Everything is spiced this time of year from your latte to your pies. The leaves are turning the color of spice, what better way to experience them than a chairlift ride or Segway ride at Peek n’ Peak. There is a full list of fall activities to do there at pknpk.com. Last weekend Jamestown’s inaugural 3rd Street Beer and Wine Festival had a great turn out; check out all the photos on the back cover of this week’s paper. Enchanted Forest Arriving Soon Reserve Your Spot At The Audubon Now For October 3rd & 4th Event

This human-sized Spring Peeper will be one of several creatures that greet visitors and share stories along the trails at Audubon Community Nature Center’s Enchanted Forest. Spots fill up quickly, so make your reservations now for this delightful event on Friday and Saturday evenings, October 4 and 5.

Jamestown, N.Y. – Don’t wait to make your reservations for Enchanted Forest, Audubon Community Nature Center’s captivating and enlightening non-scary Halloween event. Even with spaces for more than 500 children and their adults, it can be expected to sell out. This magical experience on Friday and Saturday evenings, October 4th and 5th, begins with stories and songs at a backyard campfire. Then volunteer “fireflies” light your way with lanterns along a luminary-lit trail where you will meet talking animals. Human-sized animals engage your imagination, maybe make you laugh, and teach you something about wildlife in the region. You will hear stories from a Red Fox, Praying Mantis, Bat, Pileated Woodpecker, Spring Peeper, and Garter

Snake. After about a 45-minute walk, you can explore the Nature Center, do crafts provided by Michaels, and enjoy snacks inside. Participants are reminded to dress for the weather. Long pants, long sleeve shirts, close-toed shoes and insect repellent are recommended. Walks start at 6 pm and go out every 10 minutes. The last walk starts at 8 pm. (Sunset is approximately 6:45 pm.) Prepayment is required and reserves a specific time. Enrollment is limited, and the program takes place rain or shine. There are no ticket sales at the door and no refunds. The fee is $12, $9 for Nature Center members, $6 for children ages 3-15, and free for children two and under. To reserve your spot, call (716) 569-2345

during business hours or visit AudubonCNC.org/ EnchantedForest. Scouts and others can earn a fun patch by visiting the Courtesy Desk for a list of requirements. After completing at least four of the activities, the fun patch can be purchased on a firstcome first-served basis for $3. Enchanted Forest is presented through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers, some of whom are registered with RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. To learn how you can volunteer, visit AudubonCNC.org/ Volunteer. Audubon is grateful to all the local business sponsors who help make this event possible For more information about Enchanted Forest, visit AudubonCNC.org/ EnchantedForest. Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, onequarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. To learn more, call (716) 5692345 or visit the Programs page at AudubonCNC.org. In November of 1938, representatives of 21 cities met in Olean, NY to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new professional baseball league. Jamestown, Olean and Niagara Falls made commitments if the new circuit was formed. In March of 1939, the Pennsylvania-OntarioNew York (PONY) League became official when Batavia, Bradford and Hamilton agreed to join. Stuart C. Maguire, sports

editor of the Jamestown Evening Journal, headed the Independent Jamestown Baseball and Exhibition Co., Inc. Talent was sought with three local boys making the team – George Goodell, Merlin Peterson and Les James. Nine days before the season opened, Maguire, who was overwhelmed with the financial and time pressure of running the team, transferred control to William F. Broadhead. The team, known as the Jockeys, would play their home games at Celoron Park. One week into the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates made a successful offer to purchase the team from the local investors

and renamed the team as Pirates. It was hoped that the parent club would restock the team with better players from their farm system. That did not happen. The Baby Bucs featured several .300+ hitters, but their pitching staff was lacking. The Jamestown Pirates ended the season in the cellar of the PONY League and more trouble was on the horizon. Business manager Jim Mathews informed Jamestown City Council that the ball field at Celoron Park was no longer acceptable for professional baseball and that the Pittsburgh Pirates would leave if a new stadium was not constructed within the City of Jamestown.

