.” Granted, “hurricanes and other storms are natural phenomena and they are affected by many other factors besides ocean changes, but conditions allowing for the formation of severe hurricanes are occurring more often because of the record high OHC, with increases in intensity, lifetime, size, and especially increases in heavy rainfall.” The authors of the article go on to warn that there are also other indirect effects of ocean heating such as increased drought intensity, heatwaves, and risk of wildfire. To put this all into perspective, we did have other warming periods in earth’s history. The Eocene, (between 53 and 49 million years ago), was the Earth’s warmest temperature period for 100 million years which then flipped and became an icehouse by the late Eocene. In our current era, per the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the highest temperature ever recorded was 134.1°F (56.7°C) on July 10, 1913 in (aptly named) Furnace Creek (Greenland Ranch), California, US. Sooo, how do we manage

in this hot-hotter-hottest weather? Naturally, stay away from alcohol, sugary drinks and caffeine, but do stay mega-hydrated. Here’s what AccuWeather.com suggests. Drink electrolyteladen drinks. Avoid oven cooking and dishwasher use. Change incandescent bulbs to fluorescent or LED. Turn off all electronics you are not using. Keep drapes and windows shut during the sunny parts of the day. Prop bottles of frozen ice water (it melts slower) at an angle in front of a fan if you have it oscillating clockwise. However, the best way to remove heat is to open an opposing window and run the fan counter-clockwise to draw the hot air out. Make an aloe-vera/peppermint spray to spray all over yourself when you start heating up. Put ice in a towel and wrap it around your neck. Here’s my favorite: Find a shaded patch of grass and walk in it, barefoot. Close your eyes. Feel the coolness of the earth. It’s almost spiritual. Most important: Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion: fainting, fatigue, headache, muscle/abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pale skin, profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat. Interestingly, the National Weather Service forecast for our area from September ’19May ’20 shows only a 19%26% chance for temps to be below normal, 31%-34% normal temps, and 38%-50% above normal temps with the highest (Oct-Nov-Dec) at 50% above normal. an application for a new deck and driveway for a home on Rockwell. The deck requires a variance from the VZBA because it extends too close to a property line. The Board of Appeals has not yet ruled on the appeal, so the Board could not take action on the application. Currently, the property has a prohibited parking area at the front of the home. The owner has changed their application

and is no longer applying for the front parking and second driveway. Rather they are adding a parking spot as part of the existing driveway. Because the deck and driveway are parts of a single application, the Board is unable to take action until the VZBA rules on the variance for the deck. The Board scheduled a public hearing for the August 13 meeting. The meeting was adjourned.

of its electricity from coal; the most significant percentage of the state’s power comes from natural gas, but at least burning natural gas emits less CO2 than coal. The rest of the state’s electricity comes from a mix of hydroelectric and renewables. So, for at least we New York residents, buying an EV can sharply reduce your carbon footprint. Okay, enough of that, driving an EV is just fun. A certain relative of mine (who shall remain unidentified) and I got into a heated discussion, several years ago, about the merits of electric cars. Said relative sighted cost, range, and lack of charging infrastructure as to why EVs were impactable. That was then; this is now. When said family member got behind the wheel of my Bolt, the first thing he/she said was, “This is fun!” We commented on the smooth whisper quiet acceleration and that we could hear our conversation over the motor. Said relative admitted to being impressed. About that acceleration:

it’s one of the more startling aspects of the car. When I made my trip down to Mill Run PA to see the famous Falling Water house, I had my first opportunity to pass a vehicle on a two-lane road. “Here goes,” I thought and punched the accelerator. The car almost leapt out of my hands. I steered into the oncoming lane. I flashed past the car. Then went back to my lane. I was passed the car almost before I realized it. “Whoa! That was cool!” I thought. With an EV car, the torque is transferred directly from the motor through the single gear transmission directly to the wheels: no lag, no downshifting, no sudden lurching, just power. The Bolt is so vibration-free that driving down a smooth stretch of road feels like the car is gliding. So, now, if you’ll forgive me, I’ll admit to a bit of EV snobbery. Several times when I’ve been traveling smoothly down the freeway, I’ve looked around at the other cars and thought, “Look at all those gasguzzling dinosaurs!”

from your house as possible. Fix household leaks and clean up any excess moisture on counters or sinks right away. Cockroaches like water and can swim. Don’t leave pet food out overnight. Fix any screens that have holes to prevent pests from entering. Check for any openings or cracks where pests may enter your house, such as behind sinks, along baseboards, and around windows. Seal them. If carpenter ants are a problem, look for damaged or wet wood and replace it. Vacuum carpets and cracks and crevices regularly. Check the foundation of your home for openings larger than one-quarter of an inch and seal them. If you’ve already tried prevention techniques and you

still have a pest problem, you may need to use pesticide to treat the area. But first, be sure that you know what kind of pest you’re trying to eliminate. Your local extension service or an exterminator may be able to help you with identification. The next step is to choose a pesticide that will work against the specific kind of pest you have. But, here’s the hitch in the giddyap. You MUST be sure no child or animal can get near the treatment; you must protect yourself while using the product with long sleeves, pants, gloves; you must never mix your own product. Before applying pesticide, remove children, pets, See PESTS page 8

