Midway State Park’s New Tradition 1st Annual Fall Festival this Saturday, October 19

By Carol Fisher Photo/Lee Stein Brandi McAvoy is one of those fortunate souls who got a gift that kept on giving. Several years ago she received a lovely cobalt pendant, which she adored. The cobalt glass reminded her of the many water-smoothed lakeglass shards she had seen on her walks along the shoreline of Lake Erie. With over 800+ miles of shoreline, Lake Erie is the fourth largest (surface area)

of the Great Lakes, yet shallowest and thereby warmest of the five, and eleventh largest lake in the world. It provides lots of nooks and crannies to find hidden treasures. Deciding that she could likely make more like her piece with a little talent, U-Tube tutoring and the right tools, she set about collecting wave-deposited glass, ceramic, pottery, stones, and wood to use in her artistic efforts. Peek at the Peak Fall Colors of the Southern Tier ... Pg. 10 Drive along any roads in the county we are treated with the annual spectacle of our luscious fall colors. The sugar maple, which displays the brilliant red, orange and gold coloring, is NYS’ state tree. The white pine and white spruce add the dark threads of color running through the rich, bright tapestry that covers our hillsides. It may be difficult to imagine, but the bright fall colors we witness in the fall are actually always in the leaves, dominated by the green from the chlorophyll, which the trees work hard to produce in summer.

Andy Cohen & Sean Rowe

Rolling Hills Radio Presents Artists Live At Shawbucks, October 28th

Rolling Hills Radio will present singer-songwriter Sean Rowe and blues artist, Andy Cohen for Episode 91. Over the course of his career, blues influenced singer-songwriter Sean Rowe has recorded five fulllength albums and several EPs. His music has been used widely throughout film and television, with notable examples including NBC’s hit dramas The Blacklist and Parenthood. Rowe’s song “To Leave Something Behind” was one of two nonscore tracks to be featured in Ben Affleck’s hit 2016 feature film, The Accountant. The song accompanied the film’s final scene and has since received nearly 4.5 million streams on Spotify alone. He tours nearly nonstop and later this year, he’ll return to Europe for two weeks with stops in the U.K., Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Germany. Rolling Hills producer, Cathie Hardley says, “The first time I heard Sean Rowe’s rumbling baritone, I stopped dead in my tracks. I listened and didn’t stop listening. When I heard what his songs conveyed, I went from interested to transfixed.” Andy Cohen grew up in a house with a piano and a lot of Dixieland Jazz records, amplified after a while by

a cornet that his dad got him. At about fifteen, he got bitten by the Folk Music bug, and soon got to hear records by Big Bill Broonzy and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, both of which reminded him of the music he grew up to. At 16, he saw Reverend Gary Davis and his course was set. He knew he had it in him to follow, study, perform and promote the music of the southeast quadrant, America’s great musical fountainhead. Although he’s done other things, a certain amount of writing and physical labor from dishwashing and railroading to archeology, playing the old tunes is what he does best. “Blues and folk are vitally important elements in American music.” Host Ken Hardley reminds us “… we’ve had lots of players on Rolling Hills who have personified the roots of the blues as well as folk. People like Pink Anderson, Mississippi John Hurt, and Leadbelly have been represented. Tom Paxton, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, and Roy Bookbinder have actually been on our stage. These are great examples of Andy’s influences and his guitar skills take it all to new level. We were lucky we nabbed him in the midst of his exhausting tour

schedule.” All live RHR regular season shows take place at Shawbucks, across from Jamestown’s Ice Arena. Doors open — to all those holding or purchasing tickets — at 5:30pm for the “Rolling Happy Hour.” Food and drink are available until 6:15 at which time audience members take their seats and the house lights dim. Audio and video recording begins promptly at 6:30. The bar reopens for 10 minutes at intermission and then again after the show when the audience and performers are invited to a “Meet and Greet.” There are three options for purchasing tickets; Until the show is sold out, tickets are available at the door the night of each show. If you choose, you can call the Rolling Ticket Hotline at (716) 294-0416. Tickets are also available online at rollinghillsradio.org/tickets. Tickets for the September show are $15.00. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by TriCounty Arts Council.

Harry Bisgeier, owner of the Jamestown Falcons, was called to war duty prior to the 1943 season. Before he left, he arranged for the St. Louis Cardinals to operate the team in his absence. While three-quarters of all minorleague ball teams closed, the Falcons and the PONY League marched on. Fiery Georgian Jack Sanford managed the “Flock” to a fourth place finish in the 6-team league. Lack of pitching led to the 54-56 record. “I haven’t a chucker who isn’t liable to throw the ball clear over the

grandstand…” complained Sanford. A bright spot for Manager Sanford and the nearly 68,000 Jamestown rooters who cheered for their team was the play of Ernie Hrovatic. Nicknamed “Solid Folks”, Hrovatic had a sensational ’43 season hitting .336 and leading the PONY League in doubles, triples, RBIs and total bases. He received a promotion to the Pacific Coast League for 1944, but Uncle Sam intervened. After basic training, Ernie visited Jamestown during his last furlough before reporting

