210M People/Year Receive Recall Letters

The 16th annual Holiday Valley Beer and Wine Festival is Ellicottville’s next big event on November 8th and 9th from 3:30-7:30pm. The weekend features the crazy fun Trucks ‘n Brews on Friday, the Beer and Wine Festival on Saturday and the Kegs ‘n Eggs breakfast on Sunday. Friday night’s Trucks ‘n Brews is an outdoor beer tasting event with several options from Southern Tier, Ellicottville Brewing and Thin Man Brewery. But that’s not all! Nine of Western New York’s favorite food trucks will be on hand, plus live music with the Stick Tights band and a GIANT bonfire. Last year’s inaugural event was a big success and this year promises to be bigger and better! The event takes place outside of the Tannenbaum Lodge at Holiday Valley from 7-10pm. Admission and beer tasting is $25, available online at holidayvalley.com, and food trucks are pay as you go. All attendees must be 21 or over.

Did you know…? Have you recently bought a new or used vehicle? Hoping that you made the right decision and it is a safe and reliable vehicle. I am sure it is as far as the dealers and sales people know. However do not be surprised if you get a recall notice in the mail from the manufacturer stating that they have discovered something wrong with the vehicle. It could be something minor or it could be dangerous and cause an accident or even death if not repaired or replaced properly. Cars are incredible pieces of machinery and are one of the most valued and most revolutionary inventions of the past two centuries.

Staff and students from GALC pose with their window display outside Crown Street Roasting Co. located at 16 W. Third Street in downtown Jamestown.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To recognize this, teachers and students at the G.A. Learning Center (GALC) recently partnered with Crown Street Roasting Co. and the county Department of Mental Hygiene’s Suicide Prevention Program to raise awareness of the serious effects of bullying. Every day thousands of young people experience bullying from their peers while at school, after school in their neighborhoods, and through social media and texts. As a way to support bullying prevention and heighten its awareness, students from GALC, staff from Family Services of the Chautauqua Region (FSCR), and the owners of Crown Street Roasting Co. have installed a window display to teach

customers and pedestrians the value of kindness. “It’s our duty as teachers to promote kindness, giving, and teamwork as much as we possibly can,” said Lucia Guarnieri, reading specialist at GALC. The theme of the display, borrowed from the popular Pixar/Walt Disney film UP, is ‘Lift Each Other Up.” The students who participated in the event collaborated with others to design and install the window display. To reward each of their efforts, the students were treated to hot chocolate and a pizza party. They received a certificate for being “Bullying Prevention Specialists” as well. “As adults, we often do not provide students the opportunity to have a

voice; to make an impact,” said Dr. Kristin GaraasJohnson, GALC Director of Education. “We’d like to give a special thanks to our community partners at FSCR who spearheaded this outreach opportunity for us at GALC as well as Mike and Sarah Bigney, owners of Crown Street Roasting Co., for this opportunity,” said Garaas-Johnson. Sailing Team Qualifies

Southwestern High Sailing Team Headed For Mid-Atlantic Championship

Madi Overbeck, Will Turner, Luke Tota, Brooks Turcotte, Sage Bertges The Southwestern High School Sailing Team traveled to Rochester on Sunday, October 6th, to participate in the Mid-Atlantic Sailing Championship Qualifier. 15 teams competed in the C420 fleet for the top 2 qualifying spots to continue on to the Mid-Atlantic Championships held later in the month. Southwestern Sailing Team was comprised of Will Turner and Luke Tota in A Division and

Brooks Turcotte with Madi Overbeck sailing B Division, with Sage Bertges crewing for both divisions throughout the regatta. Conditions were challenging on the water as the day began. The day was overcast with cooler temperatures and inconsistently shifty winds. Many teams flipped over during the course of the event as cannonball puffs slammed into their sails.

Boats quickly righted themselves in the following lull only to be knocked again by a full-forced gust, making it difficult to stay upright. Southwestern Sailing Team won 1st place overall with 35 points, 6 points ahead of the 2nd place winners, Nichols. Brooks Turcotte, sailing with Madi Overbeck and Sage Bertges alternating as crew, earned lowest score during the event, with 13 points total. Together, both divisions secured six 1st place finishes throughout the regatta. Southwestern qualified to continue on to St. Mary’s College, Maryland to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Championships in 2 weeks, which will take place on the 19th and 20th of October. Southwestern placed 1st overall, Nichols School placed 2nd, and McQuaid placed 3rd overall for the event.

With Stephen Colbert”, “Star Talk with Neil DeGrasses Tyson”, “Late Night With Carson Daly” and “Nerdist With Chris Hardwick”. She is a woman of many talents. She is an official Advisory Board Member for Jamestown’s National Comedy Center. She has her own weekly podcast for Maximum Fun called “Nobody Listens To Paula Poundstone”, which is a comedic take on a field guide to life. Each week Paula and her co-host, Adam Felber, a friend and fellow panelist on “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” (NPR’s #! Weekly comedy news quiz) bring on leading expert guests and use their unique comedic sensibility to help us navigate life in the 21st century. Along the way, Paula attempts to explain existence through her kaleidoscopic perspective, and Adam tries to interject

