By Jenean Roth John Kent’s enthusiasm and pride is uncontainable when he talks about The Ellicottville Championship Rodeo. Over thirty years ago he, “started by plowing the field and putting seats around it. Today, it’s one of the largest International Professional Rodeo Association sanctioned rodeo in the Northeast.”

Over 10,000 people will enjoy the Rodeo this year, and “enjoy” is an understatement. It’s an absolutely incredible time for the whole family. The Wild West comes to Ellicottville July 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th. Four days of nonstop rodeo action. 550 cowboys from See “RODEO” Page 6

Victor Wainwright was recently nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. He will play at Balloons Monday, July 1 at 7pm.

By, Jack Smeltz

I first met Victor Wainwright about six years ago when he was performing for the second time at Balloons. His band back then was called the Wildroots and Victor was a much heavier man but the instrument he played that night was the best piano I’ve ever heard.

Since then Victor has attempted snowboarding at The Valley, played through a black out in E’ville, had an encounter with a four-poster wicker bed (can’t tell you any more) and drove through the snowmageddon of 2014, but his love for our town keeps him coming back. Victor’s musical odyssey began in Savannah Georgia as a toddler sitting next to his grandfather at the piano listening to him play. Both Victor’s grandpa and dad were musicians and taught him to play the piano. He says they told him it wasn’t the music you played but how you played it that mattered. His dad and grandpa listened to and played songs by Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Reeves and Jimmy Reed: Honky Tonk, the blues and real rock-n-roll, which Victor has incorporated into his style and live show. Victor’s path has had some detours. His family wanted him to go to college and have some, safety net kind of profession and fresh out of college he was hired as an air See “PIANO” Page 7

This week I want to take a time out from crime talk and mention a very special young student. This week I want to talk about Lillian Shanley from East Otto. Lillian is a senior at West Valley Central and attends the Criminal Justice Program here at the Ellicottville Boces Center.

Gowanda Harley Davidson decided that the time was right in 2018 to open a Harley boutique in the Village.

If you read any of my stories on the development of electric vehicles (EVs) then you know I mentioned I have purchased an EV myself. And now the big reveal. I bought a Chevy Bolt. After reading the mostly glowing

Evening. His career has produced hit songs, such as “Show Me The Way,” “Baby, I Love Your Way,” “Do You Feel Like We Do,” and several others, along with iconic innovations as one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. Frampton announced earlier this year that he will retire from touring at the end of this year, giving fans one last chance to see this master at work. To make the

evening even more special, Frampton will welcome special guest Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening for the Seneca Allegany show. This will be an outdoor show taking place on Saturday, June 29th from 7 pm till 9 pm and a celebration of great Rock music that cannot be missed! What is the Festival: Once each month from April through September you can stroll around our outdoor family and leashed pet friendly event that has several artisan vendors selling unique hand made products as well as a few market place vendors with home made goods. Such as jewelry, baked goods, clothing and apparel. After you have visited all the artisans outside, take time to visit Granny’s Boot Antiques home of Grevpode Gallery in the barn. There you can browse through the main floor, then climb the stairs to the loft and look out the window to see the festival or look towards the main area or perhaps a rest on the deck of the barn. Then enjoy a walk through the art maze on your way to the lower level, which features a wide range of products from days gone by. Each event boasts free live music and our dedicated food vendor MooCheesy (Who specializes in grilled cheese and hamburgers). During some festivals there are wagon rides. Some of our vendors are the same each month such as Grandma Butter, who whips up tasty creations for our patrons to sample and CJ’s Sweet Surprises, who bring

bread and sweets at low prices for all to enjoy. One booth each show is given free of charge to a nonprofit/charitable group to provide an opportunity to raise money and inform the public about their organization. This year from July to September we will be hosting a basket raffle fund raiser for Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Six times a year TMEM Festivals produces a festival to promote the local unique artisans of Erie, Catt, Wyoming and Chautauqua counties. Interested vendors are invited to participate in these invitation only festivals, please contact us. There is an area for dedicated accessible parking; larger vehicles and if you just want to sit and relax you can do that as well. These events are brought to you by Twin Maples Entertainment Management (TMEM) festivals are produced by a team of dedicated volunteers that work to bring the highest quality vendors to these events. For further information please contact Deb Wilson at www.tmemfestivals.com or call 1-877-211-0735, tmem@ vaxxine.com and don’t forget to check out our Facebook, FB: CountryGatherings.

In Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, gardens represent transition to a new space as Alice tumbles into one via a rabbit hole and finds more throughout her adventures. In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, it is seeing a well cared for garden that convinces Elizabeth to marry the gardener, Mr. Darcy. And in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, flowers cast a spell of love. It all seems so magical, doesn’t it? Plants have always had an important place is humans’ lives. One can even find evidence of their importance in references to the twentyfive-thousand-year-old cave paintings in The UNESCO World Heritage Site at the Serra da Capivara National Park in northeast Brazil. There, in a painting of human and animal figures, is what is likely the oldest man-made depiction of a tree held by two human figures. In another painting, the tree is surrounded by a bigger group of human figures that are all reaching towards the tree and appear to be worshipping it! at your face on a motorcycle is the way a lot of folks come here. For years, motorcycles of every kind have lined the streets in the summer time with riders enjoying Ellicottville’s splendors, so it was logical for a shop to open up that caters to the biker set. Gowanda Harley Davidson decided to do just that and opened a seasonal store in Ellicottville last summer. They don’t sell their popular two wheeled machines at

beings were already intuiting that plants, as well as the animals mostly portrayed in the caves, were valued. Flowers have been an important subject for artists throughout history. In Ancient Egypt, the lotus, symbolizing the sun, was used in papyrus paintings. In many artistic works of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, floral patterns were prominent. Later we encounter Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Monet’s water lilies and O’Keefe’s oversized poppies. So, what’s the big appeal of flowers and gardens? Current literature points to the news that “gardening reduces stress and combats high blood pressure as well as improving overall physical fitness.” The American Horticultural Therapy Association formally contends that “quality of life is related to the relationship between people and plants.” Planting a garden can be a great way to relieve stress. If you have no more than several window sills for a pot garden, or a small patio or larger piece of land, the act of making your little corner of the world into a sanctuary will bring a smile to your face and drop your tensed-up shoulders back to where they belong. And, gardening brings with it the benefits of Vitamin D, not to mention the uplifting fresh air that comes as part of the package. Some gardeners cannot bear to play in the dirt without the Ellicottville site, but they can show you how to get one, rather this shop is for accessories and Harley gear. Additionally, every Sunday in July Gowanda Harley Davidson (GHD) has Sunday Rides where they ride from GHD to the retail store in Ellicottville. On their website gowandaharley. com it says “Kickstands up at 10:30” and they venture through the winding roads of Cattaraugus County to enjoy the relaxation Ellicottville has to offer on Sundays. The Harley Davidson retail shop in Ellicottville is located in the former Kabobs building adjacent

popular and influential rock groups of our time. The band’s record-setting compilation Their Greatest Hits (19711975) sold over 29 million copies in the U.S. alone and was awarded by the RIAA the top-selling album of the 20th Century. Currently Don and the Eagles have sold more than 83.5 million albums. A member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, Felder served as a member of The Eagles for 27 years, putting his mark on numerous Eagles milestones. Felder originated the music and cowrote The Eagle’s biggest hit – the iconic, Grammy-studded smash “Hotel California” – along with fan favorites like “Victim of Love” and “Those Shoes”. He became immediately celebrated for his lyrical, signature guitar work on legendary songs like “Hotel California,” “One of

These Nights,” “New Kid In Town,” and numerous more. “Hotel California” was recently voted the Number 1 best 12-string guitar song in the world by Guitar World magazine. Sunday, July 7th: The Buffalo Philharmonic will be back for their 26th engagement at the Summer Music Festival on Sunday night. An exciting list of musical greatness is in the works. The evening will conclude with everyone’s favorite 1812 Overture and Stars and Stripes forever to an incredible fireworks display. culminating this year with a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Victor’s response to the Grammy nomination was: “I always wondered what it would be like to win the lottery, now I think I know”. Victor has appeared at Balloons with Southern Hospitality, a blues super group made up of Damon Fowler and Jp Soars, both of whom have appeared here with their own bands. The Wildroots which included Nick Black (lead guitar and vocals) who also played here with his own band and will be back this fall, Terrence Grayson (bass & vocals), Billy Dean (drums) and The Train consisting of, Dean and Grayson and Buffalo’s own Pat Harrington (lead guitar and vocals) who’s appeared here with Buffalo’s own Robert (Freightrain) Parker, Grace Lougan and Owen Eichensehr to name a few.