He says that his passion, along with music, is to focus on his ‘functional age’ instead of his chronological age. Noting that the number of Americans over the age of 65 will double in the next 30 years, Mc Entire says that he became interested in what the process of aging can do to our bodies as we age and if that process can be slowed down, stopped, or even reversed. “I realize I have lost some mobility and strength, as I have aged, but have

also gained muscle mass and aerobic capabilities, I never had, even as a child.” says McEntire. “I want to help others, no matter what condition they find themselves, to improve. We can have better fitness as we age, the more we understand it and perform certain activities safely and wisely.” In addition to sharing some of his thoughts on how seniors can stay fit and active, McEntire will also be conducting a ‘Senior Fitness Test’ that will help participants compare their fitness levels to the average American. Each residency lasts for 10 weeks in each school, with teaching artists visiting once a week. Bowling For Breast Cancer At Jamestown Bowling Company, October 27th

words “you have cancer” can never be taken back, can never be given a different meaning and can never give you the opportunity to understand why this happened to you. It’s about moving forward, continuing with life, making the most of it and surrounding yourself with people you love, that love you and who can help you get through it with the determination and strength we all have in us. We all want stories to have a happy ending, and while most do, there are some that come to a sad end. Framed in Pink, is a platform for those to come together, raise funds to help support cancer care locally, and with the determination and dedication from the committee, it has been an astonishing accomplishment. The defining moments are not the moments that define us, but rather moments that transform us. Please join Sue and her committee Sunday, October 27th for Framed in Pink Bowling Over Breast Cancer at The Jamestown Bowling Company, 850 Foote Avenue, Jamestown NY. The cost is $15, 9 pin no tap. Registration begins at noon. All proceeds benefit Framed in Pink’s endowment fund at WCA Foundation, supporting cancer care at UPMC Chautauqua. Please contact Sue Lamb for more information at 716.708.6500 or visit wcafoundationjamestown. org.

It Would Be A Crime To Miss At the Lakewood Library, October 29th, 9:30am Thanks to a recent generous donation of 985 books that included hundreds of paperback murder mysteries, Lakewood Memorial Library is hosting a one-day only, murder mystery book sale on Tuesday, October 29 from 9:30am until 5pm. Avril Moore, the donor, is a former seasonal resident of Chautauqua. Her book collection – which has a strong British accent! -- includes dozens of authors beloved by generations of mystery

fans, such as Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, M.C. Beaton, G.K. Chesterton, Ellis Peters, Martha Grimes, Josephine Tey, Michael Innes, Ngaio Marsh, Ruth Rendell, and many many more. In addition to the more famous names, there are dozens more authors who were best sellers in the early to mid-20th century but whose books are now out-ofprint or hard to find. After the last marathoner finished the race there was a special treat this year as a wedding was held under the Finish Line. Randolph resident, Michael Carpenter was united in marriage to Susan Corbett, formerly of Dunkirk, NY. The couple ran the 2018 inaugural 10K event and as they pulled in next to each other in the parking lot recognized each other as floor mates 20 years ago at Buffalo State. As they lined up at the starting line together, and basically ran the same pace, they had reconnected and a relationship soon developed. As wedding plans started to take shape, the idea of saying their vows at the place they re-met one year ago was very appealing. Race Director, Mark Wilson, became an ordained minister so that he could be the one to officiate the ceremony. With their combined 6 children and family and friends lined up along the finish chute to witness the ceremony, the couple, as newly announced “Husband and Wife” ran down the aisle to begin their new life together as “Sole Mates” and running partners for life. The day was made complete with the wedding, the perfect weather, the party, the food and friendships made. Local artisans were present with vendor booths creating and selling wooden products,

Glass

Cont. From Cover homage to the lake that gifts her with the materials for her self-taught art. Collecting art beach glass is always an adventure but at this point, Brandi reports no sightings of Bessie, Lake Erie’s gray, 30-40 foot long snake-like monster which has been sighted more in the last three decades than back when Bessie was first spotted in 1793. But she has found top quality glass pieces likely due to the pH of the water and the rapid wave action on the rocky shores of Lake Erie. Beach glass is shards of ordinary glass that have been beat around in the lake for ten years or more, perhaps even centuries. Should you go off on your own beach-glass adventure remember that a prime piece is totally frosted and very smooth with no rough edges. Alas, with the modern use of plastics, these treasures from mostly old bottles and jars will eventually vanish. Red, turquoise, yellow and orange are some of the rarest beach glass colors because bottles and jars were not often made in those colors. Cherish them if you find them. Better still, contact Brandi and ask her to turn it into a treasured piece of jewelry or wall art for you to enjoy forever. The fun of creating with