some rationality. Poundstone will be appearing on this weekend’s episode of “Wait Wait..” on WBFO – October 12th at 11am and October 13th at 10am. Paula is also a host, actress, lecturer and author. She has published two books; her second entitled “The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness (published by Algonquin Books) asks, “Is there a secret to human happiness?” She offers herself up as a guinea pig in a series of “totally scientific” experiments, recording her data for all mankind. She has been a part of numerous HBO specials and actually starred in her own series that was both on HBO and ABC television networks. Her second special for HBO, “Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard” marked the first time the elite university allowed its name to be used in the title of a television show. Paula is a legend, a ground-breaking artist in her profession. She was the first woman, in its then 73rd year, to perform standup

comedy at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. She won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic and is recognized in innumerable lists, documentaries, and literary compendiums noting influential standup comedians of our time. Len Barry of the Reg Lenna stated, “We think Paula is a really great opener for the start of the season. She isn’t overtly political and has really great, clean comedy that the audience can relate too.” “We have people coming from Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Ohio.” Len went on. “We hope to see many local faces as well. We have always enjoyed bringing entertainment to the area and are happy to serve up fun events and performances to our community.” Do not miss this opportunity to see a legend perform live. Cont. From Cover since the members of what is now the Emmanuel Baptist Church (EBC) in Jamestown began gathering for praise and worship in community homes. After growing in numbers, they were invited to use the basement of a local church. They grew even more and finally a chance came to have their own church. Being choir director at his church, he noticed some of his choir kids in the class. One thing led to another and his class became the place to audition for the gospel choir. As these things sometime happen, the choir became known in Buffalo and they found themselves performing at a local Catholic Church. Word spread and they became everyone’s sweethearts. My quest for a better understanding of Gospel music eventually brought me to a video of Michelle Williams, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland knocking my socks off with their spirited rendition of “Say Yes.” I certainly was convinced when they said, “When Jesus says yes, nobody can say no.” I then found Kirk Franklin, a 13-Grammy winning, singer, songwriter, author who heard and then signed on for RCA’s Fo Yo Soul recordings a contemporary gospel family group, The Walls, who are performing at the Anniversary Explosion Gospel Concert. Running for a Cure 266 Miles for Cystic Fibrosis

Poole pictured in a race last weekend.

By Bradley Poole Health & Fitness Have you ever thought to yourself, I think I’d like to run 266 miles? Or is it just me and all those other crazy ultrarunners out there? You see, I live life for the challenge. I love to see just how far I can push my body and mind. Every day for me is a battle and pushing myself daily is a must. If you don’t know me, I live with a terminal illness called, Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a rare genetic disease that produces thick, sticky mucus within the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body. Overtime, the mucus destroys the organs and causes organ failure. Most people with CF don’t live past 40 years of age. In fact, only 5% of the CF population today is 40 years or older. In order to have a chance at surviving past the life expectancy, I’m required to do two hours of breathing treatments a day, take 50-plus pills daily and exercise religiously. Even doing those things won’t guarantee me a free ticket to 40. Today, I am 32 years young. I

got to this point because of my fight and will to live. Instead of feeling sad, depressed and angry about having CF, I’ve learned to turn those emotions into a warrior-like mentality. I’m in a constant battle with this demon inside me and I refuse to let it win. It has sparked a fire inside me to live as long as possible and inspire others to never give up in times of adversity. CF has also helped me value and appreciate life and all it has to offer. Life is short and I’ve learned to never take a single day for granted. You never know when it could be your last day. This brings me to the challenge. Like I mentioned, I live life for the challenge. One thing that really challenges me physically and mentally is running. I’ve been running for three years now, competing in: 5K’s, 10K’s, trail races, obstacle course races and half marathons. Running has helped me stay healthy, eased my anxiety and pushes me to be my best. In all honesty, it has been my lifesaver. One day I had this crazy thought. What if I ran through every town in Cattaraugus County in seven days to raise money and awareness for CF? I sat on the thought for a while and decided to make it a reality. You see, CF receives no government funding. The only way for us to receive life-saving medications and eventually a cure is through fundraising. I’ve organized many charity events, but nothing compares to the scale of this one. You can say it’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever put myself up to. On, July 5th – 11th of 2020, I will be running 266 miles in seven days in hopes to raise $100,000 for the Cystic

Fibrosis Foundation. Two hundred sixty-six miles may sound crazy, but I would do anything to help find a cure for this disease. I have many friends who have lost their battle at a young age. Also, many others who never leave the hospital bed, or who have feeding tubes, or who are strapped to their oxygen tanks 24/7. The number of people on the transplant list is gut wrenching. When CF is eventually cured, I want to be the person who helped be part of that. I would do anything for my fellow fighters. This run may be a tough challenge, but I know it’s one I will most definitely conquer. I want to show people what’s possible if you put your mind to it. Having a positive mindset and will to fight can get you a long way. With all this being said, I will be looking for sponsors for this event. The funds collected will go towards all necessities required to get this event off the ground and running. Any remaining funds will be donated to the CF Foundation. All sponsors will have their business name included in all advertising and marketing campaigns, as well as, printed logos on t-shirts, posters, flyers and the finish line banner. You will also receive a free ticket to the celebration party on July 11th at the Ellicottville Distillery. If your business would love to be a sponsor please contact me via phone (716-378-6604), email (pooleb1987@gmail. com), or Facebook (Bradley Poole Health & Fitness). I would greatly appreciate your help and would love for you to be a part of, 266 Miles for Cystic Fibrosis: Running for a Cure. Thank you!