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Beat on the Street: What Do You Want to Ask Me By Chad Neal I have been asking questions for almost a decade to share others’ views on certain subjects. Many times the answers I receive are humorous, and are unusable in the forum I have in The Villager and in this particular commentary, but most answers are great and the space is limited to print them. I come up with the questions and post them on my Facebook page and the response I get is usually great. Sometimes I

struggle to come up with a question or I think of one in the shower or right before I fall asleep and tragically forget it as I go to post it. A lot of times I have answers to my own questions and a few times I have used an alter ego/ pseudonym to answer especially if the amount of answers I got were insufficient. This week I decided I want to (and for lack of a worldlier question) find out what others wanted to ask me. What do you want to ask me?

Melissa N. - How do you deal with something that bothers you… without saying something to anyone?

Ed M. - What are your views on the persuasive acts of the media Brandon W. - Who is the one person that makes Jeremy R. - What is being for the left or the you cringe when they your favorite memory of right? And how do we neutralize this? Ellicottville? walk in the bar?

CAREERS IN COMPASSION

By Carol Fisher, Wendy Wick, lifetime resident of Cattaraugus County, died of a short term illness at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo on Saturday, June 29th. She was 58 years old. The 1977 graduate of Ellicottville Central High School leaves behind 2 daughters, Cassandra Felt and Katlynn Felt, a son, Anthony (Denise) Wick, and two beloved grandchildren, Anime Felt and Luna Wick. She is also survived by two sisters, Cindy (Frank) Moore of Ellicottville and Patricia (David) Skinner of Salamanca, and three brothers, Bill (Rose) Wick of Salamanca, Dan (Judy) Wick in Florida and Matt Wick in New Albion. Her one sister, Judy Wick and one brother Tim Wick, predecease her. Wendy was the daughter of long-time residents and members of the Ellicottville American Legion, William and Anna Mae Wick, whom also

If you buy more than you need for the smallest possible area, do NOT throw the rest of it down the drain or into the trash. It is your responsibility to dispose of it correctly and safely. Frankly, if the situation is annoying enough for action, the smartest move is to call your local exterminator.

predecease her. She will always be the beloved aunt of Jessica Schultz of Great Valley, who is a member of The Villager newspaper team, Rob Moore of Cheektowaga, Kimberly Wick (California) and others. Sharing a large family that stretches from Ellicottville to Salamanca, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, Great Valley and Buffalo, Wendy leaves behind a large family of loved ones. Although not an official member of any organized church, Wendy was a person of quiet faith, sharing her beliefs on her Facebook page. Aware she was near the end of her life, she signed her own DNR order, knowing that when she left this earth, she was “going to be at peace” and that it was like going home. This lady of modest means leaves behind happy memories of great meals that she loved to cook, a collection of cookbooks and owls, and memories of her quick sense of humor. Jessica

and Casey advised me “She always loved listening to music and watching NCIS or CSI. Her favorite Disney movie was Cinderella. She loved Holiday gatherings where we all came together and had dinner and played games.” If she misses anything in her new heavenly home, it will be the time she spent playing with her beloved grandchildren and spending time with her surviving family. Presently, her family is running a GoFundMe page to help defray any leftover costs for her care, her final expenses, and her Celebration of Life, which will be held at “her favorite place on earth” – Allegany State Park, the tentative date being August 3rd. Any donations are appreciated and accepted, so please consider going and donating to help Wendy’s family say their goodbyes and lay her earthly remains to rest. https:// www.gofundme.com/manage/ memorial-expenses-needed

Southern Tier Professional Pest Control Inc., is locally owned and operated out of Randolph, NY. The company, started in 1999 by Kim Milford, is now fully owned and operated by Kim’s son, Nathan, and his wife, Jeri. They provide general pest control services in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming, Allegany and parts of Erie County in NY and Northern PA. They also can provide nuisance control in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties. Nate, a US Navy veteran, says that they will live trap and relocate when it is feasible and landowner permission is granted, but each situation calls for its

own remedy. Both Jeri and Nate are fully committed to using as few toxins as possible, demonstrated by using only chemical-free cleaning agents in the home they share with their two little ones, Maverick and Lily. Jeri says this about the use of organic products in their business: “Our goals, in the near future, are to provide a natural and effective alternative to traditional pesticides, as well as looking into expanding for tick and mosquito control.” Be safe and give them a call at 3582207, InsectGone.com.