this medium is that Brandi can craft personalized and intimate gifts either in jewelry form or in her framed pieces. Not one to start small, she made an elephant as her first framed work, followed by seahorses, dolphins, turtles, cats, dragonflies, birds, fish and even clotheslines and wee pebble families. She has helped celebrate events such as weddings and anniversaries, retirements, pet adoptions and seasonal nature. A browse through her Facebook (Essence of Erie) and Instagram (#essenceoferie) pages reveals the whimsy of her pieces. If you find you can’t possibly live another day without owning or gifting one of Brandi’s irresistible creations, or want her to make one to your specifications, you can also reach her through her Etsy store at theEssenceofErie. Brandi has sent her oneof-a-kind pieces as far away as South Africa and the west coast of the United States. One of her green pieces of found Lake Erie glass was featured in the July/ August edition of Beach Combing Magazine, but her favorite is a beautiful, gray, one-inch-tall water droplet shaped piece that certainly fits another name used for beach glass – mermaid’s tears. Her excitement and passion for her art and Lake Erie spills out in her ardent conversation about how she collects, studies, and finds the best use for her precious

Peek at the Peak Fall Colors of the Southern Tier

In spite of all of the modern system against invaders and is foods, the arteries become red Chair lift rides to the top of Holiday Valley during Ellicottville’s Fall Festival last weekresearch into the causes very beneficial for this but if and irritated causing the body end caught the vibrancy of the season. Photo/John Thomas By Carol Fisher Drive along any roads in the county we are treated with the annual spectacle of our luscious fall colors. The chlorophyll absorbs energy from the sunlight and uses that energy to transform carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates like sugar and starch to store in order to feed the tree the following year. Simultaneously, trees are also manufacturing something called carotenoid, which is an orange to yellow pigment that is also masked by the green chlorophyll during summer.

But, then comes fall when the production of chlorophyll abates and, like magic, the bright colors start to materialize. The more exposed to sunlight, the brighter the orange and reds will appear, while those shaded will likely show more yellow. You may wonder why some years are great for dizzying colors, while other are simply so-so. Weather factors like temperature, soil moisture and amounts of sunlight all determine the condition of the fall leaves. Yes, we’ve had one frost but it wasn’t a hard one. Hopefully, it wasn’t strong enough to weaken the dazzling reds that fill our hills with grandeur. According to an article on Accuweather.com, rainy and overcast days tend to increase the intensity of fall colors. Further, cool night air with a lot of daytime sunshine reveals and creates more red and purple pigments which can be killed off by an early hard frost. We’ve not had a drought or too many heavy winds, so the leaves have held fast rather than dropping before they change.

Finally, we are told that “the best weather for brilliant fall foliage is a growing season with ample moisture followed by a dry, cool and sunny autumn with warm days and frostless nights.” Here’s an interesting fact. Have you ever noticed how the dead brown leaves of the oaks seem to cling to the trees rather than falling off like the maple leaves? It turns out oaks and several other tree species hang on to their dead leaves throughout winter until new growth begins in the spring. Of course, then there are the pines, firs and other evergreens whose needle-like leaves remain green throughout the year, except for the larch, which is actually deciduous. The US Forest Service informs us that the needles of the larches turn golden (and gorgeous!) then usually drop off the branches to save nutrients and store them in other parts of the tree for later use. This process lasts several weeks throughout the month of October. Although See “FALL” Right

of heart disease, western medicine still insists that heart disease is caused by elevated cholesterol. The main treatment for heart disease is medications that lower cholesterol and a diet low in fat. Despite the fact that over 25% of the population takes statin medications and have reduced the fat intake in their diet, more Americans are dying from heart disease than ever before. Dr. Dwight Lundell is a world renowned heart surgeon who speaks out about the real cause of heart disease. He states that the cause is inflammation in the artery walls. Inflammation is the body’s natural defense

the inflammation is long-term then it can cause the blood vessels to be chronically inflamed. When the blood vessels are in this irritated state, cholesterol becomes trapped within them and may lead to heart attack and stroke. The main causes of inflammation within the body are a diet full of carbohydrates which includes sugars and grains and a diet filled with high omega 6 oils such as sunflower, corn, soybean, canola and safflower oil. Mainstream medicine actually told us to replace animal fats with vegetable oils and this is a huge mistake. When we constantly eat these

to respond with inflammation. The way to decrease this inflammatory process is to work on what you are eating. Choose foods that are as unprocessed as possible. Eat grass-fed butter, tallow, lard and olive oil which have a much lower omega 6 profile. Choose colorful fruits and vegetables and grass-fed meats. The main solution is to keep it simple. foliage predicted a 60 percent color change in the 65,000acre state park, with near peak colors surrounding the area. While you travel the colorful roads of our beautiful county, give some thought to the hidden life of trees. An interesting book by that name, written by forester, Peter Wohllben explains what they feel and how they communicate and work together in times of stress. Fall, according to

Wohllben, is a time for the trees to finish their hard work, shed their leaves and close up shop for the long winter months. He claims that they feel just as we do after a busy day at work – ready for a wellearned rest. Whether you can buy his theory or not, please enjoy the colorful display that Mother Nature has provided for your pleasure. Take lots of photos. Not every fall season is this spectacular.