The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce has moved its Jamestown office to 300 North Main Street and will be moving to a downtown Dunkirk location the first of next year. Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer Todd Tranum said, “These moves are part of our strategic plan. We have had a goal of being centrally located in the two population centers of the County to better serve our membership. Certainly this an exciting time in our County as we watch the National

the source by limiting your exposure and using natural herbs and supplements to remove any buildup that has already occurred. This is the most important phase because if you do not take care of the root cause of the problem, it will be much harder to regain your health. Phase 2: Replace Once you have begun working on the removal process in phase one, it is time to look at what vitamins and minerals your body is deficient in and restore your levels to the optimal amount. When your body does not receive the proper nutrients it needs over time, your organs begin functioning at a suboptimal level. As this process continues, it can lead to an even greater decline in your overall health. If your health is not currently optimal, there is a very good chance that you have

nutritional deficiencies that need to be replaced. You can do this by making healthy dietary changes such as including more organic fruits and vegetables in your diet and adding supplements to replenish the vitamins and minerals your body is lacking. Phase 3: Rejuvenation Phase 3 of the healing process is allowing your body to rejuvenate over time. Every day, the cells in your body are dying and new ones are continually being produced. When you have removed the root cause of your health problems and replaced your nutritional deficiencies, the new cells your body creates will be even healthier and you will continue to achieve improvements in your health as time goes on, rather than watching your health decline over the aging process. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the 3 phases of healing, you can call Jennifer at 716665-5015 or attend her free workshop which will be held at Barkstrom Natural Health on October 17th at 7pm. Jennifer Merchant is a Holistic Health Practitioner and Clinical Nutritionist at Barkstrom Natural Health. Jennifer is trained in Functional Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, and Nutrition Response Testing. She recently moved back to her hometown in Chautauqua County and is excited to help you and your family regain your health.

produced and co-written by Mel Brooks. In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called “Perri-Air.” In desperation, Spaceball’s leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy). In October, the National Comedy Center will present “Ghostbusters” (Friday, October 11 @ 7:30 pm), one of the biggest blockbuster comedy films of all time -directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. After the members of a team

of scientists (Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray) lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to become “ghostbusters” to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction. Harold Ramis’ Dr. Egon Spengler Ghostbusters suit is proudly on display at the National Comedy Center. Both Spaceballs and Ghostbusters are rated PG. There will be limited seating available, so the community is encouraged to bring their own blankets/lawn chairs. The National Comedy Center is open 7 days a week in Jamestown, NY. This does not include Holiday cards. Experts believe the rise of the internet is to blame.

Historians are concerned future generations will not be able to learn as much about their past with the decline of handwritten documents. Although love letters do tend to be handwritten and hand delivered. People enjoy receiving and reading handwritten cards and letters. Also saving cards and letters are a thing of the past since they are in an email or text that is easily and often delegated and/ or deleted. Limited passes that don’t include access to the headliners will still be available after all the full Festival passes are sold out. Limited passes will still grant access to all 4-performance stages throughout the rest of the festival. There are only 100 $30 full festival passes including both headliners, only 300 $20 dollar passes for Friday’s headliner “Driftwood” and only 300 $20 passes for Saturday’s headliner “Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad”. Tickets are on sale now. Festival runner Angelo Giuffre and I took some time to discuss the festival and its many aspects. One of the main things he is excited about is the eclectic talent they have lined up for this year, from reggae and jazz to rock n’ roll. It’s an event that brings out a good number of people looking to be inspired by the entertainment. “Last year we had about 200 people. With our huge headliners this year, we are hoping to have double that number attend.” Headliner for Friday, September 27th at 8pm is “Driftwood”, appearing on the Main Stage. They are a popular national touring Americana band with a solid underground fan base specializing in dynamic live shows and a strong presence on the national touring music scene. They also have a devout following, and a sizeable discography.