One of the highlights, I’m sure, will be the addition of The Train’s horn section made up of Doug Woolverton on trumpet and Mark Earley on saxophone. To see a Victor Wainwright show is unique in that his style is hard to pinpoint. There’s all the early influences of country to blues to Yip Harburg who wrote Somewhere Over The Rainbow, which Victor occasionally performs. The Train not only accompanies Victor’s every nuance but they challenge him to stretch the envelope. He occasionally strolls out into the audience, sans microphone, to highlight his booming voice and Victor likes to joke and have fun and keep the energy at a high level. Come on out to Balloons this Monday, July 1, show starts at 7pm, for a musical experience you’ll never forget. Tickets are $20, available on line at Eventbrite or on F/B at the Balloons Page or at Balloons.

into its home charger. The day I went, I had a maximum range of 254 miles. I had identified two places where I planned to recharge on my way down and back. They were DuBois and Jannette, PA. Both are level three high powered charge stations that can give an EV 90 miles worth of range in 30 minutes. An hour charge at each should do it. The two charging sessions on the way down went pretty well, and I had plenty of power to go back and forth between my hotel and Fallingwater. Heading back home Sunday should be easy peasy. Not so fast there, pioneer. At DuBois, the last charge station on my way home, I got the charger activated and checked it after about 20 minutes. It wasn’t charging. I called the support number and worked with the guy for about a half hour to no avail. Although the support guy apologized profusely, I wasn’t going to get any more charge out of that station. Now what? I knew it was about 100 miles to my home, and the car was reporting a range of 125 miles. That was cutting it close. The problem was it was mostly uphill the entire way. With the same awful feeling you get watching the gas gauge sink towards empty, I watched the power slowly drain out of the batteries. Just outside Limestone, the charge indicator turned to the dreaded orange display of death. The car reported 20 more miles of range, but I’ve

heard from other Bolt divers pushing the car too far past the orange display of death too many times can damage the batteries, and I didn’t want to start now. Then, I remembered there is a free charger behind city hall in Salamanca. But where is city hall? By the time I found it, there was a “Charge Vehicle Soon” message flashing on the dashboard. By this time, my nerves were completely frayed. I finally found the charger, got the car plugged in, and heaved a sigh of relief. I sat there for an hour munching on a hamburger (Okay, while looking for city hall, I stopped at Burger King; I needed energy too.) The charger there is a slower level two charger, that, in an hour, gave me just enough juice to get home. You might think the experience has turned me off to EVs. Not really, but it seems the transition to EVs will suffer from the classic chicken-egg conundrum. If there aren’t enough EV charging stations, people will be reluctant to buy an allelectric vehicle. But, if there aren’t enough electric vehicles on the road, companies won’t build charging stations. When I got home, I tallied up the bills from the charging stops. My 500 plus mile road trip had cost me just under $30 in power. Not bad. So now, I find myself thinking about my next road trip – to my brother’s place in Maine. I’ll let you know how that goes.

you can visit their website, gowandaharley.com or their Facebook page gowandaHD. Last year the shop had some museum bikes on display and this year you can go and see what other cool things they have and hear their many tales of the road. Gowanda Harley Davidson is a family owned

store for over 60 years and has grown to an over 30,000 square foot, fully serviceable dealership. The sound of the thunderous bikes every weekend is a true sign of summer, and the EVL Harley Davidson retail store is only open for the summer and part of the autumn season. Ride safe!

Free Fishing Weekend For NYS Hosted by the NYS Dept. Of Environmental Conservation, June 29th & 30th

The NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation is hosting a FREE fishing weekend on June 29-30th! There’s no fishing license required on those days for the fresh or marine waters of New York State, making it the opportune time for people of all ages to learn and enjoy the day. We especially encourage those with more experience to bring along the young people in your

life to show them the value of patience, the anticipation of the bite and the exhilaration of the catch! Places to fish in the Enchanted Mountains include Red House and Quaker Lakes in Allegany State Park, Case Lake, Harwood Lake, New Albion Lake, and Lime Lake! Stream and creek fishing are found in the Cattaraugus, Clear, Ischua and Mansfield Creeks. Read more

Beat on the Street: What is Your Hidden Talent? By Chad Neal Being able to do something better than a lot of others is nice. It can make you stand out and possibly gain you popularity and wealth. A hidden talent though doesn’t cause this sort of notoriety too often. Sometimes the talent is hidden from others on purpose, either mundane or embarrassing or the talent is hidden from self and found

later in life. Sometimes people don’t even realize the talent they have is special. Sometimes we know we have it in us, but circumstances keep us from making it happen. Having a hidden talent can be prosperous in many situations as well, and using it to help others or a team can make that talent even more special. What is your hidden talent?

National Social Media Day : June 30th, 2019 : Ellicottville

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!