Headlining Saturday, September 28th at 8pm on the Main Stage is “Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad”, who first received praise for their live show, which combined world beats and reggae rhythms within jam band aesthetics. In recent years the band’s studio recordings, which showcase their songwriting and musicianship across all genres of roots music, have further cemented their legend as master innovators and artists. They have a large and dedicated fan base, including many in our targeted regional demographic, 75,000 monthly listeners on Spotify with almost 2 million plays of their top song. Both of these acts are known for drawing audiences reaching a several hour radius. It is anticipated that each of these bands will attract 200-400 additional patrons, with a high chance of fans coming all the way from Rochester, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Ohio. But it’s not just the headliners that make this show what it is. There will be over 45 bands, artists, comedians and slam poets participating in the event. There are four different stages (Main Stage, Odyssey Stage, Studio Metro and the Courtyard), each hosted by one of Jamestown’s own talented set of artists. Artists that will be showcased include Bill Ward, Ken Hardly, Dave McDonald, Pulse Poetry and comedian team Karate Sleepover. Some of the artists you could have the pleasure of seeing are Slow Motion Breakdown, Deep Fried & Dipped in Honey, Cold Lazarus, Shamus O’Donnel and so many more… The

full schedule is available at inspirejamestown.com. “It’s a unique festival.” Says Angelo “Music, live art, comedy, poetry, all together in one place, at the same time. It’s also an open house format. So, you can come and check out what you are interested in, visit a local restaurant or shop then come back and watch whatever part of the shows you like best” Start time for the Festival is actually 4pm on Friday and the fun just keeps going from there. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see so many local artists in their element and let them bring you some inspiration in the form of fantastic entertainment. This festival is made possible with grant funding provided through Jamestown’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative award provided by Governor Cuomo and New York State through Homes and Community Renewal and the Fund for Downtown Programming administrated by the Jamestown Local Development Corporation. This year they are also partnering with the Double Tree by Hilton to provide special rates for ticket holders. “This event is great for our entire community. As it appeals to not just our local residents but has the added benefit of bringing in a lot of out-of-town visitors who will come for the weekend and patronize our downtown attractions, hotels and businesses.” Angelo closed with. “This could create an impact for our entire region. And we hope it inspires an interest in the artists and their work that will stick with them long after they leave.”

Cont. From Cover roots.” His family’s history in the Chautauqua County area extends to the Civil War and the 112th Infantry in which 3 out of 4 of his great-grandfathers served. Jamestown is the only “big school” in the county and with a lifetime of experience serving in big schools, the position at Jamestown seemed, to Apthorpe, a perfect fit. The biggest surprise that Apthorpe had after taking the superintendent’s seat was the amount of local job availability. “I thought there were no jobs (in Jamestown),” he explained. That perception changed after encounters with representatives from Cummins, Blackstone, and UPMC. There are many job opportunities in the areasome of the jobs pay $30$40 thousand dollars a year plus benefits. The problem is more about the pool of applicants: local industries need more explicitly trained young people. Project Based Learning, a method promoted at Indiana State, is an option that is being explored that will help Jamestown Public Schools dove-tail with local businesses to identify holes in the labor pool so that the educational programming produces graduates that are immediately employable in local manufacturing and tech businesses. Project based learning or PBL is “an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge,” as explained on an IU website. PBL focuses on real world content and emphasizes collaboration, communication, and critical

thinking. With the lack of jobs myth busted, Apthorpe faced a statistical reality. Many students in the district live in poverty. Their chances for success in school, despite any curriculum changes, are greatly impacted by their family and living situations. Chronic tardiness, lack of motivation, and inappropriate behavior need to be curtailed in this student population. The educational reality for this group of students becomes less about the traditional 3 Rs and more about resources, resiliency, and relevancy. Author Eric Jensen, who wrote Teaching with Poverty in Mind, informs “poverty calls for key information and smarter strategies.” A tenant of the book is that insufficient resources to maintain an average standard of living affect the mind, body, and soul. Apthorpe describes the problem in terms of biology and brain processingstudents who have adverse experiences must process those experiences as a matter of biology. Sitting in a class about fractions will not help with that processing. Students in these situations need help. The children who enter the doors of the JPS Success Academy, which opened this school year, will have available the resources necessary to address their socio-emotional needs so that they can move forward in completing their education. Mental health professionals, counselors, and social workers will all be under one roof. There is no additional cost to the district as the service providers are not charged for the space that they are provided at the Academy and there is no charge for the clinical services to JPS.
